    I have a fun story about Pandemonium.
    When I was a kid, me and my brother saw a review on TV of this game and really wanted to play it. We didn't remember the name of the game tho, just some gameplay with the main character jumping and bouncing on giant watermelons.
    So, my mom took us to the video store that weekend to rent it and my younger stormed up to the counter and asked the guy for that game with the girl jumping around with the huge melons....
    So.. Later that day, we apparently played Tomb Raider xD

    A detail I love in Pandemonium is how in the backgrounds you can see future parts of the level coming up. As a kid it made me really excited to see the rest of the level.

    The Klonoa series as well as Strider 2 and the newer Strider on PS3 are definitely some of the more top tier 2.5D games I'd totally add to the list of must play games

    Inafune didn't actually say "It's better than nothing.", that dude who was translating his words add that himself.

      @@valletas The issue is that he didn't make it clear at that point in the event, he was giving his own opinion about the game and the situation and wasn't still translating inafune's words.

    Best way to play g-darius is on the Taito Legends 2 disc for ps2. The ps1 version has severe limitations because of the slowdown and the music cuts out like was mentioned because of limitations of CD Redbook audio. There was a PC version that has this same issue and Mame still doesn't get it right either, so if you're interested in this excellent entry into the Darius series, go for Taito Legends 2.

    13:42 Actually it wasn't Inafune who said the infamous "better than nothing" line. It was actually a mistranslation his translator during the launch stream for Mighty No 9. Inafune has gone on record to saying that he "owns all of the problems" Mighty No 9 ended up having. This isn't a huge problem since I will admit Inafune has done some stupid things at Comcept like the Red Ash kickstarter before Mighty No 9's release but it's something worth pointing out.

    • @jasonblalock4429
      @jasonblalock4429 8 років тому +12

      I think the issue is that it's starting to feel like Inafune just doesn't think much before he acts, then assumes he can apologize his way out of any mistakes made in the process. It's a good example of how the "Ready, Fire, Aim" approach can backfire.

    • @SuperCrippledGamer

      It's like when you carelessly play a prank on someone, they get physically hurt, and your the guy that says "OH SHIT! Dude, are you okay? I'm so sorry, I didn't think it would hurt that bad."
      Inafune is that guy.

    Man, I'd love to see a Game Sack movie. I cant get enough of this stuff. Whatever it would be about, I know you could do it Joe....and Dave! I love your skits so much, especially the WTF episode that took us back through time.... Blown. Away. You have my respect for that kind of foresight. IF! I had any input on a Game Sack movie, I'd love to not see any game footage or reviews, rather a 30 minute short involving video games of course, but do what you do best....Just a funny, quirky, scary, weird or whatever, but always entertaining story that takes place locally, no grand scale epics, just you and Dave. And video games...Oh! and Jen of course, if she wants to be in it too, I'd like to see more of her and get to know her character better. And um, the last thing is that you would let me be your assistant cinematographer. :) Thumbs up. I really enjoy your stuff. Just a big fan.

    One thing that i found really cool about the boss fights, is that they give audio ques for when they attack. I was playing with the sound off and listening to my own music, and kept dieing. So i turned the music up, and it made the fight much easier

    G Darius was one of my favorite games as a teenager. One of the best things that you skipped was that if you hold the capture ball button while you have an enemy captured instead of it blowing up, you absorb it and shoot it out as a giant laser beam. The bigger the enemy the bigger the beam and the longer it would last. Always awesome to use it against the boss fish

      They're all sidescrawlers, which are inherently two-dimentional gameplay wise. Graphically they're full 3D. What was 2.5D about it? When I hear 2,5D I usually think about Duke Nukem 3D, Mario Kart 64 and other games that mix 2D and 3D graphics.

    • @leadbones
      @leadbones 8 років тому +5

      3D models moving along a linear path in a 3D world is considered 2.5D, like Veiwtiful Joe and Mighty No. 9. Sprites moving along a linear path with 3D background elements and shifting camera angles is considered 2.5D also.

    • @ShindlerReal
      @ShindlerReal 8 років тому

      Considered by who? Last time I checked "2.5D" was used to secribe mid-90s attempts to mix 3D and 2D graphics. I think branding every modern sidescroller a 2.5D game is purposeless. You can argue certain few games like Crash Bandicoot or Super Mario 3D Land had enough 2D and 3D elements to be considered 2.5. But there's literally nothing 3D in Yoshi's Wooly World or Mighty Number 9 except for graphics that are fully 3D.

