Sorry your sick & down & out! Love the place, life style & the videos! Maybe through in some island video's & local culture once in awhile, maybe some local attractions & maybe some not so common attractions, shopping experiences, what the natives are like, beach videos, wild life idk. Lol. 😉👍 just keep doing what you do!
Thank you for watching! Great suggestions, we're trying to make more videos but you know, life and mother nature tends to get in the way.. or at least give us a good excuse to not make consistent videos.. 🤔 This video is from several months ago and we're both healthy now :) thank u
Michael your better half needs some of that TLC you're spreading all over the farm, don't forget about her :). Take care Paulina, hope you're mo betta now!
+Michael Ross michael has been taking really good care of me. Still trying to recover here from a second bout of symptoms but I'm staying optimistic. 💚
I just read about dengue fever. I hope you get well soon Paulina. Mosquitoes are bad here in Louisiana. I use mosquito repellent to discourage bites. I also use permethrin on my clothing that I wear in the garden. Of course these materials help prevent illnesses from mosquitoes, but I use them because I hate the annoying buzzing around my head and the itchy bites. The garden is looking good after all the hard work. How about a video of the places you go to buy food, such as a farmer's market? Take care.
+joe pacholik thanks Joe! Paulina is better now 💛 Mosquitoes are the worst... The only living thing I don't feel bad about slapping. We are trying to find ways to manage them with herbs and citronella spray and candles. And we have guppies now in our water buckets that are supposed to eat the larvae. That's a good suggestion, others seem to be interested in our food consumption too!
+Katherine Russell that's very sweet to read! I am feeling much better right now, I think it's normal to get a little beat up once getting to the island as a way of being initiated :) Michael is really happy I'm back to normal now
Paulina I hope you are feeling better . Dengue Fever sucks! I would like to see a day in your life and what you are eating . I love seeing what plants , trees and fruit and eatables you are growing. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺
We would like to come to your farm and meet you guys. We have been watcing your channel for about 6 months on the mainland. You guys are so inspiring. My girlfriend and I are now on the Big Island in HPP and want to visit you guys whenever you are free. Maybe get some growing tips or just buy some produce.
just bought a property in the big island me and my gf are excited to do a container home and start planting in our near future. :) thank you guys your videos are very motivationals
When you are both healthy and if you are planting any new trees id like to see the ground preparation, like how deep into the rock you dig before building up the spot with soil and mulch.
+freefarmland we have one video where we showed how we planted an avocado tree ("How to plant a fruit tree") and the tree is doing really well now! I think in the future we might mound up the trees even more though
+freefarmland our land has been "ripped" meaning the lava rock has been broken up underneath about 2-3ft. This is why it is not as important for us to mound up as much, but it is still a good idea to do. If the land has not been ripped you should mound up about 1-2ft and 4-6ft wide. Wide is more important then deep though. As the tree grows just keep building the mound wider with mulch.
+Amanda Puakea Griechen Yeah we heard of that! Luckily the virus has passed and Paulina is better now. But it's good to know for next time (hopefully not!)
Those yellow plants may be magnesium deficient. Big problem in Puna with the acidic conditions and nutrient leaching from heavy rain and rapid drainage. We use Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom salts) for rapid uptake in the short term and dolomite powder for long term improvement. The effect on the coffee, dragon fruit, ginger, and bananas here in Fern Forest has been pretty profound. :-) I want so badly to try rollinia - and to grow it, too. Where did you get your starts? I hope Paulina is feeling much better. Aloha!
+Big Island Lava Pioneers interesting, thank you. We heard that magnesium is one of the minerals that doesn't Leach easily from the soil once it's added. So we've added dolomite lime to every tree when we planted them and once more a year after. It could be not enough magnesium though... A good way to know for sure is soil testing. Go get some Rollinia at the farmers market! Pretty much every market has them right now, especially Hilo. Save the plump seeds and start them in pots. They grow true to seed and pretty fast too! I (Paulina) am more functional now but still in a lot of pain. It's some mystery illness and it's taking a long time to overcome. Thanks for your concern :) Alohaa
