Doutzen I love your city too. Even in the rain. I was there in November & it was perfect. It wasn’t overcrowded, the weather was chilly & invigorating. The history, the architecture, the museums, coffee shops, food and all the bicycles are what makes your city so magical ❤️
Amsterdam is one of my favorite places in the world. The people are genuinely so kind and loving. Traveling in europe can be sometimes daunting for people who are not caucasian but i can say that the people in Amsterdam made me feel so incredibly welcome. Can’t wait to go again in the future

That's mostly tourist spots you're naming and you won't meet a lot of locals there. There's a lot of peaceful cosy blocks in the city centre with great restaurants and atmosphere. The average Parisian also won't be seen near the Sacre Cœur during tourist season.

Similarly to Barcelona, they are both cities that receive more tourism that they can have from their size. Unfortunately for Amsterdam, "whores and drugs" doesn't attract quality tourism.
yaszsz I hate to admit it now, but I had also stereotyped Amsterdam before my first visit and thought I would hate it, but one walk down the beautiful Herengracht with the beautiful canal houses and around the Negen Straatjes was enough to make me realise how close minded I had been. The Red Light is one tiny area which I agree with you is ugly and sad to witness but also so easy to avoid, and the biking is really easy and so much healthier than being stuck in a car. You’re right the food and service isn’t great though 😄 I’ve just spent the day sailing around the beautiful canals in a little boat - totally unique for a capital city. For me Amsterdam is a fantastic city to live in with chilled people and a great work/life balance. I haven’t seen a stag/hen in 3 years of living here, and found it really easy to make friends because it’s small, friendly and inclusive. A dream after living in unfriendly London.

A nice-to-see type of place, but not worthy spending a week of your time there. The tourist hoards coming to see a bit of cheese, clogs and the redlight district makes it super crowded. So choose the times before or after the tourist rush season. Accessible good dining is also hard and expensive to come by. In short, it starts to look like any normal city out there and commercialized beyond recognition. For ‘culture’ tourists it is also going to be a bit of a dissapointment too. Beyond exposeing superficial colonial exploits its thats as much as good as it gets. But if you are into shopping, you wont be dissapointed. Amsterdam was once the worlds trading centre and that is where the Dutch excel If your looking for a party and a good time though, this is the place to be
