hi Kenny! Thanks again for all your well made videos. I totally dig it its very helpful for me. Following this video, I am wondering if it is possible to have a setup where the individual MIDI tracks are also receiving a seperate output from the INSTRUMENT? For example: I would like to load only one DRUM instrument that has multiple outputs. I also want seperate MIDI tracks to contain the information of the beat I am making. Hi Kenny. I'm trying to do the same thing with Session Drummer 3. How can I filter four non-correlative notes on my Hats MIDI track? I have already checked that I add four JS note filter, when I filter note 22 to 22, in the following note filter the 42, and the following the 44 and the next 46, will only filter the 22. Thus, it seems that you can not use more than one scrip of Note Filter per string FX. Thank you for exposing things so clearly. Greetings.
This is a very intuitive video so thanks very much Keny. I have a question for you. Can we achieve the same result with another multi vsti plugin, i.e like FL Studio Multi Vsti or even with Ableton Live? I would appreciate it if you can do a video on either platform to show the same effect. Many thanks.
Is there a way to trigger two notes from 1 hit? In my drum software I have the snare sound and a trigger sound (I load anoter snare sound with more bass in it) and together sounds killer but cannot trigger both at the same time since they are in different keys (D1 and D1#), is there a MIDI FX (or chain) that allows me to trigger both notes?. Thanks in advance.
Why use this template set up? I set mine up like that and it worked as described. One thing I noticed, each drum on its own track but the track panel controls, volume, pan, etc are not in operation. Raise the snare volume up or down does nothing. I realize volume etc can be controlled in the AD2 drum interface. I guess the only use for this template set up is to be able to record each instrument on its own track. Kinda odd, first you split drums apart then you bring then back together.
Is there a way to apply filters for different ranges of midi notes that skips unneeded ones? I have an Alessis DM 10 kit and using EzDrummer 3 and the hi hat looks to have a massive range in midi notes it could be and if i setup the way i have the kick and snare, then i'm going to be pulling in a crap tonne of other notes that i dont want. The only other option i see would be for me to change all the midi notes in EZDrummer to the relevant drums, which if i could i'd rather avoid as it looks like it'd be a pain in the arse to get right
Hi Kenny - watching this and im still having trouble recording the midi output from one track to another. I have pre-recorded midi and an arpeggiator plugin on one track and i want the arpeggiated output recorded somehow - as midi. Of course i can render audio but i want the arpeggio recorded as notes. I know i can record in real time by playing notes on keyboard and having the arpeggiator as input FX....but... i want some pre-recorded midi files to trigger the arpeggiator and record the result as midi.
Help!! I followed this step by step and it worked flawlessly for the kick. I went to add the snare and now for some reason I can’t get the data byte value in Midi Examiner. It won’t register anything when I hit the snare but I have sound. So frustrating
Great video...just one question...how can you add effects afterwards (post)? I tried adding within the chain pre and on the track and neither way worked??
You can't add audio FX to MIDI tracks. This video will help you separate each drum so you can process their audio output: www.kennymania.com/separate-drum-software-outputs/
Hi Kenny, thank you so much for these videos, they're brilliant. With this one though I'm using superior drummer and everything seems to go to plan until I open the midi examiner plugin, the drums are not triggering anything in that plugin when I click on them. The sounds are still coming through track 1 though... is there anything I should be setting up differently before starting this tutorial? Cheers!
Kenny, thanks for this video. It was a much different way to separate out the individual midi instruments than the automatic way MT Power Drums does for you. I did this for every one of my drum types, but then I couldn't figure out how to pan them left or right using the pan controls in the tracks for each instrument. Do you have any advice on where to go to fade one of these drums left or right? Is there no way to do that in Reaper's track interface with your setup?
@@timothygoodman942 I wish I could tell you but I have come so far since this comment, losing a PC to hardware failure and becoming much more experienced with Reaper, that I can't recall. It's been a while since I played with midi, though. Thank you for asking.
Now I've set it up as described, how do I add an effect, say reverb, to a single drum track. So, I just want to add some reverb to the kick only. For some reason, if I add an effect to an individual drum track the effect doesn't do anything.
Your videos are some of the best! Can this be done with an electronic kit? I did go through what this video instructs and I never could get the MIDI examiner to show me the MIDI drum note being played. I'm sure the answer has something to do with how Reaper is set up in my use but I haven't found it yet. Any ideas where I should look?
Excellent tutorial!. I have an issue where there is a short delay when I hit my Samplepad while recording thru an USB cable to my laptop in Reaper. I can't figure out what I need to check to avoid that.
You are the man in Reaper! quick question. how do i add effects to individual midi tracks in this setup? i tried to add delay on my side stick but i know its not setup up right. Thanks!
This is my issue as well! Managed to get every drum element on a separate midi track but putting fx on any track other than the main track (which runs all the drums) doesn't have any effect. I guess maybe there's a way to reroute each individual track to a separate fx track...? I will experiment with this but I don't really know what I'm doing lol so help would be much appreciated, thanks!
