Hi Abel, Thank you mate👏. These spring work independently from one another. The Red spring will control the clutch engagement and the yellow spring with work with the rollers. Trial and testing will give you your best combination. More tension on the clutch spring allow RPM to build..

Hi ACP, thanks for coming onboard👍 Nice looking scooter, it reminds me of the Scoots in Thailand. You should try the variator and also if it runs with a carby system check the main jet it maybe running richer than needed. Also a gear kit increases the top speed and works very well on the 125-150cc. The voice can be annoying so you are lucky with the low volume😂😂😂😂 all the best.
What you recommend for me I have stock cylinder Aprilia SR Factory 49cc, 19mm carburetor, 4,5g malossi rollers, mallosi fly clutch with green malossi clutch springs, stock contra spring and woodruff key to advance ignition. What you recommend for me if I want better start and not losing so much top speed and not changing the cylinder?
Try a Polini 3G clutch so the engagement of the clutch can fine tuned this will give more control on the grab of the clutch. The Torque spring may need to be upgraded to keep the gearing low as the rpm increases. You could also trial slightly heavier rollers, 4.8 or 5 gram. Not really more you can do but you should keep experimenting with what you have..
What variator would you recommend for a Suzuki TR50 Street Magic running a stock piston/cylinder (will get a Malossi Sport 68cc big bore and 21mm carb in near future) with derestricted stock exhaust and derestricted CDI unit? Ideally we’re after a top speed of around 80km/h before we do any engine mods.
I do know Malossi make the Variator as I fitted to the Street magic many years ago. The Variator will not provide the 80kph, you need the BBK. (Big Bore Kit)
If you go from a 87 mm dia. strock vari to a 105 dia. Do I need a longer belt for full shift? How would one even know the differences in ramp designs between variator.? It's not published!
To reach your potential top speed yes a longer belt, but keep an eye on the rear pulley and how it is affected. Compare the angle visually, you will notice less angle.

It sounds ok, are you happy with the performance? The parts may be better suited to an engine with a 70cc kit. A higher performing exhuast with variator or slightly heavier rollers. The rollers are light and the fuel/air is ready for something meaner.

excellent videos guys, really informative and clear for the newbies! question..on your webstore you have two different performance variators listed for the cpi based scooter (polini & malossi)..apart from the obvious extra set of rollers in the malossi kit, is there any difference between these two kits? which do you recommend for a cdi unrestricted with no engine mods as of yet? thanks guys thumbs up*
Thank you Brother👌 Essentially they are the same. I recommend replacing the outer fan with this model when installing a VAR. Change the CDI when you hit the rev limiter.
ok so update to this, put new malossi var with fan, new malossi clutch and new malossi kevlar belt on and its running great, heaps better accelaration but now i feel like its bogging down from stationary at lights for like 1 to 2 seconds, is this roller weights related? (i installed the 6gram weights)or is it just because its a completely stock engine apart from unrestricted cdi?@@scooterstreetau
Hi really learned someting after watching this video, I hope that you can help me with something. I have an aerox 2T everything standard the only thing i changed is the varioring and the plug in the exhaust and i am already going 70kmp gps. Im gonna change the exhaust to a gianelli reverse and i ordered a multivar. How do thing that this will change my topspeed and torque. Because right now my scooter really feels slow the first 40 kilometers. Thanks for ur help!
You will require a Cylinder upgrade for torque and top speed. The Gia. Reverse is a great performer on the Aerox so match it will a high class street cylinder. The exhaust and variator will give a good increase, expect 80+KPH.
Hello can you maybe help me I have a malaguti f10 jetline it is all stock standart I think I want to start on cvt tuning first as if I don’t want to go big bore, if you say upgrade the rolls I don’t know how much gr should I get , maybe some white or yellow springs for clutch and the yellow big spring that connects clutch to the other thing, and about belt what’s belt should I go with to give me full travel anyways thanks.
Measure and weigh the factory rollers and then you have a place to start. I recommend an adjustable clutch. Belt, do the regular checks and see if there is more travel or is it at max..
Thanks Brad for the in depth explanation. I'm looking at Malossi upgrades for a Vespa Sprint 150cc. It should be the 2000 kit. I'm told by the shop that I gotta choose within acceleration or top speed, that I can't have em both ways. Yet, the internet testifies that I will get improvements in both. With casual understanding of gear ratios, if i do get improvements in both, where's the top speed coming from? Does the kit have an oversize variator, therefore i get a bit more top speed?
Thank you✌The ramp plate angle and the rollers is where the advantage will come from, I would lean towards the opinion of the shop. How much top speed are you desiring? If you want lots of top speed you have the wrong bike. Scooter are about acceleration and manoeuvrability in traffic. Luckily for you the Vespa looks really cool too, Win win. The Variator does work in these models. We have a video on this.
@@scooterstreetau You're right, scooters aren't made for speed. While it's nice to have a bit more top speed, not losing any would be my main concern. Since the top speed "size" of the variator is the same, wouldn't the top speed be the same anyway?

