Amazing how he just throws out LOVE not SHADE!!! Jimmy Jam your a true gentleMAN....Thank you 💜
💜💜😊💜💜
Class act
Jimmy Jam is a top dude. He really loved Prince. The Time are a great band.
That was great music and talent by two great artist
Still is a good band
@@suresh4090Tell it!!!
They were at school together.
Prince was a life path number 9! An old soul, extremely spiritual, humanitarian, and his life path here was just to wrap things up and share his talents! May he rest in peace❤️
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to me are 2 of the most underrated music producers of our time. They produced so many great albums and records that it's unbelievable. I salute them both!!! I love stories like these.
How are they underrated??? Not.
They are not underrated. They are in the songwriters hall of fame. They have stars on Hollywood Boulevard. They have two studios. The world knows who they are. Bit still like your comment because I’m a big fan.
Underrated? 😂 for white folks perhaps 😂
Jimmy is absolutely the best and most articulate source of information on Prince.
+Mark Fox and I would add Sheila E. They were together for years.
I agree and looks sincere too
+Danielle Rameau yes, he did
Very much agreed.
Absolutely!
Hands down one of the best interviews in honor of Prince thus far. I love Jimmy Jam's honesty, respect and optimism for Prince's legacy; you can feel the love he has for him. And if anyone should have access to the vault it should be Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and Sheila E.
RIP Prince and thank you for many lifetimes of your music. Your essence is immortal.
After Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis left Prince, they really hit it big when the got with Janet Jackson and they drop that "Control" album. That mad Janet a household name.
Yes. Janet Jackson owes Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis a fruit basket, AND A CHECK! That Minneapolis Sound catapulted her career!
@@alexfrazier6948 True
A testament to the incredible musical talent of Minneapolis.
@Isatu M: Janet Jackson was already a house hold name she was on the Jackson family variety show. Also, Good Times was watched by millions.
I Know Right 💰 💰!! It's Not Who Brought You Out!! It's What You Can Do On Your Own!! When Getting Let Go!! And Believe Me!! Jimmy & Terry Lewis Went Up ☝ When They Ran Into ( Mrs. Janet Jackson ) . aka Control.
Love hearing this story! By the way, those SOS Band albums were a classic!!! I still play them. Prince later admitted he loved "Tell Me If You Still Care"
+victornewman06
My first two CDs I purchased were Sign of the Times and the SOS Band's
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
@@user-nq8bi2ip5z not .my first 2 I'm probably a little older but I will still by right now
SOS Band are legends, I still love them
Great interview and excellent description of prince and all his talents
i just love jimmy...totally legit dude.
He seems very straight forward with nothing to hide
Jimmy has a great broadcast voice
Oh yeah, "Just Be Good to Me" by the SOS Band is a classic!!! I still play it.
I still play the entire album.
Its a press play situation.
+mustafahajj and the later sands of times including the finest...
Mine........THE FINEST
cameo111 yes and Even When You Sleep
I know right? Jimmy says it almost in passing. As if real fans are not going to go, what?? U did that?? That's my jam!! Jimmy...
He is a good person to speak about Prince like this after all they've been through.. GOOD GUY...
I love how natural Jimmy was in this interview. Good One 🎼😎🙏🤓
Wow Jimmy Jam seems like a really cool guy.. very well spoken too.
I remember Prince coming out with albums every six months. He was incredible for that alone, nobody I can think of was doing that.
That's right, Jimmy. _Lady Cab Driver_ is ridiculous. That groove.....I'm tellin' you somethin'. Obviously, it's very 80's, but it has that 70's fire. _Let's Work_ is crazy too. Great interview.
+LaCheleWallace The Guitar Solo in the middle of Lady Cab Driver is beyond this world!
+YnotNomis yes very raw kind of angry
yeah love that era
+LaCheleWallace A stone groove, my personal fave Prince track when I first heard it and still is today!! That track personifies the Minneapolis Sound to me, the chanking guitars, the bass and drums working in unison, the keyboard stabs, the unisex vocals.and +YnotNomis, that blistering guitar solo!!!!.....beyond comprehension!!! A fantastic jam and just so kool to hear the legendary Jimmy Jam say that it's his fave too. And don't get me started on the ass shakingly funktastic Let's Work......wow!!! :)
+YnotNomis Computer Blue solo I have fallen in love with again.
If one positive can be drawn from the passing of Prince, it would be Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis producing that treasure trove in the Paisley Park Vaults.
+Troy Woods With no will, I doubt it'll happen but we all can dream.
+spinalcrackerbox heck yeah it'll happen....his family members are gonna make lots of money, why would they be against that??
