With Winterfell under siege and facing defeat, Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) rejects the advice of Maester Luwin (Donald Sumpter) to abandon the castle and flee to the Night's Watch, and decides to fight to the death with his men. However, during a rallying speech, Theon is knocked unconscious by Dagmer (Ralph Ineson) and betrayed by his own men, who drag him off. Luwin, in an attempt to save Theon, is mortally wounded by Dagmer. Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) and his party emerge from hiding to find Winterfell sacked and Luwin dying in the Godswood, where he declares his loyalty and love for the Starks before having Osha (Natalia Tena) end his life. Bran and his group then escape the ruined remains of Winterfell, bound for the Wall.
_"There must always be a stark at Winterfell"_
I think the saddest part seeing Winterfell burning on the horizon as the last Starks flee Winterfell for their lives.
***** Indeed. And as someone who's read ADWD, I do know what you mean.
***** True enough. Although, Theon certainly did not help himself ending Stark rule in Winterfell.
**Spoilers to follow**
There is at least some feeling of justice coming. Stark loyalists like House Manderly prepare to switch to Stannis as he besieges Winterfell. And Asha Greyjoy after failing to convince Stannis to spare Theon, looks set to convince him to instead to behead him in Stark tradition.
I really hope that Ramsay Bolton will be burned alive by Melisandre. An eye for an eye. Ramsay serves the most painful death going.
well, we're back!
Can Acar manderly isn’t clear either, his story about wex following rickon and rickon and osha on skaagos doesn’t make much sense either. Wouldn’t surprise if he already got rickon with him
When someone spoilered that Winterfell was going to burn, I first thought it was season 7 or 8 and that Daenerys was responsible for it.
But that was the part I skimmed over or forgot.
Love Osha's character development. From pulling a knife on Brann and threatening to either kill or ransom him, to caring about Brann and Rickon like her own sons. Now that's great character development.
I know it’s eight years later but this is why her best lines are in her departure with bran.
“Your family was good to me when you had no cause to.” “Watch out for him. This one means the world to me.”
Too bad Osha died in the later seasons. I really liked her.
@@Alexander-ms9ht yup, for no other reason than D&D wanted a deathscene
It’s annoying to me how she was forgotten by so many, such a vital person for the Stark family.
The show did her dirty.
The saddest part is easily when he says "I'll be right here." 2:39
Denying he is dying for their sake, great scene.
@Praetorian - Preach. ;-;
I don't think he was denying his death.
I think his final words to them were more an affirmation of his place of belonging. He had spent all his days as maester under the Starks and their strange old God, but he respected them and their ways. He passed away beneath the weirwood, accepting both the old and the new.
I think it's kind of beautiful.
Or something.
He wasn’t denying death… or lying… he didn’t move, he was even buried there.
@@Dexroid He’d grown up in a warm climate. He then spent most of his adult life almost exclusively within or just outside Winterfell.
The kind of dedication to duty the North respects and honours.
"I feel just fine..."
I DON'T.....

I understand why people think this scene is sad, but think about it - regardless of whether Bran/Rickon found him or not, Luwin would have died. At least in this scenario, he died filled with hope. The two boys he cared for most in the world are alive, when he thought them dead. His last minutes alive were spent in happiness, when otherwise they would have been spent in despair.
Well said.
Exactly, it's sad and beautiful at the same time.
It's still sad for Bran, Luwin was like a father to him. All the time he spend with the old maester, after his father, mother and brothers were gone.
In the books he says he knew they were alive because Bran's legs should have been weak with all the muscle wasted away yet the bodies brought back to Winterfell showed no signs of this.
Also, he got to die quickly rather than being in pain for hours.
Luwin's (a minor character) death scene had infinitely more emotional impact than Dany's in the season finale. That shows you how far the writing fell off.
Kinda crazy how true that is, think of Hodor's final scene vs Dany's lol
FUCK can't people stop spoiling in earlier scenes videos FFS
Luwin is no minor character. He meant a lot to Ned and Catelyn. Read the books.
@@smaug9833 This is Game of Thrones...not ASoIaF. Luwin is a minor/supporting (pick your own adjective) character in the show.
@@bluebeetle8997 before reading the comment look at the year dah
Maester Luwin's cry/smile at 1:31 and his hand reaching out to Bran always gets me 😢 He knows he's about to die but he's happy knowing that he saw the two boys alive before he passes away.
Right. Exceptional acting.
Same here - I love that part. He was a great man and kind man.
Maester Luwin was on of the good persons in this show, there is not much bad in him. Rare man!
Also maester Aemon.
Steven Agreed 100%
Protector of the Realm Who's your favourite character on the show? Just curious.
