The First Time I heard a recording of The 4000 Alco Series on UA-cam of the soundeffects of Big Boy. I watched alot of big boy but I couldn't fine one with the soundeffects of Big Boy til now.
im obsessed with the union pacific 4-8-8-4 big boy, everything about it from its size to its power to the way it looks i love, i have several dvds about the big boy as well
Gustavo Coria Não, não é a mais possante das locos a vapor(no, it isn't more powerfull steam), mas é da linha que tem as mais possantes locos a vapor do mundo, as duplex da ALCO, com 4 cilindros(but was for the group of more powerfull steam of word, the duplex of ALCO, all whith 4 cilinders).
Thank you so very much for sharing this awesome video!!! I'm so nostalgic about the steam locomotives and this was the greatest. I agree, though, with some of the comments that the song could have been left out. Thank you again. Have a wonderful life.
I know ive comented on this video before but every time i see a Big Boy move all i can think of is LIKE A BOSS and i wonder what would happen to a car if it was hit by one of these things on a full head of steam
People need to chill regarding the song. It's Pixie Lott - Turn it Up. Listen to the lyrics. It fits..... ~2019 He (Big Boy 4014) will return. I like Western/Folk music with (steam) trains just as much as other train nerds.....but this was refreshingly different -56 year old steam train nerd
Beautiful machines, but today the EPA would shut then down in a second. Also, had to turn the sound off -- as far as I can tell, it had nothing to do with giant steam locomotives from the '40's and '50's. Thanks for uploading the video.
muy buenas fotos !!!!! por ahi lei que pesaba algo asi como 500.000 kg y media 40 metros o sea una animala de locomotora ... que espectaculo haberla visto andar no ???
smoke deflectors, these locomotives when working hard put out massive amounts of thick smoke and sometimes it was enough to were it was impossible for the crew to have a good line of site down the tracks so they implored these and when activated the would push the smoke away so the crew could see what was ahead of them. hope this clears things up :)
AWESOME!! Might need to tweak the emissions a bit, but what the hell...6000hp is gonna produce a bit of smoke....if the same load were put on trucks and hauled across the country I wonder how much pollution that would produce....great video, thanks for sharing :)
How many of you know that famed American trial lawyer Gerry Spence worked as a trainman/yardman during his formulative years at UP in Cheyenne, Wy in the early 1950,s?
Big Boy 4014 is now running excursions along with Challenger 3985 & Union Pacific 4-8-4 number 844. Union Lacific now has triple steam power for their excursion trains & Public relations. Big Boy 4012 is at Steamtown in Scranton,Pennsylvania. I took 2 pictures of which I have put away. In Cheyenne Bib Boy 4004 is on display in a city park. There are some people that want to restore Big Boy 4004 til running order, whether or it that will happen remains to be seen.
@Cardinals525 If you divide what you said into three parts, then you're right. However, if you say them all together, you're not right. "Big Boy" was built to be able to pull a 5.5 mile train on level track. He was never tested like that, but that's what he was built to 'theoretically' do. Also, "Big Boy" was built to reach 80 m.p.h., but I doubt they reached that on the mountains. Lastly, "Big Boy" mostly operated in the mountains, but I'm sure that's not where he went really fast.
(Big Boy watching on a laptop on his front bogie) BB: Hah. I love these tribu- (Song starts) BB: WHAT THE HECK IS THIS BOILER SLUDGE?! (Song continues) BB: WORST. TRIBUTE. EVER. (Song continues) BB: Ugh, somebody scrap me right now.
well your parciallly right, steam as a system is more economical , but the supporting cast as you say brought it down, with todays tech we can build a much more efficent steam loco infact thats what they are doing @Coalition for Sustainable Rail, they are restoring a 4-6-4 updating it & using diffrent types of fuel , it will be interesting when they are finished
What were they burning, old tires? With some modern clean coal technology, better boilers and greatly improved mechanicals, you'd think somebody would build a modern version and do steam tours. Steam engines were pretty primitive, as were the working conditions, imagine a modern better version hauling freight and passengers over the mountains.
@razgrizaceblaze259 One slight change to my last statement in my previous comment. "Big Boy" most operated in the mountains, but he was also used outside of the mountains. As far as I know, he just wasn't used outside of the mountains that frequently.
Nice set of photos and video, but that girl singing as a soundtrack to a Big Boy storming up Sherman Hill is not only very inappropriate but also totally ridiculous! Could you not have just repeated the sound recording from the beginning of the slide show?
actually there were 25 Big Boy's, not 14. the first 20, 4000-4019 were built and delivered to Union Pacific in 1941. 5 more Big Boy's, 4020-4024 were built and delivered in 1944.
@starguard I did the video, do not worry if you do not ever want it down I can send you or you can download it from youtube ... Thank you for your comment, I hope that one day emerge again the BigBoy!
@jakarate11 If you want a recording of a Big Boy whistle, just take a recording of the U.P. Challenger #3985. The Challengers had the same type of whistle as used on the Big Boys.
Its really sad watching this video and feeling that you were born in the wrong era.....I mean Steam trains like the Big Boy were very elegant and very powerful in terms of sound and feeling as though they were alive. I almost wish that all the railroads would have a steam program to remember their heritage....but that won't happen. I wish it would be practical for UP to bring back the Big Boy...I would give up almost anything to see her run again. Hell they could make me pay them to work on her.
Good grief, that one was smoking like crazy! Was something wring with it. I liked the music but didn't fit the scene, the sound of the engines would have been great.
@Cardinals525 You are talking out of your exhaust pipe! ! That would be over 550 freight cars, also, they were engineered with a margin of safety which meant they didn't break down at normal running speed. There are a lot of myths out there concerning these fabulous beasts, which were designed to haul 3500 tons up the Wahsatch hill without helpers then 60 mph on the flat, and yes, they hauled bigger tonnage, especially after 1945, when they ran through to Cheyenne, over Sherman Hill.
When I saw this video, my jaw almost hit the floor. What the HELL is that ridiculous music got to do with the greatest locomotives ever built? Ridiculous. Are you actually kidding me? This is absolutely insane. I guess the only people competent to make videos of our railroad treasures must be old enough to remember them! You MUST be kidding!
great video, but one strong suggestion, please take down the music and just repeat the horn sounds threw the intir video. i mean common that girl singing is so not fitting to what we are looking at, it almost herts to hear it lol.
@cbrhs819dc Thanks for your opinion, but at the beginning of the video is the original sound of the Big Boy and then use the music in the video, because there were comments and remove the sound and use the music.
Strap failed. When that load was first lifted on the ship they should have held it about 6 inches off the deck lowered it and then caught the load. A two inch drop is no where as bad as what eventually did happen.
I watch this video +10 years ago, love to see this again 😊😊

