When I was younger I grew up believing that sign language was a universal language. Especially when I saw this movie called (one missed call 3). It had Korean and Japanese actors. For people that don't know what I'm talking about there is a Japanese girl who is a student that goes on as trip to South Korea and she meets up with her pen pal who is Korean and def and when they meet they speak using sign language. So because I didn't know any better I never bothered finding out that sign language was very diverse like every other language. So when I was just looking up languages and I stumbled into a part of a paragraph where it said "sign language is multilingual." When I read that it really blew my mind so I started looking up videos and ended up hear to see how different. I know it was only 3 countries, but wow this has really opened my eyes. Thank you for posting this video. You never stop learning.

Haha, it's funny to see ASL and JSL users communicate with each other, so many similar Signs, but with completely different meanings.
For instance, the "Middle Finger" means brother in JSL...
So I would say that ASL and JSL are very different.
Many in Japan do learn ASL and International Sign.
Definitely, International signs are more used in Europe, than in Asia and fingerspelling is borrowed from ASL.
ASL is popular, similarly like English.
The JSL "friend" sign reminds me of when I was living in the UK where I discovered (rather awkwardly) that the two-fingered "peace" sign ✌ common to the United States is actually _quite_ a rude gesture indeed 😂
Sarah Riedel yes so true. It’s actually maybe related to the Ancient English longbow archers showing their ✌️to the French horsemen on the battlefield. It maybe a gesture to say “we’ll kill you with our arrows!” And then in America it became the middle finger some how.

Many signs in ASL and FinSL are identical or nearly identical, too but obviously with different meanings.
Some differences are silly, like ASL for "name" means "candy/sweets" in FinSL 😄

There would be a terrible loss of culture if every person in the world only spoke one language.

In ASL the french sign for mother means period.
I find it so interesting to see the differences in the signs chosen, and it’s reminding me of my thoughts on BSL (British Sign Language) and how ASL is fairly easily used with one hand instead of both, whereas in BSL even the alphabet requires both hands! I’d definitely love to find out more about JSL and how the signs differ from what I know! And I am by no means an expert on any sign language! I’m just really interested in learning another language!
Interestingly "dumb/stupid" is identical in JSL and FinSL. Although in FinSL it's usually signed around the center of your forehead :)
It is really beautiful to see so many intersections of cultures interacting. As a hearing person whose native language is English, I’m learning spoken Japanese currently. I am interested in ASL and started some basic lessons. The Deaf communities in every country have their own ways of doing things as well, and I’m happy there are interpreters and just multilingual people who create bridges of communication. It would be amazing if I had the opportunity to learn Japanese sign languages or French, etc. so much to to learn!

That's great that you are interested in ASL. Old French Sign Language (150 years ago) has had a big influence on ASL. So it's not so difficult to learn modern French Sign Language. Good luck with your studies and meeting with the Deaf community, in and outside of North America.

i’m 15, sign language looks SO COOL to learn and i would love to learn it, but my school doesn’t teach it and i don’t know anywhere near me that does 😔 maybe i’ll learn it someday but for now i’ll just marvel at how fascinating it is :)
There are ASL creators here on UA-cam that have videos showing everything from the alphabet to grammar rules, because it’s a completely different language than English is! So depending on what sign language you’re interested in, look at the videos and read the comments, it’s always good to see how the creators respond to what the people watching are thinking!

I love sign languages! I worked as an ASL interpreter for many years. I’m retired now. I love seeing the comparisons of the three languages. It’s very interesting to learn sign from different countries. Thank you for sharing with us!

The markedly different versions of "mother" and "father" were especially interesting for some reason - so much variation!

Oh wow this is such a beautiful video. I honestly can't help but cry. I do not know any form of sign language but I became curious because of an anime called Gangsta featured a deaf Japanese character so I immediately looked up the differences between Japanese and American sign language. Language is so beautiful especially when it is a foreign language but sign language is equally as beautiful. To know that you can use your hands to communicate is such an amazing thing! It has influenced me to learn for sure! What an amazing and beautiful video :)

I love all of the differences, for the sign cooking it looks like each language is doing a part of a recipe, JSL is cutting the ingredients, ASL is cooking and flipping them in a pan and LSF is stirring the pot. I also like how the French sign for love is something powerful that comes from deep inside your chest and that you give to others (but it can also look like throwing up haha)

Sorry, not all Sign Languages are mutual.
Signs like "Computer, Drink, Eat, Subway, Car, Walk" and many more are common visual cues, even non-deaf people around the world can understand.
People from different countries, who know Sign Language can communicate and understand each other quicker than people who don't know Sign Language.
To answer your question, there are International Signs, which are used for events like the Deaflympics. Easy to learn and good for basic communication.

