      Absolutely it’s a dated style of video production. Has a real 1980s and 1990s feel. Even the added in music. This could have been a Challenger video from Pentrex or Video Rails. It was a time of very inappropriate music added to train videos too. Music should really be steam appropriate which gives you two genres to choose from Big band from the decade to loco is from or old country like from Sun Records 1950s tunes

The third time though had to have been my favorite, because when the Big Boy came to Denver Union Station in 2022, a late running California Zephyr arrived next to the big boy at Denver, giving me the opportunity to see a steam powered train, a diesel powered train, and electric powered train(s) all in one setting.

Brings back memories growing up next to tracks during 60's-70's in Sumner Washington seeing these occasionally and the older diesel-electrics (I called them the old cyclopes style engines) which next to steam were my favorite. Quick story, my grandmother would go out and feed the engineers when they would be stopped along our property. We lived approximately 50-75ft from the track. Loved watching this video, thanks for bringing back some fond memories from my childhood!!!

    I saw this in New Orleans back in 2021. I was more interested in UP 4015 more than 4014. Sure I filmed them departing New Orleans (4014 getting the priority on the video footage), but my photos were mostly of 4015. Thankfully I saw 4014 before the steam shop crew refitted her with a twin vertical beam headlight in place of her original Pyle National headlight.

    Imagine if our tracks were 6-foot gauge! My great uncle said his 4-8-4 freight locomotive was frustratingly limited by the 4' 8-1/2" gauge.

    I wonder what Steve Lee thinks of UP's success with 4014. I remember in a Pentrex video where he was interviewed about 4023 and he said UP would never run a Big Boy as very few places to run it, will only travel a 100mls, too heavy for the modern road. It is a joy to see such a beast on the road.

    • @robertgift
      @robertgift 6 місяців тому

      Why too heavy for modern tracks? Thoughthatracks were made for heavier loads today and better than ever.

    38:59 As a European I very much appreciate you converting the American measurements into metric, but there seems to be a little conversion error here. I think you meant to say "over 570 metric tons" rather than kilograms. Because 570 kilograms is a "mere" 1256 pounds and change.

    I liked hearing the retired engineers honest experiences operating these large loco`s. Also noticed 4014 drive wheel slip several times at low speeds. The articulation is kind of tricky to see but once you realize how it works its kind of interesting to see.

    It is hard to imagine that there are container ship engines three times the size of these beasts that are well over 108,000 hp and weigh 2400 tons which is like four of the 4014's ! The largest is the Wartsila Sulzer RTA96-C 14-cylinder diesel engine.
