If this nub idea actually works by inducing lag intentionally onto the server they can ban you it is very obvious to a server when artificial lag is induced Packet loss occurs as packets drop and are not received and then they are doubled up on the receiving party the one who got lagged, it becomes very obvious who is causing the lag and has nothing to do with switching a "light" switch in your house you are interupting a hosted server connection intentionally and it is VERY trackable.
This is NOT something that can be faked by a "bad" connection and can only be done by tampering
Actually do all the gamers here a favor build this device and leave it on for 10 second intervals so we can all laugh when you get banned.

Playing competitively and playing casually with others is what makes video games fun for a people these days. It’s that cheating and having an unfair advantage against someone doesn’t really suit my style so when one person phases through a wall and eliminates everyone, I just see the experience of playing online kind of being ruined for others.

Lag switches have been around for a lot fucking longer than next gen. I remember kids using them when halo 2 came out on the original xbox. More servers are becoming dedicated btw, so lag switches won't work. Not that you would understand what I'm talking about because you're an idiot.

He doesn’t actually erase time, what he does is create a world where no one else can see or remember what happens for 10 seconds besides Diavolo. In that 10 second interval, no one can touch him and he can’t touch anyone, but he can avoid attacks and go behind his opponents to set up a counterattack once the 10 seconds are up. To us, it would seem like Diavolo teleported behind us when the 10 seconds are up

Edit: Hang on... i can see why you think its illegal. There are evidentally 2 kinds of lag switching. One is this, a light switch in the ethernet cable. It isnt illegal, but most likely will result in a console ban. The other is a DDoS, a software based lag switch. This kind of a lag switch is illegal, and will either get you jailtime, a fine, or both.

great thanks, i electrocuted myself and went to the hospital, and ate heaps of food and now i'm fat, and now my mom has to go to the store because i pulled my light switch out the wall. So on the way to the store my mom had a car crash and nearly died, my grandma had a heart attack in my room, but i was in the middle of a game so i couldn't help so i called the ambulance and they came, when they got here they crashed into the electricity pole and started a electric fire, now i have no house, no xbox, and no friends. Firstly, It's not possible for a lag switch to DDoS anyone, and secondly you lagging does not DoS anyone either, it's simply their connection failing to keep a stable connection with you (the host).
This is however against the ToS and could get you banned.

The twisted pair cable is twisted for a reason. It helps to keep down interference. Plus the exposed wire and the big metal switch acts as a antenna for EM radiation. The best recipe for packet loss, even if the switch is ON. It is as trying to use a coat hanger to connect to a switch.

This has been happening to me a lot lately in Street Fighter 5. I just got into Online play 11 days ago, and I'm an OG SF 2 player from the 1990s picked up the core gameplay really quick. Breaks my heart seeing all these younger players cheating beyond ways I never imagined in the Arcades. Do this in the arcades and you would have gotten a real punch in the face.
Yea, the same has been happening to me in samurai shodown. The game starts cool no lag and suddenly when I'm winning lag interrupts my combo. I though it was coincidence but it happened to often that I decided to investigate and I found out this.

Note: A lot of games nowadays will prevent lag switches from working properly.
For games like Left 4 Dead 1/2, Team Fortress 2, CS:GO and Garry's Mod, it will freeze you in place when it detects lag, or when the connection is resumed it will teleport you back. In other games, it will often just teleport you back, or disconnect you from the server.

