1982 Star Wars Wampa Restoration & Whitening - Vintage Toy Retrobrighting, Kenner Figure Repair

- The second Star Wars retrobrighting project and a very popular question: Can a wampa be made white once again? The answer is yes! And without any risk to the toy. In this video, I show two techniques I use for retrobrighting Star Wars and other vintage toy figures. The first uses cream peroxide and the second liquid hydrogen peroxide. Both achieve the same result (although, in my experience, cream peroxide is faster and way cheaper). The yellowing happens to most Wampas and other white action figures and toys because of a process called bromide ageing. Bromide is a fire-retardant substance that gets added to the plastic mix. In time and due to changes in temperature and exposition to sunlight and heat, bromide yellows. This process can be reverted with UV light and peroxide, however, it's worth noting that the whitening is NOT permanent. You will need to repeat the process some years in the future.
Note 1: Hydrogen peroxide can affect the paint, so be careful if you're using a different figure (GI Joes, for example).
Note 2: Cream peroxide can leave streaking if used on flat surfaces such as computer cases.

It's funny, that every wampa ist getting yellow but never the legs.
Another kind of plastic?
Great cleaning and good result 👍
Greetings from Germany
Thomas
Yes, all the yellowed wampas I saw have this same issue. The plastic of the torso feels a little more robust, I think maybe it was made with a different mix so it could tolerate the "forces" of people pulling the arms. Vielen Dank, Thomas :)
The wampa looks like a kitty to me.
He does look cute :D
They didn’t want to scare kids with a realistic looking monster. Yet they made the rancor.
The difference is amazing!! And I like that you explained the alternative bag method!
Thank you!!
This is amazing, it's like a totally different toy! Your restorations are an inspiration to what can be achieved 😊
Thank you so much! 😊
This is nearly exactly the process I use except I paint the figures with the cream, and put them in glass jars and then put them in the UV box. I think you are onto something about that affecting the process but I’m not sure if it’s the gasses that are created or the passing of the UV through the glass or clear plastic. I see some videos where people soak the plastic in clear peroxide tubs while blasting with UV floodlights and the original idea of soaking in jars of peroxide in the sun also incorporates the light > glass > peroxide combo. I’m not sure how long the process lasts for. It’s definitely not permanent but when you can de-yellow In a couple hours it almost doesn’t matter. Figures that are only slightly yellowed only take an hour or so in the box.
I remember reading at some point that the UV light produced peroxide "fumes", and those were helping the process. I notice better results when a) The container is sealed, and b) The temperature is higher. Actually, sealing tends to raise the temperature... so that would work better! My smaller cardboard UV box has the same "power" but being smaller, it works faster than the plastic one. The heat dissipates slower in the cardboard one. I agree that when the deyellowing takes so little effort it's not an issue if you have to repeat it over a few years. But I haven't noticed this when keeping the figures inside a UV-protected display case. There's still a lot to discover in the world of retrobrighting, I'm quite excited about the possibilities! Good luck with your projects and thank you so much for watching the video :)
I know this is an older video and you might already know this, but if you use cream peroxide and wrap it in Saran Wrap it won’t dry out as quickly in the UV box! :D (Love your videos)
Thanks for the tip! I have seen other people do this and I think it definitely works better for age spots. I personally don't mind changing the cream frequently because I keep the box next to the sink and that way I save on single-use plastic... but I should try this method too, see how effective it is in comparison. Maybe there is also a way to reuse the wrap, that would be ideal!
I had this guy back in the day...I miss my old star wars figures.
He's quite cool. You can get a lot of these figures on eBay, they are not too expensive. I hope you can get back some of the ones you liked ☺️
Great soundtrack!
I just found your channel and watched every single video i love it
Wow, thank you!! :) :)
Increible como aparecio el color original, tan diferente!
Gracias! Si, la diferencia, aún no siendo pefecto blanco, es notable :)
thank you for confirming that cream peroxide can be used.
The OCD part of me cant get the upper to match the leg color :(
I know!! :0 The video only shows the process but I repeated the hydrogen peroxide bag some 6 times and... never managed to get it whiter. I considered bleach but felt it would be cheating xD
Fun video! Great work! 😊
Nice fix well done.
Thank you 😊😊
If you sink it in 7% h2o2 with a 430-440nm UV light overhead and let it sit. It should be completely white.
Any idea why the hydrogen peroxide didn't affect the brown paint on the horns and hands?
The peroxide doesn't usually impact paint or change the colour of plastic if it's coloured. It only "brings up" the original one, if that makes sense? Mostly by dealing with the yellowing.
@@RetroGeekCraftsthank you for your response!!!
Top vid 👌🏼 🙂
Can you de/yellow the imperial shuttle ? I have the large version 1984😊
Bravo!
Thank you! :)
I have a 30th anniversary ep 3 obi wan's starfighter that has turned yellow in the top, I'm a bit scared to try anything since it has a lot of blue and some different colors, would you recomend any of this tecniques?
Would it work if you use the hot sun instead?
It would! You'll just need to leave it out for longer (and it needs to be a strong summery-sun, it doesn't really work too well here in the UK :))
If I use the cream, do I still have to put the pieces in plastic bags or wrap them in plastic?
I think trying 12% hydrogen dioxide could work better with uv light and yellowed plastic, you could try it next time :)
I hadn't heard of dioxide! Why do you think it would work better? Very curious!
@@RetroGeekCrafts sorry for late response, I just saw some of videos like this one ua-cam.com/video/jdWRsjnVD3s/v-deo.html
And thought I'll recommend using hydrogen dioxide because looks like it works perfectly with yellowed hard plastic :) it's just a suggestion tho
Will it take care of small mold spots? Also my He-Man figures feel sticky a bit.
Have you tried adding a little bleach to the mixture?? I add peroxide and bleach together to clean tile/white shower! You have to be alert to the noxious gas it emits, but if done outside should help results!! Although, you may have to repaint some areas afterwards!!!
I haven't tried bleach with any toys yet! I think it could work well. I'll give it a go! Thank you 😊
Add a capful of bleach to your peroxide and allow to sit for an hour or two in sun or ultraviolet light!! I’m not sure if bleach will destroy plastic itself, so be careful!! If it works better we may have found best way to restore toys amigo!! I might would rinse very well and rub a small covering of petroleum jelly afterwards!!??
How come the legs stayed so white compared To the upper body and arms?
do peroxide works on yellowish white cloth? i have some dakimakura/ japanese anime pillow yellowish
Can you do it to a yak face ?
Es un gatito con cuernos ♡
Jejeje si... uno bastante feroz!
To be honest, it would look kinda cool if it was a light yellow
Yeah, polar bears are rarely bleach-white! Dirty wampa :P