It's awful to be miserable in paradise. Glad you're functioning, but hope that pain goes away fast so you can enjoy life to the fullest. Next time I hit Maku'u, I'll check for rollinia starts. I almost bought a fruit from a gal at Uncle Robert's. I really regret not doing that.
I'm liking the farming videos and how you sprinkle in some permaculture tips. More of those would be cool :). Also if you go to the ocean or some other beautiful places in hawaii can you film it? Hope Paulina feels better soon.
+Melissa Diep Thanks for the feedback :) we are hoping to get out on some nature excursions around here and make a video. There's still too much work to do so maybe that is going to have to wait but definitely ! Paulina is healthy now 🤙
+Hawaiian Cat With a map thanks! We don't really want to make more recipe videos but maybe... Our 'offgrid diet' really consists of eating whole fruits and having a big one pot meal at night with some grain or starch and veggies from the land/farmers market :)
+Hawaiian Cat With a map oh also we have some vegan friends with really awesome vegan recipe videos! Not off grid though haha. They're 'govegangytis' and 'meganelizabeth' or 'easytoberaw'on UA-cam.
OffGridHawaii , Great to know Paulina is feeling better. I only discovered you guys yesterday and I am binge watching to learn more, as I am planing to move on to my own, land, grow my own food and possibly live in a container home or something similar in a few months. Thank you so much for making these videos, you have a fan in Ghana. If any video ideas come up, I will let you guys know for sure. Stay well, happy and real.
some video ideas for the future........get a cheap drone and fly it over your property and surrounding properties, or, if possible, climb a really tall tree and see if you're able to look around. Maybe spy on your neighbors :) jk, make a fire pit! Not sure if you already made a video on this......but Do a video on the cost of properties when you were looking (any cheap 1-5 acres?) and any hidden costs that people might not be aware of, ie. property taxes, etc. If possible, just bullet point all the costs. How much does it cost to ship a shipping container to your land. Did you need to rent any heavy equipment to cut a driveway to your property, or did michael just take an extra dose of steroids in the morning? Also, talk about building codes (if there are any). Some states make you put in a sewage system and you have to build a house within 3-4 years. You don't need to give away your location or say specific cities, but approximately how far are you away from a town, from a bigger city? What are the downfalls of off grid so far? Sounds like you guys are financially stable, however, do you know of friends who found part time jobs easily? Just some ideas for the future
+RAW FOOD PHILOSOPHY Michael's got a drone already for aerial views of the land and all around, but after one test flight it felt kind of invasive because you could see the neighbors and all their shenanigans haha. So maybe we'll save the drone shots for lanscape views or something. Yeah costs seems to be a popular video request and I think we're gonna be making a video on that soon. Your other ideas are great too, thanks! It's be cool to get the legit lodown on building codes because that's a popular question even for people who have been living here longer lol. So far the rule is, as long as your neighbors are ok with it then you can build whatever you want. But it'd definitely be beneficial to know exactly what the laws are. We're not quite in that phase of building yet so we just haven't bothered to look too much into it. 🤙
Ya, it'd be kinda creepy if you were in your upper 2 story house and a drone was hovering right by your window looking in. But, on the other hand, it'd be fun for your viewers to see how freaky your neighbors are! cool, thanks for the reply. Maybe have someone else go down to the government agency to ask all the questions because if they get your address then they might come out to your property and investigate, or put you on a watch list. I know in Arizona you have to have a house built with septic within 3-4 years, however, hawaii may be different. I wonder what they'd do if you just kept living on the land without building a house, throw you in jail? i don't think so. I guess you could just sell the land...if they started putting pressure on you.
Hey! loving the videos. Have you learned/posted anything more about the building codes since this? I saw you said somewhere since its AG land having a container is ok. Is that because it is less than a certain sqft or because it isnt permanent?
