Ben Uyeda rocking the boat of traditional furniture design. Love the look, the bottom of the bench looks amazing too, all the wood grain and contours remind me a topographical map.
Fred Flintstone approves of this build..... and so do I. I think your solution to the cracks is a good one... As always, you teach as good as you build.
I really appreciate how you “granited” us deep insight into all the fine details of this beautiful project without us having to be “intrusive” with questions.
This is a very beautiful build. Natural stone, natural wood and organic shapes. 🙂I would love to see a variant where it's not sealed with a glossy polish, just leaving it rustic/distressed to give it that 'found in the wild' look. Can't wait to see what you create next!

Man! This is definitely one of my faves from your channel, not only from this year, but actually in a while. It's clean and just feels sweet and ticklish in my eyes! Since I'd put it at the foot of my bed I guess my pun would be "it (the bench) would make my bed Rock!
As an old guy who has been working with his hands for almost 50 years, take my advice and do everything you can to reduce vibration and shock in the tools you’re using. The accumulated damage to your hands and forearms can leave you with reduced function and a lot of annoying pain. Wood handled tools like an axe would be better than a machete. I know you probably did that for the cool factor, but for people wanting to do something like this for themselves, an axe would be a better choice. Also if it glances off toward your body, a machete has like 2 feet of cutting edge to get you vs an axes 4 inches. Cool bench tho.
How true. I fight pain daily. Unfortunately I was not in a position to refuse the jobs I had 35 years ago. Everything from texting to wiping can at times be excruciating.
@@tireballastserviceofflorid7771 yeah, years ago nobody really cared about health and safety and I grew up working on farms, then the military, then industry. It’s frustrating now that I’m the most skilled and capable and I’m restricted by my broken down body. Like you’d said, even something as simple as typing out a comment can be painful
@@tireballastserviceofflorid7771I am pretty old and know plenty of older people, including my father, who did plenty of labor and are not suffering from your maladies. I guess it just depends on your particular body.
@ohsweetmystery Well, work is not all the same. I had to run a punch press when I was 18. Made 4000 parts a day or was fired. The machine worked great, but gave everybody corporal tunnel syndrome. Then other jobs just like it for a few decades. You do the wrong type of work, and you're screwed. Other jobs are a lot of work but way less risky on the body.
What I love about these builds whether it be for exterior or not, I love the carved, natural appearing shapes that come out of these projects. I love when outdoor furniture resemble some sort of natural, from the Earth material and of course wood always offers that but even more so when carved to appear like it’s this random piece you found when hiking. FYI I’ve seen enough reviews that the Ryobi grinder isn’t the greatest of all grinders. Definitely on the cheaper side but I’m wondering if it was the grinder not performing the way it needed to, even though ik it’s rocks it makes me wonder if it’s a tool issue too
This bench 'rocks' ha. I really like the look of the stones and how cheap they were. I've used cast concrete for furniture and I worry about the possibility of cracks and chipped edges during shipping, it seems that rocks would be much stronger and wear resistant?
Super cool idea! Thanks for modeling using proper PPE. Cutting concrete, rock etc can create silica dust which is super dangerous. Some interesting recent research coming out of the LA area and the reduction in lifespan of workers who work for counter top companies.
Wow! You really cracked that bench out of the park! Sorry, all the "good" puns were taken. Love the project, love the buns. Thank you for posting the project and inviting all to throw our terrible paronomasia into the balance.
something that a motivated person can achieve .... without having a zeelion of dollars in machinery .... which actually are not woodworkers but machine woodworkers..... cheers bro
I would definitely try to find a 230mm angle grinder for this, they are not crazy expensive compared to the diamond discs anyway. The bench looks really nice !
Beautiful work. Very well done and very clever design. I would love to know more about those rocks because my internet searches for "white lapis" or "white lapez" turns up absolutely nothing.
This is an awesome simple project not to talk it down as ofcourse requires skill. But only 2 rocks and a woodbeam with limited powertools, while having a designer look.
Must have somehow missed this one, when it was published. Very cool! Thought, the stones were maybe made from concrete or something at first. But since you figured out, how to actually cut rocks that big with regular tools, it's definitely an option. Thumbs up 👍
Idk where you get your syringes or the price but I found some very affordable in multiple sizes at Tractor Supply. They are large animal syringes. The needles are super sharp, but that can be a plus for some applications! You could always grind down the sharp tip. I use them for injecting glue into small spaces. Also for puncturing rolled flooring laminate and sucking out bubbles.
At 5:02 I see a crocodile with that not near the top, would be a cool sculpture someday!.... I like this project. btw at the end it looked like a caveman skateboard! Kow-a-bunga! Kudos.

Thanks so much I appreciate it! yes! I love a good topo map!
This DIY bench project is boulder than most! It’s got a rock-solid foundation.
Combining stones and lumber really sits well with me!
I love the puns! 😂
This is the type of clever design and doable DIY that I like about your channel!
Thank you very much! I really like this one!
Doable?? 😅
LOVE IT !
Clean, simple. And that perfect balance between wood and stone.

You really rocked that beach.
solid joke!
This is both a wonderful example of carpentry skill, and a beautiful piece of contemporary art. Well done

@@victoriagrayson5082 isn't there a bridge somewhere missing its troll? Do you think your pedantic contribution was necessary?
I really dig this design, it's reminiscent of rock balancing, and the lumber as the bench to, pis the perfect accent to the white lapis.

Really beautiful design and fabrication! Simple and using the stone and wood materials organically
This seat is very, very stylish indeed. I'm adding it to my project list!
It came out really great. Awesome job
Thank you! Cheers!
Love the design and how you shared the build process. Very well done!
I really appreciate your organic design.
Also, love your clean white shop background as it makes watching very relaxing. Well done!
Looks awesome. Really nice to see the progression from the concrete based bench to this. This and the spiral staircase are so unique. Well done.
Your design esthetic is off the chart on this one, beautiful work Ben
Scrumptious addition to any home.
Gorgeous, creative artwork by a master craftsman. Inspired respect.
Beautiful work Ben, love the stone. Glad you didn't take it for granite 😉
lol! next level rock pun. thanks Forby!

Wood and stone together are beautiful. Thanks for such an inspiring design
where did you get the stone?
If I could give this project something stronger than a like, I would. Awesome. I definitely hope to be making something like this.

depends on the rocks and I am no expert but the guy at the rockyard said that the smooth roundish stones like this tend to not chip so easily
@@HomeMadeModern Probably because any weak areas would have eroded during the forming of the rock, leaving only the strongest shape behind
This is so good I love that this would easily go for 1500 or more in a store.
Much more...
Holy moly that thing is sweet. Very inspiring to use materials just laughing around and cup cycle them. 👊🏼
