Thank you for staying with the turbo 4.3/awd setup. It's too easy to drop an ls in anything these days, the setup in that truck is what made it special.
@@WhistleTeets85 nope, not a 3.8, not the same engine. Not close at all. The thing that made this truck special is the fact that nothing special is on it. But it all works well. Live axle, awd system from a van, tb from a Corvette and an 18g turbo. Nothing special at all. Yet the result was special.
I still come back here from time to time just to listen to that magnificent exhaust sound. It's wonderful what a big turbo can do to a nice deep exhaust sound that would otherwise be loud and obnoxious.
In 1999, Mark Guimont and Bob Gibson from Kingston, Ontario drove a 1998 AWD Sonoma with a v6 competition engine of around 350hp in the One Lap of America, and again in 2000. The truck handled very well, accelerated with AWD and was generally set up well for racing. They did quite well despite some issues that you'd associate with a one-off GM show vehicle. Which it was, it was put into a trash compactor directly after the last race. Just a bit of history which is similar to this Syclone.
This truck has been one of my favorite vehicles since I was a kid, and this one does not disappoint. Love everything about it, especially the radiator in the back!
Lovers of fast trucks might like to check out the long tradition of small truck racing in Thailand - often diesels and often not as fast as you might imagine (some have to double as everyday farm trucks) yet a real, proper, open access, home grown racing for people on real-world incomes and limited resources - wonderful!
This is just an epic build, I love Syclones and this one is just in another level. Bravo Sir! And Matt, thanks for this season of tuned, it was fantastic. Keep uploading videos to TST.
This guy gets it... Keeping the original spirit of a base vehicle has been something I truly believe in, and I'm glad to see such an example of such, especially on a vehicle as unique as the GMC Syclone!
Every time I watch builds like these, it makes me believe that I can do what I truly want to do with my car. Taking an 05 Malibu and doing a drive train swap with a 6th gen Corvette or an 06 GTO. I hope that one day when I complete that build that you Matt, can come drive my car.
This video pushed me to start up the search I had started in the late 90's for Typhoon number 13. I had given up hope of finding it but when this video first came out I decided to start looking again. Found it in 2017 and bought it. Had a badass engine built for it last year and working on getting a good suspension under it with some nice brakes this year. Got a lot of work ahead of me but I always wanted to come back here to thank you for rekindling my search for my childhood dream car.
Why put a V-8 into a Syclone anyway? Why not save tons of money and put it in a regular S-15 or S10? In other words, why would anyone buy a Syclone not for its inherent uniqueness, the turbo 6?
MAN I AGREE WITH YOU 100 PERCENT!! TO ME PUTTIN A V-8 IN A SYCLONE MAKES IT NOT A SYCLONE ANYMORE..ITS LIKE PUTTIN A 4 CYL IN A FORD LIGHTNING AND STILL CALLIN IT A LIGHTNING.. HEH
@@WhistleTeets85 what? 3.8 turbo6? Syclones and Typhoons didn't come stock with 3.8L's they came stock with a 4.3L V6 that GM slapped a turbo system onto, and AWD system from the Bravada SUV. Faster then a Ferrari and a GN.

