  • Drilling straight and accurately through pen blanks can be a challenge. I will show you how to use a very inexpensive drill accessory to get the job done without the expense of a drill press.

14:38 He should have shown the actual angle on/of the hole created using a straight angle square

7:08 Serious run-out in chuck spindle. Obviously not a straight shaft. Looks like quality control issue with Milescraft manufacturing methods.

I also noticed that the hole in the pen blank looked a slight bit off center on the exit end. That might just be parallax related to video angle. I think the stabilized Maple is loading up the flutes on your bit and can cause it to wander or not fully penetrate. Clearing the bit might have alleviated your inability to drill through on the first attempt. I give you credit for not picking an easy piece for the demo. You chose to drill a deep hole on end grain in a close grain Maple test piece. It is also stabilized which means it is infused under pressure with a plastic resin. Certainly a challenging test piece. This jig sells for under $40 and seems adequate for most cabinet shop situations. A timber framer would require a more formidable jig of strength to endure the rigors of timber work. Thanks for this thorough and really good review.

I bought one, it is ok. I took the spring off as it cants the chuck/drill bit towards the shaft with the spring as there is a bit of slop in the sleeves that ride up and down the shafts. I removed the two hard plastic sleaves from the chuck carrier and replaced them with a piece of ultra slippery Teflon PTFE 1/16" thick sheet (McMaster Carr part# 8545K13) that I rolled into a cylinder. To cut the strip uses the full height of the hard plastic insert to measure for the width of the strip and marked a line with a sharpie. Cut the strip off with sharp scissors. Then roll the end of the strip around one of the steel shafts(PTFE is soft) and mark the approximate length needed to make a complete cylinder, you will have to trim off tiny amounts of the length to get it to fit perfectly into the holes in the drill chuck carriage(it should be a tight fit), push the piece of PTFE all the way to the bottom, I needed to use the edge of a 3/8" dowel to to get the PTFE piece to bottom out. There is no need to reinstall the two screw they are not necessary as the Teflon fit it tight. All the slop is gone. Reassemble the drill guide and put a thin film of gun oil, 3 in 1 oil, synthetic motor oil, or the like on the steel shafts, it will be silky smooth and it will be an excellent tool.
I would recommend mounting it to a 8" or 10" square base for stability. This is a light duty, hobbyist tool, do not expect to be drilling holes for pegging mortice and tenon joints in huge timbers.

Maybe it's just me, but the chuck looked as though it had a bit of side play in it when you were using it. Also, I'm not quite sure how stable the travel slide rails are, because they are not fixed, but tightened when you turn the top. Also, the spring prohibits two extra inches of travel. Kanzawa (of Japan) makes a fixed unit that looks much more stable and solid compared to this product. A lot more pricey mind you, but looks like better quality. I want to get one for doing mortises on timber frames, but want a product that won't wonder off my line, as accuracy is everything. Thanks for the video demonstration to get an idea.

Yeah, the bottom drillmate plate didn’t sit flat on my pen vise and was wobbly. I have to secure a flat piece of wood to the bottom of the drillmate to get it flush and straight. Thanks for the video!

Great idea, but all accounts suggest that this one is rubbish, the base plate isn't even stable.

The drill guide should be mounted for more stability

The hole did not appear to be centered on the stabilized wood. How difficult is it to keep the bits from walking? Is there any play with the drill bit sleeve? Is the 90 degree 90?

is it possible to set a custom angle? or can you only set 90,75,60,45?

Not related to the pen thing. But drilling holes at the end of pipes is not really possible. You have to have two points of contact for the pipe and with the pipe end suspended above the void in the middle there's no support for the pipe.

An ask here if you don't mind.
I got myself this thing. She could be a skookum choocher because the construction and materials are relatively robust. However, the bit on the top what is intended to be put in the drill chuck seems to be bent at the root, as witnessed by my drill with a nicely centered chuck causing the whole rack thing to weeble-wobble and shake around with each turn.
I'd like to straighten that thing out. How should I approach the problem?

1:58 - laughable, really. The base, the critical part of this kind of tool, is fragile and extremely breakable while imparting dangerous wobble to your drill bit's operation. 'Well-built'? Shill.