Hi Kenny, Thanks for teaching this, it's awesome!! I understand how to route each drum now, but is there a way to see the output of each drum on its own track meter? Or can you only see the output on the parent track? Also, can you control each individual tracks volume from the individual sliders in Reaper or do you have to do that from the midi editor? I understand that the overall volume will be controlled from the parent track. Thanks again! This is a big help.
I have the same request regarding volume control in the mixer. I guess I could do volume control in the "parent" track containing all the samples, but if the fader could do it, that would be nice. I have a Novation Impulse 49 with pads programmed for the midi inputs. So alternatively, I'll try to "learn" the volume controls in the ReaSamplomatic for each fader. Another fantastic video Kenny. This has kept me busy and experimenting for weeks now :)
This is good stuff. Just getting started with a TD30-KV and the edge of the hat seems to be sending to 26. I can see the ability to let CC events ass through, so that's awesome, but how can I filter 26 AND 42-46?
Well, this is separating MIDI notes, not each part of a drum VSt. What I would do is record your performance on one track with one instance of the drum plugin, explode the midi performance by note to separate tracks, delete the original track to which you have the plugin put into, add the plugin to each track you separated out from the original track, and lastly freaze the tracks so they become audio tracks.
I'm having problems converting the individual drum midi files into audio. A Render/Freeze warning keeps popping up. Has anyone else experienced this or have any advice?
Hey Kenny, when I insert an fx in the kick track for example it doesn't affect the kick, or when I move the fader in the snare for example doesn't change the volume, why and how do I do to apply a compressor for example only in the kick during the mix? Thanks a lot for your videos.
Odd. I have the same situation. Everything works as Kenny shows, but each track"s volume and pan faders dont work! Any success getting them to workk?? I saw the other post about fx not working on each track as well but I haven"t gotten that far. HELP, anyone!
Can you now show me how to do this with Logic Pro? I got a Roland TD-11 electronic kit. Its sounds are great but al pads are recorded to one track. No good.
This video is amazing dude, but any idea what to do when your channels overlap? Eg: I have a Roland TD-6V kit, and the floor tom uses 41/43, but 42 is one of the hi-hat notes. What do you do each pad's channel range overlaps? I tried having multiple MIDI filters, but that doesn't work (which makes sense now I think about it!)
Hi James, I am facing the same issue and am wondering if you have found a solution for it. Is there any way to add e.g. 41 and 43 as comma separated notes to a track instead of a range?
Hello, I'm having an issue with this method. I'm literally doing everything you say step by step and I have no luck. When I send the "Kick" track to the EZDrummer 2 track, it says that EZD2 receives the other track but there is no sound when I arm the "kick" track and unarm EZD2. Please help me out if you can, this is driving me nuts. I understand sends but it just won't work for me for this particular method.
Do you have monitoring turned on? it is the button between "IN" and input effects on the track. It looks like a speaker from side view, If it is on it will be a closed shape, if it is off it will be an open shape.
Hey kenny, quick question! whenever I input an FX into the midi "child" track (for example kick) it doesn't recognize it. I've put an EQ and it does not work, it does not trigger, how can i fix it?
This is very helpful but theres a key info missing: in the range of toms there are cymbals too. and cymbals are also all over the place on the piano roll. how do i make a track with ONLY toms and another with ONLY cymbals? Thanks!
The best solution I downloaded was TW_MIDI_NoteFilter.jsfx Google it and see post from Time Waster at 03-28-2019, 11:08 PM for link. Place the downloaded file in Reaper Resources/Effects (I also created a sub-folder called Custom for mine). Open the FX Browser, right click the top panel and choose Scan for New Plugins. Now, when you search All Plugins for midi filter, it should show as JS: MIDI Note Filter - TW.

Hi Reaper. Followed this excellent tutorial, but can't get the "MIDI Note Filter" or "MIDI Examiner" to work. They load ok, but don't show what note is being played on the MT Power Drumkit plugi, or block whatever note you tell it to. Any ideas?
Hi there, quick question for you: I get audio input into Reaper from my Roland TD17 drum kit, but I can't get MIDI (the tracks still appear as sounds waves rather than MIDI 'dots' no matter how much I alter with the settings). Any ideas, or is there a way I can contact you to troubleshoot this? I'd really appreciate it!
Not sure what I am doing wrong, I am following the steps to the letter and can't even get audio to send to the kick track I created to send to the master drum channel.
Rather than multiply you processor workload, set up a channel with the VST/FX you require and SEND the track(s) to it. Therefore you can use the same channel to process as many instruments you require. As shown in this example the Master FX is doing the job for the whole kit.
@@Mudge07 but what if i want to EQ each drum separately? compression? using this method i can't EQ bass drum separately and that the main reason went thru this lesson. sorry i'm new to this.