This makes me miss my S-10 so bad. Had a 91 short bed, I dropped in a 30 over marshall 4.3 and a BW T5. Gutted all the weight it didn't need down to 3,065 lbs. Slapped on some dp90 flat black,14x6 wheels up front, and 15x10s out back. Sure was a lot of fun to drive.
Big congrats to the builder! Man, you are living my dream. I had a Syclone for a couple of years in the late 90's, and it was just like the commentator said: good for straight line, but not the turns. I dreamed about putting a 6-speed manual in it, a longer duration cam to get the engine to breathe up around 5500 rpm, redistributing the weight and putting IRS on the rear. I've always been a corner-turner, and driving the Syclone frustrated the hell out of me: it was impossible to carve a smooth arc through a turn. It had a lot of initial understeer on turn-in, then the rear end would come around later on, requiring unwinding the steering wheel.
I saw this years ago and loved it. Almost as much as seeing a stock one back in '91 at Cecil County Dragway. It was cool. Today I have just acquired a '97 S10 4.3 4x4 with 75k on the clock and am looking for which direction to take it. Don't know if this is the level I'd go but AWD turbo is looking pretty good.
These are the episodes that got me watching tuned in the first place. It is nice to see the Subarus, evos, and other popular tuner cars. but those all have huge markets with off the shelf products someone can bolt on without really knowing anything about engines and car setups. These are the real car lovers. keep it up tuned, another great season on the books. much enjoyed.
Matt Farah!!! this is what i call tuned, no doubt like you mentioned horsepower sells. this is 1 of a few good examples since my last post on your video that has covered all aspects of a tuned vehicle ground up. ben stiller impersonator might be an impersonator however this vehicle is a gem and a true definition of the title tuned. beautiful piece, well covered... not a GMC fan or a truck fan and dont know anything about this car... but im sold, the right suspensions, brakes and a well thought of chassis with weight distribution and weight reduction in mind is never wrong. Once again good job, keep it coming its covers like these that really gets me of how involved people are to their car... its a true representation of who they are. oh btw love your sub
The stock fuel injection system in these trucks in certain years is their downfall. With the spider injection (center sequential) injectors were not able to be swapped and thus the max one could obtain was around 400hp max with correct tuning. Later years used the multiport which solved this issue, but before that the only way was to swap to a marine intake and run an after market system. Also the 4.3 Z code engines were also multi-point in an era of throttle body injection, thus allowing them to stretch the limits when matched with the td06.
I've been a fan of the r34 since I was 8, the grand national since I was 11, and the syclone since 13. This is a Frankenstein of my dream truck, but it's amazing!!!! The fact it's still a 6banger with most the original dash and awd is badass, turbo 6 bangers

WHY DIDN"T GM SEE THIS AS THE NEXT BIG THING?! American performance cars should have been AWD! FR-based AWD! NOT FF-based! All GM had to do was maybe bring back the Monte Carlo and/or the Grand Nat as a Mid-size/large AWD sport coupe. In not Chevy or Buick, then give it to Pontiac so they can do something to justify themselves, in big way. The G-body was not that big back then, so something about that size would have been awesome.
JD FR = Front-engine, Rear wheel drive. FR based AWD examples include the GT-R, BMW AWD cars, AWD Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger, AWD/4WD trucks and Truck based S/CUVs. You take out the Front wheel drive components of an AWD vehicle and it is still a RWD vehicle. FR based AWD cars are fairly uncommon becasue of the prevulence of FF, Front engine, Front wheel drive, cars to which AWD is often added after the fact, like the Ford Fusion, Mitsubishi Lan Evo, among others.. The 1991 quad 4 h.o boosted is something I always wanted to see. Mine n/a in high school ran 14.7... They loved the 7k rmp range. Durable trans 5 speed. I hollowed my cat and made a cold air. Ohio roads got the best of it. Built and boosted that would have been a 4 cyl monster.
Although Im not so sure about how plausible it would be, you could install a fan that sucks air out from beneath the car to reduce pressure as well as dramatically increase downforce. Throw that in the bed of the truck and it would outperform the spoiler and might help to balance the weight distribution as well. It was done on the Brabham BT46B formula race car, but was banned for being too good! If you manage to throw on one of them on there this thing would be an absolute monster, more so than it already is. Just a thought, but what a build!
Not sure if I like this... I mean to each his own but this guy could of started with a cheap-ass worth-nothing S-10 instead of wrecking an actual Syclone. Also, where did he get an aluminum 4.3L?? And why does it only have 500hp!?
As I mentioned previously below the truck had roughly 110k miles on it when we decided to go all out. If I get the urge, I can buy a low mile collectible Syclone, park it, look at it, never drive it and hope it appreciates in value some day. The 4.3L aluminum block is now out of production, but once upon a time it was offered by the GM Performance division. It is what is known as their a Bowtie racing block designed to be stronger to handle higher horsepower levels along with better oiling passages designed for higher loads and rpms. 500 horsepower to the wheels is plenty for a 3000 lb truck used primarily for road racing. Keeping the engine reliable and the truck drivable is crucial. Even with the all wheel drive and sticky R compound tires, this much power can still spin all four tires!
Andrew B Exactly! Tuned conservatively for longevity! No interest in building a 1000 hp dyno queen by swapping in a giant lethargic turbo, monster fuel injectors, overly aggressive timing and ultimately having to rebuild the motor all too frequently.
HighPerformanceTruck Very cool truck. Some people don't understand the money involved in building/maintaining a high power vehicle. Currently working on a 06' Subaru WRX while we drive the 2011 wrx :)
HighPerformanceTruck Neat, don't get me wrong, I wasn't trying to dog your awesome creation. This truck tickles me in all the right places. Just my style of modification too! (love the Alum 4.3L) I guess I'm just one of those people who doesn't like modding limited editions. lol I think this bothers me even more since I like the truck so much. Two sides of my brain fighting!
Every time I get around to getting the truck ready for paint, I need to modify something else from a functional standpoint. On second thought a race track can be pretty brutal to a nice paint job.
HighPerformanceTruck Cool build man. Great to see people doing unique stuff. Every week I feel the comments section is full of people who don't understand the premise of the show, so don't pay too much heed to the haters. I like the rough and ready look; going fast makes everything look cool anyway.
One of my buddies had one of these I always liked it, he owned his own machine shop and specialized in head work I knOw he worked some magic on those heads. But not sure of the extent of his work. But it was fast. And let's face it 4 wheel burn outs are CAF HE WOULD STAGE, IT WOULD SQUAT ,AND ROAST THE TIRES for about 2sec and let it loose and it was gone. Cool ass truck !