@@theleoto2691 Start again, go back to the original parts and add 1 part at a time. The rollers are light, try heavier rollers. The clutch should be guided by the variator and rollers, again one part at a time.
For Hilly areas.. is it okay or can I use a lil shorter belt thn the stock !? What about the wideness of the belt ? Alil shorter and lil fatter , wider will be okay ? Lastly are all variator, clutch size same?( Especially the hole)
If the current belt is in the lowest possible gear then a different dimension belt will make no difference. Wider belt will not get to the lowest gear and the scooter will be very slow to accelerate. The answer for hill approach is in the rollers and the clutch sync. The variator must move to a lower gear when the rev drops and this is doe in the rear pulley working with the correct roller weight. The variator hole (Shaft or Hub) is set by the crankshaft dimension. Variator and clutch, No not all the same.
Hi good vid. I've bought a Lexmoto Diablo 125 but notice that the Apollo 125 has better performance but its the same engine. Is this achieved via a different ecu, upgraded transmission or maybe both? Many thanks... jj
Yeah it's 8.6 v 8.7 and 56mph v 66mph? Was gonna start maybe fitting performance variator with original rollers not the lighter ones that come with the Naraku variator. Many thanks.... jj
@@johnjones-uz4pi Try to source the parts diagram and compare the parts in the transmission of the 2 scooters, Isolate the different part number and that will give you the answer to if they run different parts or not. Also search the head and cylinder.
Hi Scooter street. Love these videos. Would you say on a Yamaha bws if you have a Malossi performance variator with some mods. Do you need to change the rollers to the same size as factory and do you need to change them to the same weight as factory?
Thanks Duke, The Malossi weights are a different size to the factory so the answer is no.. You can approach it this way, start with the Malossi rollers that are provided in the Variator kit. Ride and trial these so you get a good feel of how the engine performs and then head back to the workshop. Now you can start to change the roller weights. With a test ride after each change you will then have a starting point to compare if the ride is better than the original set in the Variator, or are more changes required. I hope this makes sense.
Hello there! I have a gilera runner sp50 2012 I just got a yasuni r Im going to get new rollers clutch springs and big clutch spring buti have around 100$ left maybe more what part do you recommend i get? A sports variator a sports clutch or maybe even a 19mm card? Whats the best performance peace for what i got right now
You will need to increase jet. 10% lighter on the rollers but gain trial and testing. Fit sport clutch springs to the original clutch, If you are unable to change the clutch. Save up for the 70cc.
@@geni.zeqiri you start with the ones supplied and then experiment from there, best way to learn how differing weights affect the acceleration and RPM. Go 3000 minimum on the clutch springs.
I just put a new Leo v exhaust on my aprilia sr 50 2020 and I was trying to change the jet to a 64 but the clamp that holds the carb to the motor has no screw or any other way to remove it there is also there’s weird anti tampering screws. How do I change the jet?
I think you need a torx anti-tamper bit. It has a hole in the middle, so it fits round the pin. Any good tool store should have them, even ebay, or Amazon. If the manifold is like my Piaggio, it's just a cable tie. Cut it off, and replace with a new one.
No. the variator will allow finer tuning and depending on the scooter model give more acceleration. Heavier rollers can make the engine work harder to achieve cruising speed so I am not sure about economy.?.? Consider allowing the engine to rev lower while achieving the cruising speed with smallest effort. A big power push from the start sucks the fuel.
Hi there watching from sweden. I have an kymco super 9 ac and from stock it went around 30mph and when I shifted my restricted boss drive to an unrestricted one it makes around 40mph and accelerates alot slower. Any idea what i should do to gain more top speed without losing more acceleration?
HI and Welcome🦘. I am unsure why it losses acceleration. So you replaced the variator shaft to another? Was it the same length. Let me know and I will try to work out best answer for you. Usually changing the shaft will not have an effect on the take off, it only adds to the top speed.
Hi, Considering a 180 malossi kit for my 2021 xmax what are your thoughts as far as long term use goes? And it’s safe to assume a performance variator will go well with the kit?
Hi Jay, Having not done this job to this model I really have no specific notes to add. However, from previous experience as always, get the installation done correct from the start and upkeep the maintenance and checks to ensure the machine run at its best. Do all research as yes you may need to replace the injection unit, varaitor and exhaust.
@@damedkhar2912 I have not heard of this model, did you ask the shop where you bought it? You need to find out from the Variator manufacturers, there will be a similar make and model that has a fitment.
My scooter is a China 150cc made by Dongfang. I guess I'm gonna have a problem finding parts/mods that improve the bike huh cus it's not a popular name brand? The company says the bike has a "Speed Limiter" but I suspect it may have many different types of restrictions from air intake restrictions, CDI, stock exhaust needle position etc. I want to find and remove or bypass all I can before I spend a lot on parts. I have no clue if I'll be able to do that or find them all.
There are many compatible parts for the Chinese scooters. The engine number may give an idea of the engine type. It could be GY6 or later model. Usually the Chinese scooters are copied from an already existing make so do some reasearch and you will find some parts, start with the GY6 engine.. I see it has a 157QMJ engine which is GY6-150cc😁
@@scooterstreetau Yep.. first thing I did when I got the bike was check the stamped tag under the CVT to make sure it was a real 157QMJ. I was afraid the Chinese scooter company would rip me off cus it had a lot of bad reviews. I was lucky.. bike was un damaged and had all the extra parts I needed to assemble. I'm glad the bike runs well because $969.00 (1,184 with shipping) was all I could afford. My plan is to mod it over the next year and get it to a solid 70 mph if possible. There is even a 171cc big bore kit I can get for 140 dollars that does not require boring the cylinder.
So i bought a motoforce racing v2 variator for my peugeot speedfight 2. It has an exhaust and airfilter but when i put the variator on it didnt work at all. When you go to accelerate revs go up but the it like doesnt respond to the throttle. So should i put lighter rollers? I tried the ones with the variator 8.5g and then 6.7g and 5.5g and it didnt work with any of them.
@@nikolaus2206 My first question would be to check the compatibility of the variator, make sure it is the correct Variator for your Speedfight and secondly is it fitted correctly? Fit only the variator assembly and the shaft and use the rollers with the same roller weight as the original variator. Try 3 of the 8.5gram (25gram) rollers just for a quick test, this may show you that you need lighter rollers, if it responds better then use the correct weight for all 6 rollers which may be 4.5 or there abouts.
Hi, I have a question for you, I have Piaggio NRG Power LC year 2008, on it I have Malossi Sport 70cc cylinder with Leo Vince TT exhaust, I have a stock variator with rollers that came with exhaust they are 4.8 grams, rare pulley is totaly stock just with blue clutch springs that make scooter to go at 5000rpm, belt is also stock piaggio belt, scooter goes 100km/h, rpms are around 10 700rpm, I think this is quite high because kit has peak power at 9000rpm and exhaust peak power is at 8500rpm, I dont know if my belt goes all the way up but should I put roller weights that are heavier lets say 5.5g to decrease the rpm and gain more km/h. Carb is dellorto 17.5 stock with 75 main jet and stock filter, everything, else is stock. What elese should I do to scooter in your oppinion, what is missing.Thank you !
100kms is great, you should be happy with that effort. There is an opportunity to fit a higher class exhaust. Try heavier rollers 6.2. and lower as required. Pen mark the variator face to confirm the final belt position. Remove snorkel from Air box if it is still present, and jet up..
@@scooterstreetau It is great, maybe yasuni R for exhaust next, I want to stqy i base class, I will try those things to get some more fine tunning with it, restrictor is there still but I wil remove it and tune the carb a bit, I think that I have enough fuel just missing some air, according to sparkplug
The variator difference in the Speedfight 100cc with and without Kat, is the total length of the parts combined when installed. No Kat is Longer.. If you have a look at the Fixed Cover n the Malossi variator you will see the difference immediately, the no Kat is the deeper/higher cover.
These parts are made for scooters, there is a correct fitment for each common scooter engine, so please ensure you use the correct Variator for your engine.
Im the father. We brought the bws 4t before my son can drive. So i took it to home. 55kmh. I remove the washer. 62kmh. Malossi variator and clutch, 69kmh
Can you also state the cons of using a performance variator. Also if you use a performance variator, do you need to change the rear part?(female sheave/clutch part) so that they have the same angle?
Watch the video, it is all about why performance variators improve the performance of the transmission. No, you don't need the Rear pulley upgrade. You do not need these parts, you just want them😁

