Help Me Choose!!! Seymour Duncan Nazgul VS Bare Knuckle Ragnarok

  • What's up guys, and welcome back to a new (and early) video. I need your help to decide what set of pick ups to keep in my Mayones Duvell. Currently it's loaded with a set of Seymour Duncan Sentient/Nazguls, and they are insanely awesome. BUT, in my last review video, I laid tracks with my Chapman ML1 Pro Modern, and that baby is loaded with a set of Bare Knuckle Ragnaroks, a signature set of pick ups designed by Periphery guitarist Misha Mansoor. I couldn't decided from playing the guitars back to back live, so I decided to throw together a quick video demonstrating the sounds of each bridge pick up, both in a mix and by themselves. The reason I am only comparing the bridges is because the determining factor is going to be how well each set can chug. I can dial in any clean tone I want with both sets, so it really comes down the the almighty chug. I hope you guys enjoy this video, this was super fun to make, just to be able to see the difference back to back. Like, share and subscribe, and make sure to drop a comment and make your opinion known. I really want everyone's opinion on this!! As always, thanks for watching!!

SD Nazgul. I could hear what you were playing through the nazgul. The bare knuckles made it harder for my ears to discern the notes you were hitting.

The Nazgul is crisper and has more clarity. And you can't argue with the price differential. I've owned a few Nazguls and although I don't play extreme metal I love them because they are so clear, sensitive to pick attack, and the tone and harmonics are killer.

I disagree and think the opposite. The lower miss of the Rags help make them more defined as many other things are similar. The Nazgûl sounds like it has a blanket over it.

Big fan of these pickups - I own both and have them in various Mayones guitars. In these clips, based on how you have everything EQ’d to your personal preferences, my vote is Nazgul - they sound tighter and angrier. That said, I’m sure you could make changes to the EQ that’d lead me to prefer the Rags.

I don't think I've ever heard two close sounding pickups in my life. The Nazgul sounded slightly tighter and that's that that tone needs because there's too much bass and flub. So Nazgul.

Awesome, the only thing is only one of my L/ R speakers work. Although i still got to hear both, thanks. Respectfully i hear the resonant peaks of the seymour duncans are higher or pulling the whole higher perceptively. The Bareknuckles ragnaroks specifically are flatter, they have an awesome wide midrange chug. i believe it is due to misha's work with bareknuckle on that pickup that gives it it's character voice. i really love the saturated distortion with both, they both consistently convey it, filling empty space nicely. at this cut the rag has a slightly cut bass string response whereas the Nazgul has this really unique clip of bass that flexes while still hearing all of the same details, a really impossible touch by duncan. There has got to be something custom in there like a chunk of wire welded to the rest of a smaller wire or something to make that transient pop out in the lows, Omazing. Both of these pickups are masterpieces. Tech and talent. You can definitely hear the detail texture on the chakka chakka on the palm mutes with the ragnarok. what was found 4:32 and 4:53 forward on isolated rythums. 5:15 the ragnaroks have the definition needed on this riff. i feel the Ragnaroks are more universal or neutral whereas the SD has more of this british invasion warmth. i would use both guitars one for each kind of riff to suit it. Put in a ragnarok bridge and a Nazgul bridge in the bridge and middle positions (rag in middle) and use dual output jacks and two amps.

  • @greggbaker89
    @greggbaker89 4 роки тому +2

It is a really tough decision......they both sound nasty in the mix and your playing is great. I would say the nazguls have a little more clarity on the high end but still have a good chug and are balanced nice. The bare knuckles had a really really nasty sounding chug/slightly more bass/lower end but feel a little short on the highs, but with a nice, Mesa boogie rectifier type heavy bass growl which we all know and love. I would use the bare kuckles, if you like really heavy rythym playing. The nazgul chugged heavy too with a little less growl and bass but some clarity if you also like to solo and add single note articulation/arpeggios/sweeps and want a little more tightness and clarity. In my opinion of my playing style I personally would keep the nazgul because it would give a little more tonal range and options while still providing a medium-nasty chug. PS: that Mayones guitar is sexy AF bro.

