Best Way To Clean/Rid Chicken Coop of Poop - Keep Coop Smelling Fresh - Perfectly Every Time!!!!!!

- Wow, never thought 111,800 people would want to view this video about poop, but I'm grateful there's an interest.
UPDATED VIEWER COUNT: NOVEMBER 18, 2018.
This is a short video describing how to keep your chicken coop clean and smelling fresh. It requires five minutes of work in the morning and two minutes of work at night.
At night, you pick up and place all your chickens in a row on their wooden dowel. In the morning you scoop the poop out. After you pick up the poop, you take a piece of wood and you flatten out the bedding. You do this so when they poop the next night it bounces instead of sinks and sticks to more bedding. You then add fresh bedding as needed, but ever have to empty out the area. This way everything stays fresh. - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини
You forgot to show at the end where you smell your fingers then make the family breakfast!!! Lmao
Even though I don't keep poultry, I love when people come up with processes and make stuff so efficient, it's really nice to watch :)
Thanks for the feedback. It makes it nicer to go and visit the chickens since I'm not worrying about stepping in poop all the time. Also the smell almost nil. Thanks for watching.
This is my dream chicken coop! It is amazing, and your chickens are beautiful. I hope one day I will be as successful at raising chickens as you are!
OOOOOO I about fell out of my chair when you started cleaning out feces with your HANDS BARE
Georgia Marcum it's not as bad as you think. I can get a really good feel of where I need to move, and also cleans up very easily with soap and water. I make sure sometimes to put gloves on when it's really messy but other than that I'm pretty content the way it is. Thanks for watching my videos and have a great day.

i suppose, thanks for responding i really appreciate it!
I remember your video from several years ago. Searched UA-cam until I found It again. Building a new chicken coop with your design in mind. Thanks!!
Hi Jeff I have been using your method and love it!The only part that I get hung up on is the screen you use.... I don't want to spend a lot of money buying different size screens to get the right size. I was wondering if you could offer some advice on which size screen you have had the best luck with?Thank you
Just started keeping chickens, and your way is the way l was advised to keep the coop clean and odour free. After watching your video it just backs it up. Wood shavings and poop-pick every day is the way to go - literally 5 mins...but l use neoprene gloves too - easy :)
Yeah, I tried gloves in the beginning, but it was too difficult to put on when my hands were damp. Also, the poop doesn't bother me at all. I stay away from the runny stuff and always wash my hands after. Thanks for watching.
We use a cat litter coop. Sand and shavings drop through... Poop remains. Very effective, easy to use, and a little more hygienic.
+Maison Jaune I've done that and it does do a good job, but I get better results by hand. Thanks for watching.
yes a cat litter scoop would work great!!
It might, but it would probably gather too much shavings in the process. Just wash your hands with soap and water afterwards. Thanks for watching.
I applaud your love for your ladies. I couldn’t do this on a daily basis so I’ll use another method. Regarding gloves, I think horse poop is safer to handle - not so sure about bird poop - skin absorbs stuff before you have a chance to wash and I’ll be looking into this. You can find a scooper with a long handle for the assist!
GLOVES MR. PLEASE
***** That would take all the fun out of it. LOL. Don't worry, I wash my hands afterwards.
But 'but, what if you have a small scratch on your hand...AND OH HELL I WILL STOP. SORRY.That litter absorbs the moisture huh? That seems to be a great idea.
***** It works for me..so far. But there are lots of other ideas that use gloves.
LOL,...sorry.
***** No worries. Thanks for watching my videos.
I live in the uk and after all the rain i now have a muddy swampy run this caused because i put straw down and the chucks have pounded it down helping it to rot so i have for the moment moved them to a new run but less room what can i do to make the muddy run dry could i use sand or gravel?
Straw is great for dry weather. But now you have rain. Try flipping the dirt with a shovel or pitch fork and moving the top dir down and the under dirt to the surface. It will helps dry things out. Best thing to do would be to buy some large rocks, bigger than gravel. Gravel is too small and will spread out as you walk back and forth. Larger small rocks will tend to stay where you lay them. You know the size of your thumb or smaller. Bigger than a grape and smaller than an apple. Apricot size is great. That way the poop can get down between the rocks the rain will wash it off while keeping you above it all. It's never gonna be a perfect system, but it's better than organic material as a poop catcher. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
I'm so happy to have found your video! I'm hoping to start a small flock of 4, maybe 6 laying hens. We're on an acre, however, have neighbors and I'm wanting to keep the coop clean and not smelling like well, a coop. Do you mix any D.E in with the shavings to help with bugs/pests? I'd love if you could point me towards your favorite website if you have one. I'm wanting to learn all I can before I set up a coop and hopefully purchase chicks or pullets early next year.
