Proper Grimsby song, aye lad! Next door neighbour was singing thee song as he opened door. Me with two bottles o guinnee and a half a port....neeeearly had something in my eye. Fanbloodytastic x
Memories of the "Cleethorpes Folk Club" at the Lifeboat Hotel in the sixties ! John sang differently then .More nasally . He had thick black curly hair then !!! He was a librarian at the Grimsby Central Library .. I also saw "Streets of London" Ralph McTell there and I heard Simon and Garfunkel played there ! Now I live in Jeffreys Bay ,Eastern Cape , South Africa .
Many people think it's Irish. You'd be surprised how many songs and tunes thought to be Irish actually aren't. If something was recorded by the Dubliners, Chieftains, or one of the other well known Irish bands, it seems to "acquire Irishness".
man this song hits me in the heart
played at my pops funeral
he was a hell of a man
Awesome! I always assumed this song was hundreds of years old!

Always want to bawl at this one. My father would've loved it. Mad fisherman, ex merchant navy, and a champion teller of tall tales. RIP Fred xx

A fine song John, thank you. We enjoyed your concert at Whitby a few years back.. 2018
Marvellous ... such an emotional song.
Loved this rendition.
Sure wish the video showed his guitar playing.
First class folk song one of the greats.
This that song make me think on old friend.
Sublime John, thank you. You are undoubtedly one of the most modest men I've ever met. Have you learned 'Harry Tate's Navy' yet (by Bill M)?
Great song! I always thought it was a traditional Irish song. Also check out Fiddler's Green in Neil Gaiman's fantastic Sandman comic.
