Just had one of these come into the shop with the same issue, turns out the idler bracket was loose! I removed the fuel tank (4 bolts) and tightened the nut behind the steering column, good as new! Good quick fix, although I wouldn't recommend heating a spring because it'll lose its strength!
Great video Tarly as your videos are great for the back yard lawman. As for heating the spring red hot, take and dip in cold water, and it will bring back the tension strength.
Always check your adjustments on a regular basis. Watch for wear on your parts. If you find your mounting hardware is worn or if you notice notches going beyond the factory made notch, you will have problems such as he stated. Craftsman riding mowers have problems where the belt tensioner bracket can actually get hung up due to wear. It's all about maintenance and noticing things before they get too bad. Noisy bearings, loose sloppy steering due to bad bushings. A riding mower is subject to dirt abrasion and dust. Wet grass can lead to rusted parts and corroded parts. Every year, you should removed your deck and go through each and every part looking for unusual wear. It's cheaper to fix an issue before it gets to the point your belts fall off or start slipping.
If you are referring to the lever that the tension spring (he shortened) is attached to, it's made that way. I have the Troybilt LTX-1842 and it looks just like the lever on the one in his video.
Hey would that be the same for the rear end belt bc I just recently put a new one on mine it barley pulls in 123 after them gears it’s a tank so am thinking I don’t have enough tension on my new belt
Nice quick fix. Thinking outside the box again. I fixed a friends deck spring with a rear drum brake spring from a car until I got the correct part, improvise overcome and adapt. Keep posting the great content.
I guess no one answered you. No he doesn’t, it’s a pair of fake teeth you can buy. Seen plenty of them at the store when I was a kid. No idea why he’s using them, that would bother me lol
I got a similar problem... The deck is in highest setting, if I lower it at all it starts to scalp the lawn. Can you make a short and simple video like this one, on this subject (btw, its a snapper). Thanks, Hoss.
Not an issue for me. Just about every mower I've used I liked the cut level in the highest position. Now I have a neighbour that likes his at putting green height.
Ken Hilson my neither but at 3” and doesn’t know where the property line is. It was very annoying as he mowed the hillside between us and would scalp the whole thing and it looked awful. I just told him I’ll mow that whole wide for you. Haven’t had any issues since.
I'll never understand why anybody wants to waste their time cutting the top off the grass! The whole idea is cut the stuff down. Oh wait a minute.....townies don't have yards.....you're like Hank Hill...you have 'lawns' and mower wars with the neighbors. I don't have time for that foolishness, dial in at '2' and let the grass fly.
@@mark-wn5ek I've read that it's best for healthy grass growth to remove the top 1/3 of it. Besides sitting on the mower is my thinking about everything time. Townie? I cut my own 1/2 acre plus the county road allowance spanning 3 properties and a 5 hour cut at my church. Mind you I've reduced the church cut to almost half . I pull a gang of mowers to get a 7 ft width. To each their own.
This works on MTD 46" too. Lowering deck reduces spring tension, under the variable threshold then main drive belt slips into smoke! Belt dress can help regain good rubber/steel friction too. Clean it if dirty. There your dessert...
Any suggestions? My jd 17 horse mower acts as though the valves are off ,hard to turn over especially warm. I have tried to set valves at least 3 times. Now engine locks up when shut down. Is the gap too small or too large?
I have a Husky LT1538 circa 2003 and I can't figure out how to adjust the deck belt. All the videos say to loosen the slotted cable mount and pull it back but mine is not slotted. Is bending the spring the way to adjust mine?
Taryl please do a video on buying v belts for sit down mower the belts dont match the belt. 1 first belt ordered b-85 but measured 88.25 2nd belt ordered b82 measured 84.5 3rd belt ordered b 81 measured 83.25 I extended my belt measuring DEMCO v belt measuring gauge and extended it 10 inches to measure the longer belts and that's what I found, I also measured on outside diameter with 1/2 Stanely power lock tape measure also, the decks have little adj and I also tried the red link belt and the stretch is too great for craftsman gt5000 deck there only good for a fan belt water pump not mower deck . If you go into bearing shop you can measure them but prices are 3-4 times higher NOW DO YOU ORDER BELTS????????????????
Dear Friends. Please, help. My left (Driver side. The one with the adjustment gear) of the deck is high. The right side (passenger side. grass outlet side) is low. When lever is on position 4, i.e. the second highest, the right side of the deck scrapes the grass! The gear is all the way up. I.e "Driver side" of the deck is all the way down, but still too high. Do I need a new deck? New tractor? Thanks in advance.
Okay question. My grandma goes through lawn mowers like crazy. She always has the same two problems. The belt always falls off no matter what we do to it or it catches fire. How do I grandma proof her lawn mower? 😅😅
Hi Terrell, I have a 1987 John Deere mower that makes a loud screech/squeal when the mower blades are turned on at first then it stops is there anyway to fix why it is doing that
I have a 2013 troybilt pony. Belt keeps coming off. There is so much slack in belt when released no idea how it stays on. My blade release is on the side next to deck height arm. On my mower spring is attached to cable. Thought about getting shorter belt if possible
Hey I have a pony Troy Bilt and my tension spring came off while I was changing my belts. To the deck and was wondering if you could help me out. It's different from the one in the video
This video so confusing bc it doesn’t even look like the spring that leads to the cable, and it doesn’t even look like it’s attached to the deck. Looks like its above it. I have a t1600 and I adjusted the tensioner and I have a new belt that is the right size and it’s still loose. I have no clue what to do
@Taryl Fixes All The mower I have is a 2017 Troy Bilt Bronco. Is the spring that needs shortened the one connected to the PTO cable? Model#: 13WX78BS011
Funny, my blades actually stop turning when I lower the deck past 4, even on the driveway. New belt, PTO cable, nothing interfering with the belt and no change. Maybe this will work.
Taryl I have a 1998 craftman 1000 that use to have kohler twin but now has an opposed briggs how do I wire it so I don't burn out the charging system and can still use the key switch ? got it for free so the price was right .Your the best I have seen on youtube or anywhere for that matter so please help me Sir ! Thank you
i have this on a john deere sabre when i engage the electric pto, on the lower levels of cut it really drops the speed of the deck right out. I will have to check it out and see what i can do
Does That go for a Craftsman lawn Tractor too?? Mine dose the same thing on 3. The only different is. It comes off the pulley!! .. Anyway. I named it Christen! Because. It seems like something goes Wong with it every week!!
I wish more repairmen were like you, Taryl. The ones in my area are: I'll just replace all these parts and you gimme your $$$. People usually just abandon their stuff and never come back for it.
I had a chainsaw they told me couldn't get some parts of but wanted to charge me for the parts they did replace. One of the parts they couldn't get was the clutch that keeps the chain from spinning at idle! Yeah, they kept that chainsaw.
The spring didn't get longer so what's the actual problem. Band aids are ok for a quick fix but I don't take equipment to a "pro" for a quick fix I want it fixed correct.
My Yard Machine was working fine. Once I replace the deck belt , I saw white smoke coming from the engine pulley. It spins while the engine is engaged and disengage. What could cause it to just spin now?
for a long time I thought those where your real teeth, lol I love your videos, taught me how to adjust my values on my motor, story to long to tell about my lawn mower ha, .. QUESTION__on a troy bilt zero turn, would that spring happen to be on top of the deck, my blade will not kick on after I reverse, if I shut the blade off and back on pull the PTO blade will not turn, try it again on the way to put it up lol and it might kick on??
What if the belt falls off when you don't have the blades engaged? The belt is fine when cutting, but slips off when not in use and I have to keep putting back on. PIA! Thanks!
I have a craftsman t210 with the same problem it's a bit lose when not engaged and I have the right belt for it, it slips from time to time. I and I try to follow your fix but it doesn't have two spring loops.
Hey teryl I hav a craftsman LT 1000 doing same thing will that work on it to you know the spring connects to a cable and the pulley thanks let me know please
But Taryl you changed the molecular sub structure of the metal spring by heating it cherry red... no, now wait a minute its not the space shuttle, so its ok! LOL
Thanks for these 'quickies', and thanks to you I am gaining the confidence to work on my power equipment, latest was to replace the head gasket on my Craftsman 2000. So far so good, no extra parts left over and it is still running!
My belt keeps jumping off my deck once I disengage my blades. Suggestions? It’s the 2016 craftsman t1000 same build as a mtd and Troy Bilt seven speed series
Just had one of these come into the shop with the same issue, turns out the idler bracket was loose!
I removed the fuel tank (4 bolts) and tightened the nut behind the steering column, good as new!
Good quick fix, although I wouldn't recommend heating a spring because it'll lose its strength!
That was geniusly elegant.
DAMN!!!
Your suggestion worked perfectly on my JD X350 42 inch deck😂
Human ingenuity is limitless
Great job fixing a problem but, not long enough to get a Taryl fix!
Do you have a how to video on how to replace the drive belts on that exact machine? Love your videos
Your Videos are Awesome n Helpful
Yall are funny I love to laugh love his videos
Enjoy your videos
Very infomative
Excellent
As always, Taryl's brain saves the day!
Will pick up a propane torch in the coming days !! 👍
Great video Tarly as your videos are great for the back yard lawman. As for heating the spring red hot, take and dip in cold water, and it will bring back the tension strength.
That should work on my recliner springs to. It's easier than losing ten pounds.

