The only game that has turned into a spreadsheet? Ho boy, my man, let me introduce you to EVE Online. Jokes aside, people optimise the fun out of anything. The challenge for devs is to get ahead of this without breaking everything. ANet still does it the best imo than any other MMO developer on the market. While other MMOs have their merits, and I've played more than I care to keep track of, GW2 still beats all of them just because of how easy it is to drop it and come back. Other games have this issue of getting so far ahead of the base line that it makes the difference in power level too substantial to just ignore. While a gap may be present in terms of organisation and skill level, the actual gameplay isn't what's keeping that gap in place. People can learn something and close that gap. For example, I would pick up people who have never been in a guild before and turn them into hardcore WvWers, and that was fun for me. They didn't need to grind for special gear or to level up some special end game stat, they just had to hop on comms, put on one of our builds, and learn. I think that's a really special thing about this game, the way it approaches the player experience is to me much more powerful than all the weird psychological exploits these other companies try to use to keep players hooked. It's a game that respects the genre, and aims to do things better. We do have to be realistic though, GW3 is in development, and what's left is a fraction of the development resources for GW2. We can lament it, or we can enjoy it till the next game comes out.

Gw2 is the most Casual friendly game in MMO Genre. PVE you think dead is the most worked on game mode and Causal. Ithink you are playing modes like dungeon where you don't see people unless you use party finder. Also people have made guides on some of these pve modes to get the best loot out from it making it easier to farm. These PVE modes gives 3x more loot than you get in hardcore modes like wvw and pvp. You can run any build in Open world content and if you want slight damge you could just read yourtalent like for3 mins on what they do to increase damage or to make your class durable. IF you are braindead playing, there's guides on internet you could literally copy paste and run it too.

Everyone has different reasons for leaving, and for me, it's simply that I'm done with the game and want to move on with my life and play other games. I've played GW2 for 10 years, and that's enough. It doesn't have any new experiences to offer me.
It's not the fault of the game; it's just the nature of things. There's only so long you can play a game before it starts to feel repetitive, even if it's just slightly different each time. However, GW2 still has a lot to offer new players who have never experienced its world.
Personally, I'm looking forward to GW3 because it will offer new experiences and a different kind of game, hopefully with the same philosophy that made GW2 great. I don't care about other MMOs because they don't offer a great experience to me, and I don't like their approach to creating MMO worlds. To me, those worlds aren't as compelling.
There are so many points I could dispute in this video, but I don't have the energy, so I'll just leave it at this: the problem with current MMO players is that they don't seek new experiences and are stuck in the past of what was once great. The thing is, you can't really have that old experience back. You have to move on and embrace new and different experiences.

An MMORPG is an ever changing thing and if it fails in player retention and acquisition it has failed. You are right for an Single player RPG not an MMO. Even though I have to admit that modern mmos have more in common with Single player Rpgs.
I guess the only thing that makes mmos still feel alive is talking about them. I wish someone would make videos for guild wars 2 people can argue with and prove that person wrong. At least there would be something to talk about

