Most Street Fighter fans know Chun could never match Bison in a one-on-one fight. Perhaps she could train with Rose and master Soul Power.
I had a lot of fun re-watching it. When I was a kid we talked about it because Vega swears and Chun was just in the shower, but looking at it through more mature eyes it's super well put together and the stakes are really high. I think it's Chun's greatest fight.
It's a shame how Chun-Li been treated in the Street Fighter story she's more involved in the stories than Ryu but how they portray her in games is sad she's the first lady of fighting games and self proclaimed the "Strongest Woman In The World" but they make her like she's not capable of doing things of her own I hope she get the justice she deserves in 6 and future installments especially since she's a martial arts master now.
Almost every capcom fighting characters lacks depth, Chun Li is no different. I feel SNK and NetherRealm put more time in developing stories for their main characters. Even some of their side characters have more stories than Street Fighter characters. Capcom just don't care much about story element. Look at Guile as well no character development for a very long time.

I have no problem with Chun Li getting her down to her feet and portrayed her like a hapless Frodo because the enemy is more powerful than her but SFV pretty much miscasted her chance to take down Shadowloo.

The SF5 story was garbage from the start, but yes, Chun Li has always been this disrespected me-too-guys! squeaky wheel. Strongest woman in the world, international detective/cop. Never does anything of importance in any story. Capcom in general has always half-assed the SF story, either by design or by lack of creativity. They have zero decent ideas for how to handle their own cast of characters. They screwed with their own roster in the 1994 SF live action movie. None of the games really attempted to link the characters until SF4. Only the animated movies made attempts and only 1 of them mostly succeeded (the first one). The SF4 story had some potential but is still paper thin with the most generic anime sequences. The SF5 story is a piss-poor joke that tries to merge hastily scribbled static panels with a collection of contrived character path-crossings, dumb dialog, zero weight, and a stupid chess-piece gimmick. And the thing is, in many ways I prefer the SF universe over a competitor's like MK. But the MK teams have always understood storytelling (however bad a given game in the series was), whereas Capcom could care less about that and gave the SF fanbase crap when they bothered to try. Capcom didn't produce a gameplay movie or mildly coherent story that involved most of their characters until over 2 decades after SF2 came out.
One time Chun Li was coming out of a store and saw a little boy crying. She said "don't cry little boy, you can become anything you want if you believe!" and then she gave him $100. "Thanks!" said the boy "now I'm going to pursue my dream!" and that boy grew up to become Shigeru Miyamoto.
It was honestly retarded they had the player play as BISON, the fucking villain, in that Chun Li vs Bison match in SF 5. It's like they forgot the good guys are supposed to win.
Ok one thing you need to understand about characters is they don't all need to follow the same path. Chun Li does not need an inner struggle. Her path about being a cop and a teacher is perfect. It just needs a few tweaks.
And the real irony is she was the reason character of main villain M.Bison and Shadaloo organization was created. To give her a reason to be in the SF tournament. According to Akiman(character creator) that they "wanted Street Fighter II to be more entertaining than its predecessor. That also helps explain how Chun-Li came to be. Having a female character in the game completely changes the game's dynamic, *she brightens up the entire palette. We needed a reason for her to fight, and so an evil empire [of M. Bison] came to mind. "* He also said: "To be honest, I spent some time worrying about putting *Chun-Li, the heroine*, into such a plain setting. Ordinarily, you don't see women participating in global martial arts tournaments." And what happened after that? as long as her character was needed they did justice to her character. And when she was no longer needed, they completely ruined *the heroine* 😒. Fans want her to be in SF3, they(one more time) give her a story, make her strong, let her beat Urin and all that, but that was it. After that it was all about ryu ryu ryu and ryu. No one else, not even Ken. They did her so dirty that I as a fan stopped watching any video related to her from Capcom. If only they had given her a better story in SF5, a little better 😒. Don't know what they're going to do to her in SF6. And to be honest after SF5 I really don't care.
I completely agree. It is disappointing watching your favorite character getting beat up or rescued way too often. I wish Capcom treat her legacy with more respect for SF6.
Excellent review about Chun-Li's entire story, including her origins. But I find it really hilarious for how you called M.Bison, "Michael Bison," instead of "Master Bison," as that's what the actual abbreviation of M stood for as his full name in the Eng version of SF. Michael Bison or Mike Bison was Balrog's actual name for the original Japanese version, when Capcom were exporting SF2 to the US and other countries. In the 90s, USA Capcom were deeply concerned for any lawsuit from the former famous boxer: Mike Tyson. Which was why Capcom of America had to switch names for the bosses characters.
Some details you forgot to mention.. Juri got the upper hand coz chun li got distracted by the crying kid. But they are evenly matched before that. In the trailer juri got the upper hand again coz chun li got distracted by the helicopter.. Chun Li always needs to be distracted. LOL. Rashid won coz chun li was obviously still hurt after her fight with bison. My problem with capcom is they always use her to make the new characters instantly popular. C. Viper / Juri / Rashid for example. I’m guessing the new character who’s like a female fang will be her rival again.
Juri was dominant even before Chun got distracted. She was easily blocking the kicks and grappled Chun so she could whisper in her ear. The trailers aren't canon so why bring it up? Chun-Li lost to Birdie in SFV btw. She was never strong in canon, the "strongest woman in the world" line is a self proclaimed title, she never earned it.

