There is a magnet that holds the pot and heating element together, but you need enough weight and for the pot to not get too hot. That's how it works for rice: when the water evaporates, the pot and magnet get hotter and the magnet weakens, so it flips to warm to not burn the rice. Clamping the button down is a nice workaround if you're going to pay close attention, but it's not built to stay well above 100C for very long
I used my standard oven cake recipe. It worked fine but took 3 white rice cycles. It tastes like a mix between steamed pudding and cake. Get a medium priced bing lee cooker with different settings to save the hassle of it turning off. I also sprayed the bowl for cake even though it’s non stick
Kmart has mini versions of the rice cooker and also a mini airfryer and mini grill and mini waffle maker. Very little power draw, doesn’t need much space and perfect for 1 person meals. They work really well. The mini rice cooker is also great for oats, noodles and for scrambled eggs 😊
I wanted the mini rice cooker so bad, it looked so cute haha! But they didnt have it at the KMart I was at 😞 But damn I didn't realise they had all these other things, I'm going to have to make some room for all these new gadgets!! 😂 Thanks so much for the tips!! 🙏🙏

Hi, I have just seen your videos for the first time today and I find them very enjoyable. Van life, cooking in a van, travelling, art and conservation are all things I love. A big thumbs up and a new subscriber from me. I also find your videography easy on the eye. It wont be long and you will have a big following. Thanks for sharing.
: ) WOW ! THANKS MUCH for sharing and I have had a rice cooker forever, since my daughters had insisted I get one as Mr Mom : ) They LOVE their rice, but never thought of your recipe and casseroles ? : ) ALL the BEST and Cheers from Upper Left USA ! : )
Thanks for the video! I, took love my rice cooker! I always thought it was a one-hit wonder (I like multitaskers) but then I discovered rice cooker recipes. Game changer! I regularly make rice pilaf by adding tomatoes, chopped onions, herbs and dry veggie soup stock (Vegeta) in with the rice and water. When it's cooked, I add some feta cheese, stir, and have a fancy side dish for dinner. I've also made rice with chicken (I've used tofu instead, too), chopped veggies (chard, broccoli, carrots, etc), soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, sesame oil, and a dash of sugar. (I added the sauce components to the rice and water and put the protein and veggies on top, not stirred in.) It is a really quick, hands-off lunch that's delicious and filling. We aren't full-time travelers (right now) but if we go back on the road next June, the rice cooker is coming with me. :-)
Hi there, i have an off grid lifestyle so have tried all the different ways of cooking. Love my Kmart rice cooker, youtube has some gr8 recipes to follow. I have tried heaps. My fav is simply special fried rice for one: 1/2 cup rice ( let soak for 30 mins then rinse ) Place in bottom of rice cooker. Then in a clock formation around edge place the following: aprox 1/2 cup amounts - frozen peas - fine chopped carrot - chopped spring onion - fresh or canned corn - diced red / green capsicum - diced ham , torizo, or some canned tuna / pink salmon - soy sauce, sesame oil, oyster sauce - 1 cup chicken stock / broth - get a tomato remove core and cut skin on top , place tomato in middle of all the veg. Set cooking, when it stops / pops, remove skin on tomato and chop up. - in a mug beat 1 large or 2 small eggs and pour over all the cooked rice and veg mix. Place lid back on and wait 5 mins. Chop egg into rice/ veg mix and stir thru. Serve and enjoy.....yummy You can play with ingredients to suit yourself.... Takes about 30 mins to cook and ready to eat. Cheers Rick PS - to add i place a folded up tea towel over steam hole in lid to catch the steam so you dont get moisture over everything..... just a little tip..😁👍
Recipes for rice cookers unlimited in Pinterest, I would put a section of paper towel under the lid to catch the moisture drops. You could always add dry fruit and nuts to vary the taste of your cake. This would be great for widows we have cooked large meals the nest is empty now I am going to try a lot of these rice cooker recipes.
