    Great tips, I need to do this over the weekend! I love when my coop and run is fresh and clean! I’m down to 5 hens also, (city limits). 💚

      Honestly it’s not all bad, having a small flock. And it’ll make your clean easier! 😆 I also love that fresh pine smell, and everything being clean. It lasts all of ten minutes though! 🙄

    Hi there,
    Thank you for your tips. I don't know why your video showed up in my feed but I'm glad it did. I'll be checking out your other videos for sure. I'm a German living in Belgium and I have four chickens. What people over here do to prevent mites from settling into the coop is dusting it with diatomaceous earth .... Ah, I just understood that abbreviation in a previous comment ("DE"). What people also do over here is to take a blow torch or similar and shortly burn the nooks and crannies of the coop, to destroy any mite eggs - obviously with the proper care to not burn the whole thing down... 😅

      Sure! I have a “coop and run” playlist here you can browse. Or you can search “Omaha” - that’s the model name from the brand Rugged Ranch. ✌🏼❤️🐓

    Play sand isn’t good for chickens. Gonna start giving my babies Braggs apple cider vinegar more often. Now that the weather is already getting cold here in IN. Not to good for them in the heat, I put DE on the flooring and some poultry dust too

    I laughed when you said a leaf blower cause that's what I use! I do mine about every 6-8 weeks. Only spray/scrub twice a year. I never thought about not composting all the old material, but since I do it so often and use DE/poultry dust as a preventative, I guess I don't see the harm?

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  3 роки тому +2

      I would think you’re ok to compost that material if you don’t have a confirmed case of lice or mites. 👍🏼 and I’ve never done the leaf blower but I bet it would be really efficient!

    I'm going to try and do this next week. I've been in hospital having a tumour removed and my parents have been looking after my hens and goat. But they are not fit to clean them out. So hopefully next week I can go in to the coop and not just clean it but gut it and get it ready for winter here in chilly Northern Ireland. My 5 have an outhouse converted into a large coop so it takes ages removing all the bedding, sand etc but need to add all new stuff. Once all clean, I cover the concrete floor in an equine disinfectant then sand and in the back of the coop I put hay on the floor for additional warmth and DE sprinkled over it. I've had my girls from June so this will be the 2nd full deep clean. Other than that I clean poo of their ladder under their main rooster bar twice a week. Disinfectant and cover the ladder with equine disinfectant powder. Makes it easy to brush poo into the bucket and keeps all bugs away..... Awe the joys.
    But the good news is that I am getting 2 more girls. So another reason for full deep clean xx

      Maybe 7 will be the lucky number for you! I’d have millions of chickens but I don’t want the city to take them away, so 8 is my limit until I get my little dream homestead... then NO ONE can tell me what to do! 😆😊

    Great tips Sara❗Quick update on Sally aka cornish rock. She is still growing at an alarming rate even though all I feed her is layer feed. She is very aggressive. When l reach into her area she literally almost starts pecking my hand. She isn't fearful of me at all. I think there's more to just the way they breed them. I really believe hormones are in the equation. She is even growing her comb already. Thanks for everything my friend👍