The trailer is just an another example of her getting distracted from a fight. Regarding the fight with birdie, He needs to shine in his own story. Chun Li already beat him before in Alpha Series. Karin lost to birdie also in that story. Birdie may look stupid but He’s definitely not weak. He’s hired by Shadaloo, so meaning they acknowledge his capabilities. I read a SFIV Canon Story.. He’s Tier 5 in that list same tier as Adon, Balrog, Cammy, Zangief, T. Hawk, Dhalsim, Alex and Eagle. It is even stated that Birdie is powerful enough to stop the Dolls assault on him using whole train parts (this says much about his raw strength) Canon or not the “strongest woman in the world” will be a label forever attached to her.. that doesn’t mean Chun Li can’t be defeated, she is no Ryu, Ingrid or Rose.

I mean this company basically has the Wonder Woman of fighting games in their pocket and yet still have no idea what to do with her 😕. 5 definitely could've handled her better with how she doesn't get to do much outside her fight with f.a.n.g(who already got thrashed by a pissed rashid wanting revenge for his friend being melted/a doll nearly dropping him in an engine.) as she does rush into battle too much(not z fighter levels of dumb over reliance on power titles but definitely a noticeable flaw compared to other street fighter women that could arguably be viewed as "stronger" and seemed to be intended as her big flaw in the alpha games.). and feels some parts of it could've been handled better like gen(actually for it's flaws like them meeting in street fighter vs. darkstalkers one more time instead of a lame death to akuma in 5,though did like his last words haunting akuma with taunting.),4 as a whole(a lot of that game felt like filler for some characters,glorifying the new characters or it at the last second was put before 3 with that short.) or fighting m. bison with/before ryu. as i love chun li in the animated movie with how she helped stop shadaloo foreshadowing her strength throughout(just wish we saw her meet ryu & ken/helped them fight m. bison but realistically made sense and was still a badass fight beating the daylights out of vega through a wall/throwing an entire couch at him.) and protecting her adoptive children from urien. that honestly to me is more the main character than either ryu(almost like a battle couple with how much they've been in crossovers despite no romantic moments at all just her admiring him in early works/enjoying their company.) or guile and could handle the character interactions better as for 6 i'd love to see more of her training li fen and defend her title properly against g & gill/whatever other threat is in the game.
Or maybe she is SF's Gohan? She only cared about becoming stronger to avenge her father, then to bring Bison to justice. Other than that, she doesn't seem to care about titles or even about fighting. Myself? I have nothing against her being a reluctant fighter and returning back to her hard earned, peaceful life once everything is over. 2 of Tekken 8's brand new characters are BUDDHA (as in the BUDDHA from history aka 3rd eyes/enlightenment/nirvana dude) & JAREKO. BUDDHA is a brand new MISHIMA character & he will also act as THE ORIGIN to why the mishimas have electricity power in them & also how the electric god fist came to be. The way Buddha fights will of course be very graceful & poetic in his movements which reflects who he is as a person. And yes, Buddha is pretty much a top tier character in tekken 8. Jareko will be a character using the krav maga martial arts. He will be the first ever HYBRID grappler character in tekken. :P OOPS. So sorry for 1 of the major spoilers.... HAHAHAHAH :P
finally someone who spoke about the inconsistent history that chun li has, despite the title she has she is often defeated either by her own bad decisions or because she had to be the helpless princess to be saved at that moment, in perspective c-viper is a version of what chun li should be, a strong woman with judgment and insight who makes smarter decisions more often than dumb ones, jury has gained the popularity she has because she is basically a dark version of chun li who also makes better decisions and that as far as I remember in its history has only 2 critical defeats. Chun Li is one of the most misused characters in stories because everything she does does not reflect her title or even her profession. I hope to see her shine in the next title.
When I was a child, I loved playing Street Fighter 2 as Chun li, and she remained my main years later at Street Fighter 4. I never paid attention to the story modes. Well, it's sad to see that she's been done dirty like this, but I'm not surprised. Japanese men aren't ones to know how to write female characters.
They don't want her to outshine any of the men. Final Fantasy 7 doesn't shy away from letting the likes of Tifa have the spotlight and beating some ass, I think it's time Capcom does the same for Chun