The lever on the tractor looked bent if you were to straighten it it would not want to pull against the hitch pin as bad either.
If you are referring to the lever that the tension spring (he shortened) is attached to, it's made that way. I have the Troybilt LTX-1842 and it looks just like the lever on the one in his video.
Pffft! all you had to do was shorten the staimafratzen or lengthen the knudler strut!
my lt3000 uses a cable and spring. the cables keep breaking. first it was age, second was cheap plastic the metal handle ripped thru.
I like these little short clips as well as the ones on Sunday's can't get enough of Taryl Fixes All
Taryl, and Steve's small engine saloon, are the 2 guys with the knowledge, and are real.
Mustie1, Bruce Pender, Zippo Varga are also Amazing guys with a plethora of knowledge
Got to be the ugliest riding mower made. Nice tip Taryl!
Hey would that be the same for the rear end belt bc I just recently put a new one on mine it barley pulls in 123 after them gears it’s a tank so am thinking I don’t have enough tension on my new belt
No intro skit? Great resource.
Blade brake not working?
"This was filed in front of a live audience"
Nice quick fix. Thinking outside the box again. I fixed a friends deck spring with a rear drum brake spring from a car until I got the correct part, improvise overcome and adapt. Keep posting the great content.
Do you Really Look Like That Bruh??