+vicnavy1 So glad my video is inspiring you. I just use dirt and tanbark. The shavings are called ecoshave. It's the same size that is used for horses. I don't have a favorite website, but just crusie around. Google small chicken coop or chicken coop neighbors noise. Thanks for watching my videos and great luck.
+jeffmaggie
Is there anything in particular you do to their yard to keep it tidy? I appreciate your fast reply! I have children, so looking into mellow hens. Easter Eggers are high on my list, and then I'm looking to add a tan or brown egg layer. Have a great night!
+vicnavy1
Just daily maintenance. You have to be dedicated every day cause 2 days of poop looks much greater than 1 day. Good luck!!!
you have a really nice coop. did you build it ?
Not the best idea to use your hand. Contamination issues cannot be just washed off. Great idea, but why not just a poop hammock.
I beg to differ, so far I’ve had great success and this is three years later. So I know everybody has their own way, and this is my way. And I always wash my hands. Thanks for watching on the videos and have a great day. Jeff. I’m not sure why you’re calling it showed up to years later in my thread, but it did.
Eric, germs can be washed off your hands if you use soap and thoroughly scrub your hands. Not everyone performs hand hygiene properly but it certainly can be done.
@@jeffmaggie Where do you get saw dust?
mi ma well, for me it’s easy. I’m a budding and amateur woodworkers so I just collect my shavings and dust lol
how do you clean the perches?
good ideas - never knew anybody was so particular about cleaning - imagine how clean his house is
Thanks,. The house is pretty clean. I just like to keep a clean environment and I don’t like the smell. But it’s a lot of fun to take care of the chickens even years later. Thanks for watching all my videos and have a great day. Jeff.
Brilliant! . I love how honest chickens are. It's like they were screaming the whole time "This man is taking our poop"! Lol. I wonder if they prefer their coop dirty?.
Happyhomebody Sometimes they like it dirty sometimes they don't, but you can't count on them to be consistent. I've seen them move from a clean dish to eat poop out of a dirty disha and they don't seem to mind. LOL Thanks for watching my videos.
jeffmaggie, what type of roosts are those.. I am looking to make perches for my Large Fowl English Orpintons... Nice vid!
+Gail K. Thomas They were made with closet dowels, tacked in the end to prevent spinning. Thanks for waching.
Thanks jeffmaggie!!
I like the cleanliness aspect of this, though I'd use gloves.
I don't know where you live, but what about the temperature of your coop over the winter? Does sawdust keep it warm enough? Do you mix anything like PDZ into it?
Do you think the dustiness of sawdust is a problem for the hens?
Thanks.
Patti Argoff We live in the California bay area. It doesn’t get freezing around here. I do scientist for years and I really like it a lot. I wash my hands after and the family likes clean cook. Thanks for watching my videos and have a great day.
Do you think sawdust is better than using DE/PDZ/Sand Combo ?
Gu Est Yes, the way I do it , it is. The wet poop absorbs in the bedding, If you use sand, it will easily break apart as the chickens walk over it. If it's in the shavings, the poop stays together better. Don't know why... Thanks for watching my videos. Jeff
This is great, I'm thinking of getting chickens again and I've been wondering what type of coop to make/get so cleaning wound be easier. Thanks a lot!
Sure. The main thing to remember is to make sure that the poop doesn't stay behind for too long (weeks) because it will never dry out and cause lots of rotting. Good luck and thanks for watching my video.
Really good video!i really liked it
+Cold pOp Thanks. 2 plus years later and all is still good. Thanks for watching.
wow that is a mighty clean chicken coop! you have given me some great ideas to tidy up mine for this winter. right now i have 3 different perches so poop goes pretty much everywhere.
i already use our leftovers for our garden, i agree that it is awesome. but my dog likes to eat as much of it as she can ewwww haha
Same with my dogs. Something about poop makes them smile. This is so easy to take care of if you spend just a few minutes each day. Hope it gives you some ideas. I just made another video today showing how to clean up an watery mess of mud and food and organic waste from the chickens. Thanks for watching.
do you clean the place below the coop? You know, the place where most the chickens are? Or do the chickens usually know where to go?