The way i see, other titles in the francise let it slightly open, but overal you can work chun-li story in a somewhat favorable light as they're pretty ambiguous. The one that really did Chun-Li dirty (or so to say) is SFV, with it's train wreck of epic proportions story mode. You're putting to much emphasis on to a title. Everyone respects Chun-li as the strongest woman and has proven time and again how capable she is both in and out of gameplay and story. Feats such as defeating Bison and Gen are not as simple as you portrayed them in your explanation. On top of that even the other heros in the story lean on each other in order to improved, get stronger, and survive. Best example is the relationship between Guile and Nash that you placed in comparison. The two were like brothers as well as a student and mentor. When they interact with Chun about "not going alone" was a reminder that not even the Strongest Woman is invincible. While the idea of Guile stopping Chun from helping Nash was a point to several validations on this. Nash didn't beat Bison, he died in that fight and failed when Bison got back up again. On top of this, Nash was consumed by a hate that Guile new he couldn't help Nash with and had to let him go into that fight. To call her a Damsel in distress is also false, as despite losing fights the closest she comes to death has nothing to do with her being captured or forced into a weakened position. Her rescues normally come in from her working solo and expending so much energy to survive in the first place. To further state why this comes off as a weak discussion. She is being moved to a mentor role, which isn't an easy one. Taking her life experiences this can create plenty of drama for her and Lei Fen. Where she can have to struggle with a more maternal relationship with her or finding herself in a supportive role for the new character. Chun has always been legendary and to measure her power through a win rate when power scaling always becomes an issue in combat story line with supernatural abilities Chun Li has more character and a stronger story than most female characters even today.

Fighting game girl herself, with a prestige that not many characters could ever have, and we're putting as much emphasis on the title as much as the series itself does (which is alot), and in that sense, this "strongest woman" credibility really leaves alot to be desired. Fang? Lmao. Having Chun li rely on team work is one thing, but they even fucked her over in that too, giving the W to Ryu. RYU. Which was never his fight. So this teamwork thing is moot because I guess the writers never really intented to narratively reward her anyways. And she is ABSOLUTELY a damsel in distress, she jobs out a concerning number of times, forced into a weak position and has to be saved or else she dies, that's a damsel moment, it ain't rocket science. She can move on being a mentor I guess but not without a bitter taste in many's mouth.