Hi guys. We were wondering if a permit is required for the using a container as a home? Also, my wife and I would like to enlist your help in locating a decent parcel of land there in the rain forest. We looking to obtain anywhere from 3-5 acres. I'll be working on Oahu for about four years a beginning in Nov. so we'd like to prepare the property during that time. If your not able or not on the island in June maybe you could pass along some advice. Thanks and we've enjoyed your videos, Pauline, ur too funny... see ya Paul & Wan from Thailand
Hi Paul, you can send us an email at aloha.offgridhawaii@gmail.com and we can talk about it :) And the permit question, it depends. But you don't need a permit to have a container on AG land.
+Michael Carroll money was definitely a huge factor. The best places to farm on big island are along hamakua coast and the acreage there is way more expensive than Puna. The soil there is over 20ft deep and there's solid amount of rain. But you could really farm anywhere as long as you're not super high in elevation and know what kind of inputs you need to bring to make it a suitable environment for growing food.
+Michael Carroll Captain Cook is beautiful, but more dry. Mountain view is much wetter but elevation is higher (can still grow tho). Idk much about Maui or Kauai
Pigeon peas are very nutritious and delicious too, they are a staple protein crop in most of the Caribbean. Aside from fixing N, they also have beautiful yellow flowers that attract lots of pollinators, as well as birds like parrots, that feast on the peas.
You probably already did a vid. on this. But how about a vid. on how you get your water, electricity, how much your house coast, how much land you have, What's your 2 week/2 mounth/2 year plan on your place. When you are close by would love to see Hawaii water again. And maybe a trip to your super market. Do you guys buy flower, sugar, butter, things like that. Updates are cool and those small little things you need to fix change or up grade. You know those things that make life "interesting 😐" Love your guys vids. and personalities 😋😍😄. Its Good night for me✌
+P. VK. Thanks so much for all the video suggestions. Costs seems to be the biggest question on everyone's minds, and we will *very likely* be addressing that soon. :) Mahalo for watching our vids, and I hope you find them inspiring, informative or at least they bring a smile to your face. 🤙😄
Innoculate your felled material with mushrooms to jump start your soil microbial biota. I am pointing the finger at the Wine Cap mushroom. Paulina should avail herself of Vitamin D3 supplements while her immune system is under attack.
+esteban corral sounds good! We'll look into that. Paulina immune system was really beat from traveling and very little sleep the two weeks prior. She started taking this immune boosting mushroom spray and it seemed to help kick it back up
Would lemon balm grow there??? It’s a natural mosquito repellent plant..... or buy a set of clothes that have permethrin infused into them..... feel better soon!!!
+sarahrose0413 we haven't tried lemon balm but we have a LOT of lemon grass. It's supposed to be a repellant too but it doesn't seem to be working enough 😕 When we first got on the land there were tons of Mosquitoes and we didn't realize we had to be careful especially when the immune system is already down
I've never seen a more adorable guy..
Watch all the videos, especially the ending of the zipline one 😄

Michael, thanks for tour of your (and Paulina's) beautiful gardens. Everything is flourishing
and looks so healthy. :)

Hi! My husband and I are just starting out on the BI. Our place looks just like yours! I understand what you mean about it being overwhelming!
Yep :) this island is ruled by lava, jungle, rain and mosquitos

Get well all of you.
It always looks so humid there.! Imagine guys freezing wet UK, rain and grey skies for 6 months. However slightest sun and Brits go slightly mad.

Yes we do 😄
Hi. How many acre of land do you guys own?
+Mike Vo Aloha! It's 3 acres
Wondering if money was not an issue where you think the optimal location in hawaii (climate, elevation) would be for growing a food forest.
Currently looking at relocating to Captain Cook, Mountain View area, upcounrty maui or Kauai to grow a food forest :o

i'm guessing the pigeon pea is a nitrogen fixer? are they there solely for fertilising the other plants? p.s. nice rack
+ricky lahey pigeon peas are amazing plants. They are nitrogen fixers, good mulch plant, and their edible peas are delicious
awesome, will check them out for my region

Not all the videos have music. We like adding music to most of them, especially vlogs. Our next video won't have music though, you're in luck :)
