At 2:48, the item on the floor beside the saw are both used for gathering ice blocks from rivers, lakes, ponds, early form of refrigeration was ice taken during Winter, sawed into blocks, carried by the item on floor, and generally stored in ice houses packed in sawdust. To slow melting of blocks. Most homes had ice chests or boxes to keep perishables, just like modern fridge but, with more water involved. Yes, frighteningly enough I remember grandparents using one. When pronouncing Maine Conservation Corps, it's Corr. p is silent and Corp is singular.
Writing a book about living on island in 1960's with State caretaker/grandfather & grandmother! Historic novel to be published soon: Swan Island in the Kennebec.
I'm from Portland Maine! Ive never even heard of this place.. but man isn't Maine beautiful? all these little islands we have... all these islands were formed when the icecaps retracted and cut Maine up, so when you look at a geographical map of Maine it looks like claws cut the land back.. just a fun fact! :p - anyway great video guys! love the content
I love Swan Island. Grew up in Bowdoinham Maine and we took field trips with our class here. I remember how huge the Bald Eagle nests were. A beautiful place!
There is flicker site of this girl whos photographed all the abandoned Homesteads in Eastern Montana, It's amazing as people left everything, Always amazes me that these places are abandonded
I wonder if the park service ever considered that they could rent those houses to campers, like Airbnb, and that could go a long ways in preserving them. They own tuns of old homes and even towns. They just set there deteriorating. That makes no since. They could rent them for retreat get aways or seasonal camps for kids. It wouldnt take much if the island already has power.
At 5:54 the style of architecture of this house is known as a saltbox house. It was common in the northeastern US during the time frame in which it was built. A saltbox house has two stories in the front and a single story in back.
I've lived in Richmond my entire life and as soon as I saw the caption I knew it was going to be Swan Island. There's people there literally all the time but these articles online seem to like to advertise it as this creepy abandoned ghost town 🙄
that tower would be great for a hunting stand. I think it'd be great to purchase that island and farm the open pastures, of course leaving one for wildlife and or cattle.
look for places in Louisiana in the bayou deep in the woods sounds sketchy yeah; but back in slave times there were "tribes" of runaway slaves that u might be able to find historical items..they exist really hard to find or even an old plantation
Hi Dylan, I just ran across your videos. Thank you taking the time to share them. I am in MD. If you ever happen to be down this way, send a mail. Maybe I could come and take some pics. Good luck on your ventures and BTW the next time you are hiking up in ME, dont forget your chaps.
I hope they can eventually be able to fully clean up the island from the pollution. I know there is also a Swans Island as well not far from Bar Harbor.
Most of those houses are pretty clean, new padlocks, fairly new paint, bunch of antiques inside... Looks more like a guided tour of preserved and maintained houses than a truly abandoned town. That's kinda like going into an amusement park on a day when it's closed and saying it's abandoned because nobody's there.
Agreed. Abandoned and unoccupied are two very different things. Not only does someone own all of that property, but they still mow the lawns and keep the paint fresh as well.
Pretty sure it's nothing but at 7:38 you don't see anything in the top window nothing broken Ect then at 7:41 when he gets closer you see a white thing in the window looks like a face js
hey I found your channel a few days ago and watched all your videos and followed your instagram. You are a great visual content creator and inspired me to get back into photography. Love your work! Keep it up :D
hey alex 29 from connecticut lived in maine on and off all of my life so far in southwest harbor maine and parkman maine never even heard of this place till now
I grew up right here in Richmond, Maine. Fun little story, there's a ferry that goes to and from the island I believe daily, and one time my class was supposed to go to Swan Island... but the ferry sunk. so yeah, I've lived so close to swan island for so long, but I've never been there before! That's my little story.
The Great Depression was in the 30s, not the 40s; by the 40s our economy boomed because of the war. I imagine the people there farmed and sold excess to buy what they couldn't produce. Didn't see signs of any industry. Probably in the 40s the young adults left; the males into the military and others for good paying defense jobs and then nobody came back. The town, such as it was, didn't appear to have a sustaining population. The structures seem in remarkably good shape for not having been lived in for more than 60 years. Park Service probably doing some restoration. I think that tower may have been a fire watch tower, but I could be wrong.
Maine Conservation Corps is not "Maine Conservation Corpse." President Obama beat you to the punch, with that error in pronunciation. And, Swan's Island, off the coast of Mt. Desert Island, is not in northern Maine. It is in eastern Maine.

Love the video footage of Swan Island! Lived there during 1960's w caretaker/farmer grandfather & grandmother

How interesting.