It brings on a rush of adrenaline and tear to my eye to turn it all the way up and listen to that recording of that beautiful engine
that sound of a big boy stomping up Sherman hill gives me chills
Big boy sends chills up our spines
Ein schöner alter Dampflok Sound 😢😢😢 ich bin diese Lok gefahren
IMPRESIONANTE!, deberia ser la mas poderosa tambien!, estoy fascinado, saludos desde Argentina!

of all the forms of transportation vehicles, man has invented, nothing is more impressive than the steam locomotive!!!!!!!!!
trains in the 20 century (which is the 1900s) were scary when the blew the horns and the locomotive sound. WOOWEE
Big boys sounded like tap dancers
Nice! this is probably the best thing to ever happen in the world of steam :D
Oh my god, what an engine. Thanks for uploading these wunderful Videos, Fotos and the great sound of that hard working King of Railroad.
Thank you so very much for sharing this awesome video!!! I'm so nostalgic about the steam locomotives and this was the greatest. I agree, though, with some of the comments that the song could have been left out. Thank you again. Have a wonderful life.
Massive locos.. Great thanks !
This is a decent historical showcasing of the Union Pacific rr "Big Boy" class locomotives during their service careers.
2:48 It's like they harnessed the power of a volcano!
2:48
I know ive comented on this video before but every time i see a Big Boy move all i can think of is LIKE A BOSS and i wonder what would happen to a car if it was hit by one of these things on a full head of steam
0:10 My GODthat whistle will hunt me in my dreams... 😶
But that rhythm tho... Beautiful 😊👌
Now im going to take that whistle effect thank you
Thank you for these great stills/videos!

Peter Weggeman i agree
Fully agree!
UP just acquired Big Boy 4014 for reinstating in historical service.
Thanks for sharing. This was a massive machine. I liked and subbed to your channel 👍
They should bring those back. Awesome.
shartne they brought 4014 back already
type in big boy 2 thats perfect moreso in my mind, this videos also fantastic too Juancarlos cheers mate But big boy 2 video is hell amazing too!
i just did a pre order for the lionel big boy in O gauge...can not wait to get it.
this makes me want to take out my train set....