Any and all thoughts are welcome
Hej Kompis. You could start by changing the Variator this will be main gain without changing the Cylinder.. If you change the exhaust you should change the air filter and the main jet.. T
Hi I have a Piaggio zip with only 3k miles. Completely standard other then sports pipe. When I bought it I noticed the side casing was hot to the touch after short rides. I took the casing off and the belt had been rubbing bad and there was bits of rubber all over the casing. I’ve replaced the belt and cleaned everything. Checked the clutch is moving free and it’s still getting hot. Any ideas?
It should be hot in the transmission case as there is friction involved, it is the job for the cooling fan on the front pulley to kep the air regulated, is the cooling fan in good order? Also the belt should not be rubbing.
Does the cooling fan pull in outside air or just circulate air? And or is outside air forced in the case. Or does the rear vent pull a vac on case air? As the bike moves forward?
Only certain models will increase the top speed when fitting a variator. A good understanding of the variator to help get the best out of the transmission.
@@scooterstreetau thing is that i changed the guides original from piaggio, but backplate seems worn too, and they wouldnt really fit good, i had the multivar 2000, but here we can only go 45km so went back to stock after i got caught, the original variator has 10000ks on it. And deep grooves in it, has the restrictor ring in it too. Sucks but thats the law. Luckily got a couple of other piaggios for fun.😄

