A guy from the local FVW in Virginia hooked me up with our local VSO in Southwest Virginia. I have brain cancer and had NO idea I was presumptive in both illness and deployment
I was awarded 100% P&T. Service connected compensation Aug 8 2008. For PTSD. Did not receive any SMC . Since 2012 I have had a bad right hip that now needs a hip replacement. And am seeing an orthopedist surgeon through communication care. I am 73 years old married. Served in 1972-74 USN. Tonkin gulf. Operation linebacker II. I was denied house bound and aid& attendence. Any advice ?
VSO at your county seat, is not who you want to go to to help a veteran file for disability. In NC, my spouse let them file after a heart attack and heart surgery, due to hypertension , Type 2 Diabetes, Sleep apnea, coronary/ischemic heart disease. He is a Vietnam vet, obviously Agent Orange was the No.1 reason to file. She did not even mention the agent orange registry. Just sent it as any Veteran that served in 60’s would still be covered, and only used 2 of the 5 diagnosis’. He waited 6 years. Called, it was Covid quarantine Sept., they still were not seeing face to face and sent the same 2 back in from 2014, no update. I worked on getting his medical records, getting nexus letters, tests, brain scans, sleep studies, mental health studies. And he filed intent to file, he went on a day I could not go, and went to the damn VSO office again. He assured me they had 2 new officers, I was licensed, and they only filed the generic Pact Act 5 claims. I was furious. He has no long term memory. He has to be locked in a bedroom at night, due to parasomnia, best word, for it. He yells, curses, falls out of bed, fractured ribs, hits the walls with fists, leaving broken bones and hole in Sheetrock, mumbles, then swings at air, he now gets up walks, laughs really loud talks to and answers ? He cannot remember 1974 to 3,4 months ago, this started 10,12 years ago, no he admitted it then. He got out of service in 1969, remembers a few years after, and before he went in. We started dating in late 1974, got married in Dec 1977, had 2 daughters in 1985 and 1987, they grew up, went to college , he does not remember me our 1st date or the girls birth to late high school college, very little . This includes selling our home , for 60% of value and not sure what happened to that? Zero, start over, he did work a very good job for 34 years, about 4,5 years after retiming, he then told me he remembered nothing, his Drs. had never heard this, he was going to VA, had 10% disability, I showed them videos of a typical night of him “sleeping”, was even given diagnosis of PTSD, abnormal brain matter shrinkage due to ? Pesticides lack of oxygen from sleep apnea, he ripped the mask off as soon as he started night terrors, . He made phone calls to his adviser of his 401k, had checks made out, picked up checks, went to our bank and got cash for each one several a year, for 8 years without my knowledge, and only found out through our tax accountant. He had no memory, I argued with him, I was sure this had to be lies. No one can call discuss selling stocks, know when check will be ready get it go to another bank cash it and what? Where, we’ve moved since then. And the VSO did NOT FILE ANY OF THIS, Even with a diagnosis of 6 other big problems. I cannot imagine not getting back pay. He worked for UPS, had a 401k through them . Cashed in 30 year old life insurance policy, I am not even on his pension survivorship no life insurance, a 25 year mortgage, no savings anywhere. And no one saw it. A mental health/ psychologist at the VA did not listen to me, watched videos of him acting out for 30 minutes straight. He does not know he does anything like this, so they ignore me after asking me to come with him. I will never go back. I will edit this and add the severe personality change to mean angry abusive behavior, the I don’t enjoy doing anything or anyone, so it did not affect his social life, we have NO SOCIAL LIFE, NEVER LEAVE HOME, CAN’t afford a life. Oh he has his C& P exam tomorrow. Can you imagine how that will go?

All you can really trust the VSO to do is push the buttons to move the paperwork forward.