Steven Was Eddard. Now Davos :)
Protector of the Realm Mine still is Ned- the honourable man living among snakes... I really love Tywin too, but that's mostly thanks to Charles Dance. I also really enjoy Olenna's scenes.
Osha is such an underrated character. Everything she did, she did to protect Bran and Rickon. It’s crazy how in her first scene she was trying to kill Bran. Such amazing character growth
I love that they played the Stark theme for the deaths of Luwin and Hodor to show that they were a part of the family in all but blood and name, and that is proof that House Stark is the only House in Westeros that’s worth a damn.
yeah sorry Mormont...
Most of the North is quite honorable.
@@ChadKakashiyes, Except the Boltons. Everyone in the North hates them.
You forget the Mormont and Tully.
@@miguelcondadoolivar5149 Tully is not North
I'm so sad about Maester Luwin's death. He's one of the best characters and maester like Maester Aemon. It sucks that Luwin and Aemon died and that stupid Pycelle had more screen time than both of them. I hate that maester as much as Tyrion hated him.
+John Michael Gonzales Pycelle's time is coming.
+John Michael Gonzales its fun to see him get slapped around
And finally, he too is dead.
Well in Aemon's case the actor was in his 90's. He died soon after his character on the show. They were probably forced to write him out regardless.
Aemons actor died irl tho
Anyone else wished Luwin had lived and fled with them. Finding out about magic and what Bran really is. It would have been amazing to see his reaction to it all.
I think he might have actually cried to find out his childhood passion was real.
J Mv Pretty sure he intentionally lied to Bran about magic
OR he gave him the closest "scientific" explanation he could concerning our knowledge of magic.

“The stone is strong. Bran told himself, the roots of the trees go deep, and under the ground the Kings of Winter sit their thrones. So long as those remained, Winterfell remained. It was not dead, just broken. Like me, he thought. I'm not dead either.”
Winterfell has stood strong for 8,000 years. She's been sacked and burned twice before and both times she has risen anew. As long as she stands, House Stark will never die.
Look at baby rickon
this poor child has suffered so much. I'm not prepared to see him dying :\\\
:((((((
***** I knowwwww. His death scene was truly heartbreaking. He didn't deserve such a horrible end.
Wasn't exactly "horrible", it was quick...... boom arrow through the heart. The Jon snow way. But yeah. I would've loved to see more of him. Considering he's the only male stark that doesn't have his hands full with a huge commitment (three eyed raven, nights watch....etc). But yeah, RIP Rckon, you will be missed ?! I guess ?.
+Saul Goodman Except he succumbed to his wounds whilst choking on his own blood as his Half-brother (Cousin) looked down on him helpless.
Saul Goodman it was indeed quick, but imo it was heartbreaking seeing him there full of arrows while jon went full rage charge ramsay's army by himself. There's also the fact that he was an innocent and didn't deserve that at all. But well, at least he died quickly as you said and knowing that his brother did everything he could to save him.
3:26 *shivers*
The sound of that blade with the Stark theme... is powerful.
This is my favourite scene of the entire show. The acting, music and direction come together to make this an emotional farewell to Maester Luwin. And when the Stark theme swells as we transition from the death of Luwin to the smoking ruin of Winterfell...Ah that brings tears to my eyes
My favourite scene too👍
Fr that stark music that plays is awesome.
Damn, the music here is just beautiful.
+Roger Smith “Rocket Lord” do yo know the name of the song?
+tacuazinful "kill them all" from the 1st season soundtrack
+Ivan Kalami thanks!
+Ivan Kalami isn't it winterfell from season 2 soundtrack
+tacuazinful Its called Winterfell
"for that i consider myself very lucky" that line break me.
Same, that line..
I haven't cried for a GoT character so far except for Luwin. God I'm gonna miss that old Maester. He served the Starks well, and you gotta give the man credit for trying to save Theon, that traitorous ass.
Rest in peace Ned
Rest in peace Rodrik
and Rest in peace Luwin.
*trecherous
+AlfaBruzer360 that's a different word? He spelled traitorous correctly
+Bailey Deverell Maester Luwin should have been Grand Maester. He would have saved Jon Arryn and provide wise council to that fatass Robert.
now he is regenerated to be Lord President of Gallifrey in Series 9 finale of Doctor Who
Fr, don’t know why his death is so sad. It’s also quite sad in the books, when he dies at the end of literally the last chapter in A Clash of Kings.
Its weird that 90% of the characters in this scene are now dead
Everybody but Bran! Including the *direwolves!*
+Alec Jones The tree?
+Mick G. Dead.
+Mick G. Skinned by Ramsay.
