    This is a great informational video. I see this misconception that "wrestling/nibbling =aggression" a lot with novice pigeon keepers. Pigeons are prey animals, they will always try to flee if they feel threatened and they don't hate you if they tousle with your hand. Thank you for sharing this!

      as someone who got wingslapped on my head numerous times I can confirm this. I see enough pigeons with aggressive behaviour that is basically RUH'ing at me (guttural, not like this in the video) and flying away when I come to close. And that aggressive behaviour is actually only a defense mechanism to warn you not to come to close. And that's just the behaviour towards other species that might be able to harm them.

      I feel like this is the case with a lot of animals - TONS of animals have "play biting", like, probably more than not realistically..
      Cats, dogs, heck I think even rats do this sort of thing. Animals do *NOT* have hands, so mouths are just like.. yeah.

      @@maxwell_edison It's true. My cat would often nibble my hand and I used to get real pissed at her and rip my hand away, which she'd hiss about, and bop her on the head. I kept wondering why SHE was mad at ME. Well, turns out that's just little affectionate nips, after research.
      So now I basically ignore it as best I can and let her do it if she wants to.

    My old man JonJon was the sweetest, most humble and gentle boy out there. He never did driving behaviour, never pecked, just coohed at me for attention or to come to bed. He was a rescued feral with club foot and internal parasites. He was also a bit senile. My partner and I decided to keep him as he wouldn't have lived long on the streets, he was sitting under a table by himself as it started to rain. He must have been a fairly dominant pidge in his day because he was huge with big crusty ceres. For some reason wood pigeons have chosen a telephone line outside my window as a place to mate, so I get to see their entire procedure regularly. They are surprisingly affectionate they chase each other up and down 'kissing' and nuzzling. When it comes down to business they are very quick, there is lots of flapping then he usually flies off immediately and leaves the female looking disappointed. It does not help the line is too wobbly they should use a more stable tree branch.

    I love pigeons. A lot of people give them a bad rap because they think they’re super dirty and unhygienic (which isn’t really the case). As a kid I remember going to the town pavilion on multiple occasions with my cousin, where she’d buy some bird seed and tell me to throw it in the air. About 75-100 pigeons came flocking down. She told me to hold some seed in my hands and one flew up and started eating it, where she would come up behind it, grab it, then let me pet and hold them

    it really just comes down to reading their body language, like the twitchy wing for example is one common thing people mistake because it can mean 1 of 2 things 1) its scared of you or 2) its just happy, and its a happy wing twitch, pretty easy to tell if its a happy wing twitch cause theyll do there little dance that yours does, starting nesting behavior after the bird knows youre impressed

    • @nightcoreeclub
      @nightcoreeclub 21 день тому +1

      a lot of animal behaviors depend on context too. for example a dog wagging its tail could indicate anxiety or happiness/excitement lol afaik

    • @nightcoreeclub
      @nightcoreeclub 21 день тому

      the totality of expression/body language/speech&sound/situational context can tell you more dependably what the animal is feeling. makes sense that if a bird is nibbling at you and dancing around without harming you that it is probably playing or something. one of my dogs “bites” my forearms or hands very very gently when he gets super excited. if he ever chomps too much then i just pretend to whimper or cry and he immediately stops and tries to kiss me 😂😂❤❤ i love animals.

    Pigeons are very affectionate birds. They have very subtle body languages. They dance and sing for their mate a lot, putting a lot of work into their relationship also into raising the chicks. Their beaks aren't there for strength. Pigeon beak is nowhere as strong as any finches or parrots who were evolved to Crack seeds. They have thin gentle beaks. And their bite is barely any pressure 🙂

    I am taking a wild guess here. But if a pigeon (or any animal) is truly being agressive, it'll stand their ground. Or even go on the offensive to make it clear you're not welcome. Unlike this pigeon which is clearly pacing back and forth.

    I have one that doesn’t do any courtship behavior. He just bites. He’s got an owl beak so it can hurt. It started when he was the only bird that I keep inside. He was very affectionate. Then I brought 2 squeakers inside and he became very protective of them. So I put him in the loft with the other birds and kept one of the squeakers as my house bird.

    I haven't seen the biting [among urban pidgeons (not pets)] before. But those pidgeon sounds plus the little twirl he makes is very common mating/nesting behaviour to see, especially in spring. Most of the time, i've seen one or more males that were feeding near a female get very alert and do those twirls while following her everywhere. The female pidgeon usually got tired of the harrassement and flew away, while the male either followed her or stood confused for a moment before proceeding to keep eating crumbs.

    This can apply to multiple taxonomic families of birds which now reside with humans as "pets," actually. 👍
    An example?
    Male (pet) ducks also do this, it's a way to get your attention.
    It really is about undivided attention. ❤

    _"you're literally a giant, so he has to try very hard to impress you."_
    **You wake up happy and excited, today is the big day you are going to ask your neighbor Cindy out. You attach your 3d maneuver gear to your suit, picking up your 45 lbs bouquet of genetically modified giant flowers, kicking open your front door to reveal a 4 meter long foot print in your front yard that is heading West-- its Cindy's, and it appears she accidentally sheared your vehicle in half with that footstep, clumsy girl, no matter... Time to track her down and tell her how you really feel! You start playing Dark Souls boss music in your earbuds as you run in the direction of the rumbling footfalls and destruction, ready to confess your feelings for her.**

    When they start twitching their wings that way 0:31 that's a signal that they get very lovely and cozy with you, see how he starts to close his eyes and bow his head down. Like she says, the initial strut and turning around is to get your attention.

    Lol cute, my cat does something similar-ish. She'll "attack and bite" people's legs (and this morning startled my poor chihuahua into yelping by nipping his belly) but it's affection and not play or attack. The difference is the gentleness - just barely enough pressure to know she put teeth on you, but not enough to even indent the skin. Startling, tho, TBH. Poor pup was just laying there on his back and she was like NIPNIP BISH.
    :'D I had no idea pidgeons did this
