    I have 6 fractures on my spine that are healing now from being in the hospital and also while I was there they diagnosed scoliosis so I have backaches all the time, I would love to make this so I will need the herbs since I can't grow them and this is really a great healthy recipe. I don't take any medications I took myself off all Medications about a year ago. Thank You so much for sharing your Relaxer extract and have a beautiful Friday!

      @spitfire red - if your scoliosis causes you backaches, I have had this problem for around 30 years - until my sweet hubby suggested putting pure magnesium oil on it! We get the pure stuff that has nothing else in it, and just spray it on at night before bed. Generally once a day is all I need it. It is kind of "gritty" feeling once dry, and if that bothers you, you can wait 20 minutes after applying it, then rinse it off. Hope this helps, it's been a God send for me!

    Valerian is awesome! California Poppy can be a great help for calming, pain, and sleep help.I also use Passionflower. Mine does not fruit, I live in the NW where is doesn't fruit, but since the leaves are what you collect and use for medicine, I grow it for the flower and leaves. Another herb that works is Skullcap. It seems to grow abundantly in my NW garden. It's in the mint family. It's a nervine. It helps calm the nerve endings close to the top of your skin that seem to be triggered by painful muscles and connective tissue. It's good for people with fibromyalgia, and it helps calm your mind and click it off to sleep. It's a great blender and support in herb blends.
    Herbs are so fun! I love to play with blends and using them in different forms as well as grow them.
    Thanks for all your work in giving info to people seeking ways to heal and showing effective choices.
    Blessings!

Things that usually are done now and I can plant fall veggies are still producing and now I don't have the room for the fall veggies. I think I will plant up in holding pots for a couple of weeks, them hopefully the garden will be ready for them. Hope poppies will be a success for you next year!

    I'm so excited to grow these/and order these herbs. Totally on board with shoulder relaxation. I drove a school bus for 20 years, then was a freelance writer after that, both jobs took a toll on my shoulder/neck area. Big headaches were common, and prescription muscle relaxers (the 2 or 4 mg low dose), were sometimes the only thing I could resort to. When shoulder tension was really bad, I would go outside to walk it off, and realized that I had the 'Uncle Fester', shoulders up to my ears posture! ICK!
    The marshmallow I ordered is up in the greenhouse.
    I'm so lucky to have the luxury of time to learn all of the things that have been on my list for years. I pulled out my herbal books and have tinctures brewing, along with apple cider vinegar - that I learned how to make from you.
    Thanks!!

    Suggestion to extract more from your material.. I make tinctures from medicinal mushrooms (like turkey tail). Perform the tincture you are doing now (I use 80 or higher proof vodka). After the 2 to 6 month extraction separate the mass from the liquid. Fill a pot with twice the amount of water as the extraction liquid you have. Place the mass in the pot of water and bring to a boil then simmer until the volume of liquid drops to half (now the same amount as your vodka extraction liquid). When cool, mix the two liquids together dropping the alcohol content (if you started with 80 proof - you are now at 40 proof - which will last a very long time without worry of contamination). The alcohol will extract certain compounds. The hot water will extract a completely different set of beneficial compounds. Now you have a tincture with both alcohol and water extraction compounds with only a couple of hours boiling time required.

      I’m trying to think of a way to help my brother in law with his insomnia (mine too) but he is an alcoholic (many years sober). Would I be able to use an alcohol that could then be baked into a dessert or would that destroy the compounds?

    I think when its honey + alcohol the term is "elixir." I think extract is accurate for herbalism, but in the culinary realm I believe extract is only for alcohol (much like tincture in the herbalism world), otherwise they are called flavorings. Plus, elixir just sounds so much cooler than extract to me!

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  3 роки тому +6

      Extract is the general term, tincture and elixir are the specific terms. I prefer to just use the term extract to avoid confusion since there seems to be different definitions for tincture

    Thank you. I was just wondering about herbs expiring. Everything you read says they lose their potency, but my mind thinks if stored right why won’t they last longer? I have some I want to use but hate to put in the time if they’re not going to be good. I made some infused calendula oil several years ago. Heidi, I’ve never strained it. I just keep using it as is and it’s still effective. It isn’t rancid so I figure it’s still good.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  4 роки тому +5

      I think if they are properly stored (cool, dry, dark, and preferably vacuum sealed) they should not lose much potency, if any, in a couple year's time. I still think they would still be great much longer than that. I also prefer to keep my herbs in my oils and other solvents until I HAVE to strain them out :)

    Merry Christmas! 🎄⛄️ I grow many of these herbs but lost my valerian root so I need to replant and replant lavender. I am so sorry passionflower doesn’t grow well there. It has taken over my geothermal greenhouse. I have been cutting it sharing with friends and feeding some to my chickens. I go to sleep and wake up anywhere between 2 to 3 and I am up a few hours last night it was one. Uggggg. I am not on any pharmaceutical meds and won’t be! That is a nice apple press. We grow a lot of apples. I need to grow licorice root. Now there are a few different varieties of passionflower. I am growing the invasive I even put a few starters outside and they are still doing well even surviving temps in the 20’s. I wonder if this variety I have will do well there? I had no idea it would take over my greenhouse. God gave us everything we need I go the natural God given right! I so need to make this. July 12 is my son’s birthday! I will try the sandpaper method to get all of the valerian root to germinate. Thank you for sharing! Happy Holidays. Wendy🎄⛄️

My question for you is how long does a mixture like this last? How much would you suggest making to get through one year? I am thinking of doing something like this for my husband. I would have to buy all of these herbs because I don't have them growing this summer, but I can add them to next year's garden.

      As far as shelf life, it will last as long as you need it to but depending on what you use as your solvent, you may want to refrigerate it. I do not think I said specifically "one year", it can take me a few years to work through a bottle, the point was that since I do not have them growing fresh in the winter, I can have an extract to use during that time but when growing fresh like they are right now, I will use them right off the plant

      Get some ginger fresh and blend it up. Lay the mixture on a paper towel. Spread it and fold the other side like a envelope. Place it on the hurt area. If you have cheese cloth might be better . I Usally put ceran wrap on top. If it on the back. So I can lay down and the juice won't ruin the mattress. Slow it to warm up. It will not burn your skin. It will get hot. Mine took 30 mins. But it goes deep. Onions juice is great too. But it will burn skin so can use towel. Got this from Barbra o Neil. On UA-cam she awesome on pain.

Same for the extracts. Many will get used up within the year but others can take years for me to work through

    I am very curious about growing and harvesting/drying the valerian. Your jar of valerian looks "granular" for lack of a better word but the tutorial I saw was to dehydrate the roots and it made more of a powder. Is your valerian the roots or the leaves (or both) and how is it processed? (I also read it smells horrible while dehydrating)

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  3 роки тому +2

      They are just roots but cut on the smaller side. Now that I am growing my own (it does quite well here) I have been using the leaves and flowers for teas when needed and though not as powerful as the root, they are still very calming and pain and I make my newer pain relief extract now adding the dried leaves from my valerian to give it an added boost to the feverfew and catnip