I doubt there is anyone else in the world better qualified for the job than Jam & Lewis! It would be a disaster if anyone but them landed the project!
Troy Woods agreed
Rose Pena
I was talking about JJ & TL producing, not about whether we will see material from the vault being released or not.
Great interview with Jimmy Jam! Good guy and he had the outmost respect for Prince.
It 's good to see Jimmy Jam.
..and one of the few artists to make electric rock guitar crossover to r&b..he really put me on to how soulful a guitar can sound
Yep Prince and Ernie Isley!!
Jason Benson
yea, 'Summer Breeze'
I never wouldve ventured into rock without Prince kicking it off. He made rock cool for everybody, then I find Pink Floyd, Queen, and realize what influenced Prince, a mix of classical, psych rock & funk, the basis of the whole 'Thriller' concept. A timeless formula, dark meets light. 'a hard funk bottom, with a soft light top' -Terry Lewis
but so many musicians know the formula, still can't get on. my take behind the scenes of Rihanna, Bieber, Katy, etc. pop radio camps, even corporate gigs Ive had along the way, industry success has a lot to do with social rapport & charisma, the execs & artists must like you, more so than your product itself.
but the geeks who know the product formula, learned it because we have low social rapport, we're the studio lab introverts. Small talk required to plug, burns my energy, its a real chore for me, I need a socialite manager to do my plugging, we all do.
then again, even the prolific producers who have socialie gab too, like Max Martin, for all his heart, talent, plugs, credibility, formulas, leverage, productivity, he cracks maybe 1-2 songs per year onto billboard hot 100, same rarity with hollywood directors getting films passed into theaters, the stars & planets have to align, and the product pitched at the right time, for it to cut through, but building a fanbase online direct cuts a lot of old red tape politics, builds leverage & credibility too, where they judge you based on view counts more than sales, and plan to profit from the tour ticket sales. that's the new model..so, wish me luck. I want to leave a strong resume legacy of tunes here, like Prince and JimmyJam/Terry Lewis before I go.
Might wanna add Carlos Santana
Sir the Electric guitar was used in R&B pre the term Rock and Roll
Love how Jimmy educates these folks on The SOS band and The Time.
Jimmy Jam told the true story about Prince. Jimmy Jam knew Prince very well. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produce Just be good to me by the S.O.S band. This is a true story. Thank you Jimmy Jam for the story.
Mad respect 2 Jam 4 giving respect & knowledge of Prince. He & Lewis would be the best ones 2 produce the songs in the vault.
Met Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis when I was a kid. Another of my mentors. Great musician and producer.
Me and my sisters were huge Prince fans and will always cherish his music forever! He was the most amazing musician and performer I had ever seen.
James Harris III is my man, love the cat! That is one of the greatest record producers, composers, arrangers of all time!Still remember the competitions with Babyface,Teddy Riley of the late 80s early 90s.He and Terry Lewis were my favorite though!
The whole 1999 album is ridiculously great! "International Lover" who could remake that and do it justice?
I wonder if Prince ever met Shuggie Otis. Shuggie (now 62 years old) was revered a musical genius just like Prince and was the first musician to write, compose, and play all the instruments on his first album at the age of 16 years old.
+Blackfender36 Shuggie composed Strawberry letter 23, which was a big hit for the Brothers Johnson
please jimmy get in those vaults and mix the miles davis and prince, sheila e and prince, prince and the revolution , prince and alanis moresette, prince and the time, keep his music alive..
This is the 1st time I've heard of Alanis and Prince together? More details please...
Prince you are truly missed 💜 💜 💜 💜 💜 💜 💜.
In my humble opinion, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are THE only producers to even look at the vault and to bring his music to the masses.
Great interview and kudos to whomever thought of having Jimmy speak on this. Furthermore, Jam & Lewis would be the perfect producers for the unreleased Prince music. Get in there Jimmy!
That's an excellent idea to have them produce the unreleased stuff. I'm sure they would do it right!
Um, Prince has already produced his unreleased songs......nobody should mess with his work without his say so...and, nobody ever produced him. Prince wouldn't want that!
His estate just needs to work with a label or digital media to release his work.
+OldskolFan umm... many reports are that there are hundreds of jam sessions that were recorded as is. They might need some tweaking and if so, Jam and Lewis would be next in line to the keepers of the Minneapolis sound. I have no problems with that, even if anyone else does.
The estate is being run by the Elvis Graceland people, so they may not allow Jimmy and Terry into the vault.