The 1991 quad 4 h.o boosted is something I always wanted to see. Mine n/a in high school ran 14.7... They loved the 7k rmp range. Durable trans 5 speed. I hollowed my cat and made a cold air. Ohio roads got the best of it. Built and boosted that would have been a 4 cyl monster.
is it 4wd or awd?
Viscous coupled all wheel drive.
ok wow no wounder is handles surprisingly good
.
Just a thought, but what a build!
music name please??? anyone
I remember seeing this on +Speedhunters a couple of years ago! Finally awesome to see footage of this thing!
Sould i suggest my 532 bhp Lancia Zagato
This car ticks all the boxes for me... i come back every now and then to rewatch this episode.
What is the intro song?
Henry Windsor I wanna know too!
i love how it sounds. just loud enough and crazy mean
.
I hate trucks with a passion but this is fucking legit, I'd drive that!
Oh come on, you can't shit on ALL american vehicles (besides the syclone)
I think that Truck as absolutely awesome! Its a lot of wrench work involved. But it looks like the owner knows what he is doing. Very cool finale.
Meanwhile in Australia... v8 ute racing is completely normal...
(a ute is what you yanks call a pick up)
Phillip Tunstall lol utes..some of us already knew that one &
we have NASCAR pickup racing for some reason
been down under for a lil while, got in a V8 ute, still shiting my pants 5 years later
weve been racing puck up trucks forever.... pick ul truck is what you koalas call ute
Krevin Grard el camino (68-70) is my favorite car but its technically a truck...
Krevin Grard guess that makes since
This is like every final version Forza Motorsport 7 car I've ever ended up with... but real. This is the sickest fkn Sy/Ty ever . . .
Not sure if I like this... I mean to each his own but this guy could of started with a cheap-ass worth-nothing S-10 instead of wrecking an actual Syclone.
Also, where did he get an aluminum 4.3L?? And why does it only have 500hp!?
500hp to four wheels is quite a bit. Possible conservative tuning?

Exactly!
Thanks matt for including a quarter mile time. Also as always keep up the good work.

i want it but needs a real paint job
Every time I get around to getting the truck ready for paint, I need to modify something else from a functional standpoint. On second thought a race track can be pretty brutal to a nice paint job.
HighPerformanceTruck Cool build man. Great to see people doing unique stuff. Every week I feel the comments section is full of people who don't understand the premise of the show, so don't pay too much heed to the haters. I like the rough and ready look; going fast makes everything look cool anyway.
Vary true just my opinion this is your truck?
PainEditz
Totally understand. Yes my fast pig.
HighPerformanceTruck Amazing build :) i love it tho so different shoot if u lived close id pay u to help me build a car
Cool ass truck !
i want to see an r32
This is a crazy project! I would love to see this thing do a fly by on my on the highway. I would love to hear that turbo!
