There must have been something about '73. In America, that was the year Secretariat set the record in all three American Triple Crown races. His records have never been broken, and Rummy's probably won't, either. Love these horses.

All 3 famous racehorses have something in common. Secretariat the fastest but loved what he did just like rum he posed and let everyone know about it. Seabiscuit both had leg and feet issue and also were on the small side same as rum but red rum is the best horse of the three even though they were all inspirational.
Crisp ran an outstanding race - I could cry for him even now. Don't think Richard Pitman was a bad loser or disrespectful even though it may seem that way from listening to him here. Saw a video in which he talked his way through the race and said he made mistakes with Crisp the main one being trying to wake him up and stay focused and I got exactly what he meant having experienced the same with horses towards the end of cross country or endurance races - just suddenly hitting the wall with what I call “cheese string legs” leaving you with the option of pushing on or pulling up. I guess at that point of the Grand National in 1973 pulling up just wasn't an option. He'd cleared the fences and just had to make the painfully long run home with the deafening, soul-destroying sound of hooves and nostrils steaming up behind. I'd have been proud as hell to ride Crisp all you'd see would be me hanging off his neck hugging and kissing him giving it “Good lad good lad!! C'mon fella you've earned a drink and a hose off and sod it - there's a bumper packet of tic-tacs with your name on it too G'lad!”
Arkle was the greatest chaser I have ever seen, but even I have to admit that Red Rum had no equal at Aintree. Three Grand National wins and runner up on another two occasions cements Red Rum's unparalleled position as the King of Aintree. I can confidently predict that Rummy's record will NEVER be bettered.
But Tiger Roll hasn’t won a National with 12 stone on his back and the fences are much easier now than they were in Red Rum’s day so there’s no comparison in my book
Also used to see all the horses going out down Birkdale every day to train on the beach..... beautiful sight! 💙💙

I used to love going to Ginger's yard, which was round the corner from my great granny on Fernley Road, and seeing Rummy and the other horses 💙✊

In 1973 I put my 50p pocket money on Rummy. The queue at the bookmakers must have been long as my Dad didn’t come back for hours!!!!