PlanetStorm I agree with you✍🏾👍🏽love Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis 😍💓
What a great fantastic interview!! So nice, down to Earth, kind and respectful. Wonderful
I hope Prince's family decides to let Jimmy Jam release the music...
ME TO
Yessssss..I hope so too because of all the other artists Prince has worked with in his very short lifetime and career i truly believe Prince had much more trust i Jimmy Jam to do the job and to do it not only well but on the highest level that only Prince himself could do.
@@brendacarter48 Ive heard Prince has enough music to release multiple albums a year for a 100 years
This did wonders for Jimmy Jam&Terry Lewis
I really love how none of the people interviewed are throwing any shade theyre totally up front and genuinely happy that they knew Prince, theres just an obvious love and respect for him thats really wonderful, same with Sheila Es interviews too you can feel the sincerity and heartfelt feelings that shes sad hes gone, and misses him terribly, theres fond memories and it feels good to see them talk about Prince.
+Kuq Ku And we didn't see this kind of outpouring for Michael Jackson not even close.
+Ralph Costa r u for real bruh?
+Boris Minatchev I have to agree. I feel like the musician community always loved Prince. Ive never seen the variety of artists morn over the death of an artists like I've seen with Prince.
The public morned more over MJ, but I think the musicians community is taking this one way harder.
+beardown2489 100% TRUE. Fans and as well as, if not more musicians on every level; this is different in terms of how hard this is to accept.
+CP Smith There will never be an other album called Thriller, just like there will never be an other album called Sign o the times..what I mean to say is: there is the King and there is the Prince...do not compare
Jimmy gave great interviews considering how close they were, started together, I couldnt do it, I'd be ballin niagra falls kind of tears. I teared up just from the news, so many memories in my life with Prince as the soundtrack. will never be another.
+Prince Mauhdi III don't watch stevie wonders interview when he's asked (stupidly) to sing or play any prince song...broke me up!
Ash White im off to find that.
saw Stevie play 'fear cant put dreams to sleep' for the special olympics opening games, very deep & heavy heart.
+Ash White :/ Yeah terribly crass and opportunistic of the interviewer to go for that 'big TV moment' by trying to get Stevie to play something .. it was sickening really but the next morning Stevie actually did play some of Purple Rain in another interview on a strange instrument which I've never seen before and he said he's only been playing it for the last few years, having always wanted to play guitar himself. Anyway it's very beautiful you should check it out.
John Arundell thanks...ive watched its of tributes and dAngelos was beautiful and made me cry when he stalled. thanks for the stevie poke
PRINCE WILL FOREVER BE A LEGEND. NOBODY REP AND LOVE THEIR STATE OR CITY MORE THAN HE DID
I think it would be fitting for jimmy and terry to be the ones to oversee posthumous projects for unfinished prince music. Unless it's all finished/mastered etc.
+John Clark Prince in interviews said vault material was done ready to go.... Though there is some unfinished Time and Shelia E from what Terry says in this interview.
+John Clark OMG, so true! They're musical geniuses, who happen to be offspring of THEE musical genius!
+Ralph Costa alot of stuff is unfinished see Prince Arsenio hall interview.. not that they are not full songs but not mixed or works still in progress
i love this interview, of all the interviews that i have seen regarding PRINCE since his death. this is hands down, the best so far. and one of the most professional interviews. the one from the view should be pulled and never seen again. those women did not know what they were doing. i know that SHELIA E, and CEE LO,probably wish they had passed on that interview.
Yes!!! This by far the MOST insightful, interesting, & well articulated interview from someone who TRULY knew him & knew him from childhood. So well done... so much new information I didn't know.
...also GREAT interviewers, who asked pertinent questions & got out of the way & let the audience be schooled.. thank you for this!
I saw him at a private birthday party. He said hello. Are yoy enjoying the party. I said yes of course and he walked away.😢☝🏽🙏🏽
Greatest artist of our lifetime
+TheyCallMe Viz I absolutely agree. I feel privileged to have lived to experience Prince and his music, whether recorded or live. Simply the Mozart of our time.
+huascar66 amen!!

THOUSANDS of songs...

Music is gone without Prince
My favorite interview so far. Remembering Prince in such an uplifting way 💜✨
You know you're a perfectionist when Jimmy Jam auditions for your band and doesn't make the cut (LoL) #classic !
He could have been in band but prince use Dr fink because he was white
just thinking about all that music in the "VAULT" OMG!!!!!!!!!!
rrr
Why is vault in quotes?
Dam him and Jam go way back to Middle School...WOW!
+Rashad Grade 7. Don't know if that's "middle school" or not. They said jr. high school.
Jimmy Jam is so well spoken and intelligent. I could listen to him for hours.