I totally get that the Guitars/woods play less of a difference than the pickups/electronics and that swapping out pickups for a sound test wasn’t high on your priorities, but considering YOU wanted to know whether or not to put the Ragnaroks from your Chapman into your Mayones and you’ve got both there … it seems like utter madness that you’d rather record and edit this video for public critique. I know this is old news, but for anyone watching this trying to make their own decision, I think your opinion might change depending on the amp you're using. I'm fortunate enough to own a bunch of different amps and guitars, and certain pickups sound great through some amps and sound terrible through others.
If you own something like a mesa boogie mark series amp you probably want something a little darker because those amps are very tight and bright. Putting a pickup into it that's also bright and tight is too much and you have to redial the amp to match the pickup and I personally could never get it to sound as good afterward.
On the other hand, if you have something like a dual rectifier or 5150, you would benefit from something tight and bright. I've played some guitars through those amps that didn't need a boost because they sounded great without it.
It's unfortunate that most times you have to buy before you try when it comes to pickups like these. Just think about the amp you're using, is it naturally bright or dark? Choose something that complements the amp, and remember that you can adjust the eq to the guitar if you have to. Ideally, these are minor adjustments. If you have to move some of the dials to the extremes you should consider different pickups to suit your needs.

DC is 19K on the Ragnarok and about 16k on the Nazgul. EQ is Low mid emphasis on Rag and High mid on Sent. Two different deliveries as far as gain and eq model so.. I personally did not like either for a Baritone 7 string and went with the Juggernaut BKP. Sent was to flat, almost lifeless and the Rag was ridiculously too much everything but high end, horrible in the mix. Do not usually go with signature models for anything, but on advise from BKP Tim, they are great for DaJent to OS metal. Its been a year so you have most likely have moved on but for any others viewing this in the future... well that's my 2

I often find myself liking how Nazgûl’s sound in videos, but in really life I hate how they sound and feel. Even under high gain I just don’t get a satisfying bite. I even tried them in a KM7 and I was ready to rip them out and put in DActivators haha. I think eq’d slightly differently I would do the BKPs

I think the Ragnarok pickups would punch better in a mix and in a live sitch. You end up carving low end out anyway so why not have a pickup with less work. I do like both tones though and I'd probably use both tonally in a recording and pan them hard left and right. The stereo width on that'd be awesome.

I'm very glad you posted this. I just ordered an ESP with the same Seymour Duncan pickups. This video showed a very clear example of what they will sound like through an interface and using plug-ins. Yes, the tone will be slightly different, but you can definitely hear a very tight definition and consistency across the spectrum. Makes me very excited to own these coils. The BareKnuckles are heavy no doubt, but they have that 12-20kHz air to them that just distracts the garbage out of me. I find the same frequency problem in much cheaper guitars with much cheaper pickups. I would say stick with the Seymour Duncans. Thanks again for making/posting this video.

Awesome duder! The duncan's are great, so were the Bare knuckles. I have since found the best pick ups I've tried, Fishman. That's what I use now in both of my guitars. Other than the fact that you are playing two different guitars... if you were merely going by the sound of each pick up I would say the Nazgul sounds really open and throaty... while the bare Knuckles sound very scooped.

I’m seeing Seymour Duncan for the win but that doesn’t mean the Bareknuckle pick ups are not good. Definitely a cool demo and I love the intro with the disclaimer.

Firstly great video idea and as I've read before and as you stated it's hard to tell because each guitar has subtle nuances. The Nazguls sounded better in the mix for your style where as the Chapman guitar sounded very muddy to my ears. (Here is my overall criticism not to sound harsh or to be a dick ) I did end up hitting the thumbs down on the video, Not swapping each pickup into the guitar you're keeping to me feels like lazy film making and compromises the entire purpose of you making this video. I feel like the entire idea of making a shootout video should be to fairly compare each pickup in a single guitar which did not occur.

Im sure you've already made your decision by now, but I'd go with the Ragnaroks myself. The Nazgul has more clarity and high-mid frequency response for mix-cutting; HOWEVER, the Ragnarok wasn't for off and the frequency focus was just lower than the Nazguls, which (in my humble opinion) managed to sound quite a bit heavier and just over all meaner.
I hope you're happy with which ever choice you made :)

To me the Nazgul slayed Rags, especially on the open chord parts, with Rag I was not able to hear the top strings ringing at all. Came back to listen with new headphones.
Somehow Nazgûl “sound” like that have a higher output, which is insane considering how freakishly high the ragnaroks ACTUALLY are. Lol
Also ragnaroks seem to have more bass, and an overall better chug…I think.
Nazgûl are DEFINITELY brighter, but also messier sounding so ear fatigue is inevitable.