Mikuo Hatsune Great question. If only the chicken were that smart, but they let it drop wherever they are standing. I don't remove any poop they drop on the ground outside the coop, but I do turn the dirt every few days.
The dirt turning is good because it puts the wet poop underground where its moisture leaches out into the dirt.
A few days later when I flip the dirt again, the newly surfaced poop is usually bone dry or very dehydrated and dries in the open air quickly.
I made and posted to my channel a video about it not long ago after the heavy California rains in Dec 2K14. Thanks for watching my videos!!!
Would wood shavings work just as good??
Thanks for the advice. Looks good
+Kat Mama You're welcome.
do they still poop everywhere else or just in that one area? Maybe sounds weird, but did you train them? My cousin had a rabbit and trained it to only go bathroom in one area... but when i had my chicken it crapped everywhere.
That's a great question. No, I did not train the birds. But what I do is put them in late at night. When it's dark. They won't jump off because it's dark. And by the time morning comes around, they jumped down and jump out. Every night there were four or five chickens on the flooroutside and now I bring both my German Shepherd dogs with me and the chickens go up in the coop all by themselves. Thanks for leaving a comment and thanks for watching my videos. I have others if you're interested.
Thank you for the great insights!
J.A. Renau You’re very welcome. I hope this works for you. Just remember to wash your hands afterwards. LOL. Have a great day and thanks for watching all my videos Jeff.
Great video btw
Joe Garcia 😀
Please help if you can, my husband spread lime in the coop with nothing else. The chickens are walking around in lime!!
Skeeter Lewis need to remove the chicken very quick. Line bad thing with them. Thanks for
This is great! Thanks for sharing :)
Maribeth Zinkle So glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
You could also make a poop box with sand in it and use a kitty litter scoop. The scoop works well with the sand. It you feel kitty scoop would be too small you could make your own with hardware cloth. Great coop!
Deb N The sand doesn't work well because it gets between the cracks and falls down to the floor below. For me , shavings are the best. Thanks for watching!!!
one word............GLOVES
LOL, I've tried gloves, but they don't work very well. Sound's silly, but one needs to have the touch sensitivity and gloves just don't do it justice. Remeber to wash afterwards as the fingers get to smellin' ripe. Thanks for watching my videos.
jeffmaggie pooper scooper
Gamer Man 9 AAARRRRGGHHHH. That wouldn't be any fun LOL. Thanks for watching my videos...and yes, I do wash my hands after. Jeff
MrCrash698
One word...... soap
You could probably make yourself a custom screened shovel... That can just scoop the poop and leave behind your sawdust.
Hi! Just wondering how the chicken behave once the sun is up. Do they stay perched until you open the door?
Rose0fire no, they're up right at dawn. Thanks for watching my videos.
Thanks for the reply!
So, the woodchips stay compact even though the chickens walk on it? And they don't dig?
Rose0fire They dig a lot. They mess up the bedding completely by the end of the day. But what I do, is, that piece of wood that you see at the bottom of the screen, that fence stake,I use that to tap the bedding down each night after the chickens are on the porch. During the day they don't really stay upthere. Thanks for watching my videos and have a great day.
where do you get the saw dust?
It's called Ecolite and was purchased in a compressed 7.5 cubic feet (foot?) bag at a livestock feed store. Thanks for watching.
Wait... at the end of the day you pick up each chicken and put it UP on the perch / bar??? I am having a problem where my chickens go up the "stairs" and cluster on the "edge" and stay there like that to the point where some are resting on the edge of the stairs and I am wondering if I need to install a light or something for them to farther. Also in the begining I didn't have perch bar and later when I installed it they wouldn't go on it, only saw one go up there once, so we removed it. Again, do you think it has to do with lighting?
Yes. I only have 1 light and its outside the coop. Chickens will follow the light. After the timer turns the light off, I place the birds on the perch inside the coop in the dark. They won't jump down till daylight. Thanks for watching my videos.
They should naturally use the roost. If they dont, when they are chicks you put a roost inside they're brooder and they will learn to use that faster as chicksn then as full grown.