I bought myself a mini one for when camping, love it baking bacon and eggs, making porridge, cakes etc... i took a piece of gorilla tape to strap it down when it pops up. Only 200 watts! You can even make popcorn in it. Line it with baking paper. Like you did your cake! Love your channel ❤
Oooh how exciting, new toys. Some lovely creations you've made here, especially Ur beautiful artwork. U really r living Ur best life and its wonderful to see
Kmart rice cookers are just as good as expensive ones. I love mine. If ever it doesn't work, make sure the bowl is baclanced properly. I'm going to try your risotto, didnt know you could cook other things in it. thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the feedback, yes I think I agree! I have been able to also make gnocci in it and cook potatoes for mash whilst steaming vegies on top. It's been such a huge game changer for me 😃 You are very welcome, I'm glad the video has been helpful to you 🤗
I didn't read many comments so may ben repeating here. The Anko only goes for about 12 minutes and then switches to keep warm mode, it is made to cook rice, thats it. When you want to cook longer do this - when it switches to keep warm mode - turn it off at the wall or unplug. turn back on and turn the switch to Cook again. You can keep repeating until your food is cooked. Good luck and enjoy :)
Another thing put a paper towel over the top. then put the lid on the paper towel so the extra liquid doesn't fall into your cake. there are times like soups/ stews you don't mind the extra liquid going in. I just found your channel
Thank you for making this I have been waiting to see what you would make in a rice cooker i love using mine at home but its great too see that ill be able to take mine on the road with me. I cannt Waite to see what other healthy food you will make. The juicer is an awsome idea as well bring on the watermelon slushies
Have you seen the Itaki range, they are Japanese and stainless steel cooking surfaces, low wattage so won't drain the battery. Just Google them, they are sold online. I have a friend who is a gourmet cook and she loves hers and ended up buying the whole range.
The weight needs to be in the rice cooker. When it has water and rice the weight scale in the machine tells it let’s cook as the water evaporates the rice becomes lighter and it knows to switch to stay warm so you need to put a little bit of weight somehow in the middle of the cake mix to keep it on cock. Hope this helps ✌️❤️.
Thanks so much, it's hard picking what music to use so I appreciate the positive feedback! I now list the songs I use at the end of my descirptions if you wanted to find it ☺
When the rice cooker reaches a certain temperature it will turn to keep warm, it has nothing to do with weight, you need to let it cool down a bit to set it to cook mode again. The rice cooker is very versatile, you can make a grill cheese sandwich in it. But put a towel under the lid to catch the condensation so it doesn’t get soggy. You can pan fry things in it too, just remember to use the towel trick to catch the condensation so it won’t splatter. If you like potstickers, you can add a bit of oil to the inner pot, add the frozen dumplings along with about 1/4 cup of water and press cook. Leave it until it turns to warm mode and you’ve got crispy dumplings to eat.
I believe that your cooker kept going to warm because of temperature. My understanding is that the temperature at the bottom of the cooker determines the cook mode and since your cake is dense, it was probably holding more heat than grains would. It would cook through just fine on warm it would just take a little longer. First time viewer and enjoyed to video :)
My number one used appliance in my Campervan is my Dash mini rice cooker. I've been full time for almost 3 years and I've made so many cozy meals in it. I have the whole fleet of mini appliances by Dash in here 😂
ooo this is interesting. I've had a pressure cooker that was multi, in that it did slow cooking, saute, steaming, as well as rice cooking. When using to make rice, I've only ever used it for making a stash of pre-cooked PLAIN rice which I can then heat up later in a m/wave or something. NOW, I'm going to use my pressure cooker / rice cooker bit for not just plain rice! Who knew? I've subscribed. About your cake, couldn't you have used the rice cooker's pot as your mixing dish? And choccy cake with cream or custard is all good too.