+Alec Jones I wonder if the dire wolves prefer to pee up them?
1:31. That smile. I’m that smile’s what got me. The two things he probably cared for most in the world. He was just so happy and thankful that he got to see them one last time.
One of the most bittersweet deaths in the series. Luwin got to say goodbye with some hope and a final couple of minutes of happiness. Way more than you can say about most of the deaths in the series.
"Go now, with Hodor. Remind him to hold the door."
lol)))
I can just imagine a scene where Jon and Sansa lead Bran to Rickon's crypt, and Bran lies on his little brother's crypt, crying and grieving and regretting that he sent him to the umbers... :(
stop dude, it hurts.
lets all cry together for the dead starks
I think Bran is the three eyed raven now. Don't see him coming back to winterfell or westeros for that matter.
I'd rather see him grieve for Hodor and summer who died because of his screw up and then Osha.
kristy park he should've sent them to Jon
So glad Luwin was able to see them alive before he died. He was so happy.
I was crying with this scene. "I don't want to leave you"....that line broke my heart....
D&D kinda forgot that winterfell had a pond in the godswood and was on a hill
they also forgot kings landing didnt have a wide open field at the front gates, where the execution of melis happened. the shot of jaime returning to kings landing with bron after the scept blew up had kings landing against a mountain overlooking the ocean, then in season 8 theres an army of unsullied in a large open field at the front gares
Steinmetz your forgetting that it was winter and outside kings landing was a desert
It was frozen. You can see it in 6x10.
How would that change this scene in the slightest?
It was frozen u moron, my god u people will take any opportunity to trash D&D even if ur wrong which u r
Poor Maester Luwin ends up dying for Theon, who he obviously did care about, no matter how petulant and stubborn Theon was.
He loved him same as he loved the Stark kids and I think he knew Theon was being pressured by his father
After season 6, I realise this must have been the most sad for Hodor. He had been a servant at Winterfell ever since he was a boy as Willis, back when Ned was a child. To have lived there for well over 30 years and see it in this state must have killed him
The way Rickon says, “We’ll make you better,” breaks my heart. Art Parkinson was a great child actor and his characters deserved better than what he got.
They could have kept Sansa's book storyline intact, and had Rickon be the one Theon saved from Winterfell.
"Not everything...not you." I bawl. Every time I watch this scene. Doesn't matter if I'm immersed in a GoT marathon or seeking out this one scene... I've got tears streaming down my face. The relationship between Maester Luwin, the boys and Osha was wonderful.
I have to say only six words for this scene...Saddest death in Game of Thrones...
Not anymore, hold the door😔
+MrMasterkill56 Especially given that you can't watch any scene with Hodor again without being reminded of it.
:'(
yea, watching robb and cat scenes is fine, but watching hodor scenes always reminds me of s6e5
Hodor tops it, but I'd put this as a close second. Mainly because the acting is spot on.
Maybe in the top three saddest deaths on this show.. Maybe the saddest. It's like the second he sees the boys he doesn't even care about his own fate.
What makes it even sadder is this is the last time they were both alive in winterfell. Bran died in that cave, possessed by Bloodraven, as he himself says he's not Bran, and Rickon was hidden in the last hearth and probably learned Robb and his mother was dead from Greatjon who managed to return home, then betrayed by people who served his brother faithfully, then dies riddled with arrows mere inches from Jon, while his sister wrote him off coldly and matter of factly and gave him up for dead.
Neither really survived the sack of winterfell.
out of all the sad scenes in this show, this one got to me the most. fantastic acting.
+Sarah S yeah especially hodor's acting
This series does know how to break your heart.
The end of season 1 - main "good" character dies;
The end of season 2 - main "good" character's home is burned and his people - murdered;
The end of season 3 - almost all the remaining "good" characters are betrayed and massacred;
The start of season 4 - Stark's ancestral sword "Ice" is melted marking the complete Lannister's victory;
The end of season 5 - main "good" character dies again.
The utter joy on Luwin's face as he sees the boys alive and well. He's dead. He knows. And he is absolutely _fulfilled_ by the sight of Rickon running toward him and Hodor carrying Bran behind. His life is done, and he's at peace with that. But he needed to see the children he pulled into the world alive and do whatever else he could to see them safe before he _allowed_ himself to die. And he died at peace, knowing the charges he'd raised and loved since their first days were in the safest hands that he could ask for.
The North remembers.
After Luwin said "pulled you into this world" I wanted to cry
I can’t even describe how perfect the Stark theme is. It makes my eyes water every time I hear it. It’s not just that it’s melancholic; in fact, I’d argue that it’s even somewhat heroic. It’s the perfect theme for a family that always fights to do the right thing, even when it costs them everything.