+Brave Cuber They finally started to use it, but it took a while.
+Brave Cuber True. Easier to teach when young. Thanks for watching.
+Dima Prok yeahhhhhhhh. Happy chickens and a happy chicken owner. Congrats and thanks for watching my videos.
could you not use paper underneath them at night and remove it at daylight or would they eat the paper or use a wire screen under them and let the poop fall into a bucket or something. just thinking
They would chew and destroy any paper . They also use the coop in the day so it's kind of tricky. Trial and error for different tasks works. This has been good for over a year now. Thanks for watching,
I have a wood working shop for hobbies now and started using shavings and dust it does work good I use a shop vac to clean with and put the dust in my garden area its working good thanks for the idea
You're welcome!
That Americana is persistent & has a lot to say LOL. I think I'll be using this method when my chicks are ready to move into the new coop 👍🏻
As long as you do every day, it will always be clean and you always feel good about going out there. Thanks for watching my videos I also have other videos on feeding and watering can.
what did u put down there?the white one?tnx
It's called Ecoflake. It's the same stuff they use in a horse stall. Probably made out of some type of wood shavings. It comes compressed in a 7 1/2 pound bag. Thanks for watching my videos.
and don't they poo during the day too? what do you do about that?
They go outside the coop during the day, only to go back inside to lay an egg or socialize...but they like to be outside in the daylight. So about 80% of the daytime poops gets deposited outside the sleeping nesting quarters. Thanks for watching.
But I'm guessing they also poop on the dirt during the day so what about that? Great video I'm trying this whenever I have chickens
Blackwood -Formerly SongsAndSigns- Great question. Yeah, this only works at night. During the day they poop inside on top with the shavings are and also on the floor. But because I pack it down with a piece of wood at night and I don't disturb it in the daytime and the food and water is outside, they only come in to lay eggs and so it doesn't really mess it up too much. It's only at night time when they go in there and they make their individual little nests. I didn't line them up in a row I would find 12 piles but they would all be mixed up because they tend to wander around in the middle of the night. If I put them on the porch, they stay still because it's dark and they don't want to jump to the floor until it's daytime. Thanks so much for watching my video. Have a great day and enjoy your chickens when she get them.
simple but clever
+Steve Wilson
Way too simple and clever...hard to believe that I thought of it. I probably didn't... must have seen it done somewhere else by someone who is equally as anal retentive as me. HAHA Thanks so much for watching and making a comment.
What food do you give to your chickens? Because my chickens have really wet poop. I use the layers pellets (half a cup) then some corn (other half). Also how do you stop chickens going broody and what to do when they have? Grest video btw. :)
We feed our chickens almost everything. All food scraps in food preparation, all food scraps off the plate, all food scraps left over. Any big food scraps are cut into small tiny pieces. Even the hard tiny vegetables can be cut in small pieces. They act just like little tiny rocks to help break apart their food. The regular chicken food that we use is called crumble. It's about $18 at a Feedstore. You can get it organic or non-organic. Chicken's poop is wet and dry. The wet poop smells, the dry poop does not. As far as diet goes, I have not noticed any difference whether I give them all fruit or all dry cereal. Check out my other videos to see how I get rid of the leftover food that they will not eat. Also you can check out my other videos on food and water storage. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for that. So even meat too? Or just veggies? My chickens don't have dry poop at all. It's just dollops of diarrhea really. Thanks for the help anyhow.
+Mikka Ward Yes, even meat. If you think about it, they eat worms bugs Catapillar's, even little baby mice. And that's all meat. I have a video on what to do with a broody chicken if you want to check it out.
Oh okay, thanks. Now thinking about it it does make sense, *faceplalm*. K i'll check that out, thanks.
Awesome. Remember they will eat EVERYTHING that you give them.
LOL - 85K+ watching a video on chicken poop! Personally, I will be putting a poop board under my perches but your system would work as well. I love seeing everyone's ideas and what works for them! Have a great day!
BacktoBasics LOL as well. I can't believe over 85,000 people HAVE seen this video either. But it just goes to show that everybody's interested in poop ha ha. Thanks for watching and good luck with your system. You're right, there are many ways to do this. I'm sure yours will work just as good or better than mine. Good luck and have fun. Thanks for watching.
Brilliant idea!🐤🐥🐓
NiNi Le Thanks. 👍😀
You're a great chicken Dad. I've never ever seen such a clean coop!
