I bought the A6600 for the $918 price last week from B&H, and just sold my A6400 16-50 combo for $850. I'm quite happy with my upgrade at such a minor difference in cost! Crazy how the A6400 has kept its price well.

Don Mega For videos at least I've found the bigger grip and much better battery life well worth the extra cost I paid.
For just photography the 6100 is one of the best cameras available in that price range. Our still has very good video too.
Hello Arthur - I think one of the big difference between the a6100 and a6400 is that the a6100 does not have a digital level gauge (gyroscope). Is this correct? That would be a big deal for landscape photography.

I´ll stick with A6300 + SEL16-50 & 55-210. My A6300 was bought in August 2019 for 930 Euro (1,026 USD on 01/30/2020). Too young to replace.
Gabriel Gattringer My combo too! Do yourself a favour and get a prime lens, like Sigma 30mm or 56mm 1.4. I have the Samyang 12mm, Sigma 30mm and Sony 85mm. I find that I’m not using my zooms much anymore.
@@rianapienaar2090 a Prime lense would be waste of money. I don't even use the 16-50 often. I'm shooting 98% of the time with SEL 55-210mm. I hate wide angle lenses. I'm a helicopter / plane spotter. All i need is a good telephoto lense.

Arthur, tnx a lot for all your videos and reviews! I bought an a6400 last spring and it's an amazing camera! Last week I spent many hours by choosing ND filter for my new Sigma 16mm. This is the first time when I realized why 1/4000 shutter speed is not enough... I didn't find any video on youtube that explains exactly how many stops should you buy to shoot at daylight (especially in sunny weather) with f1.4 (to not overexpose the image). And no one shows photo samples (with iso/s.speed and f settings) as well. By the way for all subscribers: 3 stops is the most versatile use ND filter (nd8/103/0.9). Please make a video about filters for A6xxx. Explain the differences between Protectors/UV/CPL/ND/GND filters. Wish you all the best! With BEST REGARDS
It is very tempting to up grade to the a6600 at that price. I have the a6400 but I would love to get that small help with the IBIS and the longer battery of a6600. Not sure if I could qualify for the student discount but that is a great deal.
Honestly, I wait for higher res, higer iso apsc camera and more lens. Seeing as full frame got more love, im quite sad, even price aside, there is little to choose from.
Full frame will always get all of the love, but there is a crowd like us who loves the small compact factor (especially us travelers). Heck, even Tony from Tony and Chelsea only travels with APS-C!
I got it for $598 last month and using it for my UA-cam Channel. The best part about this camera is unlimited recording time!

I am curious though, I stumbled across your channel awhile back while trying to research cameras and it's one of the channels that made me really want to get into the Sony system.
I see you have a few older videos for budget lenses and such but I am super curious if your opinions have changed since then and of course with the "newer" technology vs that of the a6000 back in the day.
Would you be able to make a video featuring:
A solid budget lens replacement for the a6100/6400, accompanied with a better glass upgrade (Say budget is $300ish+ and a recommended would be $700+)
As well as macro and telephoto? And maybe a couple prime lenses and or a solid video lens?

sigma lenses, I feel that 1.4 aperture is mandatory for apsc cameras to produce best results,,,,,even in daylight I put nd filter on & get beautiful creamy bokeh while vlogging with 16mm 1.4
So, Sony A6300 and A6500 are not made anymore! 😳 But the faithful Sony A6000 are still made! 👌

The prices are what they should be - $599, $899, $1199. Three hundred dollars separating one model to the next one in the line. That should have been the price to start with. All are now reasonably priced.

@@bartomiejkomarnicki7506 I didn't. I am always on the lookout for open box deals and I was able to procure one for less than that price difference. I have a lot of Minolta MF glass that I like to use and the IBIS is an advantage. Even with lenses with OSS it's a nice thing to have. And the grip is great. Plus, I do think that Sony will have a firmware update that may prove interesting for this camera.
Damn, I'm looking for a second cam for videography. That a6600...I would immediately scoop it up if I still had a student email...
I'm really happy with my A6400 and yes I use the flash one thing missing on the A6600.

