Check and make sure you don't have a blown head gasket make sure your fans are coming on and working properly you have a low speed and a high-speed you got to relay fuses for fan one two and three you also have two fuses and another relay fuse is for the HVAC you also have a bleeder on it you have to make sure you purge the system anytime you after the repairs sometimes the bleeder where you would bleed the air out sometimes the bleeder goes bad sometimes the radiator gets too much rust and isn't able to circulate and the radiator is bad or it could be a something as simple as your heater core put new lines on it cedar hose lines radiator lines heater core lines that's a check ✅
My 01 basic runs hot too. Any water in the system, including 50/50 just boils out thru the overflow tube. So, I use only pure green coolant. My fans are weird, only one runs until I turn on my AC, then both will run. It's better but not great, can't go very far on the freeway, maybe 15 miles. It gradually over heats more and more. 217,00 miles and it's great for around town driver.
That is completely normal. Every single 3100 Malibu runs that hot when sitting still or going really slow. My scan tool says coolant fans are commanded on at 223*F I think. I agree thats really hot in my opinion, but mine has done it since it had 13 miles on it back in 99' and still does it with almost 240,000 miles. It wont hurt anything. Mine always runs one notch below the middle line when driving, but after sitting still awhile it will slowly climb to about 3 notches above before the fans come on. Its just the way it is designed.
And that while sensor behind the bumper you pointed out is the Air Bag sensor. I would really plug that bag in buddy! Lol. Nice car btw. I love this Gen Malibus.
+Chevymalibuls I got a buddy that says that its not normal and shouldnt get over 210 and got some other ppl on malibu fb pages saying that there temp stays at a lil under the middle line or just a hair above the middle line and got 2 maybe 3 ppl saying there car is doing the same as mine and they fixed the prob by bleeding the cooling system or replacing the cap and or pressure overflow tank or replacing the temp sensor. i have done all that and its still doing this. had a gm guy tell me that when the intake gaskets go bad and the system cant build pressure anymore the pcm or ecu reprograms the fan kick on temp to a higher temp setting and has to be flashed or reprogramed, said the car should stay around 195 -210 and the fans should come on around those temps. i dont know whats right and whats not right lol ive been dealing with this for 6 or 7 months now.
+Chevymalibuls ahh for sure thanks man. i wasnt sure what it was and didnt get any readings from it, think i just got a ohm load from it. its pluged in now. thanks man, im still working on her to get her back to 100% or at least 90% lol. I deff have a liking for these malibus.
+rich jania Haha no problem. Just trust me dude. I have been through every nut, bolt and sensor on these cars. I know them like the back of my had now lol. Its just the way the PCM is programed. Do your fans come on by themselves when it reaches about 3 notches above the middle line? Thats when they are designed to come on. I agree thats too hot, but you cant change it unless you reflash the ECM which is very expensive. When I was worrying about mine running that hot, I did head and intake gaskets, replaced all hoses and the pressure cap. It still did it and my cooling system is in tip top shape now. I am still running dex-cool because dex-cool isnt the problem. It becomes a problem when people never flush it and its corrosion properties "go away" and it starts eating up things inside the engine.
For sure man. ill trust you lol and yea my fans do kick on when it reaches about 3 notches from the middle line, just kinda thought that was a lil to high. its just weird that 1 min ill be sitting at a light for a good 3min or so and temp slowly climbs up. Then i start moving and temp slowly climbs back down to just a bit under the middle line, but ill go with you on that. Just wish i could get a lil more input from other 5th gen malibu owners and see how there cars are doing. I read a lot abot dexcool and heard about thing i didnt see on line so im just gonna stick with normal green coolant and its not effecting the car in any way at all so thats a plus. Thanks for your help and input man and thanks for watching!
Your fans will burn out sooner. Try to wire them to a switch that way when youre on the highway you can turn them off, or even use a dimmer switch so you can change its speed. I had same problem.