Thanks, it's lots of fun too.
I just want you to know that this video will influence the building of my koop! Thanks so much.
philanddeb818 Wow, I'm thrilled that this video can be that influential. I'm so glad that you like it...and happy clean chicken keeping. Thanks for watching.
It is a pleasure to watch what you've created. It's husbandry at it's finest. It is a pleasure to share your videos with others who truly want to create a great life for their animals! Kudos to you again!
please do more videos on your chickens and their coop.
I do have other videos if you cruise my channel. Also some great vids with my German shepherd dogs. Thanks for watching I'll post some more in the near future
very good i am up to my eyes everyday and it always look dirty so thankyou for the tip
Depending on how long it's been raining, if the dirt is only wet for about an inch or two deep, you can take a shovel go down 6-7 inches deep and flip it. That way the dry dirt underneath will be on top and the wet dirt on top will then be underneath where it can dry out by leaching downwards into dryer dirt. It could dry out twice as fast. Thanks for watching and have a great day and I hope you stay dry.
Could also use 4-6" of sand and a cat litter scoop. Or a pitch fork with 1/2" x 1/2" hardware cloth on it. Even huge coops can be easily cleaned with sand flooring.
+Crystal S I've tried litter and sand. The chickens are very good at spreading it all over. This works best...for me/ Thanks for watching my videos.
Wasn't sure if you tried it. Whatever works for you. :) I do send my compliments on a clean and tidy coop.
what do you use? saw dust and what?
That's it. Just sawdust. And I clean it out every couple of weeks. Thanks for watching my video.
+jeffmaggie where do you get sawdust or do you make your own?
LOVE IT ,,IM GETTING CHICKNS DOING SOME RESEARCH ,,INFO TO ME WAS EXCELNT!!ROSE
+Metalme07 You're welcome...and have fun!!!. Thanks for watching
thank you for the video, very informative, but what about the out side of the chicken house, i am sure they poop there too, how do you clean it?
thank you
sincerely
becky
the netherlands
I don't clean the outside of the coop...or at least not yet. but I do use a rototiller composter for 10 minutes every 2 weeks to keep the ground soft and the mix in the poop that has accumulated.
jeffmaggie tnx!
To clean the outside of the coop, I use a pitch fork and turn the earth every day. Always stays fresh and dry on top.
Thank you!!
cool! thanks for sharing
SkeyeU You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
where did you buy the coop at
Our neighbor built it from scratch. He's a genius!!!
jeffmaggie did it cost you anything
Total cost (not including love) was about $1,200 and was hand built by a neighbor from scratch.
The first two stages... no problem (although I'd probably wear those thin disposable surgeon gloves) however the sifting stage I found irritating. I'd probably just throw the excess sawdust in with the compost. Great job, though. Love your efficiency and pedanticity (yes, I think I just made that word up)
Peter Fisher thanks. It's not that bad. I always wash my hands when I'm finished. And for the extra shavings that cancer stuff to the pool, a little bit of extra effort it takes to get it off Lily goes along way in the wallet. Thanks for watching my videos and have a great day. Jeff.
you just gave me the solution for my ladder 👍🏼 🙏🏾
Do have fly problems?
Aurora's Water Culture Orchids We don’t have any flight problems because I clean it out every day. But if I were to let it accumulate, yes we would have flies. Thanks for watching my videos and have a great day. Jeff.
Thanks for sharing
+daisy3690 You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
I just lay newspaper under the perches each day. Roll it all up in the morning and burn. Resulting ash and poo eventually ends up on the allotment. It works very well for me.
Brian Gilson that's one idea. I don't have a newspaper subscription and we're not allowed to burn paper outside where we live. But I like your idea. And thanks for watching my video.
Thanks Jeffmaggie. I pick up free newspapers at the supermarket for the week when shopping.
Only takes a couple of minutes to burn. Also paint the inside of the coop with white quick drying undercoat paint. This makes it easier to spot the dreaded red mite before they take hold!
