No matter how passionate you think you are about bass guitar, watching any video with Ian increases that passion exponentially.
Right!
absolutely
He's been such an incredible addition to this channel.
100%
I agree
Literally no one can teach like Ian. And he can smash any genre of bass playing on earth with all the joy in the world and without ever looking like he's trying. Love this dude.
Ian gotta say.Youve taken SBL, podcasting and learning to a whole nother level.Your detail and precise attention to every facet from gear to time signatures is unparalleled.Youre the full package.Much respect to you!
Dude, please do more gear reviews like this… You are one of the best communicators and love your content… (Love you too Scott 😁)
Would love to see your take on the SA C4 (envelope filters and synths) Atlas compressor, Broughton Josh Wah… I love when you review pedals and use them in the right context… Keep em coming… ✌️😎
I just love Ian! As soon as I saw the announcement for this pedal, I was intrigued. I read the specs and description, I knew I wanted it. I watched this video, and Ian has made me even more excited for it. I don't know if my next pedal purchase will be tomorrow or a year from now, but I know it will be this pedal.
Thank you, Ian and everyone at SBL, you keep me excited to practice and write.
600 $ new..!!! I don’t know if it’s worth that
Can get one used for 450-550
@@mrmatthew2443 I have no problem with used gear, it is often the way to go.
Ian I would love to see more HX Stomp videos/presets/demo thingies and perhaps more preamp pedal demos. Love the gear demos! Brent, VT
Gotta do the Stomp!
Great review! An A/B of the pedal vs clean tone is super helpful. Evening out the levels (clean is much lower) would help even more. I know that the pedal adds gain, but the super quiet clean channel makes it hard to really get tone quality differences.
Yes - classic way to make A stand out over B - As a recording engineer you really have to watch that with compressors
Yep to both comments here. And it would have been super easy to fix this in post. It's not like he would have had to spend time during the video level-matching.
Agree
He is being paid to pretend that this sounds good - what do you expect?
@@adriangarver3246 do you prefer compressor last or first in the pedal chain?
I’ve bought 3 Darkglass pedals in the past, so made a pact to be satisfied with what I have a while back. All their gear sound great, but face it, if you buy something , they will still release something newer, more advanced, sexier, etc. a few months later, and you’ll be left thinking , “ ooo, I want that. “
I'll just say that Darkglass has a fair chunk of my money. Also, I have NO regrets! 😊
Same! I have 2 X ultras I had the Alpha Omega and now the Photon
@@bassimprovjams3772 what is your favourite?
@@gary999t Haven't had a problem with that, I've been playing my b3k and vintage ultra for over 4 years now
I don't want the channel to change to JUST gear, but I do want more bass focused gear videos. This was great.
Really enjoyed this video. My only suggestion is similar to one posted earlier: make the output volume during the A/B test more even. This way we can hear the true tone difference. Since I am not someone who normally wants any distortion on my signal, I am extremely interested in the EQ, cab simulation, and compression. Thank you. Great job!!!!
Thanks for including an active bass. It’s crazy how different some circuits react to active setups.
Agreed. The DG stuff plays so nicely w active basses.
The Alpha Omega Photon let's you select between active and passive pick ups when you connect to the Darkglass app, i assume this one let's you do the same
This just might be a new item on my to get -list. I haven't really done much pedal work although I've been playing for almost two decades! I think there's some value in learning not to rely solely on compression in order to get a consistent tone, but there are some things that you just need a pedal for. And these were some really sweet sounds. Super cool video, Ian, and it's easy to believe that you enjoy making them. It just shines through! Inspiring stuff
That Pbass riff and tone with the pick was fantastic
💯💯💯
Oh! Yeah, brother! This has to be about the best edited video you've ever made! Can really feel your excitement about the gear as well. With your quality experience and knowledge, along with your reputation with synth-sounding-bass, I will most definitely watch any and all gear vids you put out. With SBL quality standing behind you as well, GO FOR THE GEAR VIDEOS! We're with you!
