Metallica Blackened from ...And Justice For All (Bass Cover)

- I don't think I would be a musician if it wasn't for thrash metal, and I don't think I would love thrash if I hadn't listened to it every day of my freshman year riding to school in my brother's car with ...And Justice For All blazing out of the speakers.
This album is an oddity...a killer metal album with no bass on it. So I put some bass on it. The modern tone I went for might not be the most era-specific, but it felt like a good fit to me.
This song was a real challenge, and I love playing it. Enjoy.

Taylor Swift's bassist, everyone. What a fucking beast.
Been a fan since he started that gig!
ooh yes!!
I can't stand Taylor Swift, but I will admit he's slaying on that bass.
Yes but can he clean her cats’ litter boxes? I would do both. ❤ Anything she needs.
2nd
Brother, I think you should just go ahead and do the whole album at this point!! Friggin' awesome!!
That's the plan!
@@AmosHeller Yes, can't wait!!!
@@AmosHelleryou play this better than Robbie Trujillo for sure
+1, whole album is a epic idea
@@AmosHellerYES!
There's a reason why certain pop acts like Taylor Swift, Kylie Minogue, etc, sound amazing on tour...LIVE MUSICIANS !!! Amos is one hell of a bassist!
So much yes on Kylie. I saw her on the X tour and i remember thinking "like a drug" reminded me of sad but true because of the drum sound. Haven't seen Taylor but i'm sure it's amazing.
Amen to that !!
New kids on the block their band at the rockin Rio was great. Got caught listening back in the day. 😅 Took. While to live Down. Lol
@@jasonsmith4291 Music & art are all personal taste my man. Gotta admit...i liked Everybody (Backstreet's Back) when it came out, corny as it was lol
@@4stringz. Hanging Tough! 🤘So true at 53 now I still love it when u here a toe tapping diddy.
Dan McClellan posted this and I'm so happy to hear this!
I work in the industry, tour videographer (Dream Theater, Rod Morgenstein) and these pop stars have the best musicians on Earth backing them. I guarantee if Swift said she wanted to cover Metropolis Pt 1, they’d nail it, which would also be hilarious.
Metropolis part 1 is one of my favorite songs ever. Such a unique piece of music
I love DT!!
@@AmosHeller I’ll tell you something I learned about DT, after working with Jordan. They’re not trying to intentionally write difficult music. They don’t really communicate with each other verbally in theory language when they’re writing. I got to ask them about it. They just… are that good, like on a level we can’t imagine or perceive, especially Jordan. John plays 40,000 notes to him and Rudess instinctively doubles and triples it with both hands, like he lives in a musical 4th dimension. I can play, was a child prodigy guitarist and standing next to them and watching them play is enough to make you want to just quit because you’ll never be that good. If you cover a DT song, you’ll probably get invited back stage, if you don’t already know them.
They have among the best musicians, because they are all Metalheads, like this one and Nuno Bettencourt. I think there aren’t many musicians that don’t like Metal, because they understand what not musicians do often misunderstand: it’s music and not some noise.
Cheers to Newsted, he wrote some sick bass lines for that masterpiece of an album. And your interpretation is sick as well, what a nice job!
James didn't writte blackened it's a Jason song that james liked...
@@Loicvers and?
With the trend of bassists wanting to slap everything it’s refreshing to see someone just play, and play spectacularly. Amazing job
Until today, I was always disappointed hearing Jason Newsted’s parts being covered by a bass player using fingers instead of a pick. They were always choppy, uneven. This is an incredible cover! Solid, even. LOVE IT!
I think you just made D.D. VERNI explode onto his battle vest!
AWESOME!!!
That bass riff at the intro just ripped everything to shreds, imagine that opening the ...And Justice For All album! Imagine that rumbling tone throughout the entire album, it would have been a game changer and a fitting tribute to the mighty Cliff Burton.