    • @leadbones
      @leadbones 8 років тому +6

      A 2.5D games mixes 3D graphics with 2D gameplay. Sometimes there are sprites involved, sometimes not. It's pretty basic and straightforward. Your argument relates to just graphics. A game can have 3D graphics, but play on a 2 dimensional plane, hence 2.5D.

    One thing missed about G-Darius is the counter beam. If you hold down the circle button after capturing an enemy and release the button you can use the counter beam. This beam can be used to counter an enemy's pink beam by pressing the fire button while the beam is active. This can be used to end those long boss fights you mentioned rather quickly.

    • @GameSack
      @GameSack  8 років тому

      That's what I always thought too, it's even written on Mame list (2.5d games). If it use polygons, it's 3d, if it's sprites, it's 2d, if it's prerendered 3d it's 2.5d (not 3d but can't say it's 2d either).

    • @Blutroth

      Yes i agree, These in the video are just 3D sidescrollers.

    • @classawarrior
      @classawarrior 8 років тому +19

      Both of these styles are often referred to as "2.5D". Either (a) 2D sprites with depth etc applied to create a 3D effect, or (b) 3D rendering but with the gameplay/movement occurring in a 2D plane, and usually with the camera locked to a side view.

    A friend of mine recommended Pandemonium! because it was one of her childhood favorites. I immediately loved the 2.5D approach, but soundtrackwise only the first stage (the one shown in this video) stood out to me.
    I am generally the type of person that don't really notice the music in a game as anything but ambient background noise, and only very rarely does more than ONE track per game stand out to me as something I will go and listen to on youtube after playing.

    I think of Puppeteer as a kind of spiritual successor of Dynamite Heady, both games are situated in fictional acting scenarios (Heady in a TV Studio, Puppeteer in a theater) and both games' protagonists use their heads as their main weapons with multiple heads to choose from, each one with their own effect.

    Puppeteer is such an amazing game, very underrated. I got it free back in 2014 when it was on PS+ and I liked it so much I bought it from a different account just to support the developers. One of my favorite games from the last generation.

    Pandemonium is an underrated platformer in my opinion. Some really stellar level design in there. Cloud Palace and the Frozen Palace (if I remember the names correctly) are just amazing.
    Never used the Jester though, the other character has a double jump so she renders him useless.

    Another great video Game Sack. Thank you for your efforts . I'm currently playing AC chronicles on the PS vita.
    That could be used for a future installment of 2.5 D games. Also, Batman Origins Blackgate uses the 2.5D well.
    Some other ones to look at includes Bionic Commando Rearmed , the 2012 version of Castle of Illusion, Xeodrifter from Renegade kid, DariusBurst Chronicle Saviors, Tinertia on steam, Song of the Deep, Muramasa Rebirth , Odinsphere , and uh....that's all I have on the top of my head.

    Strider 2014, LittleBigPlanet series, Contra Shattered Soldier, Tomba, Dracula X Chronicles, Stealth Inc 1 & 2, Wild 9, Oddworld: New N Tasty, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze & DKC Returns... some others.
    Some other great 2.5D shmups... Dariusburst Chronicle Saviors, Einhander, Raystorm & Ray Crisis, Gradius V, R Type Final.

    Great episode! I'd love to see you guys making a series out of it. Highly recommended titles for a future episode are R-Type Delta, R-Type Final, and Radiant Silvergun. Einhänder is also pretty cool, as well as the Street Fighter EX series. On the N64 there is Mystical Ninja 2 and Kirby 64 which are ok. Oh, almost forgot Out of this World/Another World (such an awesome game!)

    G-Darius is an awsome game, i love it more than R-Type Delta. But you didn't mention that you can soak up the captured enemy and blast off a hyper beam. And if you shoot that beam into an hyper beam of a boss and keep hitting the shoot button, it will grow and gets even more powerful. This is so satisfying, and the boss will take massive damage, so the fights are much shorter if you do that. PLAY IT AGAIN! :)

    I also really enjoyed Mighty No. 9, personally. I beat it twice on Normal and once on Hard. The bosses are indeed quite hard, but I learned them. The game really scratches that fast action itch for me. I also do like the voice acting during gameplay, and I find some of the music pretty catchy.
    Also, Inafune didn't say "It's better than nothing." That was something his translator adlibbed.

    Great video as usual guys! Puppeteer is one of the few reasons I still even have my PS3. The 2014 Strider reboot, Trine, and Astebreed are some 2.5d games I'd definitely recommend checking out.