In the 1% of shots that it would be helpful for me then yes I miss it. But it's so much better than all the other cameras that it's been such a small sacrifice.
I was getting ready to reply, “I certainly won’t miss it. I never once used the onboard flash on my D5100 and thought, I’m glad I used that!”
So I went and tested the A6400. Took a great shot if not quite cool from low light with the kit 16-55mm. Ok, how about the kit 50-210mm? It’s only F4.5 and the barrel will surely shadow just like my D5100 did. I’m blown away. From pitch darkness it produced a perfectly clear picture with no shadowing at all. It took about 10 seconds to process but I’m impressed.
Thanks for the video. 6100 and 6600 were far to expensive when they came out. So this price drop was expected. I just dont understand why they did not make realistic prices from the beginning.

Was looking at the a6600 but honestly even at $900 it still begs me to consider the full frame models, if I upgrade at all. The old NEX6 has face tracking, similar sensor, and looks like the apsc line has only marginal photo upgrades overall.

The a72 (even though it isn’t 4K) is currently at $999 US depending on what you’re looking to do might be worth going with the a72 for the full frame aspect
Bro, people that go for A72 in 2020 for 999$, don't care about this video... They know exactly WHAT they need and WHY need it. APSC and FF are 2 different worlds. Lenses prices are totally different. Size of cameras and lenses are different. Autofocus on a6100/6400/6600 and A72 is different. If you're amateur/semi-pro photographer looking for a camera for a hobby, you shouldn't consider A72 as an option.
When you consider it has IBIS and can be used with vintage lenses and FF lenses are available everywhere it's a good deal. Tamron has a bunch of newer well priced lenses for it too
@@royhobbs785 you should never buy FF just because the older bodies are cheap. The glass is what kills your pockets. If you have the money, know exactly what you're doing and need, sure knock yourself out, but you should never suggest FF to a beginner. Even though most of the UA-camrs will have you believe everyone is USING FF, if you look at camera sales, over 90% of sales are APS-C or micro 4/3.
I have the A7ii and the A6500. The main reason I got the A7ii is that I wanted to get the FF for my photography (and the 2018 price of $899). For video, it would be my B cam. I see tremendous value in the A7ii body if your focus is photography and some video. It's like a FF A6000. With the exception of $$, it became my A6000 replacement, which was passed on to my daughter. For video, there is no comparison with the A6500, and when I saw the EDU deal on this video, I jumped on the A6600. I had no intention of paying the original price to upgrade from the A6500, but that $918 is a no brainer. $20 more than the A6400. In the mean time, while I sharpen my photography skills, I have not reached a limitation with the A7ii that was a result of inferior tech that the A7iii provides. While the AF is better on the A7iii, it is not enough to justify the expense, and almost every other advancement it has can be found in my A6500 or new A6600.

I'm still holding on to my a6300. To be honest the new lineup, while it have some awesome imrpovements, it doesn't have improvements that would matter to me.
For video work I have a monitor that also powers up my camera so I don't care about flippy screen or battery life.
For photography it's the same amount of megapixels between all of them so you can create excellent pictures with all of these cameras.
The features that I'm waiting for is 4k/60, sharper 120p slowmo, sharper 1080p in general and 10bit video recording.

Just subscribed, great reviews you do, love the one you compared the 6 sony alpha cameras, it seems a great camera the a6400, would you recommend the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Sony for the content that we do that is beyblade related (battles, Unboxings etc) , we use only camcorders but love the AF feature on this cameras. Upgraded my a6000 to an a6100 last week - B&H had an education discount down to $450! If I get even $200 for my a6000, the better autofocus will make it worth it

I bought a5100 in december 2018 so still not a long time ago. I'm super happy with it. I got it for 250euro with kitlens included so I think I couldn't have chosen better.
I think I'll upgrade it next year to at least a6100 but I learnt a lot and have taken many great photos thanks to this small camera.