What would be wrong with a 2004 Honda Accord it turns over good but won't start the guys put new sensors in it I'm thinking it's a main computer in the car that's not telling the other sensors anybody got any ideas kind of like it's not getting fire got brand new spark plug wires
that white sensor you showed is a crash sensor you hit something hard it deploys your air bags and you got lucky when you unplugged it and plugged it back in your airbags didn't deploy
Mine does exact same thing I’ve only got 44k on odo. No coolant head gasket issues for mine as of yet so it’s fan/thermostat related on these models 100%. I’ve been averaging lil under 300 miles per fill up. Not too shabby considering $20 nearly fills the tank
The temperature sensor should come on , after the engine passes operating temperature..your temp gauge goes from 100 to 260 , check to see which temp your thermostat is set to open if it's set at 190 then the fan should come on about 5 degrees above that temp ..maybe 10 ? Count the number of lines on your gauge do the math to find the temp that matches your thermostat..your fans should come on in that neighborhood ..how ever your fans may not come on if the car is in motion .. because of the natural airflow going threw the radiator ..which should be sufficient to keep the engine cool while the car is in motion . These engines are aluminum and partially air cooled to a certain extent .. double check your temp against the rating of the thermostat , the fan doesn't actually come on as often as you would think ..if the system is working properly ? Coolant also plays a factor in your system you can test that with a hydrometer ..also it wouldn't hurt to do an exterior radiator flush .. which means clean the radiator from the outside..200,000 miles is a lot of road dirt build up ..
my malibu runs like this too but the engine is strong and the car doesn't idle rough. once it goes past the red line for a few minutes I guess my fans kick on bc it will return to the middle pretty fast. some idiot put two different types of coolants in the resrevior tank and so I have to get it flushed since its just full of sludge now.
Drew Stokes yes I did that. I did so much to this car to try to fix it and nothing changed it. Only thing I did not Chang the water pump. I sold the car and she still runs good for the new owner
That's completely normal with the Malibu. I had an 03 that I recently traded in. My temp gauge would stay slightly above the middle when sitting still or moving in slower traffic.
My 2007 Chevy malibu does this ive not understood why but after a little digging jt could be the radiator being clogged the car is not getting good calculations on the air flow which could explain why they come on when it gets really hot the ecm could be to blame but is expensive and most likely not the culprit this seems like a big headache and i know how you feel.
David Alverson did it take to to a vid or a link? I no longer have the car and everyone who has or owns one said that's just what they do since day one but I still feel that this is to hot for it to be running
1st I want to say that I know nothing about a Malibu! however, a family member who lives out of town has a 02 Malibu with a 3.1 and it has a stalling problem either when they come to a stop or when they change gears? not exactly sure?? don't overlook another problem while trying to solve another problem! example; I had a 97 Cadillac deville de elegance w/32 valve northstar-Y vin code! o2 sensor was bad but the motor was overheating & I figured, heck with a o2 sensor,i have to fix overheating problem! after replacing everything it turned out to be the 02 sensor causing ALL THE OVERHEATING PROBLEMS!!! I WAS NAIVE!!!! WITH SO MANY MILES ON YOUR CAR, IT COULDNT HURT TO CHANGE YOUR WATER PUMP PREEMPTIVELY, B4 IT FAILS! Also, could control your engine temp with your antifreeze mixture & get a lower temp thermometer but< all of whitch can cause a lean or rich problem_o2 problems?
replace thermostat to a 180 car be happy those secondary fans dont come o till about 210 or some crap they will come on much earlier with the AC on always run this car with the effing ac on. lol
my 97 runs about 2 notch above the center line and fans dont really ever come on unless its really hot outside, one fan will come on at like 230 or something like that and the other one even hotter, for people who still have this car
HEY! this might help you out! I just replace all the gaskets because my car's engine started eating coolant and then the timing chain cover gasket blew up , on the way I also replace the water pump and thermostat, so I flushed the cooling system and I refilled it with prestone coolant the green one , but when I first crank it everything seemed fine, but when it warm up it started spitting all the coolant, so I research and well the first problem to check was the THERMOSTAT (even though it was new) and guess what, THAT WAS THE PROBLEM! the new thermostat wasn't open all the way, I reinstall the old one but with a new rubber gasket, problem fixed ... by the way DON'T FORGET TO BLEED the air, otherwise it will over heat again. I hope this helps you all out!
I watched where the thermostat had to be in a certain way. If there is any it has a breather on 1 side of the thermostat and that breather should be in in top when installing. Just a side note to the discussion
+Erik Klink The engine light was on be cause of a vac leak and bad purge vent solenoid. The engine light is off now and i still am having the cooling fan problems.