I think may you got a ROTOTILLER deck by mistake, but I'm no expert.I'll bet my lunch money Taryl knows.

keep it on the high side for healthy lawn , more time to drink beer i mean mow!

yeah but what's blet size
Whoooooooooooo Hoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!
John Deere e110 mower deck belt keeps jumping off please help me
The best fix for belt drive riding mowers is to haul them into the scrap yard, and get a hydro unit. Those cheap-ass belt drive machines are junk.
depending on the size of your lawn it might be cheaper for a lawn service
Any suggestions? My jd 17 horse mower acts as though the valves are off ,hard to turn over especially warm. I have tried to set valves at least 3 times. Now engine locks up when shut down. Is the gap too small or too large?
Hard valve = lock engine.
@@JodBronson not sure what you are saying???

When is the new fall episode of Blademan and Trottle??
On the old MTD's it was the other way around. The belt would wear out and would have little tension at the high settings!!! LOL
Not sure they can hear him nxt door, can you speak up please! 😂
Great video btw, very helpful 👍
Taryl, you are cooler than Ric Flair or as cool as Cool Hand Luke!
On my craftsman t110 the spring is actuated by a cable. Any help on this fix for that system?
I'm so tired of joke videos. Can anyone just deliver a straightforward how to video without making a joke out of it ?
My stepdad has one of those troy-bilts its always broken and a pain in the ass to fix. Typical troy-bilt. Peace of shit.
How do i tighten it when it's loose when the blades aren't engaged?
Woo hoooo!!!!! Mid-week Taryl fixes are darn near good as ice cold beer!! Thanks guys!🍺🍺🍺😍

The spring got weaker over time. So the "correct'' fix would be to replace the spring with a new one of the same length as the original.
It’s a POS lawn mower, not the friggin space shuttle - so shaddup, hand him a 20 and go cut your damn grass.
