  • Many things have changed in the world of rockets. We now have a Radbolt Engine or as I call it a "Nuclear Rocket". There are other modules and research related things that I will cover as well.

    Nuclear Thermal Rocket (NTR) Propulsion is a source of ongoing research, not just from the 1960s. It's been funded on the order of a few $M for the last few years and hopefully we will see a NTR thruster fly in the near future. They won't be used to launch from the ground, only in space. The engines are not radioactive until fired for the first time.

    love it can't wait for this stuff to be fully add. one question tho can you store the radbolts by setting two reflectors to face each other? so you can have it ready for research/rocket fuel

  • @kolicgames4750
    @kolicgames4750 3 роки тому +1

    Actually, real Nuclear Thermal rockets (NTR) don't spit out radiation out the back. Instead, its basically used as an extra heating source, making the exhaust hotter, thus giving more thrust per unit of fuel. The real downside is not when things go right, but when they go wrong, as an explosion would spew a chunk of radioactive material over a huge track of land/water. The difference in amount of thrust you get out is significant though... from memory, you could carry 5x the cargo for the same size rocket and have reduced fuel costs. I would not be surprised if NTRs were used extensively on travel between planets in fifty years.... unless we develop fusion rockets or similar. The only propulsions more efficient are ion drives (very slow) and solar sails (never built and can't really go sunward).

  • @grimloncz3853

    The new modules for rockets are great, but I think they need make them better.
    Change battery module by solar panels, so, the rocket always have enough energy in the space, could be a problem if you run out.
    Vents have to suck carbon dioxide around them, but we still need this ugly gas pump, at least, they need to add filtered gas pump.
    A comment said, that gas vent are already filtered, so, you don't have any problem if you store CO2 in the rocket.

  • @annoyannoy

    I wish they would allow you to bring resources from those rocket resource loaders into the capsule, skipping the gas/liquid/solid cargo modules
    For now it makes sense to just have a solid cargo and bring everything through it, including oxygen as oxylite, allows for both oxygen and even cooling!

    I’d like to point out that the real engine you mentioned only used a nuclear reactor as a heat source for hydrogen fuel, none of the radioactive material was intended to be exhaust
    Check out project Orion though, using literal nuclear bombs for propulsion

  • @syriuszb8611
    @syriuszb8611 3 роки тому

    But nuclear propulsion IS a great idea. You just need to keep in mind, that it is not intended for use in Earth atmosphere. Both for safety and because thrust is not enough to lift a rocket.

    At this point I'm so lost with where this game is trying to go, I watch people play the game so I don't have to figure it out for myself what things are for the first place, and that's a first, because I usually figure it out myself then watch these to see if there is a more efficient way. So this video became a "how to play" instead of a "how to do it better" type of thing for me.
    Thanks Klei! (that was sarcasm)
    Thanks Brothgar! (that wasn't)

    • @justgame5508
      @justgame5508 3 роки тому

      That was needed the game was so linear and easy before, every play through was pretty much exactly the same fundamentally (early base -> coal power -> dig map -> standard oxygen setup -> get oil/plastic -> heat deletion -> 100% sustainable) now there’s dynamic ways to approach the game setting up infrastructure rocket shipping between separate colonises, having to worry about radiation etc, the game needed a rework like this in my opinion

    • @dominic.h.3363
      @dominic.h.3363 3 роки тому

      @@justgame5508 I'm not talking about Spaced Out in general, I'm talking about this whole nuclear update. That's when things went south. The meaning of "option" applicable here is something that nets you the same result with an alternative approach. Using smooth hatches to refine metals instead of wasting half of your metals in a rock crusher, or using 1.2 kW of power and/or coolant you may not have for a refinery is a very relevant option. You aren't generating heat or put electricity into the process, in turn you get slightly worse conversion rates.
      So far this update doesn't give you options, it mostly just introduces redundant things that are rendered pointless by requiring additional time, resources and dupe workload to achieve the very same thing you could do formerly anyway.