Metallica is the biggest metal band in the world, toured the world, became a household name, made millions to their names and remastered all their classic albums. It's a shame that they didn't remaster the AJFA album the way Jason Newsted actually recorded it. Big up Amos Heller for doing "Justice" to the song 👊🏼🇧🇩
You'll be happy to know that when Guitar Pro was released, they released the AJFA isolated tracks. Some legend remixed it. ua-cam.com/video/6kqTcLwUYj8/v-deo.html
Remastering is not the same as remixing. I believe Metallica lowered the bass out of respect for Cliff. It was their way of saying, this is what we sound like without him. I only came to this conclusion recently. This is their best record in my opinion and thats saying alot. If you want to hear the entire album with bass, search “and justice for Jason” here on YT. Its great.
@@ernestbuckley8671 Did you stop at "remix" to make sure i understood the difference and then tell me i should check out the exact link that I posted? :)
Not sure what you`re referring to.@@briangeorgebowes
@ernestbuckley8671 they did it to mess with Jason. It had shit all to do with respecting Cliff. They literally went back on tour 2 months after he died.
Killer work Amos. Now...to achieve true god level status you just need to get Taylor to do Blackened as an encore and bust this baby out live! ;)
She’s done just about everything else, so I’d love for her to roll out a rock album next. She’s got the perfect band, her writing and vocal chops are impeccable, and I think it would sound brilliant. It would also make my inner metalhead happy.
As a long time fan of Metallica, and Jason; thank you!
The tone. The playing. All spot on. Played with pure love.
That Yamaha seems like a really damn good bass. While I don't have pro money, nor necessity for one I will definitely look at a mid-grade model.
Amos, I had no idea you even had a channel. Good to see you. So nice to see we have the same wear marks on both BBP's Great job! 🤘🤘🤘🎸🎸🎸
That was so long overdue! Thank you, Amos! It’s like a vindication for Jason
Newsted! Now can someone do one with a decent kick sound…
At least live I got to hear Jason's bass. He absolutely rocked. His bass solo is still the most memorable thing from the show - hunched over this green light, playing sick wah bass. 1990 Wembley Arena.
Would love to see J & L give in and remaster Justice with the original bass. I mean, they don't seem allergic to $. Thankfully we get about 26 bassists upload a version of the AJFJ album each year. I feel like I've listened to them all. This one's absolutely killer Amos.
Holy moly that bass tone, I went and bought some Quarter Pounders just because of this video and put them in my PJ.
My daughter is a Taylor fan and I am a Metallica fan. Excellent work! See ya on November 10 in Argentina! How nice would it be to see Taylor and James do something together! they both love country music and are excellent musicians. Next time Pulling teeth Anesthesia!
What I love about Amos and musicians like him is I feel they're driven by the thing that makes people fans. He can rock a stadium with TS because (after 1000s of hours of practice honing his technique in a variety of styles) in his guts he gets what it means to just frickin' love a song. Infectious energy.
100%! He's got the love for music as a whole
And the break where he air drums lets us see the kid in him is still alive and well.
As a huge Metal fan and a huge taylor fan, this is so so awesome!
Very cool, Amos. I remember listening to that album with Jesse-I still think it is Metallica’s best work.
Thanks for sharing. This is a great CHS memory for me.
Now we will be waiting on a call of ktulu and orion cover. Amazing work!
This is absolutely fkng unreal. I never actually said out loud "metallica fkd that album up" but here we are. They caged the jason beast😊
GODDAMN that's a sick tone and some fuckin killer 4 stringin! If it wasn't a million dollars a ticket I'd go to a TSwift show just to see you shred. So sick.
I was there when "And Justice" dropped and changed my life forever... I was also there last year during the first batch of Eras Tours show, which was also a life-defining moment... to think that both of those circles in my life would Venn Diagram overlap like this is, no joke/no sarcasm, abso-fuckin-lutely beautiful. Double horns todays, mates ('cause one set just ain't enough): 🤘🤘
Session and touring musicians are awesome cause they have to be,no twenty takes for them nail it or we get someone else.just great no words!!!
The sideways face you do at 0:43 is worth the entire clip! The fact that you're absolutely KILLER on bass is the icing on the cake! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
He’s back!!! 🤘🏻
Man this makes me happy! I absolutely love this album and especially Blackened!
This is incredible. The entire album is a bass backing track. A bassist’s well-produced playground, if you will
Just caught the article on music radar. This is sick. Such an aggressive tone to match one of the more aggressive albums.
