I miss going out to sea myself. It was a good job. Didn't pay that great when I started back in 1995 as a wiper and a oiler but I worked my way up to 1st engineer over the years. I've never seen sunrise or sunsets like I did on the ocean. It's the only place I seen blood moons too

@@ItsOnlyNiall The largest we’ve had measured was 29 meters. The largest wave that I have ever seen looked like the North Face of the Eiger and smashed our bridge windows. Can’t really say that I have ever been in fear for my life though.
I chose to watch it in sections too! I couldn’t believe less than 3 minutes had gone when I first looked to see how long the video was. I didn’t think I could sit through 23 minutes non stop! It must be very tiring after several hours of negotiating those waves 😳. I was also on the North Sea in November 2011. I was with a friend heading for Shetland where we have relatives and we took the Northlink ferry. (These were in the days when if the ship could handle it, the ferry sailed. Nowadays they’ve changed hands and don’t want to scare passengers away from booking, so rough seas = ferry cancelled.) I remember going out on deck at the stern - surprisingly open for passengers although it was closed further forward - and the ship seemed to go down and down and down and you’d look up and see this massive wave towering above you. Then the ship would rise and the sea was miles below you. The trick is to try not to be caught when the wave breaks 😊. It doesn’t matter how high they are if you just glide over the top. If a wave does break you end up going through it, rather than over. Even that’s OK - getting sideways on to a wave is what you absolutely try to avoid. Saying this, I’ve only sailed very small boats and not in seas like that of course! Until very recently we had a bungalow on the dunes of a Northumberland bay and our boat was made by my late father.

Welcome to the channel. We work 3 x watches of 4 hours on, 8 hours off. The loss of engine power in one of the worst possible scenarios for a ship at any time and no more so than in these conditions. Ahhhhhh hell no, I can feel my heart turn into something along the lines of gravy & pour slowly down into the pit of my stomach, bowels, toes & settle in the bottoms of my feet, just watching the day time version of "the ocean is just a watery hell & it wants ur soul & ur screams". Then I see the night time version.... forget the small broom closet down on the lower deck & the hysterical screams & annoying crying & the random uncontrollable fits of laughter, I'm gonna have to be dealt with in a more humane, direct method, like a large sized can of beans to the back of the head.... watery hell waves at night are on a completely different horrifying level !!! I've never seen footage like this taken at night, I thought the damn waves slept at night lol, that's just to...so... I can't even think of any good ways to put it. How can u guy's not scream like little girl's every time the sun starts to set, knowing the pitch blackness & watery hell waves in monster format is all u have to look forward to for hours ?? U guy's are definitely a rare & impressive breed.... Absolutely Awesome breed.... little badasses, battling the watery hell wave's & saving lives & assisting those with bad luck. 😁 These are the best horror film's I've seen lol, they are the best & biggest waves on film. Thanks for that. We are an ERRV ((Emergency Response and Rescue Vessel) looking after the oil platforms of the North Sea. We are at sea for a month at a time and never come in for bad weather.

We have metal bars that can be slid across the stove and screwed into place to wedge the pots and pans in place. When we eating we have to hold onto our plates and tilt them against the roll of the ship :/

How do you know it's still as stable after everything the ship has been through? And what kind of ship is it, is it a model that can handle seas safer than normal designs? Do you have to face every wave head on? Not even Silence of the Lambs etc, comes anywhere near this scary. And I imagine the weather is so cold you'd freeze to death almost instantly without special suits?
We have hourly checks around the ship to make sure everything is still watertight & secure. We are an ERRV (Emergency Response and Rescue Vessel) which is designed for the job and spend out time looking after 2 oil platforms. I like this.collection of videos, Bigwave. What would be neat is an inset lf windspeed, like a heads-up display. The closer you can get the cameras. to the deck the better. Looking up at the waves from that on-deck position would be impressive and quite revealing as to just how much wave height can rattle you. There was one shot taken that looks up at a good sized swell that was just superb! Thanks for taking the time to put this together, ate!!

I know what this is like as I was in a Pacific typhoon, in 40-50' seas for 4 days, on a 500 ship; I didn't like. Why were you all out in this? Were you not able to get back to port in time?

