Thank you for this video. I was really struggling with using punctuations a few weeks ago and i began to read my high school English books and it really helped me improve my use of punctuations. This video is also helpful and very informative. Right now, I'm working on improving my use of semicolons and colons along with the other punctuations like em and en dashes. There's one thing that you haven't really covered with the use of commas but similar to addressing someone. It's calling out with their name. Example would be: John, where are you?..A few weeks ago I was also struggling to place certain punctuations on sentences. One example is: Hey, thanks for the donuts, pal. I didn't know at first that there should be a comma before the word pal but then I realized that I need to. Thanks again for your videos. I'll be watching your other videos as well.
As a teacher of children and adults, I found this very easy. However, I’d have loved my students to watch this whole series as it’s often a better understanding. I can use and explain punctuation, but we weren’t taught why or when we needed punctuation as a child. I’d get my students to read another person’s paragraph out loud. They’d realise when a pause was required to make it easier for another person to analyse. In Tasmania, Australia, our spelling is different , based on English grammar and spelling. That spelling can certainly make a difference ie ‘favourite’,rather than ‘favorite’ would jump out to me as wrong! At times we focus on the spelling more than the punctuation. Good lessons thank you, great examples as well! I wish I’d seen these videos 60 years ago! 🙏

Thank you very much for this helpful tutorial. I have a question about the coordinating conjunctions. When should I begin a sentence with them? Because I'm having some difficulties and I'm getting confused every time I want to put a comma or a period before them. (For transcription purposes.)
Thank you so much for clarifying the eight comma rules. I’ve always been unsure at times in regards to this particular punctuation. I wrote down the comma rules so I’ll never forget.
Great content! Clear, concise and, most importantly, simple looking visuals. As for improvements, it would be good to have the practice examples include some of the mentioned exceptions to the rule.
My fingers are on fire.😄 I have been taking notes of all the lessons in this video. Great job Jennifer. I will be sharing these videos with my niece that is currently in high school. I am sure that they will be of great help to her.
Thank you so much. I learned a lot 💜 But I just want to ask a question right now. Is it right to put a period after a quotation mark? Like for example: I said "I want to go home," then she replied, "I don't care!". She's so rude. So that's the sentence. Is it alright to put a period after the quotation mark or it isn't needed to be there? And one last thing, it is ok to not capitalize the first letter of the quoted text? Like for example "don't cry." or it must be "Don't cry." Please help me for this. I'm a bit confused.
Hello. My take on your first question: 1. I said, "I want to go home." She replied, "I don't care!" She's so rude. or 2. I said, "I want to go home." Then she replied, "I don't care!" She's so rude. For your second question, it says we need to capitalise the first word in a sentence that is a direct quote. When quoting, the first word of a complete sentence should be capitalized, regardless of its placement within the main sentence. Example: Matthew said, “In that case, I'm going out for a walk!” Ref. www.grammarly.com/blog/capitalization-in-quotes/

As a Dane who loves learning more languages and is basically fluent in English ... I've always had a tough time switching from Danish comma rules to English ones. Thank you for this!
To be honest, I like languages that are phonetically consistent. Also, these videos help me a lot with my English. Very quickly though, what is the difference between a comma and a semi-colon?
Very good video, I will use it in my classroom. I teach oral English in China and I've noticed that most students, although they have learned English and more specifically English grammar, they don't know how to use commas and punctuation marks in general. I also would like to ask you to explain in your future videos, if possible, that we need to add one space after using any punctuation marks. Most Chinese students don't do it when they write in English.
Your voice is really beautiful, your lesson is well-organized,I will practice Your lesson a few times until I gain confidence in how to use commas properly.your pronounceation can also be my target to imitate, I found a good teacher on youtube,UA-cam is the greatest source for lots of info people need.
Tech is a gift for today's learners. Just imagine about students who have completed their education in their local languages and stepped into corporate ladder to make a career and found difficult to have effective communication skills while dealing with clients, peers, and others on real time😢. I feel motivated after watching this video and all your comments helping each other to learn together.. Keep going consistently for better results one day.. Happy Learning..Puru from world...😊

Hi Jennifer :) I just wanted to say thank you for these videos! They have been the most helpful for me over any other ones I have watched. I am currently brushing up on my grammar skills while learning to transcribe, and these are so helpful to me. Thank you again!
So, in regards to the 8th rule, you used my mothers birthday, which is March 12th, and the next example that you used was my most consequential girlfriends birthday, which is December 7th. I find that most peculiar, so I took a screen shot of the window to share with my numerologist friends. March 12th in Chaldean Numerology is considered 6, and December 7th, is considered 1, and with the years included the totals are the exact opposite: March 12th, 2020=1, December 7th, 2021=6. So, apart from all of that, I have been self-conscious to the point of not writing people, because I never quite grasped grammar because I had other things on my mind while in school. There is a retired English teacher that lives nearby, and today I thought to ask her what is the word "and" in grammar? That's when she exclaimed "and, but, and although are the main conjunctions!", I think she got a kick out of me asking, I'm determined to learn in spite of my age. It's never too late, am I right? I'm getting ready to hit the subscribe button.🧐🙂
1. Use when separating series of 3 or more items (noun, verb, or adjectives) 1.1 Comma of 2nd to the last item is called (oxford comma) 1.2 oxford comma is optional 2. Use comma to separate independent clauses when they're joined by following conjuctions. FOR, AND, NOR, BUT, OR, YET, & SO Independent clause - contains of subject and predicate that makes sense by itself. Conjuction - word that connects clauses
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have started to write short stories, purely for pleasure, after a long absence from writing anything. I was really surprised at how much I had forgotten about basic grammar. When and where to use commas correctly has proven to be the most difficult, so your last tutorial was really helpful. I’m not sure whether the last sentence is grammatically correct. Please advise?
I loved it. I'm a writer. I hope to have less editing problems. When I was young, I just didn't get it. Your video really helped. Thank you. I will watch again.
Thank you very much! Great explanation on comma usage. Could you also give me tips on how I can correctly use commas when writing an essay? For some reason when I write long essays I misuse commas even though I theoretically know where to use them.