A5100 is still a great cam, incredibly small and portable, I keep one for that reason alone even though I have Full frame Sony.
@@ceddo2511 As a budget second camera is almost unbeatable, for me it's better than the a6000 (mainly for touch-focus and I don't use EVF) they share the same sensor.
I'm curious to see a comparison between a5100 & a6100 and video quality (only), considering that they both lack of LOG profiles. I think the 6100 would be better when ISO rises, but with only a little differences.
If you check dpreview comparison you can see that < 800 ISO they are barely indistinguishable also in 1:1 pixel-peeping:

Might be normal business strategy: Pushing out the A6400 stock in holiday season. Now with lower stocks on that, lower a6100/a6600 to their intended prices

I just picked up a preowned a6000 for $350 with the kit lens. This is my first interchangeable lens camera so I’m totally satisfied since I don’t know what I’m missing. Waiting on delivery for a Sigma 30mm 1.4 I also picked up preowned for $170.
PS the AF improvements of the A6100 vs A6300/6500 etc is so impressive and amazing. I rarely need to use the 4-way controller. For people who photograph people, events, weddings and so on, the upgrade is worth so much. It's a huge step forward. The eyes are always in perfect focus in almost every photo. No need to zoom in to check the focus at the computer. Such a time saver.
I think the build quality, viewfinder and picture profiles in the a6400 justifies a pretty big price difference.

A6400 is still a good deal when bundled with the 18-135 in a kit. A6100 is not bundled so you pay the full price for the 18-135.
Hey Arthur. Absolutely love your videos and you obviously know your Sony.
I'm a hobbyist-photographer who has so far been taking pictures on a low-budget smartphone. I'm considering buying the A6000 and I know that it will be good enough for me all things considered. The thing is, I'm a kind of perfectionist and I have seen many reviews and pictures taken with the kit lens that comes with the A6000. It seems that the pictures turn out really blurry around the edges and corners of the lens, and heavy vignetting is also present. The aperture of the lens is also not so wide (3.5-5.6 if I remember correctly).
My question is:
Is there any zoom lens (I'd love a prime lens for its aperture and sharpness and overall quality but I compose my pictures very often by zooming - unfortunately I only have money for one) for the A6000 which has a decently wide aperture, is sharp and overall produces good pictures, and costs less than 300$/€?

Dude you wonder about perfect lens that doesn't exist unfortunately... The kit lens 16--55mm with f3.5-5.6 costs around 100-150$. And same focal length but f2.8 (less than 1 stop difference at wide aperture) costs 1300usd... You have 2 options here. If your budget is under 300$ and you need sharp photos so go for Sigma 30mm 1.4 and use Clear Image Zoom to get up to x2 zoom (30-60mm) and turn your lens to zoom one. By the way Sigma lenses r the most sharpest lenses for a6xxx. Second option is to buy 18-105mm f4 in used condition. It's fantastic lens! It's versatile. You can shoot landscapes at 18mm and you can make good portraits at 105mm with really nice bokeh (for f4 aperture)... Keep in mind Sigma 16mm f1.4 for around 350$. Good luck!

Yeah, I kind of know that I am looking for something inexistent but I am so new to this "business" of cameras and lenses and all these prices are just jaw dropping high, even for something that is not good at all or is average at best. Fuck, photography is a really expensive hobby, especially for someone from a country where the average monthly salary is around 300€ like me. What you are saying is that it actually is possible to zoom-in 2x with Sigma (if I understood correctly)?

I have a6400 + 16-55 + 18-105 + 35f1.8 + sigma16f1.4. If I could keep only 1-2 lenses I would definitely go for 18-105 as a first pick. Overall it's the best first lens for the beginners. You get sharp images + OSS. You get optical zoom. You can shoot landscapes and street photography at 18mm. You shoot portraits at 105mm. You can use all 18-105mm range for nature/animals/birds photos. It's most versatile for travelling. The only thing you cannot do, is to get perfect quality for evening/night photography. f4 is not enough to get best images in dark conditions (but you still get good quality). This is why I would keep Sigma16mm as my second pick. It's a night and bokeh beast! You get fantastic quality in dark conditions. It gives crazy bokeh for portraits and object photography. It's gives wide angle and crystal sharp quality.