well, one would have to be really stupid not to be able to figure this out themselves. it's literally an off switch for an ethernet cable. ironically this isn't even what people mean when they say "lag switch" or what people actually use and have used for 20 years. this kind of device will get you automatically kicked out of most multiplayer games, since your connection completely drops. you need to send a certain number of packet headers to the server or to the p2p network per unit time or it thinks you've turned the game off. even in halo 2 you couldn't use something like this. that kind of basic check has been around for a long time. maybe it was feasible in the first counterstrike. in any case what people actually use is not a hardware device at all, it's software. it strips the packets of any meaningful data but keeps sending the headers. thus you're not updating the server with any of your client-side data until you flip the switch off, but the server still thinks you're connected. there are even checks for this too nowadays but lag switches are pretty dead, i would assume if anyone still uses them in 2020 they are using more advanced, game-specific software that sends exactly the bits the server checks for but nothing else. or something even more sophisticated than that which gives you a greater advantage, like spoofing bits that might be advantageous. of course 10 years ago there were hardware devices that did the same thing and could be used for consoles. working the same basic way as an ethernet adapter that intercepts the packets and strips them before sending them back to the router. but at least for pc gaming there's no need to use a device when you can use free software to achieve the same thing. lag switches also don't have a consistent effect on all games. in some games the client is king and the server trusts anything the client tells it. in others, the reverse is true. rather than the server updating its representation of your client, the client gets updated by the server if it deviates too much, too fast. so if you wanted to appear behind someone instantly it wouldn't work. you'd turn on the lag switch and walk behind them, turn it back on and you'd reappear back where you were when you turned the lag switch on. these systems let the client update the server but only at a certain rate. like your coordinates need to move gradually, it expects a constant stream of data. this has a negative impact on players who are just naturally laggy. if their connection drops by accident then yeah, when their connection returns to normal they will be teleported back to where they were. but from the other players' perspective it will look like they're just standing still for a time. the only difference is from your perspective instead of seeing them stand still and then teleport, you see them stand still and then start walking. and the only teleportation that happens is from their own perspective. this is a better system obviously but it's a bit outdated, nowadays there are methods to kick players out past a certain threshold, but still give the client values priority over server values. the issue with those methods is they require the rest of the game to be equally polished. if there is any other exploit that allows the player to rapidly move or do other really abnormal things, the server won't override them. so if the game isn't free of exploits, that method won't fix all your problems. however i don't know of any recent titles that use this server-side priority method.

If you're debating whether to do this or not because of the comments that are claiming this to be illegal, ignore them. All the lag switch does is interrupt the connection between your gaming system and your internet router. It does not effect the other players' internet whatsoever. If it was illegal, I would be in jail for turning the WiFi off on my phone or computer.

For those who think it's illegal: It is NOT illegal because all you are doing is cutting your connection in your PRIVATE NETWORK before any fucking router - no interference with anybody else. You're not sending any trash data to anybody because there is no connection. To the server it appears like you have lost connection. In game it works because for a few seconds you can still move whilst the game client verifies your connection has been lost, when it does that it prevents you from moving, you flick the lag switch back on all the sudden you reconnect, and the client sends your location to the server, server updates and you have 'magically teleported' to wherever you were able to get in those few seconds. This process can be repeated to move further. Thats why its not illegal and how it works in brief.

no, it doesn't work. if your playing hl2, minecraft or any game it'll dissconnect your internet, not their's. to the host, you'll freeze and anyone can kill you.

Additional tip if one tries this:
Configure your computer to use a static IP adress instead ofa dynamic one (DHCP)
That way your router won't disconnect you completely (which might happen) when triddering the lag switch.

I did not know such a thing existed before until two nights ago when I played against Ackuma player in Tekken 7. Everytime I do a combo launcher the game lags. When I drop the combo the game comes back to normal. He kept doing it until it became so obvious. What a waste of time and effort!

nope this is really how we do it tho we usually dont use a light switch and we re-shield the cable just to make it that little bit better
also if we want a timed one we use a circuit board instead with a button that cuts off the signal for X miliseconds

An easier method to introduce lag to a network connection would be with traffic shaping, like using a token bucket. You can do it completely in software and don't have to ruin a perfectly good Ethernet cable. Traffic shaping also gives you more control to how much lag you want to cause, instead of just being "on" or "off".
But whether you use traffic shaping or physically disconnecting the network connection, it will only work in games that are dumb and don't implement server/client sanity checks or prediction.
How does one do this, I am curious and would like to attempt to learn such a thing.
