I think you may want to spend the first 6 months of your retirement (or before) just visiting around SE Asia before making a final decision Mark. It may not be as expensive as that sounds. I will come out with my annual rankings in a month or so. Stay tuned. While you are waiting, check out my retire cheap reports worldwide. vagabondbuddha.com Thanks for commenting Mark and Happy New Year to you and yours, Dan

Love this place, 50 cent beers and my wife also found a pack of cigarettes in a back street in Phnom Penh for 50 cents. Also recommend Anne’s kitchen in Phnom Penh, fresh cooked meals for $2.50 and cooked perfect every time..

thank you for sharing your videos. I love and miss Kampot. My parents were born there and still go back and retired but my dad had to come back to the state for cancer treatment. I also want to go back to get away from the snow just for winter times. I might go in June to plant some mango seedlings in my property that I bought 4yrs ago. Let me know if you want to tour around Phnom Voar. It located on the border between Kampot and Kep.

We would love to. Probably about 24 months before we end up in Cambodia again though. After we finish the Philippines and Indonesia, we will tour the Americas (N and S) for 1.5 years. We also need to do about 6 months in Eastern Europe and Portugal. Thanks for commenting. Best, Dan

Not sure why but Cambodia appeals to me like smaller towns in Mexico and my wife’s country in Turkey. It’s almost like the people in these less traveled locations the local population still knows how to live and it reminds me to live more honorably and to be more respectful to the local communities. In addition to ngo work...are most expats there retired as in no longer working? Or making a livelihood online? I heard teaching English in Vietnam provides abundant side income...how are expats in Kampot making ends meets? Pensions?

    • @VagabondAwake

Some own businesses, some are on pensions, some have work online, some have investments back home paying their way. Expats are generally very interesting people. Most of them have lived in multiple countries and have odd stories to tell.

Taxes? Cambodia's tax on overseas income (including social security) is a thing and progress up from zero to 20%. Also, health insurance is a much wiser thing when older, as u.s. medicare cannot be applied in a foreign country.

I’ve traveled extensively all over the World and haven’t found anywhere where I could stay long term, guess I like travelling too much!

To stay in Cambodia long term you need to prove a monthly income, you just can't get indefinite extensions on a standard tourist visa.

That is what I heard from a German woman that is retired in Kampot for 6 months of every year (German winters). She said it was much less complicated than the Thailand rules. Please tell us more about your experience. In fact, if you are an expat there in Cambodia, could I interview you for the UA-cam Channel so others can hear your story? Thanks for watching my videos. @@VagabondAwake They have tightened up on visa requirements. After your initial 3 month tourist visa expires you now have to apply to one of the other 4 on offer. Retirement, student, visiting family and a working or studying one, there is no option that i read to attain another standard tourist visa. I hope i'm wrong if not Vietnam will be my next choice after living in Thailand 6 years, this country is going backwards very quickly in a short time and looks like things are going to get worse before they get better.

Visa extensions in Cambodia a really, really easy. On first arrival you don’t get a standard tourist visa, you get the tourist (e) visa. This visa can be extended by 1,3,6 or 12 months. It’s inexpensive and you can basically stay indefinitely. I rank it as the easiest visa system in SE Asia.

@@DavidStanleymusic It's not really how much your salary was but rather what your expenses were before retirement. A $100,000 job after taxes leaves about $72,000 a year take home. If a person were maxing out their 401k and roth ira they would be left with around 50,000 to 55,000 a year. If they pay off a $1000 mortgage p&i before retirement they would need only about $43,000 a year to maintain their lifestyle. Not know your background I don't know where you stand but very few people are lucky enough to have $4800 a month in retirement. Unless you're saying that total includes your spouses retirement funds also.

    Kampote? The worst pronunciarion ever!
Why nust US citizens have weird ways of oronouncing foriegn names.
Why don't they listen to how others say a word?
Kampote? No Cambodian would understand what he meant. When they realised, they would correct the way he says it .
    Try saying it as calmpot.
Meanwhile, he has a very irritating voice as well.