@@nolejd50 Forgot to tell about Clear Image Zoom technology. It's not an optical zoom. According to Sony it's lossless quality digital zoom up to x2. But from my experience you lose in quality a lot. It's really low budget solution... I think 99% of Sony users don't use it.
Pretty neat to know. I hope that it will continue to drop little by little, so that I can justify buying a a6600 next year, haha. And just to mention it, it is possible to get a new a6400 body off something like ebay for ~700 bucks if you don't mind waiting a bit for the shipping.

Well, every review did complain that it was overpriced at $1400 and that a couple hundred dollars less would be more appropriate. So, it’s really nice that Sony listened to the comments. And I get it. If the a6600 had the bitrate and fps upgrades (10-bit and 4k at 60fps), then $1400 would have been considered 𝓹𝓻𝓲𝓬𝔂 but not 𝓸𝓿𝓮𝓻𝓹𝓻𝓲𝓬𝓮𝓭.

I bought my a6400 with kit lens and free Sony bag for 889Euro here in Belgium back in December. Fun fact, the a6400 body alone was more expensive at 1049Euro. But it gets even better. Today you can get the a6400 with kit lens + free SEL FE 50mm/1.8 of 889! Body alone with SEL FE 50mm/1.8 costs 999. So you're again paying less for more. Go figure :-)

I was deliberating between the 6000, 6100 and 6400. Went to visit a camera store (in UK) a couple of weeks ago to take a look but they only had 6000 and 6400. Walked out with the 6400 with 18-135 lens 😎

You buy all cameras you see on the market? I got a Sony A7 for 300 bucks, and a samyang 24mm f2.8 for 150 bucks... so for 450 bucks I got a full fram camera for less than those.
Really...regular price drops on older camera models is the flipside of planned/forced obsolescence that the camera companies do (in general all electronics). Thankfully this is better than the draconian pricing of software, where the companies simply stop selling older software versions rather than price them down!
Great points. bought 2 A6100s in December, they were 50 USD more than now. FOr video if you select Neutral color and decrease saturation and contrast all the way down, you get some pretty flat footage, and easier to grade. My beefs with the A6100 are that the EVF that could be sharper, and the fact that P and A mode are not really usable unless in bright light. I use Program (P) or Auto (A) for unpredictable situations, where you can go from bright to dim situations. The A6100, unlike the A6000, tends to choose slow shutter speeds to keep the ISO low. Terrible parameter choice for modes that are mostly used for candid people photos or street stuff. Do you know of any channel for feedback to Sony? I don't expect to have “Auto ISO minimum shutter speed” like in the pricier cameras, just a more sensible algorithm. I'd rather have 1/125 of a sec at ISO 800 than 1/30 at ISO 200 indoors.

Sony A6100 costs 957usd with kit lens in my country. No used deals on the A6400 as people only buy Canon/Nikon entry-level cameras and never upgrade even the kit lens.
I never buy a new release camera. Just got the A6400 last month for $900. Just got the A6600 two weeks ago for $1220. Got the 24mm F1.4 GM lens for $1248 last week. All told about $500 in savings if you can wait.
Here in PH they still sell the a6500 body only around $760, the same price with a6000 + 18-50 mm lens.