Please keep the Metallica covers coming. Your insane and that's the best bass tone I've ever heard 🤟🏻
This is how the mix should be 🤘
No because its so loud in the mix you can't hear the actual guitar and the album itself doesn't need a loud bass or actually any of it because this tone sound james created is raw-stomping and hard as hell.
Yeah, I agree, it's too loud for a full mix, but it's a bass cover so it's supposed to be too loud. It does sound awesome though and would definitely fit the mix if it was just mixed into it (aka before all the master compression and stuff).
Metallica desperately need to remaster their old stuff. It would be amazing. And yeah, the bass is turned up purposefully here because it's a bass cover, obviously.
I disagree. Yeah, I wouldn't mind a version of ...ajfa where the bass is audible, but they don't "desperately need to" since those albums are already classics and already did the damage back when they came out. New remixes/remasters just won't make any difference at this point, tbh.
@@Pauligrinder k
Omg… that bass tone is to die for! I want the BBP34 in the vintage white…
Even Jason played with a pick... crazy tone and even crazier playing!
This guy must have calloused fingers. That's why Jason started using a pick, cuz he ripped the skin off his fingers.
Taylor Swift and Metallica. 2 of my absolute favorite things. Fantastic job!!
Jason was such a beast and a great back up vocalist as well. I'm still mad he left. You did a great job!!!!!
Always a great day when Amos uploads! You've been missed on the Internet❤
Super sick cover and tone brother!
Thank you!
Amos, this is just amazing! As the owner of a BBP34, I can't get over the tone of yours with those Quarter Pounders!
THIS ROCKS! Took my wife to see TS at the Sunday Seattle show and we had a great time. I am a Metal Head and felt bit out of place but you guys rocked for 3.5 hours and the everyone there was really nice in the crowd.
Unquestionably my favorite Justice for Jason offering yet, man; mega kudos.
Absolutely metal outstanding. I started banging my head immediately. It's no wonder a superstar would pick this dude
Never, ever, considered picking up a bass to learn how to play it but the way you do it.
Wow 😮
I think I just might.
Mighty impressive sir!!!
Great job. Best metallica album hands down played with such passion. You have my like, sir.
I shall treat it with the respect it deserves
My favorite Metallica song, ever. I just discovered your channel after listening to you on the SBL Podcast. Big fan of yours, my 6 year old daughter watches the Eras Tour every day (not kidding). Awesome cover, Amos.
i freaking love this
1:47 I was hoping for that 👏👏 Awesome cover!
"Blackened" is the first Metallica song I ever heard and it still one of my favourite songs in general! Absolute banger and you did it great justice! Amazing playing!
I could never ‘get’ how that note on the E string 6th fret fit in with this riff until seeing it here. This is so awesome and the bass tone is perfect.
Thank you! Yeah solving the left hand puzzle is a big part of it
@@AmosHeller I can’t wait to hear the rest of the album (feel free to skip the original order and just jump straight to Harvester…) 😆
Return of the legend 💪
Impecable yet facemetling bass! Get this man a metal band please! Bravo! 👏
Legit goosebumps... I cannot stop listening to this... It's perfect, literally perfect.
Duuuuuude! This is fantastic! It is nice to be able to hear the bass parts to this song too! Great Job! And you are playing for Taylor Swift!? You need to convince her to cover this song! lol :D
Man, that brought back some memories. I still remember popping that cassette (yeah cassette) in the Alpine rocking my 6x9's. That kick sounded amazing in my car. Awesome cover, I have a 12 year old daughter who loves Taylor Swift and I go show her videos of her performing with groups like Def Leppard hoping she will like the music I grew up on. Sadly it never works.
Watched you perform the other night in Seattle. KIller!🫶🏻 You and the Agency are the clincher for my TS fandamonium! Ive listened to justice a thousand times and this was the best blackened I’ve heard. As a bass enthusiast I’ve wished even Rob could stand out as well as this mix… thank Amos
Awesome slab of bass beef added where it was desperately needed!