I’m a cook at a 30 tons private old wooden yacht. One get physically tired by dancing around in rough weather, and cooking ain’t easy. But needed for those keeping us head on to the waves.
I am editing a video at the moment that features our cook in heavy weather. We try to keep head to the largest seas as much as possible but we have an awful time with cross-swells in this part of the world.

She was painted inboard by the crew every year and dry docked every couple of years. There are relief ships that take over when an ERRV has to go in for any reason.

Waves never look as big on film as they do in real life. The largest wave I’ve experienced was somewhere in the region of 30 meters (measured by an oil platform in the area). It smashed 2 bridge windows.

The company I work for has many people on it's books with many years experience in this type of work. A couple of years ago there was a downturn in the oil industry leading to redundancies. These people are now waiting to start work again. Also there are many qualifications that a crew seaman must have before he can even think about applying for a job with us.
Bigwavemaster1 I sure there is,here in the states it is the merchant marine Academy,or if you go for a job and do get hired with no training you will be lucky to leave the shop,dock or vessels in the shipyard not unless you are a shining star with true talent and catch someone especially eye.

I came off watch one night during a huricane and stepped off the ladder to find out the cook forgot to secure the deep fryer. I slid back to to officers cabins which was about 60 feet. What a mess.

I miss going out to sea myself. It was a good job. Didn't pay that great when I started back in 1995 as a wiper and a oiler but I worked my way up to 1st engineer over the years. I've never seen sunrise or sunsets like I did on the ocean. It's the only place I seen blood moons too

I chose to watch it in sections too! I couldn’t believe less than 3 minutes had gone when I first looked to see how long the video was. I didn’t think I could sit through 23 minutes non stop!
It must be very tiring after several hours of negotiating those waves 😳. I was also on the North Sea in November 2011. I was with a friend heading for Shetland where we have relatives and we took the Northlink ferry. (These were in the days when if the ship could handle it, the ferry sailed. Nowadays they’ve changed hands and don’t want to scare passengers away from booking, so rough seas = ferry cancelled.) I remember going out on deck at the stern - surprisingly open for passengers although it was closed further forward - and the ship seemed to go down and down and down and you’d look up and see this massive wave towering above you. Then the ship would rise and the sea was miles below you.
The trick is to try not to be caught when the wave breaks 😊. It doesn’t matter how high they are if you just glide over the top. If a wave does break you end up going through it, rather than over. Even that’s OK - getting sideways on to a wave is what you absolutely try to avoid. Saying this, I’ve only sailed very small boats and not in seas like that of course! Until very recently we had a bungalow on the dunes of a Northumberland bay and our boat was made by my late father.
I’ve been on that ferry many times as we sometimes dock in Lerwick. You can see that on some of my Month at Sea on an ERRV videos.
Also spent a bit of time on the Northumberland coast. My family are originally from Newcastle and, as a child, we would spend our holidays there and in a cottage near Kielder.

We always try to meet the waves head on. We wouldn’t capsize but we could do a lot of damage to both the ship and crew otherwise.

Welcome to the channel.
We work 3 x watches of 4 hours on, 8 hours off.
The loss of engine power in one of the worst possible scenarios for a ship at any time and no more so than in these conditions. If we were to stop the engine we would go side on to these waves and possibly capsize.

Ahhhhhh hell no, I can feel my heart turn into something along the lines of gravy & pour slowly down into the pit of my stomach, bowels, toes & settle in the bottoms of my feet, just watching the day time version of "the ocean is just a watery hell & it wants ur soul & ur screams". Then I see the night time version.... forget the small broom closet down on the lower deck & the hysterical screams & annoying crying & the random uncontrollable fits of laughter, I'm gonna have to be dealt with in a more humane, direct method, like a large sized can of beans to the back of the head.... watery hell waves at night are on a completely different horrifying level !!!
I've never seen footage like this taken at night, I thought the damn waves slept at night lol, that's just to...so... I can't even think of any good ways to put it. How can u guy's not scream like little girl's every time the sun starts to set, knowing the pitch blackness & watery hell waves in monster format is all u have to look forward to for hours ??