This is so much fun. I use BSL but I recognise some ASL/FSL. Where I live now, I will have to learn FSL, so this is good to learn too. I wish to go back to Japan in the future (I visited in 2009 but struggled because I am severely deaf and even though I know basic Japanese, it was hard... I was in Osaka for 2 weeks on my own.) and hopefully maybe will meet some deaf people next time. Domo arigatou gozaimasu
It is LSF for French Sign Language :) FSL is Filipino Sign Language (which is strongly influenced by ASL)

+HatHolidayxx I know French. it's the LSF I don't know and due to the peculiarities of where I live (3 national languages), there is no set teaching of sign language here for ANYONE. To learn, I have to go out of country, which isn't an option for me right now. *sighs* So I will have to wait...

Learning Japanese sign language, I can see there's a lot there that's cultural, that speaks about Japanese feelings about the words, or uses natural Japanese body language for the words.

I grew up with American Sign language in Texas. But it's kinda hard to remember the lyrics to the hymns, songs from Bear in the Big Blue House, Disney movies, Bible Songs and other songs in American Sign language.

Wonderful video! I love seeing the different signs in languages. I have learnt some basic ISL (Irish Sign Language) and want ot learn more, it seems a little similar to the French Sign Language which is great. I wish ISL was more widely known in Ireland. Sign language is beautiful! :)

Looks that JSL be more quiet in use same the asian people be different to us western people. ASL and FSL looks near but they show different languages. Thanks for show the difference of that all. I can hear, so I never must learn it. But as handicapped since born I be interesting in that a little.

I took two semesters of ASL in college nearly 20 yrs ago and never understood why a completely invented language had so many differences in other countries. I guess it still just the easiest answer. Distance and need. Great video. Question; if I notice a conversation going on in ASL and I watch without being noticed, not to read in on their conversation but to see if I still understand some of it, is that rude?
Thank you megglebagel. I actually started doing some research right after I made the comment. I did not realize how old the languages actually are, my own ignorance and their was no history of origin referred to when I took the classes.

It would be similar to over hearing a spoken language.
If two people wanted to have a private conversation in sign language, they could us subtle signs, kind of like whispering in spoken language.
Obviously, you don't want to be staring.

Do you have any difficulty while watching the person you speak to from a different angle not from the front?
Very good question. Yes it can be challenging to see what a signer is saying from an angle. That’s why many Deaf people and people who can sign, like to face each other when using Sign Language. But it is still possible to understand a signer, even if you’re not facing each other.

So do signers of ASL and JSL communicate with each other by each using their own languages, or do they both defer to International Sign? I've read that International Sign isn't as conventionalised or complex as natural sign languages like ASL and JSL and that it has a limited lexicon. I've also read that ASL is widely learned as a second language and used as a lingua franca, though I'm not sure how true that is.

I understand your point, but there are so few deaf people that I feel that this small community should all be able to communicate with each other worldwide--i.e., using a secondary lingua franca in addition to native/local sign languages, similar to the function of English.

This is so awesome and fascinating. But it's a shame that everyone uses different sign languages and that there isn't a universal lingua franca that everyone can understand.
Would you recommend learning your country's sign language to communicate with natives or ASL since more people speak ASL (and you can find more UA-cam videos on it)?
I would recommend learning your country's sign language, because eventually, you'll be able to go to Deaf clubs or Deaf schools and interact with people in your country who know you're country's sign language. There is also benefit to learning ASL because it is so wide spread around the world and there are more resources, but why not learn both and become Trilingual or more. Also I think once you start to pick up you're country's sign language, you'll begin to see how the Sign Language makes sense and is connected to the culture. When I learned JSL, it was really easy to see how some Japanese Signs looked like the Japanese Kanji or how it matched Japanese culture. It's a really cool way to see a country's perspective through Sign Language.