The class was easy to understand. thank you!
Thank you Sparkle for your concise, logical, and methodical explanations of how to use commas in a sentence, it is very insightful.
Great video that explains each and every details in,a simple and easy manner.
Thank you for this tutorial. It was quite easy and your method of teaching makes it easy for one to understand.
Thank you so much. I learned a lot 💜
But I just want to ask a question right now.
Like for example "don't cry." or it must be "Don't cry."
Please help me for this. I'm a bit confused.
Hello.
My take on your first question:
1. I said, "I want to go home." She replied, "I don't care!" She's so rude.
or
2. I said, "I want to go home." Then she replied, "I don't care!" She's so rude.
For your second question, it says we need to capitalise the first word in a sentence that is a direct quote.
When quoting, the first word of a complete sentence should be capitalized, regardless of its placement within the main sentence.
Example: Matthew said, “In that case, I'm going out for a walk!”

Thank you for this :)
From grade school to university, the English language is part of our major subjects, but until now I still get confused with the use of comma, colon and semicolon and also subject-verb agreement 😅
Thank you so much.
Thank you SO much for your generosity, Raquel! I just noticed this now!
Thank uuuuuu, I wish I could hit the like button 100 times for this awesome video.
This is extremely helpful! I have a comma rules quiz on Monday.
Best of luck!
I really enjoyed this lesson. So nicely explained that we can remember well. Keep up the good work!
I'm new to your channel as you can tell. I absolutely love it. I just know, as a man of 73, I'm going to learn a lot from it.
Thank you!
Welcome to the channel! We are so happy to have you! ❤️
Can you cover colon and semi-colon? When to properly use them.
I love all your videos, I never pass them up.
Good idea!
I've been wanting to write a book for a long time, but I was scared to write anything. I didn't know where to put my commas, and I sometimes forget to write some words down, but this video really helped me at lot, thank you.
( if I still used the commas wrong, I'm sorry, it's 4:26, and I have not slept.)
Thank you for this video this is very informative, by the way, I’m having difficulty putting quotation marks for direct and indirect quotations..can you pls make a separate video for quotation marks (when the speaker is being interviewed or when having a speech)..thanks in advance for all your help☺️
Thank you for your kind words. I will put that one on my to-do list! It might take me some time, but stay tuned in the near future :)
As a Dane who loves learning more languages and is basically fluent in English ... I've always had a tough time switching from Danish comma rules to English ones. Thank you for this!
You are very welcome!!
Thank you 😊
To be honest, I like languages that are phonetically consistent. Also, these videos help me a lot with my English. Very quickly though, what is the difference between a comma and a semi-colon?
Yes, there is. A semicolon is used to join 2 sentences that are related. Something like that.
Wow! This is a very nice lesson. I’ll come back to this, whenever I seem to forget comma rules. I learned a lot. Thanks for the video! 💗
Your voice is really beautiful, your lesson is well-organized,I will practice
Your lesson a few times until I gain confidence in how to use commas properly.your pronounceation can also be my target to imitate, I found a
good teacher on youtube,UA-cam is the greatest source for lots of info
people need.
I can't thank you enough.
Tech is a gift for today's learners. Just imagine about students who have completed their education in their local languages and stepped into corporate ladder to make a career and found difficult to have effective communication skills while dealing with clients, peers, and others on real time😢. I was also one among them few years ago, but I'm here to tell them all nothing is impossible if you have growth mindset, accept how u are, and keep learning without worrying about what others think of me..I have just today found this channel when scrolling down on UA-cam for English learning. I feel motivated after watching this video and all your comments helping each other to learn together.. Keep going consistently for better results one day.. Happy Learning..Puru from world...😊
Please make more such videos. They are really helpful to understand grammar. Also, congratulations! You earned a subscriber. You're doing a great job helping us with short Grammar lessons ☺️
Hi Jennifer :) I just wanted to say thank you for these videos! They have been the most helpful for me over any other ones I have watched. I am currently brushing up on my grammar skills while learning to transcribe, and these are so helpful to me. Thank you again!
This video literally shows how stupid i am.
No because same
Don’t feel stupid you’re not alone I feel the same way.
😂😂😂
😂
Me too
Excellent way of teaching.
I have been stuck with these rules before this lecture,in which I got to know many things.Thank you
I wish I found this video a while ago.
My name is, Abu bakarr Kamara. I'm new to this channel, thanks for the teaching.
Thanks!
Thank you so much, Judith! This really helps support my channel. Much love to you!
Thank you for this. Your explanations were very concise and easy to follow.
1. Use when separating series of 3 or more items (noun, verb, or adjectives)
1.1 Comma of 2nd to the last item is called (oxford comma)
1.2 oxford comma is optional
2. Use comma to separate independent clauses when they're joined by following conjuctions. FOR, AND, NOR, BUT, OR, YET, & SO
Independent clause - contains of subject and predicate that makes sense by itself.
Amazing Description! Thanks for sharing
4 years later and still giving value. Thank you!