Loved seeing the guys in the galley too. Are the pots n pans magnetic so they don't slide off the stove? You all have amazing balance and must have nerves of steel! Very impressive! (The crew AND the waves)
We have metal bars that can be slid across the stove and screwed into place to wedge the pots and pans in place.
When we eating we have to hold onto our plates and tilt them against the roll of the ship :/

How do you know it's still as stable after everything the ship has been through? And what kind of ship is it, is it a model that can handle seas safer than normal designs? Do you have to face every wave head on? Not even Silence of the Lambs etc, comes anywhere near this scary. And I imagine the weather is so cold you'd freeze to death almost instantly without special suits?
We have hourly checks around the ship to make sure everything is still watertight & secure.
We are an ERRV (Emergency Response and Rescue Vessel) which is designed for the job and spend out time looking after 2 oil platforms.

I like this.collection of videos, Bigwave. What would be neat is an inset lf windspeed, like a heads-up display. The closer you can get the cameras. to the deck the better. Looking up at the waves from that on-deck position would be impressive and quite revealing as to just how much wave height can rattle you. There was one shot taken that looks up at a good sized swell that was just superb! Thanks for taking the time to put this together, ate!!
On this occasion our anemometer had blown away and so had the oil platforms. You hear someone say “Did you ask for the wind speed, Graeme?” I reply “No, they asked me”..

I know what this is like as I was in a Pacific typhoon, in 40-50' seas for 4 days, on a 500 ship; I didn't like. Why were you all out in this? Were you not able to get back to port in time?
Once experienced, never forgotten.
We are an ERRV (Emergency Response and Rescue Vessel). We look after the oil platforms in the North Sea. We have to stay out for a month at a time regardless of the weather.

I’m a cook at a 30 tons private old wooden yacht. One get physically tired by dancing around in rough weather, and cooking ain’t easy. But needed for those keeping us head on to the waves.
I am editing a video at the moment that features our cook in heavy weather. We try to keep head to the largest seas as much as possible but we have an awful time with cross-swells in this part of the world.
Bigwavemaster1 we have in the galley a steel Poole, like a stripper Poole. Very sufficient to have one arm around and one fra for the pots in rough sea 😇. Look forward to your new video with your cook 👍.

Indeed. Our NorCal apt bldg has comparable design features enabling it to withstand earthquakes, & altho I appreciate (w/fingers crossed) that built-in flexibility, heaving floors & crunching walls will never cease to terrify!

How often does she go in for painting? How long does that take? What takes her place in the meantime?
She was painted inboard by the crew every year and dry docked every couple of years.
There are relief ships that take over when an ERRV has to go in for any reason.

I ask. What are those circular devices you see up against the glass at the 50 second mark? I would think something to either clear ice or defrost the glass. Most of the fishing vessels on Deadliest Catch have them on their forward facing windows also.
That’s a Rotator. It contains galas which rotates at several RPM dispelling rain or snow by centrifugal force.

Whats the go with engine controls when pitching like that? Do you have to worry about the screws coming out of the water and beginning to spin up?
If the props were ever to come out of the water, the overspend would cut the engines. But this never happened.

That's correct. Our primary function was rescue but we also had fire fighting capabilities.

Waves never look as big on film as they do in real life. The largest wave I’ve experienced was somewhere in the region of 30 meters (measured by an oil platform in the area). It smashed 2 bridge windows.

The company I work for has many people on it's books with many years experience in this type of work. A couple of years ago there was a downturn in the oil industry leading to redundancies. These people are now waiting to start work again.
Also there are many qualifications that a crew seaman must have before he can even think about applying for a job with us.
Bigwavemaster1 I sure there is,here in the states it is the merchant marine Academy,or if you go for a job and do get hired with no training you will be lucky to leave the shop,dock or vessels in the shipyard not unless you are a shining star with true talent and catch someone especially eye.
it's illegal in the UK to go to sea without the basic qualifications of Sea Survival and Fire Fighting.

I came off watch one night during a huricane and stepped off the ladder to find out the cook forgot to secure the deep fryer. I slid back to to officers cabins which was about 60 feet. What a mess.

I love rough seas but not for 2 weeks straight.
It’s the longest period I have experienced. We were hit my 3 hurricanes, one after the other with winds reaching over 100 knots.