I use the Photon as my core tone preamp/distortion/DI/compressor/cab sim. Killer unit, I expect this is much the same. The HX Stomp next to it on my board gives me access to literally any effect I could ever want, while the Photon keeps my core tone intact no matter what.
While I own a couple of DG pedals (Vintage Microtubules,Harmonic Booster) and while I like these a lot the DG "metal" isn't my bag. But this Infinity does look to be the total package as you demonstrate.Very useful.Good job!
agreed, I love heavy distortion but the DG tone just doesn't do it for me...
@@spothra8862 That's why I like the Vintage Microtubules, it's in a different zone than their BK stuff and it has great control of tones. The Harmonic Booster,a great clean preamp that has tremendous EQ.
That's why my favorite pedal of theirs is the Vintage Ultra. But as far as I know, they haven't done a pedal like this one for their Vintage Ultra. I basically want my Vintage Ultra pedal but with more functionality.
@@rome8180 This pedal has models of both the B3K and Vintage lines
Do more gear!!
Find whatever compressor you like the most and teach us to set it with our ears and not our eyes.
Good call.
Yes ! Exactly what i was thinking about !
It should cost a million dollars to have this guy talk about your gear
Thanks for this video Ian, you are knocking it out of the park with your enthusiasm and love of the bass along with Scott and SBL! I would love to see more dives into HX stomp presets and I have already tried one of your synth patches and I love it! Thanks again for what you are doing and creating!
After Ian's great review, I'm seriously considering the Darkglass MIcrotubes Infinity as my single pedal for a live rig. It seems like it would be flexible enough to handle the variety of styles I play. I'm excited to try one!
Dude, you know your stuff when it comes to theory, gear and whatnot but what I like about you is you just throw down some super cool, groovin' BASS! Keep up the good work!🤘🤘
Thanks Ian I love listening to you geek out on gear. Your such a positive voice online I really dig your content and this infinity!
So awesome to hear Jeremey! 🙌🏻
LOVE the gear videos. It can be tough to test most things out unless you have great local shop, so gear videos are super useful
Absolutely. In fact, I think I will now pick one of these up and get rid of my earlier Alpha Omega Darkglass and a Darkglass compressor. Great review Ian and you and Scott are fantastic together. You both show so much fun and joy in what you do. It’s contagious and so needed. Thank you both truly for such a great channel and for all you do for bass education.
I love Ian's excitement about bass. That's exactly how I feel sometimes. Bass is such a great instrument and we're so fortunate to have such a first-rate channel like this to all geek out on it together.
💯💯💯
First of all, I love the new gear analysis pieces you do, keep them up. I would be interested in a bit more info about this one. Very fascinating piece of gear. I'd love to hear back from you after you try the audio interface functionality of it too.
Great video! thanks for sharing. I would love to see a video on the Jad Freer Audio CAPO pedal please : )
Love that pedal. Need to do it.
oh mannnn . that preset#2 is golden .. the cab sim is also magical ..
The cab sims are insane… So many amazing options… I just had to pick one but they were all incredible!
@@IanMartinAllison i know .. been in the market of an o/d pedal for the past 6wks looking for that little extra grit ... checked out many review/demos on the internet and was never impressed by any of them until your preset#2 that that blew my mind today ... the perfect o/d sound I could've imagined. .. that's so clear, punchy, round n smooth ... oh mannnn .. and I gotta figure a way to play like u first Ian .. lol. great thanks to your response!
@@IanMartinAllison pulled the trigger and ordered mine ... it's ALL YOUR FAULT Ian ....
Love darkglass! They are way over-hated. They do not just have one sound as you display in this video. People just need to utilize the controls on both their bass, pedal, and amp better and remember that lots of tone comes from your fingers/pick
Agreed my man! The scope of the tone possibilities are fantastic, definitely not a one-trick pony! 🔥
They're hated? Why? Their stuff is so good.
@@joshuadelaughter7968 Because most people who by Darkglass use it for the “Nolly” metal tone. They are also way more expensive than other brands. Get what you pay for though.