If we were to remove the female aspect then the title would in fact be just that a title. 2)yes, it sucks that sf5 retcons who actually defeats Bison in the end, but let's face it. A lot of the story gets retconned making a lot of inconsistencies. Fighting game stories are built that way in a number of ways. Look at Tekken and everything surrounding Jun Kazama (and the Kazama bloodline). How ever as Bison does die a multiple occasions, and on top of that interpol/ the U.S. Air Force aren't going to mark down "Civilian in White Gi" as the actual hero, Chun of course is given credit as she is head of the Anit-Shadoloo case. 3) the L's she does take are either in relation to story or plot progression. If you want to say she was done Filthy, I've got bad news. She was set up to fail from the beginning. As one of the three big faces of SF (Ryu, Ken, Chun) out of the three Ken and Chun are the three with the biggest presence that having her being beaten doesn't end the story. If it was Ken, yes Ryu might take action but Chun is busy with Shadoloo and in no way worried about S.I.N. If Ryu loses to Juri...well that's that, they get the data needed for the Hado and the ultimate weapon is now in S.I.N's hands. Bare in mind we can technically say the same about Ken losing how ever apperantly since Ken can be considered having an incomplete version of the Hado (since he doesn't go so far as to be corrupted by it) it makes sense they would want Ryu. Meaning between the three, to gain/set threat levels Chun is the most likely targeted. As she is recognized as being the strong and having a presence in global defense (with or without beating Bison). If you have little respect for her because she loses that's on you. Most of the time someone beats her, the person is nearly inhuman. Bison, Juri, etc. If L's matter than the ones who give it to her matter as well. Chun Li is the strongest woman, with loads of life experience that should be passed on to the next gen of characters coming in. Ryu should be there as well to help newer fighters understand the darkness that comes from looking for power. Point is, you can say it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth but I say it's fine as the series itself can still recognize her as the legend she is...and not what ever the hell that live action garbage of a film was claiming she was. She has been on deaths door, survived and continued to fight regardless of the odds, she didn't just say "damn I suck" she kept fighting. yes again the retcon robbed her but again fighting game stories be like that in the worst of times.

My favorite video game character of all time. But it was very disapointing how among one of the most popular video game characters of all time yet capcom right out did her so wrong in SFV. It's one thing if she's beaten by Bison though I'm not a fan of that either. But when she was beaten by Rishid (yeah she still recovering from her loss from Bison) But then for her to be beaten by Birdie of all people you don't get much more insulting then that. I'm not sure I like the story of her basically being on the bad side in SF6, cause i think she would think of the/her children before her devotion to justice. But they really need to start showing the girl some respect.
Honestly, most of the problems with the handling of Chun-Li are post SF IV. She was treated a lot better in the media before SF IV, such as the badass fight scene in the SF II animated movie. With SF IV, first they made her look bad to hype up the newcomer Juri at the time, then there was that awful storymode in SF 5 that basically made her look weaker than ever. I think the writer of the SSFIV OVA and the SF 5 story is the same. I honestly think this guy hates Chun-Li and has it out for her. It's ridiculous how badly she is treated. But you do have good ideas here and Chun-Li has potential to be shown for greater things. I just don't really trust Capcom's writing team anymore.
Not really a fan on your last idea there. The fanbase will still shit on it simply because "oh women always side with stupid things" and being fooled by her ideological sense of justice just to turn "bad" here wouldn't help her character one bit. Good summary! Not really important but since you always call her "Chun". Her name is still spelled in older romanizations. There are two recommended methods today: 1) With syllabification: Chun-li (not capitalize the L) 2) Without syllabification: Chunli So her given name is Chunli, not just Chun. Her surname is unknown.
No need to fix, because Street Fighter's story in general has been full of holes, errors, barebones, and retcons since Alpha 1. The only solution is to give the franchise the RE-treatment and remake everything to improve and flesh-out the whole lore.