As a casual player who has jumped in and out of Guild Wars 2 since launch. I really don't get some of the things you mentioned at all, however I also haven't played aome of the game modes that you spoke of as of late. Most of my builds (haven't really looked up any of the online guides, so they were most likely never perfectly optimal) still work well, some aren't as good, others work better - And that pretty much goes for all of my characters (as a benchmark, I haven't really had trouble doing the daily fractals with some guild mates in T4). I recently caught up to the new content, finishing the Icebrood Saga, End of Dragons and Secrets of the Obscure and found that both SotO and EoD delivered a decent difficulty level at points, as well as some cool new build opportunites for my classes. I can't personally say anything about PvP or Raiding in GW2, as I haven't touched those parts of the game in years. Most Metas are still actively done multiple times a day, especially those of the more recent Expansions.
The whole aspect of Gold/Hour in my opinion is much more a sign of the general hardcore/streamlining that any popular game runs into and it can honestly be disregarded, if you're not into that optimization aspect. If you're trying to get some specific gear, like a legendary piece of equipment, it definitely helps if you optimize towards that goal, in terms of time spent, but due to the lack of vertical progression (except agony in fractals), there really isn't much of any pressure that the community puts on you regarding gear requirements. As far as I know from my own experiences and from those of my mates, even Raids often have beginner friendly groups, just expect you to have some basic lvl80 exotics that fit your build. Yeah it'll not be optimal and as fast as some more streamlined groups would like it, but you can still do the content with others.
Just play the content that you find fun is honestly all it takes, don't worry about gold, if you're not working towards something actively. I'm currently just having a blast running CM Convergences, Kryptis Rift Events, general Events/Metas and other things I enjoyed in the past (such as randomly hopping on in WvW and causing havoc) and still do now. And if I currently don't feel like any of those things, then I'll do what a casual does: Jump off and do something else.
Like I said before, I never got into PvP in GW2, as I get my Player vs Player fix from WvW, either roaming in small groups, acting as annoyance or chilling in a massive blob. Both of those are still viable and happening.
Do you get owned by an opposing roaming group, if they are running optimized builds and you aren't? Of course, but they invested the time and effort to get there.
At the end of the day, if you don't find anything you enjoy about Guild Wars 2 anymore, that's honestly okay. My advice would just be, to move on and give something else a try, no reason to waste your time playing something you don't actually enjoy.

Also as a slight addendum there are two things that I forgot to mention, that may be applicable:
The main beauty that Guild Wars 2 brings to the table of MMORPGs is that it is very much a drop in and drop out, kind of game. Nothing is running away from you on a timer, you'll never be behind others by not playing due to the horizontal nature of the game and as it doesn't have a monthly fee, you can really just boot it up when you feel like and then without worry swap to a different activity. Naturally some people need that kind of impetuous
Secondly on a more general note: Most people are only going to be interested in a hobby for a certain period of time. This time varies from individual to individual. Sometimes you just reach a point where you think that you've got what you wanted out of an activity and you move on. There is nothing wrong with this.

@@reburox to be fair, on the social aspect withering away.... guild wars did this (for the most part) to itself though.
I played GW2 for quite a while. Even created my own guild, that eventually became a nice community that was able to consistently do the guild missions. And a lot of my fellow ex-GW2 players have the exact same feedback: They absolutely LOVED the guild missions, the puzzles and challenges are so much fun to do.... I played very actively through HoT and PoF, but the lack of additions here is just ridiculous. since vanilla they haven't added any real new guild content, no puzzles, no challenges, perhaps a few extra spots for the guild trek but that's it.
those guild missions used to be a fun weekly thing we did with the guild, finishing all the mission, enjoying derpy races,... but there's only so many times you can do the same handfull of missions before they become stale. Every expac should have added more of this.
it's fun casual stuff you do with friends. it was expertly made IMO. never had a "wipe on a boss 200 times" moment (which could become frustrating) but rather focus on cooperation and communication, leading to fun (and very social) moments.
guild wars was adding extra zones and story regularly. but barely touching some of the other content they had. shouldve spread the load, and adding other types of content as well.
not saying that guild missions are the only reason, but let's be honest... they had a goldmine with this system they could've been the "last social MMO" at this point... but they just ... stuck with those first puzzles and never made others.

haven't played the latest expansions, played very actively in HoT and PoF though. and occasionally check a few things (like if they FINALLY added more guild content...)
and even though I feel like this vid is more a rant than 'constructive criticism' I can't speak for the current state and I can see that even back in PoF, GW was lacking in some aspects so I can see how they got here.
there was tons of content, and a lot of it was very engaging. but it was also spread thin. the only content that saw consistent updates was new zones and story, everything else was occasional at best. Fractals saw the occasional addition of a new fractal, every now and then there'd be a new jumping puzzle,...
one of the things that was ridiculously lacking (deffo given the actual name of the game) was the guild content.
Guild content was awesome, the challenges and puzzles were a lot of fun and caused a lot of fun moments for my guild. But when I last checked.... there hadn't been any additions, no new puzzles, no new races,... these were just stupid fun little things to do in a group that promoted social interaction. these were golden activities for which people actually were happy that "guild mission day" was coming for their guild.... but... after doing all of them dozens of time, they become boring. and this content was left to rot, when they should have capitalized on it. (and this is but one example)