@@joshuadelaughter7968for some reason it became niche cool to hate dark glass 🤷 I think haters are slowly going away with the ultra and this line of pedals
Good lord the b-string riffage on that Mike Lull bass made hair grow on my chest 🤘🤘🤘
Magnum PI
This was a really fun video to watch! I'm inspired and keen to try this pedal. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
My current bass fly rig:
Boss TU-3 Tuner
Pigtronix Philosopher Bass Compressor
Darkglass "Microtubes B7K Ultra V2" DI w/ cab sim on/off, limited usb functionality, aux in, ground lift, headphone out w/ preamp side and distortion side on 2 separate stomp buttons
Makes most any rig SING using my passive Fender Jazz Bass...
So the "Microtubes Infinity" would literally replace my most commonly used pedalboard in 1 shot for less $$$, retain and likely improve my sound, and would fit in my tightest gig bag for ease of carry and simplicity of rig, without a Pedaltrain Nano+ and power brick, so its a big win overall being all in one.
👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻🔥🔥🔥
Love the sound of this pedal! Definitely might need to get one as I don't have a large amp with me currently. This will help beef up any sound!
Ohhhh dear. At 7:15 I drooled just a little.....
Drool worthy for sure. I still do when I pick it up.
I bought the pedal because of Ian's energy and joy. I haven't got it yet, but it's on the way.
Ian, much respect to you! Thanks for your passion!
I know you already talked a lot about the HX stomp and the pedals you like to use in it as well as the order of the pedals.
But I would love to see you create a preset from start to finish, especially the compressor in the HX stomp because I feel like this is the most important part, having the potential of really improving all the pedals that come afterwards or completely ruining the tone. Would really appreciate it if you could cover this.
Thank you.
Thanks for making my decision harder. I was planning on adding an omicron to my pedalboard so I had another option besides my B7K. Now I have to consider one of them as well. Darkglass are amazing and your videos are awesome. Just the right ratio of information and passion.
Mike Lull + Darkglass = Ian Bassface 🤘🏾
Love Darkglass!
Just as the initial P Bass demo shows, you can use it to just dial in some bite which adds so much to ones tone
Ian is such a badass. Preset 2 riff is so fire
Ian - I LOVE what you're doing with this channel right now! I want you to talk to me about fanned fret basses (aka Dingwall - but not limited to…). What are you general reflections? What do you Love. Whadya Hate? Hungry to hear…
I did a Dingwall versus Gibson video for SBL that you should absolutely check out!
When comparing any sounds, the human ear will always prefer the louder one. Level matching is essential for a fair comparison. These direct sounds were half the volume of the Darkglass sounds.
Yeah I wonder if that was intentional
Love those two Lakland’s in the back corner
They made those for me in like 2006 - 2007 when Dan was still a part of the company. Golden era.
Awesome pedal! I love my Darkglass ADAM! Definitely my desert island pedal and the best part of my board.
The slap line around 2:45 is SMOKIN. That’s how you play slap: less = more. Nice how he’s just ahead of the best
👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
I’ll join the SBL Academy right now if there’s a video with Ian teaching the preset #2 bass riff. It’s so rad!
Oh yeah. Mine is coming tomorrow and will be the hub of my board. I think its a good way to consolidate pedals and make room on the board.
Let us know how you like it!
Hi Ian (and SBL), I love your energy.
I’m curious about the Two Notes ReVolt Bass Preamp. If you could make demo, that would be great. And as others have noted - please keep volume at the same level when disengaged.
Wow, what a great pedal! But, the one thing that I would love to see in these types of pedals ( especially at this price point) is phantom power! I have the Tech 21 VT DELUXE PEDAL, besides that I do love the sounds that I can achieve, the thing that really sets it apart is the phantom power. I’ve been moving away from using bass rigs on stage to plugging straight into the board. Using my VT deluxe allows me to do that without any external power source needed. Bass-pedal-mixer, done! Thanks for the great review! I hope that more of these great pedals start incorporating phantom power.
Spot on. I have rhe Bass Driver Deluxe & the phantom power aspect is so useful. I was gutted that the Tech 21 Dug Pinnick pedal doesn't have it...too small for a battery compartment as well!