I would like to correct you, her roles though the game is as it should be, if she was too over powered than she would be another Ray Skywalker and it would make her boring, her slow development into a stronger fighter makes her a more interesting character, at some point they can make her the pivotal character in one of the games, at that point she can kick ass and take names. Before then, she’s a support character so making her too strong wouldn’t be smart.
A good support character can still have badass moments though and not just get their ass beat and saved constantly. Support character =/= damsel in distress. With your logic, no character except for the main character should be tough. So what's the point in Guile winning any fights? Why doesn't Ryu just come in and do everything/save everyone himself?
Chun is basically Street Fighter's Vegeta. #2 to the poster child, acknowledged to be strong as shit, but loses just about every fight anyway.

Capcom in general has always half-assed the SF story, either by design or by lack of creativity. They have zero decent ideas for how to handle their own cast of characters. They screwed with their own roster in the 1994 SF live action movie.
None of the games really attempted to link the characters until SF4. Only the animated movies made attempts and only 1 of them mostly succeeded (the first one). The SF4 story had some potential but is still paper thin with the most generic anime sequences. The SF5 story is a piss-poor joke that tries to merge hastily scribbled static panels with a collection of contrived character path-crossings, dumb dialog, zero weight, and a stupid chess-piece gimmick.
And the thing is, in many ways I prefer the SF universe over a competitor's like MK. But the MK teams have always understood storytelling (however bad a given game in the series was), whereas Capcom could care less about that and gave the SF fanbase crap when they bothered to try. Capcom didn't produce a gameplay movie or mildly coherent story that involved most of their characters until over 2 decades after SF2 came out.
That idea you had for her in 6 is going to be 10 times better than whatever they end up giving her in the game.

Ok one thing you need to understand about characters is they don't all need to follow the same path. Chun Li does not need an inner struggle. Her path about being a cop and a teacher is perfect. It just needs a few tweaks.

And the real irony is she was the reason character of main villain M.Bison and Shadaloo organization was created. To give her a reason to be in the SF tournament.

Having a female character in the game completely changes the game's dynamic, *she brightens up the entire palette. We needed a reason for her to fight, and so an evil empire [of M. Bison] came to mind. "* He also said: "To be honest, I spent some time worrying about putting *Chun-Li, the heroine*, into such a plain setting. Ordinarily, you don't see women participating in global martial arts tournaments."
And what happened after that? as long as her character was needed they did justice to her character. And when she was no longer needed, they completely ruined *the heroine* 😒. Fans want her to be in SF3, they(one more time) give her a story, make her strong, let her beat Urin and all that, but that was it. After that it was all about ryu ryu ryu and ryu. No one else, not even Ken.
They did her so dirty that I as a fan stopped watching any video related to her from Capcom. If only they had given her a better story in SF5, a little better 😒.

Excellent review about Chun-Li's entire story, including her origins. But I find it really hilarious for how you called M.Bison, "Michael Bison," instead of "Master Bison," as that's what the actual abbreviation of M stood for as his full name in the Eng version of SF.
Michael Bison or Mike Bison was Balrog's actual name for the original Japanese version, when Capcom were exporting SF2 to the US and other countries. In the 90s, USA Capcom were deeply concerned for any lawsuit from the former famous boxer: Mike Tyson. Which was why Capcom of America had to switch names for the bosses characters.

My problem with capcom is they always use her to make the new characters instantly popular. C. Viper / Juri / Rashid for example. I’m guessing the new character who’s like a female fang will be her rival again.

5 definitely could've handled her better with how she doesn't get to do much outside her fight with f.a.n.g(who already got thrashed by a pissed rashid wanting revenge for his friend being melted/a doll nearly dropping him in an engine.) as she does rush into battle too much(not z fighter levels of dumb over reliance on power titles but definitely a noticeable flaw compared to other street fighter women that could arguably be viewed as "stronger" and seemed to be intended as her big flaw in the alpha games.).

as i love chun li in the animated movie with how she helped stop shadaloo foreshadowing her strength throughout(just wish we saw her meet ryu & ken/helped them fight m. bison but realistically made sense and was still a badass fight beating the daylights out of vega through a wall/throwing an entire couch at him.) and protecting her adoptive children from urien.
that honestly to me is more the main character than either ryu(almost like a battle couple with how much they've been in crossovers despite no romantic moments at all just her admiring him in early works/enjoying their company.) or guile and could handle the character interactions better as for 6 i'd love to see more of her training li fen and defend her title properly against g & gill/whatever other threat is in the game.
Or maybe she is SF's Gohan? She only cared about becoming stronger to avenge her father, then to bring Bison to justice. Other than that, she doesn't seem to care about titles or even about fighting.