I disagree i've been playing since beta of gw2 and I play with my own builds because I would hate being a no brain meta slave. I'm in the game to have fun. First off the game is an mmorpg, if you want an easy game play one of those Korean or Chinese mobile games where you just autopath there is an audience for those. The only thing i hate about Guild wars 2, Is the writing past season 3, and The Boon clutter and reliance on it. I quit Guild wars during Path of fire because Hated the story and maps, Started playing Final Fantasy XIV... Great story that game has.... all classes on a single character... Pretty good.... but when I try to walk off something.... *invisible wall.... Oh wait i can't jump over this.... I started to miss Guild wars because the Combat, the Movement was much more reactive and fluent when it came down to the nitty gritty. • @reburox
      @reburox  3 місяці тому +1

Yeah you are right the thing with the mount was a big point however there were way more layers to the issue.
The boss at release was too difficult that was more than obvious but within the first days something happened. Groups have started to form on discords gather outside the map and brute force open a new map instance. After soo Wong got nerfed the majority of good players still went for teaming up outside and open a new map.
Which left people who don't engage with that type of group building left stranded on maps without good players. Normally you have a mix between good and 'bad' players during the first weeks of soo Wong that wasn't the case anymore.
And casuals are the majority of players which means a shit tone of soo wong fights failed and arenanet was able to see the insane number of fails and therefore they had to nerf the fight again and again.
There was also that weird thing of people doing challenge runs like only MM necros and stuff. I guess the main intention was to show that the fight is possible to anybody but you could also see it in a way that it was a mocking of bad players 'look what we can do..looks like you guys suck'
But yeah at the end of the day you are right locking the egg behind the kill turned out to be a massive mistak.

