WOW, That was so easy to change, i thought I would have to bring to a lawn mower shop to have it done. It took me an hour to change it. I'm 11 years old and changed it by myself. So if an 11 year old can do it, anyone can do it. Keep up the good work man.

Thank you Taryl. I have just replaced those belts and the steering shaft. Thanks to your other videos I learned that I could roll the tractor onto its side to get access to the stupid Philips head screw under the steering shaft. I cut it off with a grinder. I don't have the strength to lift the mower so I took a piece of 4x2" pine 7' long, screwed it to the running board with a roofing screw and used it as a lever to roll the machine. Worked perfectly. Now I just have to put the deck back on with the new deck belt and blades and I am done.
BTW, I had to cut the shaft so I could drop it out of the upper bushing (not really a bushing it's just a hole in the plastic console) and then I had to hack up the console with an all-purpose tool to make a hole large enough to drop the new shaft in from the top. I used epoxy putty to reinforce the hacked up console. I dropped the deck as I figured it would give better access to the shaft screw and for blade replacement.
OH. I don't have an air hammer so I used a regular hammer - took quite a while but the engine pulley eventually came off. I am now thinking that if I put a blunt rod in my old hammer drill it might do the same job. Anyone tried this idea?

after changing all three belts, i started cutting tall grass (on an MTD Yard Machines 12.5 B&S 28T707) the blades would eventually stop, then rev back up again, then stop, then rev back up...this continued until I figured out that the throttle (plate that has the white thingy on it wasn't opening the throttle all the way, so I pushed it with my finger and eventually it started revving higher (the engine), once the engine kicked into this higher throttle setting, it cut like hell. My question is, is that normal? I need to buy a whole new throttle plate because the white plastic thingy is partially melted and causes issues with max throttle settings. What do you guys think.. I'm at a loss. By the way, it's a Model 13AH660F352 MTD Yard Machines - single piston L-head or whatever they're called.

@@dabneyoffermein595 Making comments and inquiries on a 7 year old video just won't do. no one but a lurker like me will see it, and it's just the wrong place to ask because you can't post photos and it's just not the best place. I'd suggest joining one of the many small engine/lawnmower/outdoor power equipment forums. That is where all the information is.

I owe you an apology. Last week I commented that the silly presentation might be a turn-off to somebody wanting knowledge and answers for their mower or equipment problems. After watching (and "Liking") several of your videos, I have learned A LOT about maintenance and repair of my MTD mower. Slightly entertaining yet HIGHLY informative and educational. Comedy is selective, yet information is universal. Thank You for schooling me on my mower. I'll try to learn to laugh at the other stuff. Well done!

Good video easy to follow and well explained. One thing having used this to do the job. I hope you have the air tools. I could not even get the rusty bolt on the front pulley to budge never mind pull the assembly down. I suspect given the vintage of these things that would be the case with most everybody. If you are just the handy homeowner with a decent set of hand tools you will be SOL. Unless you do it the wrong way! This guy will tell you himself that what follows is the wrong way, but if you find yourself in this position feel free to read on.
The reason you have to pull that pulley down is to clear the belt by three retaining tabs. You can bend the tabs out of the way and get the belt out. If you go this route DO NOT pry on the pulleys to bend the tabs. Your pulley will bend before the tabs yield and you don't want that! You will have to use pliers and muscle. Once the tabs are out of the way you will need slack on the other end to work the belt out of the tight space. Luckily the center pulley assembly is easy to remove, just a snap ring and washer. Once the new belt is on you can bend the tabs back Mine aren't perfectly straight but that belt is never falling out.

    • @reallyrarestuff
      @reallyrarestuff Рік тому +1

Another way to get the belt off the motor pulley that's easier than bending the tabs is to loosen the engine mount bolts and slide the engine left or right, opening the gap between the pulley and the tabs.

+Taryl Fixes All...You know, it makes me very happy that I see a father and his two sons have a good time making a videos that teaches people how to work on outdoor power equipment.
As far as I can tell here on UA-cam, you are the only one that uses his own sons to do this. I really liked the video where you grabbed Ronny and dragged him backwards then took a dummy and threw it over a fence. You could tell the dummy was a dummy but that was what added the fun to it ^_^ Such little things as that really makes me want to watch your videos and I know after watching said videos, such as this one, I will know just a little more about outdoor power equipment repair. Thank you sir.

I replaced the drive belts on mine today for the 1st time. I also greased the needle bearings, replaced the air filter, sharpened the blades and checked the spindle bearings. The hardest part for me was getting those 2 bolts back in the reverse/forward gear selector man what a pain LOL The drive pully on mine was also stubborn but a pry bar and a gear puller combined got it off, sure was wishing I had an air hammer like yours. Now I need to change the oil and do a few other little things and she will be ready for the mowing season. Thanks man I dont know what the shop would charge for doing this but whatever it was you saved me the much $

thnx for showing the belt with the numbers. I bought a Montgomery ward tractor ;like this for$50 because the guy who had it said the top belt was always jumping off amd wouldn't run right. well after taking the drive belt off here it was the wrong belt it was way to long. reason why I bought it was it had a snow plow on it. but had no mower which I dint need as I have 2 cubs with mowers! the center pully ws frozen too which after working on it got it working too.

An alternative to the two bolts in the wheel well for the shifter is to go down through the bottom. There is one bolt that connects the shifter to the transaxle, and it's very easy to get to when the mower is jacked up. Remove that one bolt and the belt can come down and the new one can go in.

Hi Taryl nice video! I sort of had an idea but your video cleared up some details. I can only say that MTD has some of the worst design going. Instead of having one lever for PTO engage and another for deck height, these knuckleheads made an all-in-one lever which is useless. The blades barely stop when you need them to and the blades barely spin when trying to use the damn thing. This has nothing to do with this video. For this video the hard part was getting the shift lever bracket back on which requires you to be in 2 places at one time. I decided to use a stick to get the front hole aligned then was able to get the back screw in. From there take the stick out and align the front part of the bracket with the hole and get the screw in. Maybe 1st graders design for MTD but that would be insulting to first graders and my apologies to them in advance ( the first graders ).

I also did that having the wrong socket on the front pulley bolt which was not close tolerance enough, and rounded the corners off the seized bolt. I had to use an Irwin socket made for grabbing rounded bolt heads to finally get it off. I ordered another bolt from Sears Parts Direct which has lower prices on everything. I made sure that bolt got coated with anti seize compound before I put it back on.

Check underside of the hood for part numbers for belts and filters. Mine has a decal. The data plate for the mower is on underside of the seat.

To remove the belts, after taking a picture of the routing of the belts, just cut the old belts off. as you take off each belt note the number, you will still have to remove the bracket, loosen/remove the guides to put the new belts on. I used a big gear puller to remove the front pulley to a point where the gear puller could not reach. Then under the starter there is a hole. Used a gigantic screwdriver and a rubber mallet to bang the pully all the way off. Quite possible to completely remove the pulley through the hole under the starter. If I was going to do it that way I would remove the starter and cover. Do not forget to remove/disconnect the battery. I found out my deck prop shafts have frozen up. This was a free tractor and I believe it sat for a while under a tarp.