2 of Tekken 8's brand new characters are BUDDHA (as in the BUDDHA from history aka 3rd eyes/enlightenment/nirvana dude) & JAREKO. BUDDHA is a brand new MISHIMA character & he will also act as THE ORIGIN to why the mishimas have electricity power in them & also how the electric god fist came to be. The way Buddha fights will of course be very graceful & poetic in his movements which reflects who he is as a person. And yes, Buddha is pretty much a top tier character in tekken 8.
Jareko will be a character using the krav maga martial arts. He will be the first ever HYBRID grappler character in tekken. :P OOPS. So sorry for 1 of the major spoilers.... HAHAHAHAH :P

finally someone who spoke about the inconsistent history that chun li has, despite the title she has she is often defeated either by her own bad decisions or because she had to be the helpless princess to be saved at that moment, in perspective c-viper is a version of what chun li should be, a strong woman with judgment and insight who makes smarter decisions more often than dumb ones, jury has gained the popularity she has because she is basically a dark version of chun li who also makes better decisions and that as far as I remember in its history has only 2 critical defeats. Chun Li is one of the most misused characters in stories because everything she does does not reflect her title or even her profession. I hope to see her shine in the next title.

Well, it's sad to see that she's been done dirty like this, but I'm not surprised. Japanese men aren't ones to know how to write female characters.

The way i see, other titles in the francise let it slightly open, but overal you can work chun-li story in a somewhat favorable light as they're pretty ambiguous.
The one that really did Chun-Li dirty (or so to say) is SFV, with it's train wreck of epic proportions story mode.

You're putting to much emphasis on to a title. Everyone respects Chun-li as the strongest woman and has proven time and again how capable she is both in and out of gameplay and story. Feats such as defeating Bison and Gen are not as simple as you portrayed them in your explanation. On top of that even the other heros in the story lean on each other in order to improved, get stronger, and survive. Best example is the relationship between Guile and Nash that you placed in comparison. The two were like brothers as well as a student and mentor. When they interact with Chun about "not going alone" was a reminder that not even the Strongest Woman is invincible. While the idea of Guile stopping Chun from helping Nash was a point to several validations on this. Nash didn't beat Bison, he died in that fight and failed when Bison got back up again. On top of this, Nash was consumed by a hate that Guile new he couldn't help Nash with and had to let him go into that fight.
To call her a Damsel in distress is also false, as despite losing fights the closest she comes to death has nothing to do with her being captured or forced into a weakened position. Her rescues normally come in from her working solo and expending so much energy to survive in the first place.
To further state why this comes off as a weak discussion. She is being moved to a mentor role, which isn't an easy one. Taking her life experiences this can create plenty of drama for her and Lei Fen. Where she can have to struggle with a more maternal relationship with her or finding herself in a supportive role for the new character. Chun has always been legendary and to measure her power through a win rate when power scaling always becomes an issue in combat story line with supernatural abilities Chun Li has more character and a stronger story than most female characters even today.