@@reconadventures9257 I actually just saw a tiktok on a new mini airfryer at KMart! Thanks so much for letting us know the power draw down, I think this will be my next purchase 😂
How rice cookers work. Take out the pot, see the big plate and button inside, ok. The temp that water boils at is a known factor soooo. As long as there is water in there, the temp will not rise above 100c or whatever, BUT! as soon as it does, the " RICE " cooker knows that all the water is gone and the rice is ready [ FREAKIN' GENIUS ], so then it switches to WARM. Notes 1. you need enough weight to depress the big button and with water and rice plus LID, this is no problem. 2, You should keep the lid on as much as possible and 3. When you load all the ingredients and are ready to COOK, rotate the pot a quarter or half turn to ensure it is sitting flat on the heating element [ plate ] and the sensor - [ button ]. You can cook anything you want on warm if you like. The electric rice cooker was invented in the 40's or 50's by the Japanese and is great. Kiddo, read the instructions..... Now you know why it flips to WARM etc.
The cake mix may be gluten free, but check at the end of the ingredients to find out if they use bioengineered ingredients in their product. I believe that most Betty Crocker cake mixes do use them.
Oooooo I was actually trying to see if there were any stainless steel ones because I don't really like using things with that non-stick stuff on it. Could you please tell me what brand you are using? Thank you!!🙏🙏🙏
In the US the Instant Pot comes in different sizes so you can purchase one that would draw less electric from your solar power. The Instant Pot also has different settings such as saute, making yogurt, beans casseroles You can set it and forget it. You wouldn't have to worry about holding anything down to keep it turned on. “Once the rice absorbs all the water in the pan, the temperature will start to rise. The rice cooker senses this change and will either switch off or switch to a warming cycle. At this point, the rice has finished cooking and entered the resting stage.” I never knew you could cook more things than just rice! 🎉

Great video. I travel in a tiny camper and also babysit my battery. I use a HotLogic mini as a slow cooker - 45 watts. It is wonderful. For the rice cooker, a couple of hacks to mimic the weight of water (which is why it shuts off) is to place a plate on the top with a paper towel to absorb condensation . Also you can wedge something in the switch to keep it on cook mode.
Our planet is globally slipping into a health crisis that is going to rock humanity. Thing is eating decently, living life in a healthy way, this is achievable to everyone. If you buy organic, consume in ways that result in metabolic health then happy days! You seem to be metabolically healthy ma'am and in this regard you are a Outlier. But the outliers are important, by that term I mean humans that have chosen to change lifestyle to achieve metabolic health. Industrial foods is the problem. Industrial cooking techniques. Awesome, you found the rice cooker useful in the van, definitely going to use one when I decide to bite the bullet. Been inspired by your videos for a while and want to do the something similar as an artist on the go rather than being anchored at my home studio, I noticed you were standing up while working on your artwork in the commuter (that's right yea?). If you don't mind me asking what's your height? and are you happy and comfy enough or should I be looking at high roof van?
Oh I'm so glad the videos are being helpful to you! I say we create an artist van train around Australia 😁 I am 171cm I think, taking out the headlining over the sink area has been so damn good, but I am starting to think more long term now and looking at going higher. I do find myself hunching over a lot, I would definately consider going higher if you plan on working inside the van ☺
And you said you didn’t like cooking! I reckon if there was a Master Chef competition for contestants to cook on 1000 watt inverters, you’d be a shoe in!!
Maybe along the lines of channel 7’s My Kitchen Rules, …. I've got that rice cooker but never knew it did more than rice... thankyou. I may have to take it in my van. Random unrelated to the video question... how wide is your van? I currently have a single bed down one side and 'kitchen' area on the other side the sliding door is on. I'd prefer my bed across the back like yours but I'd have to lay diagonally a bit as my van is 150cm across internally. I am a side sleeper though. Do you lay diagonally?
I'm so glad this video has given you some inspiration for meal ideas☺ So as the Hiace curves on the sides as it goes higher it does depend at what height you place your bed. Mine is 77cm high and the length is 171cm, which is my exact height so my feet do touch the end if I stretch out, but I'm a curled up side sleeper so it doesnt worry me too much. I originally had it length ways down the van but as you say it does give you a lot more room with it the way I have it now. Hope this helps!🤗
@@eucalyptdesigns great! thankyou for those tips. I have a Toyota townace so it's a fair bit smaller than a hiace. I too am looking for more floor space but I think the rear bed idea needs more thought for me.
Amazon sells SMALL rice cookers that have significantly less draw than the one you bought off the shelf. They also hold far less food, but that's a good thing when you live in a vehicle by yourself. Your rice cooker isn't staying in cook mode because, apparently, you don't have LifePo batteries that are designed to work with modern electronics and not to cycle the way other batteries do. (This is an assumption based on what I know about batteries and since I've never watched one of you videos before, I don't know the details of your system.) If you do have a LifePo battery, then my next guess would be that you don't have enough power (see my first comment for that). I don't know where you got that "not enough weight" idea from, but I cannot begin to fathom why that would have an impact on whether or not a kitchen appliance actually works correctly or not. I've never seen any kitchen appliance that won't work when it's completely empty, even if there's no reason to run it that way. Anyhow, I hope that helps you fix the problem. I was really hesitant about rice cookers until I started seeing what people were doing with them, but now it's on my Amazon list to add to my own rig. Good to know about baking as well! That I didn't know and it's always good to know different ways to bake. 🙂 The pumpkin risotto looked like it would be yummy as well. As for gluten-free baking, it's really not that hard to make your own mixes and then you can control all of the ingredients yourself and not use pre-packaged food that clearly states just how genetically modified it is on the box (about as close as they'll get to a warning label). I highly recommend giving it a shot. I"m sure you will be pleasantly surprised and you will save money as well. If you find a recipe for g-f flour and you don't like it, simply play around with the ingredients until you find one you do like. There are many grains that are less commonly used that will easily fill the void of wheat in baked goods. Cheers!
Wow nice picture, very talented lass , it might of been better to get a stainless steel bowl in the rice cooker , all none stick causes PFOA , not good for health at all.

