- At 88, this guest is letting neither his age nor the pandemic slow him down. A country music legend, singer and songwriter Willie Nelson has made two new albums in the past year and has taken part in multiple concerts, benefits and PSAs. His new bestseller, "Letters to America," offers up a dose of advice and hope. Here's Walter Isaacson speaking to Nelson about his activism and why he just can't wait to get on the road again.

Back in the 50s, Willie appeared at a little, small town open air stage venue that my family was attending. I treasure that graciously written autograph - one of my childhood memories that I can touch, see and remember!

Love Willie. My daughter loves him even more and was ecstatic when a friend gave her two front row tickets to a concert of his around 5 yrs. ago. Made her so happy to be able to enjoy his music live and be so close to him. She grew up hearing rock and roll (mostly) from me but at a young age she started liking country music and Willie was one of her favorite.
I can understand why she likes him so much. He's very humble, positive, caring and loving❤️
And of course has made great music!
He truly loves and appreciates music like myself and my daughter does, and he's still rolling out music at 88😊

Seriously, that's one of the best things I've heard said in awhile...and said in a way only Willie could muster.
Could you explain what he meant by that statement? Does it mean 'working?' He said mental, physical, etc. Does he mean doing learning something, being productive?

“On the road again” is the song my wife sings to me as we get on a new motorcycle, point the wheel towards the horizon and gun it. It’s been the precursor to a bunch of incredible fun and sometimes strange adventures! We owe you big time, Willie for being out voice of unreason.

Not surprised Willie was influenced by Sinatra. Unlike most country musicians, Nelson is a superb crooner. You can really hear this in his beautifully spare sound band sort-of dials it down and Willie really “works” the stage microphone. He performs with amazing dynamic range and coloration. Combined with his unique style of guitar he’s really in a league of his own...a really national treasure. For all his down-home / aww-shucks style and human warmth, he’s really a sophisticated musician.

Wonderful interview. I can never get enough of Willie Nelson. When I sit around the house and play guitar, more often than not, it's usually one of Willie's songs if I am not writing or playing one of my gospel songs. Willie is truely a spiritual man.

So, I'm having breakfast at a Holiday Inn in Bowling Green Kentucky. I'm out with a 3 hit wonder named Starbuck doing sound reinforcement for several college dates. Someone behind me says, "Can I join you?" I assume it is some of Starbuck's road crew and say, "Of course." Willie sits down at my table. WE chatted about catering connected to various promoters, bus drivers, outdoor shows, and next weeks shows. I've worked for bigger bands but the only person I ever met that was as good a human as Willie Nelson was Steve Winwood.

I used to see these folks in Austin Texas n they're fine people but amazingly the nicest one of the whole bunch was Stevie Ray Vaughn I saw him lots as I repaired guitars but I've had Stevie put his arms around me hold my hand and guide me through some killer guitar riffs that I was struggling with at the time. He was a truly great person not racist or ageist or sexest just cool and I knew him before and after his coke fueled days and he could snort a gram in each nostril and still be calm n I could barely talk lolhahahaha but Willy is ok I remember seeing his name as a child in Printers Alley in Nashville in the 50's