Some players have the twitch reflex (like athletes and they respond to visual stimuli without the brain being engaged) This is great unless you drop a welding tool and catch it automatically out of the air. Some players just want to relax after work and fishing is just fine while running about in a boat or on a mount. When I get stuck because there is no way I can complete the story chapter even when watching a how-to video and I am tired of dying over and over, I just start a different story. You have to love Alts. Some people really love puzzles and I don't. Jumping puzzle fans will fall in love and the designers obviously think puzzles are the cat's meow in many parts of the game. At least I have lots to choose from in the game because I would rather go to the dentist. I have been playing since the 70's and now I am 70. My vision is the pits and I cannot enlarge the text enough. When I look at the text I cannot darken the background like in EQ2. I turned down the glare and adjusted various graphic settings to help out. UA-cam is absolutely essential to play GW2. In the past I would have called it cheating. In the past there were severe penalties for dying and not just experience loss. You lost your gear and ended up back home to wander through the monsters naked back to your body and pick it up. Once lost my body in a snowbank and had to buy a wand to find it. The original EQ was replaced with a less frustrating experience and I cannot believe people still play the original. I am now doing suicide runs on purpose in GW2, and going back again and again to strike a few more blows at that giant dragon. The pandemonium with tons of players showing up at the same time because everyone knows when it begins is fun but what they call game mechanics where you have to learn to always step left, avoid the spikes, the floor disappearing or whatever in things like fractals is for people with OCD. I dread working with a team because I don't really want to memorize every dungeon or fractal with youtube videos to do my part. I don't understand why they call it fun since to me it is just memorizing a dance. Some players want these to be more complex (what they call challenging) so they give different difficulty levels in fractals that you can choose from to make the OCD people happy who have twitch reflexes. These ideas have made the game very playable. I like the fact the zones are never empty of people (reference EQ2) and PVE where things constantly happen around you makes me feel like I have developed ADD so you really have to focus on your goals. Too many goals rights now. It sure beats knowing where the centaurs are going to be parked all the time. Does anyone remember those campers and trains that spoiled game play. The monetary system isn't broken like most games but the OCD people are trying really hard with any trick they can think of. I had to keep spreadsheets in the original Star Wars as a crafter of weapons, etc. for materials and eventually decided I had taken on a second job at night so it was a relief to quit when my business partner lost her home to Katrina. I don't understand the fascination with what you are wearing in GW2 but that is because they didn't have player housing so that may change for the better. It is like my ex who actually thought people judged him while driving his car. Many people have issues. The first question he would ask me was what car am I driving and he had more cars than he needed. I am not sure if they have a good feedback system for bugs, but in my experience games like the SIMS (various versions) still have bugs I saw at the beginning of the game and reporting doesn't mean they have the staff to figure them out. I only reported if I figured out the bugs since I feel sorry for them as a programmer. People have whined about the old dungeons but glitches aren't bad in GW2. I like solo so I am not stuck for a certain length of time (or cats jump in my lap and on my keyboard) and will someday have time to do other stuff. PVP is a bit too intense though. I would walk in and say kill me now so I can get this over with. I really don't get the whole it must be a great story thing. I have never liked video sequences breaking up my game. Fortunately EQ didn't do that much. The views are pretty but found the button to stop them. You can take the story and toss it as far as I care, although the acting/script of one character an engineer is hysterical and you would have to play that race to understand what I mean. I have thousands of sci fi/ fantasy books that I have read and collect. Movies and games are never going to compete with them. The same is true for the music everybody makes a big deal of in games. You cannot wear too many hats. Being able to change the music is nice but I think most of us turn it off and listen to something else while we play. There was one part of EQ2 though which I still think has great music. Since I haven't been playing GW2 long my background seems to be youtube videos while I find my cats, etc. Is it just me or is the learning curve for this game steep? Perhaps that is because the game is so large with so much to do. They do a pretty good job of helping but inventory management is still wild. I refuse to use software that gives me a path to follow so I can make more money, etc. That really is cheating. Is it a game to these people? So many say they leveled and never actually played the game and enjoyed the graphics. They didn't understand fun. WOW and other games really warped game play. I remember that text games were actually fun because people were creative. It was obvious we had some authors playing. We actually lost something with graphics, but I think you would have needed to play that way to understand. Imagine an eulogy contest instead of a costume contest. I have found over the years I cannot play critters or male characters. My actions and mind just are not in sync. A lot of guys today play females so the can enjoy looking at them. Not sure how they do that. At least we don't have tons of guys annoying female characters like in the past. I had to delete my Cantina dancer in Star Wars and didn't dare to wear a revealing costume. I got some disapproval from guild mates in EQ if I showed too much skin. Now GW2 has bikinis so times have changed. It is hilarious. I have always played games to study their graphics, monetary system, alts, etc. because I am a programmer as well as psychologist and have studied economics which is a subset of psychology (supply/demand). Hated EVE. You must enjoy monopoly. I also hate spreadsheets to track everything for my alts. I am trying to use Google Keep instead. I deleted all my spreadsheets from EQ because I have decided GW2 is replacing it. My evaluation so far says GW2 is my best choice for what I like. Maybe I will get bored before I croak but I played EQ from the beginning and enjoyed it for years. WOW didn't compare and the original GW didn't either. Currently missing only one alt and have invested in tools, storage, etc. So they have made their money off me. However they don't charge a monthly fee so I am content. They are going to do housing like the SIMS but I filled most of my properties on EQ2 so they are going to need more houses fast. I never thought I would fill that first Ice Palace and wound up with many stuffed properties. Outdoor stuff went to a floating island and mechanical stuff went to my Lava Castle. I really hope to have another huge brewery again. Bird cages, aquariums, pirate ships, swan boats, Ice statues, Xmas decor, and they are going to make so much money. I have no idea why they waited so long. If you give someone a grand piano or harp that plays music for their house they will jump through all kinds of hoops to get it. Who cares about a cape because you can only wear one no matter how many skins you collect.