I have a B7K Ultra and it's great, I've used it for metal tones and for performing worship music at a church all the time. Now I kind of want one of these for the onboard compression and tuning, seems cool.
Would love to hear more about bass gear from you guys. I still need some kind of compressor and have always wanted a good bass chorus and possibly delay/octave/fuzz pedals. I just don't really know what's good for bass and it's hard to try things out these days!
I'm really loving the gear videos to be honest. Your reviews are really inspiring. So much so that I bought a Helix Stomp, so my request would be to do a breakdown of that one.
How you set your presets etc.
Thanks
Need to do that!
Great video! Love your enthusiasm and passion ❤️
I will happily watch anything with Ian in it.
Shout out from Minnesota! I live in Buffalo! Love your bass playing, so infectious. I had no idea you were around here.
Damn, wanna hang out and slapuhdabass?!
That intersection at Calhoun square suucks. Hah, Mpls represent! Nice demo also ;)
Just got one. Holy Mother of God. It's beautiful. Best piece of gear I've ever bought.
SBL - I love the enthusiasm. I humbly suggest one change - an issue with this demo is that the pedal on/off levels are not gain matched in post production. Most audio sources sound better turned up louder, that does not mean the tone is better. It is difficult to immediately form a fair opinion when the demo has been biased towards the product in this manner.
Hey Jeffrey - Thankyou for the feedback, I'll pass this onto the team to take on board for future gear videos. Big up! 👊🏻
Agree 100%. They know this, so why? Hmmmm….
@@dumyes I'd assume that as well given Ian has what looks like a Neve 1073DPX in his rack and some bass traps in the corner, but perhaps it was a simple oversight... too bad!
@@devinebass Thank you for forwarding the feedback. Gain leveling would go a long way towards a fair evaluation of before and after tone. Appreciating, JM 👍
Beautiful Mike Lull bass. Sounds perfect with the pedal.🎉
👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
Wow, now "I have a dream" to have this pedal. Unfortunate, it must be costly in Brazil.
Great review man.
I love they included both the b3k and vintage circuits in this unit. This could replace my sansamp bass driver which I has been using for years. It has way more features.
Please, PLEASE do a breakdown for the Helix stomp!
Awesome review, thank you!
Love the gear reviews - love this. Thanks!
Love these pedals I've got the ADAM and it is the power house of my rig, gigging XLR to desk with no amp definitely lighter on the road and also as a audio interface at home or live
Tim Lefebvre hipped me to the ADAM. Great box
Always good to talk about gear, would be nice to have a proper review on the Radial Firefly
I believe you have just shown me my next bass pedal.
🤯🤯🤯 great review and nice chops bro!
Cool pedal! Definitely like seeing your take on great reviews!
Next time, include the price!
$599
@@IanMartinAllison cough, cough, yeah....no
Great performance great sound. These all-in-one petals are super slick, but they would totally overwhelm me
I think it is better to start out with single pedals then as you get to know them, consolidate to multis if you want
Ian, you are the best - love your videos! (and Darkglass stuff :-) )
Cheers Peter!
That preset #2 sounds a lot like my Pearce BC-1 preamp with clean and overdrive channels combined.
Love that pre!
Loved that video! I have the X Ultra which also gives me everything I need (except for an audio interface 😂) The XU is a perfect practice and rigging gig, giving clean tone, distorted tone, low band compression and full band compression 🥰 just don't know if I want to take the plunge and go for this pedal yet...
Hi there,
thanks for that great presentation! I loved to see it from beginning to end. This box really sounds great and I really understand, why you are so much excited.
I play bass since a couple of years. I have a Zoom B1.X pedal board and I loved it. But I finally went back to the clean sound without any effects. OK - that's for sure a very personal taste, if using effects or not, but 550 Euros is worth to think it over.
Greetings from rhine-main-region, germany
Alex
I Love all the gear stuff and I would really love to get more stuff of hx stomp - all the sounds you get out of are amazing, And btw. - how do you get this amazing sound on the videos ? All direct out of your pedalboard / noble preamp in the Interface ? Or do you use amp and box for these videos ? Thanx for doing all the stuff !