I loved the work done on "And justice for Jason"
Now if someone could do something about the sound of Lars' drums :P
That was absolutely amazing!! Please do the rest of the album. Then I'll actually like listening to 'And Justce...' after all these years. 🙂👌
This album finally gets some justice. Love this album ,as a bass player, I would often imagine the bass turned up to stomp mode. You achieved what those songs are missing
Damm dude, very nice cover, the sound mix is killer too. I'd totally love to blast the whole album with your pro touch!
This was badass! Loved it. Sounds like we had a similar thrash influenced childhood way back then. Keep up the awesomeness! 🤘
Somewhere Cliff is smiling. Monster chops and tone! 🤘
You my friend have made such a great song even better. Just wow is all I can say
Big, meaty tone, the slides in there are just sick. Whole thing just sounds so fucking good. Looking forward to more, sir!
Wow. Talk about a professional. The attention to detail and consistency is next level.
Holy frickballs dude, this sh*t ROCKS!!
Do, this is incredible! and besides playing the bass with your fingers gives the song a more beastly point and makes you think how it would sound if Cliff had done it, if you set out to do the whole album believe me I would download it and listen to it every day while having coffee 😂 Rock 4ever👌🤘
This never gets old!
Eres grande!!!! Te ganaste otro suscriptor.
Fucking amazing, Amos. Matt B is an old drummer bro of mine from his Denver days. He’s an amazing metal and punk drummer, as I’m sure you know. Maybe the whole TS backline could do a few metal tunes and upload them. Minds would be blown.
This is amazing. Giving a whole new dimension to this huge classic. Justice is done for Jason Newsted. Thanks!
Dude you are amazing. I love old metallica and TS. Much respect 🤘😻
...And Justice for the song! Saludos desde Colombia!!!
What an absolutely incredible job!
This is amazing! I loved re-listening to this for “the first time”!
💪🏻😎🎸
Holy Smokes, bro you are DIALED in. Thanks for that. That was the closest thing to Cliff I have ever heard....... Ever. Thanks for bringing it. Sonically, the closest thing I have heard since 1986
This man is so skilled he added a few things to the song, this song is a joke for him, this is actually umbeliable.
Welcome back bro! What a freaking gnarly tone, warm with bite and super supportive 🎉 how it should have been from the beginning!
Bravo, Sir! Most excellent performance and video. #theinfinitecalling
Oh what could have been! Justice is such a sick record. Glad to see you back on UA-cam, you're a big inspiration for me to play more bass!
What an incredible, well-done and badly-needed addition to a great song! Thanks for doing this!
Something like this was a long time coming. To hear this with actual bass is a revelation. Brilliant.
Clean, powerful performance, killer tone...and justice was done! 🤘
BADASS. The tone, the playing, so...badass. Imagine if this is what the record sounded like.
How it always should have sounded. Nice job Amos!
Dear Amos, I totally relate to that feeling about trash and Metallica. Salute.
Steamed though a system with a sub and just wow. Actual tone besides the kick drum. Takes the song to a whole new lvl
My Favorite Song from my Favorite Metallica album. Sounds f n awesome
Holy shit! This is amazing dude.
Dude, that is awesome. Killer tone, killer playing.
That tone. You're a beast on bass bro! Keep it up
That was an absolute H000T to watch. Hats off!
Sounds awesome with the bass cranked, gnarly 🤘😎🤘
this is satisfying AF, thank you for sharing
My favorite Metallica song. Jason wrote the most of the riffs and we could never hear him in the mix. …And Justice for All introduced me to Prog Metal.
You can’t just tease us with one track dude!
We need more! 🤘🏻😍
Charles Bertoud needs to also do a song from this album with some bass in it. WooHoo!
Sick "cover" bro, this is totally amazing!
Flawless execution and incredible tone (I think the modern, Darkglassy edge puts the emphasis on bass that the song/album should have had all along)! Thanks for posting the breakdown for your signal chain, as well!
Thank you! I feel like the modern tone fits the mix
Love this song, and you made my day... Thank you!!!!
Amazinggg cover Bro! Cheers from Argentina
Absolutely awesome!! I love that tone.
Killer tone and playing dude! Loved it.