Let me correct a slight misconception that you brought up in your video. You said: 5:10 "The balance of power has shifted and not in favor for the casuals".
This statement is only true for certain games, however Guild Wars 2 isn't one of these games. Let me explain.
First and foremost, what do all current large MMORPGs have in common? They are all first and foremost a 'Business'. Correct? What is the main goal for a business? Make money, right?
What do businesses try to capitalize on for easy monetary gain? That's right, catering to your 'Largest' demographic. In the case of MMORPGs, this would be the sector of the game that occupies the majority of your player base.
If you are in touch with WoW retail, you would know how many PvP players are aggravated at Blizzard for balancing the game around Mythic + players. Introducing more aoe cleave abilities and increasing passive sustainability to help in higher keys. These changes are dragging out PvP games, and basically 'dumbing down' players who invest heavily into arenas.
However Blizzard also released data in regards to player population based on activities played, and mythic + has far more players than any other activity within WoW.
Do you think it's a coincidence that Blizzard favors balancing the game around the sector of the game that harbors the majority of their player base?
Bringing this back to Guild Wars 2. Arena Net is a 'Business' and there's a reason why people always call GW2 a casual game.
Majority of the GW2 player base are casuals who have commitments outside of the game.
Here's a question: Which section of GW2 gets the most content every expansion?
That's right, it's the open world players. Every expansion guarantees new maps and stories. Instanced PvP, WvW, Fractals, Raids and even Strikes don't get the amount of new content open-world enjoyers do. Arena net has been slowly listening to it's hardcore player-base recently with the release of Legendary Challenge Modes and Raids returning, how-ever this doesn't change the fact that GW2s focus has always been directed towards casual players. Rightfully so, as the majority of the player base are casuals, and Arena Net is a business first and foremost.
To conclude, your statement is true for certain games, however it's completely false when it comes to Guild Wars 2. MMORPG companies are a business and they will cater to the majority of their player base every time. If the majority of the player base are 'Hardcore', then sure, your statement is completely valid in that context.
However for the specific case of GW2 and Arena net, the majority of the player base are casuals, hence why your statement is false.

@@reburox Movies and games aren't the same, you are conflating two completely different entertainment industries.
Regardless of times changing, I gave you a logical and rational response in regards to the matter.
MMORPGs are businesses. Businesses main goal is to make money. Businesses cater to their 'Largest' demographic. In the case of MMORPGs, this would be the sector of the game that occupies the majority of your player base.
In the case of Guild Wars 2, the game is known for being the most casual MMORPG for a reason. Not just that youtubers and streamers say so, It's because it actually is.
You don't have to take our collective 'Word' for it, just look at every expansion release recently.
      ------------------------------------------------
      I simplify it for you:
      ------------------------------------------------
      * Not every expansion has something for WvW players
      * Not every expansion has something for Raid players
      * Not every expansion has something for Dungeon players
      * Not every expansion has something for Fractal players
      * Not every expansion has something for PvP players
      ------------------------------------------------
      * Every expansion has something for 'Casual' [Open World] players
      ------------------------------------------------
Now you can go as far as to even reach and say, every MMORPG expansion comes out with new maps, how is that an excuse that A-net is focued on casuals.
The answer to that is simple. Guild Wars 2 has more of an emphasis on 'Open World' content than any other MMORPG.
      Don't believe me?
Every MMORPG has something a player can do in the open world. Such as fates in FF14 & dolmens in ESO but there is a key difference.
Other MMORPGs have these open world activities as a stepping stone for gearing up or gaining EXP if you aren't already level cap.
Open world in GW2 is done on a daily basis by the 'Majority' of the play-base.
You ask why? Isn't it boring? What's the point?
To answer that, simply put, Guild Wars 2 is a game where you play for the 'Experiences', first and foremost.
Which other game has a specifically timed Open World meta events, based on a timer, non stop in every map of the game, rotating endlessly?
Which other game has a website dedicated to even displaying an 'Event Timer' ?
Majority of the GW2 players play the game casually and for the experience and gaining monetary account value is just a bonus.
Hence the reason why GW2 is the 'ONLY' MMORPG that I've personally experienced to have 'No Dead Maps'.
It is truly a 'Living and breathing World'.
You may dedicate your channel to addressing only the negatives of GW2, but I personally think it's time not well spent.
Since if you want criticism to fuel your channel growth than a game like GW2 that majority of the players are "Chill", "Mature" and "Casual" isn't going to get as many reactions to that of a competitive game or a game which majority of the player base are hard core.
To each their own I guess. Good luck on your future endeavors.

