I’ve never needed the corkscrew , I’ve used the Philips head a bunch , yea sure you can get similar results with a flathead but good luck doing that with a stubborn screw
You forgot to mention the needle hole near the corkscrew which can be used to store a pin or sewing needle (Victorinox even sell a purpose made needle to fit this). Very useful. I also find the corkscrew handy for loosening tight knots.
I just bought one, and I really love. Really useful. By the way, a tweezer is tuned nearly perfect Bb musical tone, so I can use it for my guitar's tuning. :-)
This is my favorite pocket knife. It has distilled the tools down to the most useful: Who doesn't need a corkscrew? I'm always the go-to guy at parties. It easily fits in my pocket. I have been buying these for years, each time I try to get a different color. They usually last me 4 or 5 years before I have to get a new one.
A Spartan resides in my weekend bag, though I have been 'tinkering' with the notion of getting a Tinker instead. I had an eyeglass screwdriver in the corkscrew of my Spartan, but nowadays it seems like the screws on my glasses don't come loose anymore. :-/
Do you think it’s overkill if I get Spartan as well as champ for my husband for Christmas? I’m thinking Spartan he could carry with him every day and champ he could bring with him when he hits the road. Along with Spartan lol
I feel like the sportsman is better because it has the nail file with a nail picker(which can also be used as philips screwdriver) instead of the second blade on the spartan.
The corkscrew is explicitly why this one is useful for me. I far more often need a pocket corkscrew than multibit set, but I guess that is the whimsy of the europeans.
@@ironman2326 I have never actually owned a compact. I've always liked having the separate can opener & cap lifter but I do miss the scissors. I may have to pick up a compact & try it for a while.
@@eugenevictortooms4174 I have the compact but I'm like you, I like the separate cap lifter and can opener, mainly for the small flathead/phillips screwdriver on the can opener. So now I'm in the lookout for a spartan for cheap on ebay that I can put plus scales on. I'll miss the scissors tho lol. It's such a toss up 🤷🏼♂️
I use the reamer for drilling holes in wood (i.e, toggles), and also sewed a broken Camelbak strap back in place. I find it useful for edc, but everyone has different needs.
I believe the Spartan is slightly thinner than the Compact, and it's can opener is stronger than the Compact's 2-in-1 can/bottle opener. But Compact has a nail file on its hook and the ever so useful scissors. But in the UK the Compact is like double the price of a Spartan, so that's another factor.
I have thick SAKs and and several Classic SD knives, but not Spartan or Tourist. I prefer Tourist that is a smaller version of Spartan, but it looks like I will have to buy Spartan because it can be found cheaper.
Probably a bit late to answer... But basically you stick the wire in the tool, fold it back, then gently close the main blade on top of it and twist it. It will strip the wire bare.
Buy a bottle of wine with a cork in it, then you'll find a use for it for sure. But seriously some say to open tight knots...or screw it into a tree and hang gear off it though I'd never do that as I want to use the knife if I'm in the woods.
@@simonh6371 I get that the corkscrew CAN be used for tight knots...but at the same time so can a lot of things. a 3D phillips that I can use on actual stubborn screws to get full power on them is just SOOOOOO much more useful.
@@1BeGe Totally with you on the Phillips vs the Corkscrew. I bought a Climber on sale about 4 years ago and like it and carry it a lot, but I'd prefer the Phillips i.e. the Super Tinker instead. I advised a work colleague to go for the Super Tinker as a first SAK, also they're actually cheaper than Climbers on Amazon.

Personally, I really don't miss a Philips head screwdriver on my Spartan, the tip on the can opener does the job in most cases.
Plus the cork screw its really usefull untying knots (and u can open bottles of wine)
@@sara_gonzalez lots of things can work as a philips head, nothing acts like a corkscrew lol

I always carry one of these with me because it’s good for small tasks like cutting open a package or a letter and it’s a good backup
Love my Spartan, we been through a lot together.
Mickey Mouse is that you?
Its great knife i have spartan for 4 years and its perfect since first day
Yes, it's very easy to sharpen too. Replaced the scales once a couple of years ago but that's it. Had it for 7 years or so now.

Sounds good to me.
I have my mums from sometime in the 80s so it’s older and I use it at scouts and in my garden
I feel like the sportsman is better because it has the nail file with a nail picker(which can also be used as philips screwdriver) instead of the second blade on the spartan.
Small blade is perfect
Get a manager on the keyring
A non-locking knife is actually a huge plus in the UK since the ability to lock the blade would make it illegal to carry in public without a defence
I just love it ,best of the bests
And I want to buy a classic SD too
buy alox version
Did you ever buy the classic? It's so adorable. I keep mine on my keys and that silly little knife is endlessly useful.
@@faethe000 agree. I have I believe 3 of them. One is alox version. Mine is always on my neck. It is around 20 grams.
Yes. A Classic SD perfectly compliments a number of SAKs, so your main knife can be kept to a thinner model. 👍

I put plus scales on mine too. It doesn't matter how many knives I get, the Spartan is the knife I always go back to.

Great review - thanks - I just ordered one in white on Amazon.
Awesome! Enjoy it! Thanks for Watching!
I love the knives I have 8 of different models but the scales are scratch magnets I wish they were more durable in that way.
I got it. I love it. The blade has a bipolar personality disorder. 1 time thinks is a scalpel the next time thinks is a bayonette. 😄
I love the Spartan, but I would swap out the awl/reamer for something a bit more useful as it’s the only tool I never use

My EDC medium pocket knife, I have the Midnite champ on my key ring.
I wish I did my home worker before buying I bought one today for 120$ decided to search it after purchase and I see they are 50$ in my country.
Think you could put this on a key chain or recommend to?
why would you pick this over the compact (and vice versa)? I have the spartan plus a classic SD.

I would get one since it’s the original one but the tinker is better imo for actually using since it has the Phillips head screwdriver
The interior dividers are aluminium, not stainless steel.
Unless you meant the springs ??
For heavy duty you would not use this kind of knife, do you? :-) But the knife is very good. I keep buying them and cannot stop...
