    Such was the reputation of Bechers Brook back then that the 5th and 21st fence was often referred to as 'the one before Bechers '. Nowadays Bechers is just 'fence 6'

      I recall in the building up to the race, the press would describe the fences as formidable, fearsome and daunting, now its just the grand national

    Grittar was such an underrated horse..he won the Fox Hunters in 1981, won the National in 82, 5th in 1983, 10th in 84 ..never fell around the big old National Fences.. Always overlooked.

      i wouldnt have said he was overlooked, his famous 82 win with the oldest jockey is well remembered, finished lame in 84 never ran again

      great national horse, seeing a clip of him in his last national age 12 carrying a huge weight at the 2nd canal turn a huge ditch in those days he just flew over it whilst the other horses at the back with him cried enough

    My first ever bet on a horse race (50p each way, thanks mum) and I couldn't believe the fortune I had won. The run in was so exciting and I remember the race well. Luckily I wasn't bitten by the gambling bug because I've only picked 2 National winners since!!

      Is Jenny Pitman still around? I can never forget this race because I backed Greasepaint that finished 2nd ...and that was the closest I ever came to having a Grand National winner. LoL.

    the grey horse tower moss after falling at the first is last running loose at bechers first time, he jumps all the fences and leading around fence 18 before refusing fence 20 ending jonjo o neils hope of completing,

    One of the closest and most exciting finishes on record, Corbiere was fading and Greasepaint was coming up like an express train ! (he had been 4 lengths behind at the elbow). Credit surely has to be given to the plucky little Irish horse Greasepaint who ran in this race 4 times finishing a close 2nd twice (in this race and 1984 ) 4th in 1985 , and 6th in 1986.
    One of the unluckiest runners ever.

  • @andrewwarmington

    My first ever bet, I think, was on this race for Greasepaint. I shouted for him, my sister for Corbiere because of the woman trainer, as Greasepaint closed in just that little bit too late.

    you can just feel the excitement of the race back then, watching a proper grand national jumping those unique fences steeped in history , you can flush all the races from 2013 onwards down the toilet now for all i care

    • @shaunspadah5790
      @shaunspadah5790 6 років тому +3

      the modern race is mostly quite boring though the 18 race was ok, slightest problem and there missin fences, all crowds kept back, constanly meddlin with fences 3 fallers at bechers make the fence a bit smaller next year probably

    • @shaunspadah5790
      @shaunspadah5790 5 років тому +4

      the problem with the race today is there are no boogie fences, they can change the race like the old bechers used to do, the ditches also caused problems, theres not one fence that would worry the jockeys today meaning its lost all its uniqueness and is just the same as the scottish, irish and welsh nationals

    • @levisjeans1901
      @levisjeans1901 4 роки тому +4

      Thanks Richard and Shaun, I agree with your comments. No right minded person wants to see injury and death, but the thrills of the spills at bogey fences like Bechers Brook made the race a real one off

    Funny how odds have developed. Back in the 50s and 60s you got odds like 100-6 and he 100-7. Even in this race, odds like 13-1 and 60-1, you’d never see them today

      mark199 After winning he would come 3rd in 1984 & 1985, surprisingly fell at fence 4 in 1986, and finally came 12th in 1987.

      Was my first and only Grand National winner at the age of 12 when I was obsessed with horse racing.
      I met Corbiere and Jenny Pitman that year, as Jenny was born in Leicestershre and I'm from Leicester and they came to a County Show in my area! I was actually star struck by a horse! And Jenny of course.
      What a childhood memory to cherish. 👍🙂