Thanks so much, from others feedback it sounds like a rice cooker needs water in it to cook, it turns off when the water is gone because that is normally when the rice is cooked. So I think I need one with more settings to do cakes, thinking I might upgrade because I absolutely love using it! ☺
Slow cookers destroy nutrition, it's diy canned food:((((( I love slow cooked. Rice cookers are used by collage etc students for heaps of stuff, they even made bread in them. Those little KMart etc gas stoves - if you can't cook it on those, it can't be cooked. Give it heat to start, then use a lid and turn it way down for 20 mins.... very economical - keep wind away.

Just an opinion, get a regular stove top pressure cooker, takes less space. Perfect white or brown rice, ribs, chicken, stews, I can go on and on. Super easy, you don’t have to worry about electricity, instant pot is nothing more than a glorified pressure cooker. My goodness seems everything needs to be electric and pre-set these days. There is a magnet that holds the pot and heating element together, but you need enough weight and for the pot to not get too hot. That's how it works for rice: when the water evaporates, the pot and magnet get hotter and the magnet weakens, so it flips to warm to not burn the rice.
Thanks so much for sharing all of this! Now my mouth is watering 😅🙏
Hi Christie! This was my first video for you. What a lovely vibe ☺ and also, I learned some new tricks with a rice cooker as well! Thank you 😍
Oh welcome to the channel! Thanks so much for watching and your positive feedback 🙏🙏🤗
Hi there, i have an off grid lifestyle so have tried all the different ways of cooking.
Love my Kmart rice cooker, youtube has some gr8 recipes to follow. I have tried heaps.
My fav is simply special fried rice for one:
1/2 cup rice ( let soak for 30 mins then rinse )
Place in bottom of rice cooker.
Then in a clock formation around edge place the following: aprox 1/2 cup amounts
- frozen peas
- fine chopped carrot
- chopped spring onion
- fresh or canned corn
- diced red / green capsicum
- diced ham , torizo, or some canned tuna / pink salmon
- soy sauce, sesame oil, oyster sauce
- 1 cup chicken stock / broth
- get a tomato remove core and cut skin on top , place tomato in middle of all the veg.
Serve and enjoy.....yummy
You can play with ingredients to suit yourself....
Takes about 30 mins to cook and ready to eat.
Cheers Rick
PS - to add i place a folded up tea towel over steam hole in lid to catch the steam so you dont get moisture over everything..... just a little tip..😁👍
Oh wow thanks so much for sharing all of this! 🙏 I will definately give this a go! 😃
Thanks so much for sharing this information 🙏 I'm so excited to keep trying new things in it 😃
I bought myself a mini one for when camping, love it baking bacon and eggs, making porridge, cakes etc... i took a piece of gorilla tape to strap it down when it pops up. Only 200 watts! You can even make popcorn in it. Line it with baking paper. Like you did your cake! Love your channel ❤