I've always loved Luwin as a character, but it's only now rewatching some of his scenes that I properly appreciate how good the actor is. Fantastic portrayal, and able to express so much in a small nod or a slight inflection. What a great scene and what a great character.
Wasnt expecting to cry over luwin... he was a brilliant maester with a huge heart.
Horrendous. It physically hurts to watch this scene. THE worst death in the entire series so far.
***** the red wedding scene is overrated by the womens....Ned Stark's death was the saddest
I would say this scene, the death of Ser Rodrik, Ned Stark's death and the Red Wedding, in that order, were the saddest scenes in the series. I still cringe every time I think about Theon chopping at Rodrik's head.
Nah oberyns was!
3:08-4:00 most heartbreaking seconds in the history of motion pictures for me. the music kills me.
At the edge of the wolfswood, Bran turned in his basket for one last glimpse of the castle that had been his life. Wisps of smoke still rose into the grey sky, but no more than might have risen from Winterfell's chimneys on a cold autumn afternoon. Soot stains marked some of the arrow loops, and here and there a crack or a missing merlon could be seen in the curtain wall, but it seemed little enough from this distance. Beyond, the tops of the keeps and towers still stood as they had for hundreds of years, and it was hard to tell that the castle had been sacked and burned at all. The stone is strong, Bran told himself, the roots of the trees go deep, and under the ground the Kings of Winter sit their thrones. So long as those remained, Winterfell remained. It was not dead, just broken. Like me, he thought. I'm not dead either.
I loved the way he died. The boys where very much for him, and that he could see them alive was just perfect. He would have died anyway with that wound. I was so happy when he saw the boys alive. (Sorry for my bad English)
still the saddest of all GoT deaths
'No more than I want to leave you...'
Maaaaan. Maester Luwin was loyal until his last breath. Even with everything Theon was doing he still tried to help him find the error of his ways.
Im fine, totally fine im good.......DONT TOUCH ME I AM NOT OKAY RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!
19EHF here comes a brotherly huge.
What's really sad is he probably wasnt beyond saving. If they found bandages and medicine, theres a chance they could have saved him. But he knew that would only slow them down and waste time. He essentially sacrificed his life for the Starks, dying when he didnt absolutely have to just to make sure the boys got out safely.
I don't know about that, in the middle ages (which is when this was based) it was way easier for cuts to become infested, let alone stab wounds.
@@bigassboy9343 not to mention days maybe weeks of exposure
@@mattsterh7740the hound survived with multiple big ass wounds head trauma and a bitten of ear i think maester luwin could survive that

In the show the audience is meant to believe that the ironborn burned Winterfell and not Ramsay as he does in the books. But if you think about it, the ironborn had a deal, that when they give Theon to the northeners, they are free to go. So why would they burn Winterfell? Ramsay also confirmed that he flayed those ironborn raiders from Winterfell, so they most likely accepted Robbs deal. AND: Maester Luwin said Bran and the others have to go, because they could come back. Why would the ironborn come back? But considering Ramsay did this, it makes sense. So the only logical conclusion is that Ramsay burned Winterfell in the show as well as in the book.
+Benedikt Göpel exactly as show watcher i didnt realise what happen there by who until the bolton's treachery revealed in red wedding
I like how the show did it. They made us think Theon's men did this, but still left enough clues so that attentive viewers could pick up on the fact that something didn't add up. Yes, Ramsay burned Winterfell on the show. They just didn't want to tell us before the red wedding.
It was this scene that made me realise Maester Luwin looked like Pope Francis.
Fuck you.

The stark theme made me cry
The music at the end when Osha, Hodor, Bran, Rickon and the wolves all walk away from the ruins of their home always hits me hard.

Loved this dude so much. Especially after having delved into the character more with the books
The actor who played Maester Luwin is amazing.
One of the few truly honorable and kind characters in this show. Was such a sad scene
the best scene in all 8 seasons. with the best music.
At 3:34 was one of those moments for me when it hit how special this show is, and how long I had waited to see something like it. I remember being so captivated by this point in the series... by season 8 it was more or less out of duty to finish the damn thing, unfortunately.
I have to believe the series ended with the final episode of season 7, the wall fell, the dead killed everyone and noone won the throne, showing how pointless it all was in the end.
Using season 8 as the ending is depressing AF, they broke the show entirety, removed anything that was positive and just rushed though entire plotlines in half an episode just to get to that horrendous ending.
Luwin was a real one.
I choke up every time I see this. To me this is the saddest/gratifying scene in the series. Seeing the look on his face to be able to see those boys one last time. The way he tries to make them, mostly Ricorn, think that he won't die.