So I’m facing this issue with an Alesis Nitro Mesh kit. I ended up making my hi hat have 3 channels (open, closed, pedal) and assigning the MIDI note for each note to the input channel. So if open house hat was “46”, I’d punch in 46.
hey there ive been using reaper for only a few months now when i try to alter my midi drums in one specific spot it alters all of the drums in that lane further down the track how do i get this to stop
cou jean Agree, this is a drawback. The workaround is to filter them on separate tracks then route or group them to one track. It's a shame that they didn't implement such an obvious requirement as the ability to select non-sequential note combinations.
Ok this is great, but what if you’re writing drums in the MIDI viewer itself (no kit, just using mouse to create midi notes)? Is there a way to write them all in one MIDI track and then send them out individually like this? …or maybe this works for that. I’m at work so not around Reaper to try.
Whenever I have a question when using Reaper, no matter how specific it is, there is a tutorial from Kenny! Thank you so much!!!

Why am I getting a weird “phaser” sound when I use the cymbals on the routed tracks, but not on the parent track?
Hello,
I'm having an issue with this method.
It looks like a speaker from side view, If it is on it will be a closed shape, if it is off it will be an open shape.
thx @@RFXCasey this worked for me as well!!
This does not seem to work for the SSD5 free version, or maybe the rules have changed in 2020 for Reaper.
Thanks!
Yes, I've been thinking that too and I'm investigating it today.
The best solution I downloaded was TW_MIDI_NoteFilter.jsfx
Google it and see post from Time Waster at 03-28-2019, 11:08 PM for link.

My detailed update keeps getting deleted. But, here is the short version: The best solution I found was TW_MIDI_NoteFilter.jsfx. Sorry I am unable to add the helpful instructions I'd put together.
Hi Reaper.
Followed this excellent tutorial, but can't get the "MIDI Note Filter" or "MIDI Examiner" to work. They load ok, but don't show what note is being played on the MT Power Drumkit plugi, or block whatever note you tell it to.
Any ideas?
Are you seeing MIDI come in on that track?
Hi there, quick question for you: I get audio input into Reaper from my Roland TD17 drum kit, but I can't get MIDI (the tracks still appear as sounds waves rather than MIDI 'dots' no matter how much I alter with the settings). Any ideas, or is there a way I can contact you to troubleshoot this? I'd really appreciate it!
Not sure what I am doing wrong, I am following the steps to the letter and can't even get audio to send to the kick track I created to send to the master drum channel.
Now how do i put different VSTs on each separate drum?
Rather than multiply you processor workload, set up a channel with the VST/FX you require and SEND the track(s) to it. Therefore you can use the same channel to process as many instruments you require. As shown in this example the Master FX is doing the job for the whole kit.
@@Mudge07 but what if i want to EQ each drum separately? compression? using this method i can't EQ bass drum separately and that the main reason went thru this lesson. sorry i'm new to this.
What if there are toms in between hi hat keys on your plugin setup?
YES! I'm facing the same problem here!!! T.T
So I’m facing this issue with an Alesis Nitro Mesh kit. I ended up making my hi hat have 3 channels (open, closed, pedal) and assigning the MIDI note for each note to the input channel.
So if open house hat was “46”, I’d punch in 46.
thanks!
hey there ive been using reaper for only a few months now when i try to alter my midi drums in one specific spot it alters all of the drums in that lane further down the track how do i get this to stop
Did u extend the midi item? It it then looped... you need to split it first and then do changes.
is the midi filter plugin integrated in reaper or i need to download it ? thanks
its in reaper yea
Hi Kenny how can i filter if my cymbals are let say on 42-44-46?otherwise the toms on 43-45 will play.
Thank's
cou jean Agree, this is a drawback. The workaround is to filter them on separate tracks then route or group them to one track. It's a shame that they didn't implement such an obvious requirement as the ability to select non-sequential note combinations.
This is the same problem I ran into, and I agree that there should be a way to customize the notes so that they can be filtered non-sequentially.
check out the baterry plugin from NI ... you can put a different drum sample in slots separetely.
Whenever I duplicate the track and try to use the midi examiner to figure out what any other drum is, it doesn't pick it up. Any ideas?
Definitely Legend 👑👑👑, But what about Processing?
Great video, but my toms are on an other place then yours, mine are the white keys where the HiHat is? on 74 till 81 is nothing
If I already have my midi drum track all written out on one track, how can i separate them like this? Or do I have to reprogram them?
I'm actually making that video tonight. Stay tuned and subscribe.
REAPER Mania what good luck for me then!
Ok this is great, but what if you’re writing drums in the MIDI viewer itself (no kit, just using mouse to create midi notes)? Is there a way to write them all in one MIDI track and then send them out individually like this? …or maybe this works for that. I’m at work so not around Reaper to try.
Oh you may have answered that already, by selecting all and viewing in one midi field the same goal can be achieved.