Why don't manufacturers put performance variators on scooters from the factory? Why send them out with sub-standard variators? Surely they know about performance variators - couldn't they just copy them? Thumbs upped.
Yes good question and asked many times. Fitting the basic option variator from factory is cheaper and also stays within the 50cc category restrictions. Most 50cc scooters are made to suit counties which have strict speed and power restrictions which they deem safer for first Licence riders. Where I am from the speed is restricted to 55KPH. So the manufacturers make the scooter to fit within the guides lines of the Regulator/Government.
You could leave it alone. The Piaggio variator is much better than a Yamaha one. But it's still made to a price point. They are made as cheaply as possible. Fitting a better quality part is never a bad thing. It's definitely smoother with a performance version. And holds the revs more consistently.
Would still benefit from a better performing variator. The Peugeot ones are not as good as the Polini, or Malossi variator. Very much built down to a price.

It sounds ok, are you happy with the performance? The parts may be better suited to an engine with a 70cc kit.
A higher performing exhuast with variator or slightly heavier rollers. The rollers are light and the fuel/air is ready for something meaner.

@@AverageTdiUser Try a longer belt. This take diagnostics and testing as the belt ust cover low speed and top speed.

Many thanks... jj

The specs are very similar. I like the Apollo styling.

@@scooterstreetau thanks so much for the advice mate I’ll give it a go

I think you need a torx anti-tamper bit. It has a hole in the middle, so it fits round the pin.
Any good tool store should have them, even ebay, or Amazon.
If the manifold is like my Piaggio, it's just a cable tie. Cut it off, and replace with a new one.
You can remove the air box and then remove the carby from the intake side or roll the carby so you can access the bowl. Start with 62.

if im using heavy roller just for fuel efficiency. do i need to use performance variator as well? im just mildly cruising between 80kmh-100kmh
No. the variator will allow finer tuning and depending on the scooter model give more acceleration.
I'm glad the bike runs well because $969.00 (1,184 with shipping) was all I could afford. My plan is to mod it over the next year and get it to a solid 70 mph if possible. Fit only the variator assembly and the shaft and use the rollers with the same roller weight as the original variator. I took the casing off and the belt had been rubbing bad and there was bits of rubber all over the casing. I’ve replaced the belt and cleaned everything.

Why don't manufacturers put performance variators on scooters from the factory? Why send them out with sub-standard variators? Surely they know about performance variators - couldn't they just copy them? Thumbs upped.
Yes good question and asked many times. Fitting the basic option variator from factory is cheaper and also stays within the 50cc category restrictions. Most 50cc scooters are made to suit counties which have strict speed and power restrictions which they deem safer for first Licence riders. Where I am from the speed is restricted to 55KPH. So the manufacturers make the scooter to fit within the guides lines of the Regulator/Government.
when u got a piaggio so there is no need for other variator
You could leave it alone. The Piaggio variator is much better than a Yamaha one. But it's still made to a price point. They are made as cheaply as possible.
Fitting a better quality part is never a bad thing. It's definitely smoother with a performance version. And holds the revs more consistently.