Brian Gilson 👍😀
I bought a chicken a few days ago and he's growing SO FAST. But my parents say that they have to give it to give it to someone before it grows into an adult chicken. They say that they're poop will smell much more nastier and it will be out of control in the house. Is it true that its hard to take care of a fully grown chicken in a house? I really want to keep my chicken:(
Plz reply
Unfortunately, a chicken in the house is not a good idea. Chickens can poop up to 15 times an hour...and not in the same area. When you step on it by accident, it gets stuck between the crevices in your shoe and then it gets tracked all over the place. The chicken itself doesn't smell, but the poop does. Not all the poop does, just the runny brown soupy part that is part of each poop. The firm poop will just dry and flake away. So sorry, but in this case your parents are right. Thanks for watching my videos and definitely get a chicken when you can have it outside.
+jeffmaggie ok, thank you for replying so detailed. It helped a lot
As a retired cop, and a chicken wrangler, I would rather pick up chicken poop with my bare hands then touch homeless people, like I had too for 30 years. I use a pooper scooper to clean my coop and in the winter, it freezes and is easy to pick it up . A clean coop is important.
all these people making a fuss about picking up the poop are funny.
Ditto. Washes off the hands, just like ours does...
it seems like a lot of work to do every single day. But it does look nice and clean.
True. And thanks
@@jeffmaggie the video was less than 7 minutes long that doesn't seem like an excessive amount of time an effort to have a clean coop, do you still keep chickens and the daily routine 3 years later.
j rob Thanks for the question. Yes I do. But I’ve changed the inside of the coop. I ended up taking out the bottom floor and replacing it with 1 inch wire mash. And that helps a lot. All the poop drops on the floor and then I can scoop it up in keep it for the next season. Thanks so much for watching my videos and have a great day. Jeff.
where you get sawdust at ??????
Chicken and horse feed store. Bulk bag.
like cats---gotta be in your biz! LOL
Lark Bird ????/?
@ jeffmaggie..... yes?
Awesome! I’m in California too and just started building my coop. Thanks for the tip!
You should do another poop cleaning video, but this time wear fingerless gloves. That mind-blow 70% of the commenters. 🤣
OK to each his own. Me, gloves because my SKIN IS ABSORBING microbes! Just a thought, but I do love your coop set-up.
Jennifer Lord Yeah, I know...I hear it from my wife EVERY time I come in the house LOL. But I just gotta.... Thanks for watching my video.
Jennifer Lord Your skin does not absorb microbes, the whole point of skin is to act as a protective barrierbarrier. So long as you have no open sores you are quite safe. Still, grabbing chicken poo is not my cup of tea.
Rory Smith Agreed, it's an acquired trait, and not one that I'm always proud to share with folks, but I DO like to do it. Thanks for watching my videos. Jeff
What about the rest of the coop? How is it so clean?
I'm and early riser and get up before the chickens do. I go out and put them outside the coop so they can eat breakfast. Then I clean the coop. I go back a few times throughout the day (you know, when checking eggs) and pick up any poop that is on top. If you stay on top of if, it will pay off. Thanks for watching.
Thanks! I went to one of my old neighbors to look at his coop and there was poop everywhere..... yuck. I would really want to keep on top of that....
ever tried the sand method?
Eric Newton yes, I did try to send method and what I found is if you're not on top of it hourly, the bird step on it and it gets all pooped out and broken into little pieces. For me and us it didn't work very well, but it might work great for other people and really, this is very individual. What works for me doesn't work for others, read the reviews and comments underneath. There's a lot of people that think I should wear gloves. But you know that's just my way. OK thanks, for leaving a message. Jeff.
Thanks for responding.I'm thinking it's a space thing on the sand verses shavings and what works best.
Also those glove people are trolls.lol.I have a hard time with gloves unless i'm shoveling snow
YOU GRAVE THE POOP WITH YOUR HANDS YOU TOUCH YOUR WIFE??? YOUR RING!!!!
lol, he should've used a scooper or gloves at least
+abrahamgoesmoo
and a mask-breathing in all that stuff. Gross. Use gloves at least.
+Jacquelyn B yes, kinda gross:/
+abrahamgoesmoo
There's no fun in gloves...thanks for watching LOL
+abrahamgoesmoo
Kinda gross...just like ours. But I wash it off afterwards.
use shovel, spade or wear gloves at least for ur own hygienic is a good think. anywah your chicken are so lovely and cute ♡
lala lele thanks, I have since started using some gloves sometimes, but it doesn't really work as good as the finger method. And it also washes off the same as ours. Laugh out loud thanks for watching
jeffmaggie when I saw this the first time I thought it was kinda gross but now my girls are 6 mos old and I do this everyday bare handed just like this LOL. I think I'll try the finer bedding like u have. Seems like great results.