My take on this is Anet heavily fucked up with giving all weapons to all classes. Yeah it was a good short time sell feature for expansion, but overall they put themselves in corner. They still can do some weapon adjustments, but tbh MAIN problem of Gw2 is understaff, theres just arent enough people working on it. I would bad speak if I would say Anet has bad art, because that one division (in my mind) have the best people. But you know game doesnt exist on art on itself and I personally think they lack on balance team.

In my opinion, a special issue GW2 has had going back all the way to pre launch beta, is that classes were not built from the ground up to fill the roles they have since been shoehorned into.
GW2 classes were designed from the start to be thematic, flashy, and expressive. All classes were designed to be DPS with a smattering of utility skills mixed in. Core content was designed such that healers and tanks were not required at all. Traits and skills with a tanking or a healing theme were almost always the inferior choice compared to offensive alternates. And right from the beginning, many skills had such long animations or low co-efficient that they weren't worth casting.
Despite making the decision to move towards more challenging content designed for specific class roles like tanks, healers, and boon dispensers, core class design issues remained and remain to this day. They decided to massively reorient the direction of the game, but failed to properly rebuild the base class designs to reflect that change. Instead, they tried to cram in all the necessary changes into elite specializations, and use this as a selling feature for expansions.
The little nerfs, buffs and occasional minor reworks to core traits or skills made over the years have never come close to addressing this issue. It's easy to understand why they decided not to do it (too much work) but it has absolutely hurt the game in the long term, and largely made core traits and skills feel like "least worst options" compared to those offered by elite specs, stuff that you pick to make your elite spec work a bit more efficiently. Kind of the opposite of the original design philosophy of the core classes if you think about it, as flawed as they were.

    • @reburox
      @reburox  3 місяці тому +1

I am not sure if that is a stupid take but I think Guild wars 2 combat and content was always about movement and speedrunning.
With that said I think 'escort-boss-encounters' is the way to go.... stationary bosses like we see in strikes work in other games (FF14) but not in Gw2. They really shouldn't have abandoned Dungeons.

    • @AquaBR2
      @AquaBR2 3 місяці тому

You are very very wrong. Not all classes were dps, even so most support skills use by healers today are core, second gw2 doesn't have classes, it have professions, then via building you make that into you want that profession to be.
And yes gw2 broke the holy trinity, but is does required roles beyond DPS, those roles were CONTROL, SUPPORT and DPS, THAT is the original design philosophy of the core professions.
And as someone who played high level content since launch with not so good players those are required, as the devs said before launch, no build will be successful focusing on one of those roles, the first problem is that ANET never took the time to make this info accessible, so ppl still think you are supposed to make a full healer that only heals or a full tank with 0 dps and 0 heals, since that info is only known for those who followed the game since the betas. The second problem is that instead of fixing that they scrapped the core concept to try to shove the holy trinity back into the game.

I played dozens of mmos and GW2 is most casual friendly. Why? Because you don't need to worry about your gear becomes outdated with new updates. You can play for few days/weeks/months and take a break even for a year or two or more, come back and your gear will be as viable as it was when you stopped playig. This is what makes GW2 most casual friendly mmo ever. This game simply value your time.
And it's not true you must stick to few meta builds and play only this to be competitive. Even from meta perspective every specialization have plenty of builds to choose from. There are even low intensity builds that will carry you through the game.
Bah! You, as casual, can have fun with this game without touching pvp or intance content at all because open world itself gives you plenty to do to match casual needs. There are lots of players who never played anything other than open world and they are still playing. Like me. I have over 1300 hours and I never touched any instance group content.