I love Swan Island. Grew up in Bowdoinham Maine and we took field trips with our class here. I remember how huge the Bald Eagle nests were. A beautiful place!
I love those old wooden houses they bring back such good memories of when I was younger .Thanks for the cool video FLORB .
Plenty of them here in richmond lol
There is flicker site of this girl whos photographed all the abandoned Homesteads in Eastern Montana, It's amazing as people left everything, Always amazes me that these places are abandonded
At 6:24 if you put on headphones it sounds like a baby laughing and a person starting to talk over your voice. Kinda creepy

Living in Colorado now, but lived in Richmond for around 20 years. Great little town and Swan Island is a treasure!
great location for a low budget horror film
At 5:54 the style of architecture of this house is known as a saltbox house. It was common in the northeastern US during the time frame in which it was built. A saltbox house has two stories in the front and a single story in back.
Truly enjoyable video, Dylan. The spinning wheel was used to spin sheep's wool into yarn so it could then be knitted into sweaters and blankets.
The Great Depression was in the 1930's. World War II was in the 1940's. Cool island!!
Mr Tubbs house looks so amazing and simple. I love how its locked too so no one would break in and vandalize it
I've lived in Richmond my entire life and as soon as I saw the caption I knew it was going to be Swan Island. There's people there literally all the time but these articles online seem to like to advertise it as this creepy abandoned ghost town 🙄
The marble bust of the old woman was really spooky looking!
that tower would be great for a hunting stand. I think it'd be great to purchase that island and farm the open pastures, of course leaving one for wildlife and or cattle.
This is definitely a pretty exciting and also interesting video🌍👍
corps is pronounced 'core' 😀
I believe the tower is a fire-watch tower.
Cool video. Thanks for sharing, sir!
So good to see it's not been vandalized!I plan to go to Maine once the Corona passes,I hope soon.I am in the UK.😃
Those must be the best mowed lawns of any abandoned town in the country
i've been in those houses. we went on a feild trip for school back in the 90's
For having been abandoned in the 40's, it is remarkably well kept.
They must have ghosts mowing the lawn and replacing windows.
they town technically uses it as a camping location/tourist spot ... i mean its unclaimed territory if im not mistaken or uncontested?
If you have a place you want me to explore!
Email me the location and a description :)

I live in Maine and I know people who live in that town right now it's not completely abandoned
I hope they can eventually be able to fully clean up the island from the pollution. I know there is also a Swans Island as well not far from Bar Harbor.
Love the video and loved how you told us the history too.
I love history. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.
Too bad you can't own any of the property, it would make a great place to build an off the grid homestead.
Jeff Slttn. I thought exactly the same. Let's go on the Abandoned Island Ride. A shame.....it seems so fake :(
Agreed. Abandoned and unoccupied are two very different things. Not only does someone own all of that property, but they still mow the lawns and keep the paint fresh as well.
He literally states on the video "I wouldn't consider it abandoned.. " and the goes on to explain that its being preserved.
Watch the whole video.
Hey cool. Now people know where to go steal antiques from someone who has their old house locked up.
Pretty sure this will be my new place of residence when the civil unrest starts in the u.s.
2:54 the wheel is a spinning wheel meant for turning wool into yarn
6:22 WTF ? Is that a child crying?
Probably a loon. Very common in maine rivers and lakes and very creepy sounding.
Wtf holly shit!!
The great depression was not in the 1940"s.
Houses looks cleaner than my bedroom.
Kimsea Chea because there’s not much in the houses
😂😂
ha! I live like 5 miles up the road from there. Welcome to Richmond!
anyone else hear that, its kinda hard with him talking but, it sounds like a kid laughing and chatter.
It looked haunted to me.
Terri Seaton I'm not a city person and it did sound liek people were talking nearby maybe but I also heard a dog and birds
at the window he's looking into with the camera
TheAnonymousGuy yes
He does say folks camp there on the island, maybe that sound was drifting up from nearby
Pretty sure it's nothing but at 7:38 you don't see anything in the top window nothing broken Ect then at 7:41 when he gets closer you see a white thing in the window looks like a face js
Wished I could add my screen shots to prove what I'm looking at

Thing in the corner is a grandfather clock. My grandparents had the same one.
2st house looks well maintained
the houses look almost too new.
That's exactly what I was thinking. No way all those houses have been abandoned since the 1940s.
Old Town canoes are good.
Abandoned?
It's really well kept though.
I wonder who maintain the ground shortgrass ?
I'm from hazlehurst Mississippi but been living mineral Wells TX for over 2 years.

In the 1940's everyone left the island during the great depression ??
