    Yay! So glad that they are both finally up. Awesome job! And you're not kidding about them venturing out. I've had two up my arm already...that never happens to me! I"m so glad that you two got the chance to hang and that we could do this. So much fun!

      Thanks Tom! It was a blast. As a sling, my older one actually ran out and was all over me as well! But all was well, obviously. Just chalk it up to adventures in spidering! :-D

    I heard moisture for Caribenas is old school and the reason why they often die as slings due to boook lung Fungus ... My two slings were just fine well ventilated and lightly moisted ... The guy I bought them from also had tons of Caribena slings that were not high moisture ... well ventilated and he had no losses ... Wonder why they die ? Too much moisture .... First Spiders I had ... no experience .... no moisture ... no problems ....

      Deep Doubts bout U They certainly can do well in dryer enclosures, and I am definitely not advocating keeping them wet, only with some moisture. As you and I both mentioned, ventilation is key, even more so than moisture .

      How often do you moist your slings enclosure?

      I have done the same thing dry substrate but a water cap up high for the sling but a room humidity of 60%-70% due to 850 gallons of fish tanks.

    Great video. I totally agree about moisture and slings. I went too far the other way with mine and had tons of ventilation and not enough humidity and paid the price, losing three of my six that way. Now I'm super careful to keep the water dishes full and spray the enclosure and the remaining three slings are doing great. Thanks for making this video.

    • @rachaels8-leggedwonders160
      @rachaels8-leggedwonders160  6 років тому +4

      Thank you :) Finding that moisture/ventilation balance is so important. Honestly though, as touchy as these little guys are, it really may not have been your fault that they passed. Sometimes they just pass, and there’s no obvious explanation. I’m glad you found the video helpful!

    My aviculara aviculara sling at 1/2" is my first spider. I have it in a room thats 25C and 60%-70% humidity. The room is primarily my snake room and my sling enclosure is a 4.5" deli cup upside down with another one with the top cut out and the lid on to make the soil layer. I have a bottle cap for drinking. I dont have to do anything on the top since its bottom opening.
    The sling made a web 4 days after being in the new enclosure and is eating great.
    I hope it will grow to adult i was primarily trying to get an aviculara caribena versicolor but they didnt have any. I was told that they are extremely hard to keep as slings but i really wanted to try and figured the room is ideal already for thats species. My first enclosure the breeder said to keep it in was similar to yours but half the size and in that room the sling kept circling the vial and looked uncomfortable after 3 days. So i made a new one with massive amount of cross ventilation and since then it circled for 2 days and since settled down. It has always eaten regularly 2 times a week.
    I hope im doing everything right i did 4 months prior research on multiple youtube vids and a few breeders before buying the spider. I have gotten later on a bracipelma hamorii as a worst case so i at least have a spider and dam it eats ALOT. I accidentally put in 5 crickets and they were all gone in 3 hours!!

  • @sirwhitecrayon2499

    Great video! As slings I've always kept them in the drier side and only misting/wetting a section of their web and small portion of the substrate. I always wait for the substrate to dry out and then re-wet it to avoid getting too stuffy inside. I've raised two of these this way in the pill vial kind of enclosure without issues.
    I also only fed them pre-killed prey until they were about 1.5". I alwayy had issue with live prey ending up at the bottom of the vials or worse, buried dubias.

    • @rachaels8-leggedwonders160
      @rachaels8-leggedwonders160  6 років тому +3

      SirWhiteCrayon that’s great! They certainly can do well in a dryer enclosure, I just prefer to err on the side of caution with the extra moisture. I definitely don’t advocate keeping them saturated or overly wet.
      Buried dubia are the worst! I’m a big advocate of dead, or very disabled prey for slings, as well :)
      Thanks so much for watching!

    • @sirwhitecrayon2499
      @sirwhitecrayon2499 6 років тому +3

      I prefer the drier setup, because the struggle is real to get bolus and poop out of there and I don't want a to contend with a mold situation. In fact there's still a leg from the previous molt in there. lol The struggle is real with the flighty arboreals. Mine is about 2", so it's getting rehouse into a 32oz deli cup after this next molt, where it can grown into juvy stage nicely.

    • @rachaels8-leggedwonders160
      @rachaels8-leggedwonders160  6 років тому +1

      SirWhiteCrayon I completely understand the struggle! It is real! Haha. Glad to hear your juvie is doing well :)

    I keep my C versicolor sling and 12 Avicularia geroldi slings a bit different but the basics are the same. I want to do a care video on them too but I want to wait a bit till they have grown some more, but I have had about 4 succesful molts from the C versicolor and the first one of the 12 A geroldi slings has molted succesful into 2nd instar :D
    I also have a 1,1 juvinile or sub-adult (not sure when they are what really) Avic Avic that are doing great :D

I have a juvenile pink toe and I had 3 different enclosures for it - I originally got a tub because I didn’t realize it was so small so I put it into a pickle jar with dirt and a piece of wood to climb - and a water dish.. the only thing I’m worried about is it not finding it’s food in a shorter enclosure..