All direct! This was the Darkglass into the computer!
Question. If i wanted to this on my board, could i place it so i would get the distortion in the middle of my signal chain but still be able to get all my FX in the DI or would i have to place it last?
Man, the growl on that 5th string is to die for.
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Please do a Source Audio C4 synth review. I'm on the verge of buying one and would love to watch your take on it, 'cause when it comes to synth bass, you're the man!
Source audio is the shit, much better than dark glass imo
I do love watching when you really enjoy yourself Ian! I love the sounds, but I was wondering if it gets a real tube sound like a SVT or B-15? The name Microtubes evokes that this has a over all tube sound. Thanks, more gear to check out.
The first sound that I use is a bit B15-esque to me… And definitely it can get that cool Ampeg SVT thing as well. I didn’t show the clean tube preamp but that is an excellent sound as well.
This video may well mark the moment Ian Martin Allison became the Bill Nye of bass and bass pedal videos
I am selling my ADAM Darkglass pedal NOW... and I will buy this one just after... because this one fits more to my philosophy about the bass...
👊🏻🔥
@@devinebass ma new pedal is on its way... I'll tell you if it can replace my whole pedalboard... 😉 but I bet it will.
amazing review ! Thank you !!! I Would like to know more about the audio interface mode...another video maybe? My best regards ☀️✌️
Loved the review. Gear reviews are good. More of these. 👍
Yes I'd love to see some non-bias reviews on pedals of the same effect from cheapest to most expensive
Yes, more gear reviews! Fantastic review/demo! I think I may need to trade in my Alpha/Omega for one of these. :)
Ian your reviews and demos are always fantastic. I must ask a question.....what strings are on that P Bass. It sounds INCREDIBLE!!
Cheers Pat! They’re Dunlop super bright nickels.
this guy Ian is cool, appreciate all the info and attitude!
Would I like to see more gear reviews? Well, first off let me say that my favorite stuff that you do are these deep dives into particular bassists like the Moving Pictures thing. I am totally addicted to those.
But as an Intermediate, beginning-to-gig bassist gear can be a really confusing area for me. I need to know 1) what a piece of gear can do for me (application) 2) how it works (the more intuitive the better) 3) if it works for me in a variety of situations (home practice, group practice and gigging basically, but maybe recording too).
One thing that has piqued my interest is the Boss Katana amp (particularly the 210) as, with it's apparently decent output in terms of volume and it's many built in effects and presets, could tick many boxes for me. I wouldn't mind seeing a review on that.
Nothing lets the Lo-B string speak, quite like Darkglass Electronics.
Keep the gear reviews coming!
💯💯💯
Yessss more gear videos ! Future impact pedal.
I have one of those! I should review it
Yes! Break down some gear dudes! I’d love to see an amp showdown as well!as a dark glass head owner and lover, I’ve recently been playing some vintage fender bass heads and have been pretty inspired. Should I stick with the dark glass head or will the pedals suffice?
You can get a lot of the same sounds using the pedals, though the pedals do sound a little different (B7k vs AO Ultra for example)!
Another great video! I dare anybody to watch any one of Ian's videos and not get superpumped and want to pick up their bass! You're an inspiring addition to SBL. I have to go play my bass now! 🤘
You guys reviewing the Alpha Omega pedal is one of the reasons i bought it.
Pedals... still a whole new world to me. Which pedal is the most important or the one you should try first? And why? Right now I have a cheap volume pedal (used in the intro of an Orphan Spiders song), and a tuner.
Awesome review Ian 🤘🏻
Killer sounds Ian! Are those presets 3 that you setup yourself or are they the default presets out of the box? Would love some insight and getting those tones.
I made them in about 15 min after unboxing the pedal
Yea more gear talk!!!
Also would you use this pedal with your Helix?
Thanks Ian you are the man!!!!!
Great. I have no money and now I want this. Really informative, well-made Video!
🙏🏼💸😂
Great playing. I love these gear reviews but I cannot think of any gear for you to review
More of these types of gear reviews, please.