Fighting game girl herself, with a prestige that not many characters could ever have, and we're putting as much emphasis on the title as much as the series itself does (which is alot), and in that sense, this "strongest woman" credibility really leaves alot to be desired. 1) as far as titles go, Chun Li is the strongest Female. Not the strongest in the world. If we were to remove the female aspect then the title would in fact be just that a title.
2)yes, it sucks that sf5 retcons who actually defeats Bison in the end, but let's face it. A lot of the story gets retconned making a lot of inconsistencies. Fighting game stories are built that way in a number of ways. Look at Tekken and everything surrounding Jun Kazama (and the Kazama bloodline). How ever as Bison does die a multiple occasions, and on top of that interpol/ the U.S. Air Force aren't going to mark down "Civilian in White Gi" as the actual hero, Chun of course is given credit as she is head of the Anit-Shadoloo case.
3) the L's she does take are either in relation to story or plot progression. If you want to say she was done Filthy, I've got bad news. She was set up to fail from the beginning. As one of the three big faces of SF (Ryu, Ken, Chun) out of the three Ken and Chun are the three with the biggest presence that having her being beaten doesn't end the story. If it was Ken, yes Ryu might take action but Chun is busy with Shadoloo and in no way worried about S.I.N. If Ryu loses to Juri...well that's that, they get the data needed for the Hado and the ultimate weapon is now in S.I.N's hands. Bare in mind we can technically say the same about Ken losing how ever apperantly since Ken can be considered having an incomplete version of the Hado (since he doesn't go so far as to be corrupted by it) it makes sense they would want Ryu. Meaning between the three, to gain/set threat levels Chun is the most likely targeted. As she is recognized as being the strong and having a presence in global defense (with or without beating Bison).
If you have little respect for her because she loses that's on you. Most of the time someone beats her, the person is nearly inhuman. Bison, Juri, etc. If L's matter than the ones who give it to her matter as well. Chun Li is the strongest woman, with loads of life experience that should be passed on to the next gen of characters coming in. Ryu should be there as well to help newer fighters understand the darkness that comes from looking for power. Point is, you can say it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth but I say it's fine as the series itself can still recognize her as the legend she is...and not what ever the hell that live action garbage of a film was claiming she was. She has been on deaths door, survived and continued to fight regardless of the odds, she didn't just say "damn I suck" she kept fighting.

My favorite video game character of all time. But it was very disapointing how among one of the most popular video game characters of all time yet capcom right out did her so wrong in SFV. It's one thing if she's beaten by Bison though I'm not a fan of that either. But when she was beaten by Rishid (yeah she still recovering from her loss from Bison) But then for her to be beaten by Birdie of all people you don't get much more insulting then that. I'm not sure I like the story of her basically being on the bad side in SF6, cause i think she would think of the/her children before her devotion to justice. Honestly, most of the problems with the handling of Chun-Li are post SF IV. She was treated a lot better in the media before SF IV, such as the badass fight scene in the SF II animated movie.
With SF IV, first they made her look bad to hype up the newcomer Juri at the time, then there was that awful storymode in SF 5 that basically made her look weaker than ever. I think the writer of the SSFIV OVA and the SF 5 story is the same. I honestly think this guy hates Chun-Li and has it out for her. It's ridiculous how badly she is treated.
But you do have good ideas here and Chun-Li has potential to be shown for greater things. I just don't really trust Capcom's writing team anymore.

Good summary! Not really important but since you always call her "Chun". Her name is still spelled in older romanizations. There are two recommended methods today:
1) With syllabification: Chun-li (not capitalize the L)
2) Without syllabification: Chunli
So her given name is Chunli, not just Chun. Her surname is unknown.
No need to fix, because Street Fighter's story in general has been full of holes, errors, barebones, and retcons since Alpha 1.
The only solution is to give the franchise the RE-treatment and remake everything to improve and flesh-out the whole lore.

I would like to correct you, her roles though the game is as it should be, if she was too over powered than she would be another Ray Skywalker and it would make her boring, her slow development into a stronger fighter makes her a more interesting character, at some point they can make her the pivotal character in one of the games, at that point she can kick ass and take names. Before then, she’s a support character so making her too strong wouldn’t be smart.
A good support character can still have badass moments though and not just get their ass beat and saved constantly. Support character =/= damsel in distress.
With your logic, no character except for the main character should be tough. So what's the point in Guile winning any fights? Why doesn't Ryu just come in and do everything/save everyone himself?