Hi, meant to say, following you from England 🏴 😊
Oh wow England! Goodness I am reaching global 😅🙌
Wow you are talented! Love the painting xx
Oh thank you so much! ❤🙏
Ahhhh I see, there has been various reasons provided but this makes sense, thank you!!🤗
Another thing put a paper towel over the top. then put the lid on the paper towel so the extra liquid doesn't fall into your cake. there are times like soups/ stews you don't mind the extra liquid going in. I just found your channel
That’s awesome what you can do with a rice cooker!
You can also reheat your leftovers in the rice cooker.
Thank you for making this I have been waiting to see what you would make in a rice cooker i love using mine at home but its great too see that ill be able to take mine on the road with me.
I cannt Waite to see what other healthy food you will make. The juicer is an awsome idea as well bring on the watermelon slushies
OMG watermelon slushies!! That's my summer sorted 😅🙏 You are so welcome, thanks so much for watching!
Have you seen the Itaki range, they are Japanese and stainless steel cooking surfaces, low wattage so won't drain the battery. Just Google them, they are sold online. I have a friend who is a gourmet cook and she loves hers and ended up buying the whole range.
Thanks so much for this 🙏🙏I'm Googling them now!
I have an Instant Pot. It cooks rice well. Rice cookers are very versatile as well. Glad you are having fun with your rice cooker.
Thanks so much for sharing 🙏 I will have to investigate these insta pots more, they have been suggested a few times so must be worth the look! ☺
@@andyhallbootdoctornz3991 thanks so much for this information! 🙏
Fabulous! I just bought a new rice cooker for the van 😎 New sub!
Welcome! Thanks so much for subscribing and following along my van life journey 🤗
I love the instant pot.
Yes someone else just mentioned this one, I'm Googling it now 😃🙏🙏
Once you cook it, the cooker turns into warm mode, hence you cannot start cook, until a certain time when it cools off. All rice cooker are like this.
Thanks so much for this information! 🙏
I like your video. Got to copy it
I like the music this started off with.
My goodness thank you so much for all this information! It certainly is versatile, it may become my one cooking device! 😅
Thanks so much for sharing this 🙏 You're right, it does seem to still cook OK on warm. Thanks so much for the positive feedback 🤗
With a rice maker, you can make breads as well. I love that USB charged blender. Thanks for sharing this awesome video. Namaste!
My number one used appliance in my Campervan is my Dash mini rice cooker. I've been full time for almost 3 years and I've made so many cozy meals in it. I have the whole fleet of mini appliances by Dash in here 😂
Oh that's awesome, thanks so much for sharing!🙏
ooo this is interesting.
Thanks so much for sharing, I'm so glad this video has been helpful to you! Haha bang on, I had that though after I made the cake, why didn't i just use the cooker bowl 🤦♀ 😬 Welcome to the channel! 🙏
I went through 4 of those rice cookers constantly returning them after a couple of users each one. So gave up and got a Kambrook. No issues . Great ideas. I didn’t know you could use it for other recipes. Thanks 👍

Haha was going to say it but you did . Eating like a queen. Next try the kmart air fryer I use that in my van and it's pretty quick and doesn't use much battery

@@Vanlifewithdonna-leighperfect mine draws about 135ah at 180⁰ but only for about 20min so I lose about 10% of battery, so that's not to bad .