Ryan Dunbar yeah, it's amazing results. I never have poop anywhere else except in that straight row. So it really saves a lot of money on everything. Thanks for watching my videos and by the way, if it's raining where you are check out my video on how to keep everything dry. Good luck and have fun thanks for watching by Jeff
I like your way of doing it!!! I gave it a try....worked great!! Now, have any suggestions on cleaning the hog pen out...and PLEASE don't say "do it by hand"!! My little pig, (named Bacon), would think I'm "just like him"! lololol!! :)
Poop from pigs...hmmm. Haven't thought that through yet. Not sure it would work as pig droppings are different and... Honestly, I haven't got a clue. If you come up with something, make a video and maybe inspire others. I'd be interested. Thanks for watching.
Use a kitty litter scoop for pellet litter. It should work with sawdust.
Why not use a cat litter scoop?
Paul Menefee The cat litter scoop is too small and only allows for a few poops to be collected, plus it falls off. Easier to get with the hands as I have more control. Thanks for watching.
You could put the hardware cloth under the perch slightly buried then pick up and give it a shake, should eliminate most ofthe bare hands on the poop.
+redandsonny Good idea, but doesn't work for me. I've tried hardware cloth, but it doesn't work if you pick up daily as the poop falls between the holes. Thanks for watching my videos/
we have a suggestion for you get a cat little scup shovel from the dollar tree for 1$ THAT WAY YOU DONT HAVE TO PICK IT UP WITH YOUR HAND
I tried the cat shovel method. Doesn't work for me, gets too much bedding, and you can only get a poop or two at a time. And...how does one clean the shovel afterwards without using hands? I've used my hands for years and it works GREAT. Just remember to wash afterwards. Comes off real easy...just like human poop. Thanks for watching my videos and thanks for your feedback. Jeff
i like it...
Murwyn Hancock thanks, it's very easy to set up. Thanks for watching my videos.
115000 views and over 5 years later and 99% of the comments are trying to convince this fellow to use gloves that's the way he chooses to do it, do it your way.
You’re correct, the majority of the comments that are left are for me to wear gloves. And I’ve told so many people that gloves do not work for me and that I wash my hands. But thanks for noticing and have a great day and thank you for watching all my videos.
try a cat poop scoop! also if you put a bit of tarp underneath it'd catch the poo at the base all you'd have to do is pour it into your bucket. :)
+SarcasticLipStick I've tried the poop scoop and it takes too much bedding. This is much easier and it washes off very quickly. I've been doing it for over 2 years now and it's been flawless. Thanks for watching.
We got chickens a week ago and poop is literally EWERYWHERE! :D They even poop in their water bowl... I'mm about to go clean up.
+Farkas Alexa It's a messy job sometimes... Thanks for watching.
Alexa F. Put your waterer on a block. We have ours on a cinder block
I use sweet PZD and a cat litter scoop. It last forever, initial investment is pricy but cheap to maintain
+Stacy Gerber There are many ways to do this...mine is a bit messy but works for me. Thanks for watching.
what about a pooper scoop
Kelly MOran I’ve tried a pooper scooper. It doesn’t work and picks up too much sawdust. My method works really good. As long as I type this site is down every night, I’m able to pick it up very easily in the morning. Don’t worry, I wash my hands with soap and water after. Thanks for watching all the videos and have a great day.
Why not use sand or cheap cat litter then use a litter box scooper to clean it? You will eliminate having to sift it a few times. Must scoop up the poop, dump in bucket, job is done. Once you get a good layer in the bottom of the coop, you might need to add a little as needed.
JOYLYNN BLANCHARD Good question, but the sand is too fine and falls through the cracks. The scooper doesn't allow me the "feel" of the poop. Scoop too hard and it crumbles. Hand picking is less messy in the long run, but each person has their own method that works for them. I like all of them, but this is the best for me. Thanks for watching all my videos. Jeff
is that a pebble or a sand?
Neither, it is a product called Ecoflake. It's made up of wood shavings. Thanks for watching my videos.
+jeffmaggie
hi can I used those things from wood mill?
+jeffmaggie
hi can I used those things from wood mill?