This show was very well thought of once. The little chuckle Luwin had in his pain, adds so much depth to the character and their relationship dynamics. Even if it was written in the books, the actor did a great job. That's another thing about this show- the cruelly underrated acting of the side characters. Took the show to another dimension.
2:51 Bro i LITERARY CRIED WHILE THE GRANDPA WAS DYING I CANT STOP CRYINVVVVGGGGG EKEKEK
Luwin was cool in every scene he was in, and he died a manly death.
Maesters are supposed to serve the lords of the castles and not the lords themselves but Luwin was a true friend to and had true love for the Starks.
Bran: I don't want to leave you.
Luwin: No more than I want to leave you...
Stannis: Less.
Luwin: What?
Stannis: No LESS than I want to leave you. "No more than I want to leave you" means you want to leave him.
I love these characters, despite how everything ended.
Osha was such a meaningful impactful character. The show did her dirty.
Luwin was one of the only true kind people in Westeros.
2:15 : the sound of all the sadness that befell house stark
He was a grandfather to them all.
Man I miss when Rickon did things, they just kinda forgot about him only to bring him back & kill him off
I can't not tear up watching this scene. Maester Luwin's death was rough, no doubt. The thing that topped it off for me was seeing Winterfell in the backdrop as they're fleeing. I feel like a resident of Winterfell just like anyone else.
The way he says "not you"...
i forgot how much i loved the starks because of season 8. now im reading the books for the first time and rewatching clips. slowly remembering the emotional turmoil each of the stark siblings had to go through. ned and catelyn wld be so proud of each of them
I cried it's just when a old sweet innocent person dies it's so sad 😭
In the book, there's a 12 year old Ironborn sitting above that heart tree, listening to this.
Yeah he tells Wyman Manerly about Bran and Rickon
My heart aches when Rickon ran to Luwin. And his face when he reached for Bran.
The lure sorrow that the actor show d when he thought bran and rickon were burned still lives with me… while it’s also just still crazy tk think bran went through all of this and lost his brother only to lose all of his emotions it’s such a waste man.
Aw man that 'old man seeing his grandkids for what he probably knows will be the last time' look at 1:31. :[
GODS THERE WAS A POND THEN
The last time Luwin spoke to Bran and Rickon reminds me of the last conversation I had with my grandmother.
He told Bran and Rickon he felt fine, but they both knew he was fucked.
I hate this and I am not fine.
It warms the bleak and cold vibe of the show so so well knowing that Luwin knew Bran and Rickon were okay in the end before he died.
it'll be a long time beofre Winterfell and it's massacred people, as well as maester Luwin are avenged :( but the wolves will come again.
Actually Stannis is coming there (season 5)
***** We've seen how that ended...

Osha is one of my favorite character in game of thrones
I feel the same way man, it kills me everytime the best family in the story get duped, its so unfair, I only hope their perseverance through these hard times are rewarded in the end. It would be the biggest injustice if they weren't. They're the only noble family that didnt ask for any of this, That's why I root for them
Man Shaggydog and Summer together! Good times. RIP friends. Shaggydog looks dope tho.
Can no child in Westeros have a happy childhood?
Robin Arryn, the feared lord of the Vale.
Not more than I want to leave you...one of the Saddest comment in the show
Grandfather Luwin. I miss the lad.
I’m so glad that Maester Luwin got to see the Stark boys alive one last time and that he was put out of his suffering quickly by Osha
The stone is strong, Bran told himself, the roots of the trees go deep, and under the ground the Kings of Winter sit their thrones. So long as those remained, Winterfell remained. It was not dead, just broken. Like me, he thought. I’m not dead either.
This makes me so sad! Maester luwin was my favourite :(
Nina Porter he was also like a grandfather to house stark.
the track is called "Winterfell," composed by Ramin Djawadi and included on the GoT Season 2 Original Soundtrack
There is a great mystery here. Maester Luwin was stabbed in the courtyard but managed to dragged himself, mortally injured as he was, to the Weirwood tree of the godswood.
He must have been in great pain and yet he had some powerful motivation to drag himself into the godswood and to die under the Heart Tree.
I think after Bran's visions and the dream that both he and Rickon had pertaining to Lord Eddard's death, he must have finally have become a believer in the magic of the Old Gods and House Stark.
I wonder what is going on his mind while he was dying. Maester Cressen was only on the show for a few minutes before he but in the book he had an entire chapter that made me really sad reading it.
This was so heart wrenching. He loved those boys so much and he just wanted to protect them.
Man, Luwin was such a G.