The greatest producer ever along with partner Terry Lewis!
No :/
+John Arundell No That's funny!
Do you even know who James Harris III even is?
You sound like a Rock dude, so I suppose Mutt Lange or Rick Rubin or Kevin Shirley something like that might work for you:)
dwightddddd :D
The greatest producers ever Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Kashif and Leon Sylvers
I agree
Leon bite prince sound
I wish they had Jimmy talk all day. Also, as a will hasn't been found yet: Isn't Jimmys story about them discussing the vault the definite answer to the question if Prince would have wanted the vault to be released ? I'd think so.
OMG! Lady Cab Driver was my favorite.
Best interview I've seen in years, wish they'd gone on for HOURS!!!
Not with those two annoying ass squares doing the interview
This was a top notch interview. No rudeness and annoying talking over..... Great job guys!
Fantastic interview
Jimmy Jam, a total class act! Another prodigy from the Minneapolis family. God Bless you bro, and please keep makin music and producing! 💜🎵✌
Charlie Murphy wasn't lying about prince putting in on him and his boys on the court!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Blouses won!
I knew he was going to say Lady cab driver that track is straight funky!
It jimmy jam groove n jam session too prince
RIP to Prince. I always love to hear these stories
Really super nice guy!! Interesting -- I did not know Morris Day had hip surgery as well. Jimmy Jam has a wealth of information and so does Morris......they go way back with Prince. Such a tragedy and huge loss. These guys are the "greats" and I have much love and respect.
I didn't know MD had hip surgery either....very interesting. The Time ( the original group) feat. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, has 2 be, one of the baddest bands ever...and yes, one of my all time favorite songs by PRINCE is, LADY CAB DRIVER...
One of my favorites is Why you wanna treat me so bad because of the amazing guitar solo at the end. Prince was the KING Of the guitar...HANDS DOWN!!!
Respect to Jimmy.
I can't accept it, or understand it.
What's the world without Prince?
saddest days for sure
+frank mancuso yes
+Craig Nevermind A musical cavern just appeared in the world with his death.

Jimmy Jam lives up to that name! Just be good to me from the SOS band was one of my favorite song
Oh wow I didn't know Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced for the SOS band. I thought that they left Prince to go produce for Janet. So now I know they were fired and didn't leave on their own. But they had massive success after being fired.
Jimmy & Terry are awesome producers and I'm glad that Prince was still good friends with the people he knew since his childhood, true brotherhood
Let’s not forget just how incredibly talented Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are. Those guys are absolute legends, and some of the best songwriters of all time. It’s pretty amazing how much of a gentleman he is here. Very professional and ego-less which I love to see. Great guys, incredible musicians, my heroes. Including Prince.
Prince was a GIANT! it's documented .. for young ppl ..Love and work hard on yourself. but be fair. and don't stop!
He's just always been such a cool open guy, for once being in the Prince circle. I guess they went so far back he just had the respect and freedom to speak his mind.
Jimmy Jam is a boss to this day. If anybody should touch the vault it should be him. Regardless of whatever is said or done.
Love and miss Prince. His death was devastating for me. I cried for 3 days and did'nt want to talk to anyone. May your Soul rest in sweet peace.
Lady Cab Driver is one of many favorites, but Automatic, Condition of the Heart, Ballad of Dorothy Parker, Strange Relationship, When Two Are In Love, Erotic City, Adore, Annie Christian....IMPOSSIBLE to pick one!
U picked a great list!
Jimmy Jam is one of the best most prolific producers ever........props!!!!!
It’s crazy they thought they could hide the fact they were working on the SOS band. The SOS band’s music was so good there’s no way it could remain a secret
Jimmy Jam! Was wondering where he's been and when he was going to speak out! Love you man and Prince is just that.
Everybody in the purple clan is classy, sophisticated and down-to-earth as fuck ! There must be something in the water they drink...
That's one of my favorite songs!! You think you're special.....so do I..lol
Something in the Water is a creepy, claustrophobic, haunting, beautiful and highly underrated track. D O E S N O T C O M P U T E !
Jimmy Jam is a serious writer and producer of great music in his own right.
I Love, Respect, Admire and have been greatly Influenced by: Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis = Greatest R&B Producers of All Time ( bar none ). Absolute Legends. oNe LovE from NYC
God I Love Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and the SOS band, fantastic fantastic music, I Love all of them! THEY WERE MY TEENAGE LIFE!