The price of an a6100 have gone down in Norway too, the a6600 cost exactly the same as when it was released.
Doesnt seem like that. The A6100 body sits at 922 usd (NOK 8489), the A6400 body sits at 1117 usd (NOK 10287), and the A6600 body sits at 1738 usd (NOK 15996). With kit lenses included; A6100 1030 usd, and A6400 1177 usd. So, they are high priced compared to the discount in the US. Best bet now though would likely to get the A6400 with kit lenses, since that price is almost the same as A6100 with lenses. Still, I'll likely wait longer to see better price drops.
@@janingenygard6151 I thought I saw a lower price on a6100, obviously I was wrong. Everybody think that A7iv will be released soon. In Norway the A7iii cost as much as it did 2 years ago. I feel sorry for those who pay NOK 22950 for an A7iii in february 2020.
Yeah, just gotta be patient I guess. The high end ones will hopefully drop eventually :P
Aren’t these price drops indication there is something new coming from Sony? Like an A7000 APSC series with 8K (32MP)? or still 24MP but 6K recording (full sensor reading?)
Paul, these bodies were release less than two months ago. Sony usually only drops prices for older models until AFTER the new models are released. This seems much more like a response to the market as they probably weren't selling as well as they expected at their release price points. Like for me, I wanted the A6600 but wasn't going to spend $1400 so I instead bought a used A6500, but then a couple weeks later I was able to snag a deal from Greentoe on the A6600 so I've since returned the A6500. I bet we will see the current price points ($598, 798, 1198) flatten out for a awhile now and settle into that niche.
The only thing we know for sure is the A7IV is coming in the next month or two.... according to rumors.
John Scott correct me if I’m wrong but returning a recently bought product because you got a better deal elsewhere really isn’t an option here in Europe, at least not here in Belgium. Though I can see serious drops in prices even for the 6400 here. Seems like the 6400 really is the best value currently, at least here. Very tempting. By that I mean 1050€ to 900€ body only.That’s 150€ or 14% off. Not bad.
@@paulvanobberghen Not sure for you - but the A6500 I purchased used was from B&H and they offer a 30 day return policy, so it was no problem. Most companies have restocking fees on new cameras though of around 15% though - to avoid people who buy a camera, use it on their vacation then promptly return it for a full refund.
The only indication my friend is that sells for the 6400 was much higher than the the other two and they had to do something about it...
Would love to see a video using the a6600 comparing the sigma 56mm 1.4 and the sony 35mm 1.8 lenses
I bought my A6600 for $1200 during the Christmas sale. I think Sony discounted these cameras because the 6100 and 6600 weren't selling. The 6100 was too close to the 6400, and the 6600 was too close to the A7iii. All the reviewers are telling people to buy the A7iii over the A6600. Also, the other problem is, the A6600's biggest competition is the Fuji X-T3 which most will say is a better camera.
Here in Australia the Sony store has the three listed at $1300, $1400, and $2300, that's Aussie dollars. So far they are not following the US price drop.
I'd like to see a price drop on the a6400 as I've been thinking of moving up from my a6000.
sony a6400 is good camera, I have bought three lenses sigma 16mm F1.4 for low light shoot, 18mm-105mm F4.0 as defulat, and 55mm - 210mm for tele lense. Only the battery time is not sat.

what do you need from the camera?? for example I needed Zbattery/ibis/flippy/eyeAF so went with a6600 & love making vlog videos with it, the eye AF is very sticky & the battery never runs out

great price, but if you want to shoot with 105mm sigma without ois, bis would help a lot. considering performance and usability, a6600 is the only one.
If I want to take pictures in concert settings, should I just buy a camera body and lens separately? Or would kit lenses be sufficient in low light fast movement with the alpha series?
kit lens is not sufficient in low light with apsc sensors, sigma with 1.4 aperture is the answer, I love using my 16mm 1.4 for vlogs, even during the day(just put nd filter on for great bokeh
Found the A6600 New for 1k cash...too good to pass up compared to the other similar cameras...will shoot with this for a while..

The A6600 with the 18-135mm is $1238.40. I originally got the 16-55 and 50-210mm. I’m not terrible impressed with them so might go with this instead.

The lens mount on the a6400 i just received is extremely tigh and very hard to mount and dismount a lenst. This is the second copy; I sent the first one back to B & H for the same reason. Is this normal for the camera?

Hey man, have you ever experienced the ISO dial wheel being a like “stuck” not smooth to rotate on your a6400? I was gonna shoot yesterday and it felt odd. After half an hour of turning the wheel I felt like a pop click feeling and it felt normal again. Any thoughts?

I just ordered a A6400 with the kit lense, only because it was reduced down almost 20%. Weird part, the body only is still almost 200 euro more still on amazon (sweden).
It was to good to let go, so now im waiting for it, to replace my A6000.
I dont really need the kit lense, i have the 18-105 F4 and 70-350, they have worked well for me so far but it might be easier to sell the A6000 if i sell it with the kit lense.. As it is in great condition.