Thank you for sharing all this information 🙏
The cake mix may be gluten free, but check at the end of the ingredients to find out if they use bioengineered ingredients in their product. I believe that most Betty Crocker cake mixes do use them.
Should be able to turn on cook, it will go to warm when hot. Leave on warm 20-30 minutes. And repeat whole procedure once. Result... perfect cake
I love watching that kind of blogs ✌️🫰😍🤩🥰😘💞🌷
I use a 3-4 cup Stainless steel rice cooker it is small but has heaps of settings that might be helpful
I love Turtles and that's what drew me to your video. Thanks for sharing

“Once the rice absorbs all the water in the pan, the temperature will start to rise. The rice cooker senses this change and will either switch off or switch to a warming cycle. At this point, the rice has finished cooking and entered the resting stage.”

It would be great if you'd film when you cook in the rice cooker and then give us the recipes. There are so few non-Asian rice cooker recipes out there. I've got a few videos to share with you. Also, don't be afraid of the recipes done in a fancy rice cooker You should be able to make them in a cheap one. And be sure to always spray your cooker with a butterish spray. It keeps it from sticking. There is also a silicone round thingy that you can buy that helps with rice and stuff. Great video. I travel in a tiny camper and also babysit my battery. I use a HotLogic mini as a slow cooker - 45 watts. It is wonderful.
I'm so glad this video has given you some inspiration for meal ideas☺
So as the Hiace curves on the sides as it goes higher it does depend at what height you place your bed.
You can bake bread and cake in a slow cooker
Cheers!
Thanks so much for all this information, greatly appreciate you taking the time to help 🙏🙏

@@eucalyptdesigns I ‘ve never used one myself even though I eat lots of rice , I buy the quick stuff you put in a pan , I know lazy me , I really want to start eating brown rice , looking at health information = much better for one’s health , never cooked rice in its raw form , life is for learning, live and learn die and forget it all , if you find a good rice cooker please give me a heads up , take care you = me .
What pencils are those
They are watercolour pencils, I am not using them how an artist would typically use them....but I like to break the rules 😅
What kind of power do you have ?
I have 2 flexi solar panels on roof, an inverter and lithium battery, I can draw 1000W from at one time. I'm not really sure what I'm talking about when it comes to electrical haha, but if you look for my Van Tour video all the equipment is listed in the description ua-cam.com/video/6-NFo31VJSI/v-deo.html . Hope this helps!☺
How much power do you have? 1000 watt hours?
Yes that's right I can only draw up to 1000 watts, does that make sense? I don't really know what I'm talking about when it comes to electrical 😅
Rice cooker requires water to make it on cook mode.
Thanks so much for this! That would make sense why the cake wouldn't stay in cook mode 😬🙏🙏
It's a pressure cooker 😊
You need to put something In The rice cooker it needs weight to activate the cook mode.
Thank you for this feedback 🙏🙏
👍👍
You might have a defective rice cooker. See if you can exchange it.
Thanks so much, from others feedback it sounds like a rice cooker needs water in it to cook, it turns off when the water is gone because that is normally when the rice is cooked. So I think I need one with more settings to do cakes, thinking I might upgrade because I absolutely love using it! ☺
The rice cooker doesn’t pull a lot of power. Small ones use about 200 watts which is very low. Even over 20 minutes that’s only 60 watts.
Thanks so much for sharing this information! 🙏
Rice cooker turns off if there's no fluid left in the bowl
Thanks so much for sharing this information 🙏☺
Slow cookers destroy nutrition, it's diy canned food:((((( I love slow cooked. Rice cookers are used by collage etc students for heaps of stuff, they even made bread in them. Those little KMart etc gas stoves - if you can't cook it on those, it can't be cooked. Give it heat to start, then use a lid and turn it way down for 20 mins.... very economical - keep wind away.
Thanks so much for sharing this ☺
Mate i really am enjoying your videos soooo much ❤ this was lovely to see you treat yourself 🎉🎉🎉 the cake wowwww i love it
Thank you so much for this comment, it really does help me to keep going! Greatly appreciate the support, and yes a bit of cake is a good treat for the soul 😂🙏❤
I absolutely love your art, you’re gifted and thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much! Greatly appreciate the feedback and info 🙏🤗
