Hello UA-cam! I feel like this is the part where I say "first time caller, long time listener"... I've been part of the EDC community for a few years now. I've watched a lot, and bought a lot, and now I figure after a lot of time (and money) spent on the hobby, it's probably about time to start sharing what I've learned. I'm a big fan of EDC gear, especially watches. I have an every-growing col...

    Speaking to people who may look at a Swiss army knife as something they can use--- my recommendation is do not purchase multiple function tools because when you get them you will discover that they are not really multi functional and as you are using them you are desperately wishing for a real version of the tool you need. my best example is the three identical Leatherman tools I bought and took to Nepal. When I was working on various things there, I discovered that I always reach for the real tool instead of the Leatherman multi function. I had to ask myself when I was tightening a flat blade screw, which would I rather have-- this Leatherman or real screwdriver and my answer was always I want a real screwdriver. By the end of the trip I never use my Leatherman tools at all. Instead I gave one each to the man who had helped me the most in my travels. These men were very delighted and I guess later will discover how useless the Leatherman is. I found definitely that's the only reason to carry a Leatherman type tool is to give it away. They do make great gifts because people receiving them have never tried them and do not know how wastrel having one really is. I buy Swiss army knives because I enjoy looking at them and thinking about their various functions. I am purely a collector and have found through direct use that the multi function tool is better for looking at, so I do. But now Swiss army knife company is making so many different kinds, I think they're really selling to collectors and to people who find out that multifunction tools are not satisfying.

    You call the Compact best tool set on SAK, the you say parcel hook is useless. Sorry but I don't get the point XD. Parcel hook has a lot of uses actually one of which is keep the pen in place (under the closed hook)

    A non-locking knife is actually a huge plus in the UK since the ability to lock the blade would make it illegal to carry in public without a defence

    wish it had a Phillips head instead of the hook, a can opener filed into a package opener hook, and a small nail file/cleaner… and maybe a partially serrated, locked, one-hand open main knife blade… and then maybe one more slot in the scales for… something 🤷🏻‍♂️ and somehow had Alox scales, while still having the various tool slots. …then it’d be a perfect knife 👌

    If they'd make the tool a bit thicker to accommodate making the combo tool more robust (for prying), I would have bought my Compact sooner. The only reason I carry the Compact now is because I can go to my EDC bag and pull out the Leatherman Surge. 😂

    This is my favorite pocket knife. It has distilled the tools down to the most useful: Who doesn't need a corkscrew? I'm always the go-to guy at parties. It easily fits in my pocket. I have been buying these for years, each time I try to get a different color.They usually last me 4 or 5 years before I have to get a new one.

    This is a rugged tool, not fine jewelry. Ditch the gloves.

  • @sotetsotetsotetsotetsotet2379

    The corkscrew is explicitly why this one is useful for me. I far more often need a pocket corkscrew than multibit set, but I guess that is the whimsy of the europeans.

    You forgot to mention the needle hole near the corkscrew which can be used to store a pin or sewing needle (Victorinox even sell a purpose made needle to fit this). Very useful. I also find the corkscrew handy for loosening tight knots.

      Iron man - A tool that does everything is often a tool that is too awkward to use, so I have Soldier to complement my Compact. It has a Phillips driver, an awl, a saw and a strong flat blade screwdriver/prybar. I have an ignition file for my nails. It may be a one trick pony, but it takes no space at all and will never wear out.

    • @simonh6371
      @simonh6371 Рік тому

      @@ScorpionRegent That's an interesting take, but I just carry a Climber instead of Compact, or a Farmer X if I want the stronger alox tool with added wood saw. Okay I guess you mean the current Soldier obviously, I have that too and take it camping but silly knife laws in the UK mean I can't EDC it. When I'm carrying the current Soldier I put a camo scaled Ambassador in my IFAK...it's a second hand one I bought on etsy, camo scales on a 74mm SAK are very hard to find.

    • @ScorpionRegent
      @ScorpionRegent Рік тому

      @@simonh6371 My soldier is a German Army issue, 111mm with OD scales and a Bundeswehr insignia. Rather than collecting a lot of cool "toys" I am making a serious effort to make the most use of what I have. Most days I only carry one knife, if any. The UK's knife laws are restrictive. I find that laws are a poor remedy for a irresponsible society.

    • @simonh6371
      @simonh6371 Рік тому

      @@ScorpionRegent I bought the Swiss version of the Soldier with green nylon scales, with black stripes which add a bit of grip. Nearly bought the BW version though. Same as you I buy knives for use rather than a collection but I have ended up with too many to be honest, I buy SAKs when I see them at a good price and kid myself Ive saved money, rather like a woman buying shoes on sale and doing the same. I agree that our knife laws don't remedy or address the underlying causes of knife crime. As far as I know knife crime is generally perpetrated using large kitchen knives, not locking Victorinox knives or fixed blade bushcraft knives. Cheers.

    • @ScorpionRegent
      @ScorpionRegent Рік тому

      @@simonh6371 It's an ongoing challenge redistributing the things I don't need, including knives, to friends and family. What legislators fail to see is that criminals by their very nature will commit crimes. Making something illegal won't stop a determined individual. Everyone needs to make the world a better place otherwise entropy, chaos, corrosion and apathy will have their way. Yes, it makes for a fun movie, but not a good life. Cheers.

    The “parcel hook” is the silliest tool in the Victorinox lineup. Yes, yes, it can also help you untangle your shoe laces but how often do you need that. After carrying an SAK daily for 30 years, I’m still waiting for that moment to arrive.