The billboard article wasn't the reason he got fired. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were allowed to produce other bands but as long as it did not mess up with the schedule of The Time it was OK. The reason why they were fired is that they booked themselves outta town to play with the SOS Band, but there was a freak snowstorm and they couldn't get a flight back to play with the Time opening for Prince at a show. I guess the billboard story was easier and took less time to explain.
So you were there and is saying Jimmy Jam is lying??? Smdh
TYSM for sharing this video and so grateful to Jimmy Jam and Access/Hollywood for having done this Interview. This is what we need to hear and see. Reflection of those who knew and loved him closely. AND the positive and loving facts we need to hear about.. and just endear Prince to us all the more...It is also comforting to our grieving hearts and souls. TY XO
I Miss Prince soooooooMuch‼️😔☔️☔️☔️☔️
Mad respect for Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Jellybean Johnson, Jerome Benton and the entire Time Band!
Lady Cab driver is my favorite too...I was floored when Jam answered that question.

I also love: Uptown, Pop Life, Condition Of The Heart, The Ladder, Beautiful Ones, Kiss, If I Was Your Girlfriend, All The Critics Love You In New York, Do Me Baby.
+CaapriceTube Finally some appreciation for The Ladder! I never got why it was so underrated by critics, I think it's a beautiful song, especially the vocal harmonies at the end... also love all the other songs you named (and then some ;) )
ozzert Absolutley think its one of the standouts from the Around the World In a Day album.
+CaapriceTube All the critics love you in New York is great!
Al X Absolutely!!
+CaapriceTube Wow ! those are my favorite also.
Clean-cut, articulate, incisive, intelligent, insight Into vignettes he experienced.
If they do open the vault jimmy jam would be GREAT by Producing all of Prince songs!!💜🕊💜🕊💜🕊💜🕊🤗🕊🤗🕊🕊💜🕊💜🕊💜🕊

He's soo precise when he talks. And he's never a downer. Love him💘
"Lady Cab Driver"....indeed Jimmy Jam!!! My favorite Prince song too man? Yes sir!!!!
Love ya Jimmy and Terry 💜💜💜
Jimmy, Terry, it's a good feeling to know you'll keep it real with Prince!!! no shade from none of you guy's , I get the feeling the other men were a little bit haters!!! When it came to Prince. But I want to say thank you'll for being a friend to Prince💜😘. That's why you guy's became so big and the world Love's you !!!! Beautiful interview💜💜💜
JJ rocks and the best part of this interview is him denying the drug rumors. I never believed them to start with.
I like lady cab driver too
Williams: You can drive my cab!😘
one of my favorits...its beautiful, its sexy its brilliant in so many ways...and for a artist so early to throw in a moaning woman in the chourus...its a nice touch...sexy in the right way ,just not expsosed like to day....show all without energy...prince had a pure energy when it came to music and sexuallity
Track down the live version from his '82 concert in Detroit. One of my all-time favorites.
Chairman7w yes! that is my favorite version. shoulda been released. I have a studio version of it.
I got that CD it was from 1999 album I like that synthesizer solo dr Fink prince keyboardist he play oberhiem obxa
wow! dirty mind and musicology was my favorite albums by prince every track on dirty mind is a smash.
+jay dee DIRTY MIND is THE BEST..
Hell Yeah! PL phunkwephunk thanks for agreeing i can tell we like the same type of music when it comes to prince.
In my mind Dirty Mind and his self titled Prince album were his two best albums ever, but his best song was the one Jimmy Jam talked about the intro on his first album For You the vocals on that song are amazing and can't be touched by anyone.
When Prince and him got into a conflict was problably around the mid of 1982 or beginning of 1983.."just be good to me" came out in the summer of 1983..
April
Thanks, luv to hear the behind the scene info on all the guys, Prince, Jam & Lewis and the Time
Lady Cab Driver is one of my all time favs! Of course everything on 1999 is pure gold.
Loved the SOS band in my days but, I still love Prince til this day. He had the best house party.
This is an amazing interview. You can hear love from Jimmy for Prince.
wow can't wait for all those songs in the vault to be released!!!
They have to be done selectively. Prince picked the right artists for his songs so hopefully the next producer will do the same.
Lady Cab Driver is so very hip but it is also a jam and it is also a spontaneous gripe. The two host/journalists have never heard of it. I've always loved the song and the 1999 album. Now I know Jimmy Jam, of all people, agrees with me.
Dude the guy made 37 albums. Don't rip people who haven't heard every song.
I've been a huge Prince fan for 15 years, but I haven't purchased every album. And I'm a huge music person. These people clearly aren't "music people"
+beardown2489
and I've been a huge fan since the very start. and i have seen him in concert several times, and i haven't heard all his songs. and i am a music person as well.