+jai2 Gomez why is it that your ecoflake is color white?can I used any ecoflake..do we have any substitute?or where can we find ecoflake?
+jai2 Gomez Yes.
have you ever herd of histoplasmoses
Sure have. Hasn't happened yet, but it's there. Try using an N-95 mask.
well did not mention using a mask thank goodness if you do
Barbara Nelson Safety First.
Awesome idea..beautifully clean coop...And... I just love how you handle all of these people making a big "stink" over you picking up poo with your hands and how you "handle" it. Really "peeps"...it's just doo doo...didn't ya ever clean a baby's diaper???
That's the best part of reading these comments...the poop factor and what to do with it if it gets on your hands. I get a chuckle every time... Thanks for watching.
If you don't like Chicken Poo, don't keep chickens. Poo is only X Food it's amazing body waste. I collect it all from my Chickens my family even my dogs. Then make it in to bricks, dry it in the sun. Heats my home with it in winter burns better & longer then coal or logs & it's free fuel for my wood burning stove. people today are soft & would rather waste good money buying fuel why,? when Poo is free & all around us with in easy reach. Cow poo is used all over the world on open fires to cook on. So get your hands on a load of Poo fuel of the future.
+Karl Gibson Awesome!!! You've taken it to the next level by recycling and are probably saving lots of money too. Thanks for watching.
Well said and is true
Actually very true;)
+JDM- MAD
Thanks.
Karl Gibson do u need a special burner to be able to use the poo???
Here is a thought, make a 6"x6" scooper with that 1/2inch hard wear cloth and shake it out inside the coop, then you wouldn't have to touch three time, unless you enjoy that sort of thing : /
+Bradley Swenson . I've tried that too, but it still is not very efficient. If the chickens step on the poop in squishes through the screen. I'm still trying new ideas, though. Your idea is a good one!!! Thanks for watching.
Can you clean my coop?
Sure can...be right over LOL. Thanks for watching my videos.
Now that's hardcore
Ohhh my Lord tough hands mate 😲
Sand is WAY better... Sift it out with a Kitty litter scoop and viola! You only remove the poop. The sand lasts so long and you can even wash, dry and reuse the sand!
I haven't tried sand. Imagine that it acts similiar to kitty litter. Will try when I need to puchas more. Hopefully the sand will not scatter too much. Thanks for watching and thanks for the suggestion.
Could be a Zen chicken coop 😊
Joe Garcia Yes, it could be sent. Could be Zen. All I know is that the chickens really like being in a clean cool. In any dirt on my fingers I wash off. Thanks for watching all my videos and have a great day. Jeff.
You sit them on the perch and they don't move until morning? Much better than my three cats crawling on me all night, every night. I've gotten use to one sleeping on my head.
+Heather Gray Works with chickens cause they can't see in the dark and they don't like to jump in the dark. I put them there after ti's dark. Thanks for watching my videos. We also have a cat...and she sleeps ANYWHERE she wants LOL
Heather Gray its called sleeping
Thank you for getting back to me, I was so concerned, I phoned our co-op and he sold my husband the lime and said it's fine and will be ok because lime is a natural crunched rock, an would help with pest control, mites or other things chickens get. Who knew? not me!
Skeeter Lewis ok...but not too much lime...
Why not use a Cat litter box shovel ? I think that it is inexpensive and no chicken poop under your finger nails
Yes, you are correct. It is inexpensive and won't get under your fingernails. But, the problem is that it picks up too much of the shavings. And once the shavings are in the scoop there's no way to sifted out without the poop falling into little pieces there by defeating the whole purpose. For me, and I speak only for me, it's much easier to take the poop out with my fingers as I can individually lift each poop off the shavings at the equator. I know it doesn't make a lot of sense, but I do wash my hands every single time.thanks for watching my video and more importantly thanks for commenting.
You should try to eat it to , its delicious
Spot Light Wow, with a comment like that I’m guessing that you have a lot of friends. LOL. Thanks for watching and you’re right, sometimes it does get in the way. But don’t worry, it always washes off with soap and water (just like our poop does)
there ya go, go right in there with bare hands :-)
Toasty Mornings yeah, I know it sounds gross, but it's not. It's much easier to pick it up with fingers than it is with gloves. I was wash my hands after. But the gloves comment is the most common comment bubble. Thanks for watching thanks for commenting.