Since this comment, Union Pacific has reacquired #4014, and restored it to operating condition, as part of their Heritage Fleet.
The big boys would probably have scrapped themselves if they heard that song!
Beautiful machines, but today the EPA would shut then down in a second. Also, had to turn the sound off -- as far as I can tell, it had nothing to do with giant steam locomotives from the '40's and '50's. Thanks for uploading the video.
3:17 4014 IN HER PRIME!!!
And again at 3:54
She’s back in service!
I go back to this often, thanks for finding 4014 in this video!
25 of them were build by ALCO between 1941 and '44 during WW2, 17 were scrapped between 1961 and '63, only 8 were saved.
Fascinating video, but I can't watch it with that nauseating music.
Totally agree, it ruins an otherwise interesting documentation of the 4000 class.
Hideous soundtrack
It's an insult to all things 4 8 8 4.
The largest, the strongest, the best. Big Boy steam locomotive.
not the strongest
3:40 lokks like the same spot where the Challenger was filmed pulling a van train. Pretty cool video except for the music as others have mentioned.
I Was Waddling!
Simply Awesome, Would sure like to see one of these monsters in operation to day like the 3985. That would be so Awesome. Thank you for this video.
Stop hateing its fine with the music you find this same vid on youtube so calm your fire boxs and let it go
muy buenas fotos !!!!! por ahi lei que pesaba algo asi como 500.000 kg y media 40 metros o sea una animala de locomotora ... que espectaculo haberla visto andar no ???
those old ladies retired from service in 1961. 4014 will return in 2017 or 2018
bruce i hate to say but (he) will back under steam in 2019
Michael Wood well thats dissapointing...
not really he will be back in full fury
by the looks of it 4014 might even be back in service in late 2018
They have to test it before the Ogden event in 2019
These things could haul a 5.5 mile train at 80MPH over a mountain pass. Holy fucking shit
Like i love this vid good job m8😀
cant wait to see UP 4012 back on the rails again
Second half of the video sounds like the ending credits of a movie
well it came out friday that union pacific is going to fund a rebuild of a big boy & plan on runniing it on their system :)
smoke deflectors, these locomotives when working hard put out massive amounts of thick smoke and sometimes it was enough to were it was impossible for the crew to have a good line of site down the tracks so they implored these and when activated the would push the smoke away so the crew could see what was ahead of them. hope this clears things up :)

yes, the allegheny was heavier and more powerful, but the most powered was the N&W Y6B

chida locomotora pero donde la tienen guardada o de museo
Biggest yes. But sadly for UP fans as anyone knows number 3 in power. Go ask someone who knows.
from JAPAN
nice photgrafs
they're not building an NYC hudson. That group is actually restoring Santa Fe hudson #3463.

well said,no heart for sentiment, steam is still king and will be forever.

Well hot diggity damn! :D, wait has this been confirmed?
Obviously Juan has never heard Neil Young's "Southern Pacific" song.
Where do I find live action video with live action audio of this beast ?
The sounds of this giant should be music enough...
What are the two strange things over the exhaust that could be opened and closed?
to direct the smoke backwards i believe (holy shit you waited a decade to get an answer)
@@JQNAH thank you very much! 😃👍
Could someone tell me what that is closing over the smoke stack at 2:17 and what it was used for.
wounder why you didnt see 3 of these bad boy hook to geather, like you see train now day.
R.I.P big boy, she will always be the best and most amazing train! :'(
Don’t worry Union Pacific brought back 4014
@@TRARP05 wow, 8 years ago, I know 4014 has since has come back to life and she's a beaut, real credit to UPs heritage workshop
@@TheSpanishInquisition yeah I’m happy that up brought back 4014/I hope to see it next year since it’s 2020 excursion was canceled because of Covid 19
Thomas are you reffering to the hudson revival project? The group thats wants to build an NYC hudson?
@mogges1 It's because they were so powerful that they didn't need any help from anyone/anything that the UP had to offer.
Loved that footage! Not so much the music. Question, was that as big as steam locomotives got?
That Is The Biggest But There Are Triplexes That Are Big. (Sample 2-8-8-8)
Saca esa música por dio deja escuchar eso quetruene
did you see 4014 pause at 3:17 to see the number

Is that Ariana Grande singing or is that Kelly Clarkson or Jordin Sparks?
i love this song.
Pollution Hell, watch that grand ol' lady run!!!
@996TwinTurbo911 That dark black stuff obviously isn't steam. It's coal or oil smoke. And it comes out of the smokestack, not the steamstack.