+Erik Klink That would be awesome! Anything helps. Its a good car and i would like the cooling fans to work when they should. Car will get up to 195 or 210 and still no cooling fans and i dont wanna rigg it up to make them work on a switch.
i have the same problem, also when i turn my car off it also kills the fans so the radiator fluid just boils without the fans staying on for at least 3 min to help cool. right now i just turn on and off the ac to get the fans working. another great design from G.M.
No GM car has ever operated the fans after turning off the key. There is no need. If you hear boiling, you likely have a bad radiator cap or other issues.
fans dont normally come on and will come on with AC if you hear like a chugging sound it is air in the coolant, you have a little bleeder that you can purge the air from the system since the radiator is below the engine,
American cars used to be cheap in all areas,(plastics, engines, platforms, electronics), I used to have a Malibu from this generation 2001 LS bought it in México, it took me 13 years to fix it, by the end I replaced everything about the cooling system and even the almost blown head gasket I had, at the end it ran like a normal non overheating car, but the temperature still was above mediaum of 1/2 if the temp gauge bue stopped getting near the red line---- at the end I was so pissed that I sold it and bought a used Honda Civic 2005 LX Special Edition which already has 149k mile and runs very sweet
+Sp33dy TuRbO No i did not. From what i have been told this is normal for these cars. I dont like it but ill put the fans on a switch or find a ajustble fan temp switch. Still gotta look into that more tho first.

makes me wonder if there is a way to control exactly @ what temp the fans come on? If changing the temp sensor would help? maybe use a different temp sensor from a different make & model?
D.j. B the temp sensor is what tell the ECM what the temperature is and the ECM turns on the fans. The ECM would need to be reflashed and set for a lower temperature. Could use aftermarket parts to make the fans their own circuit with a separate temp sensor and wiring.
What did you say about the check engine light? I have the same code and even have the computer replaced, but it still came on. It doesn't effect the functioning of the car, right? Just the registration/inspection
Its suposed the engine fan start working at the 2 or 3 line above the normal those malibus runs that way chevrolet said they dont have the time to work with the needles calibration at the time of released of the car cause they were behind schedule the 2 or 3rd line above its suposed to be the middle when the car reach that lines the fans will start running to go back to normal that doesnt mean its over heating... If you drain the coolant when you fill it up again you have to open a released valve to fill the water pump and the other cooling areas with coolant if not your car is not going to fill those areas with coolant and overheat
not sure if you still have the car but there is a good chance of the problem being one of your pcv air hoses being cracked or broke which if there is, the symptoms would be car running really ruff and wanting to die like what was going on in the video. good luck.
Try another thermostat with a lower opening temp. Or try temp sensor. Both cheap I would replace both. Mine didn't open up till then either 210 ish. I see whatcha got their on the radiator, interesting. Look it up might need a new one of those.
its noit normal these cars have a problem with the lower intake maifold blowing out gaskets, need replaced it will leak out the back of youer motor right below the egr valve area at the intake area. you can bleed it all you want, youll be wasting anitifrees\ze always filling it updon't bother using stop leak, that will make it worse, you have to replace that gasket lower intake manifold 75.00 the kit costs and a bit of time to do it
My 07 malibu dose the same thing I've replaced the thermostat and the colent temperature sensor BUT my car with the air on will get really cold and eventually the gage will turn off with my air and will come back later Help memememe
your temperature control head is faulty, this is a common problem with this generation of malibus. there is a video on youtube on how to fix it for free. It shows you how to clean the contacts inside the temperature control head part.

Unhook the cooling sensor like I did they come on with the car and go off with the car
I had to rewire my fans to the side fuse box to get them to turn on when the car cranks. 💯✔

bet that sluges wasnt from the twio different type antifreeze
Vacuum lines, gas cap
It's normal, I have a 98, and the normal temperature is 107 c (225 f)
did you fix that problem????
Come to find out it’s normal even tho it doesn’t seem normal. All Malibus do this. Even my 08 Silverado. The fans don’t kick on until 225° or 235°
bcm. body control module is known to go bad. did you bleed the air out of the coolant system?
Drew Stokes yes I did that. I did so much to this car to try to fix it and nothing changed it. Only thing I did not Chang the water pump. I sold the car and she still runs good for the new owner
The guy I bought the Malibu from was screwing around with the BCM. Overheating issues, constantly. I think you may be right.
There is more than one relay for the fans. Two if not three of them.
That's completely normal with the Malibu. I had an 03 that I recently traded in. My temp gauge would stay slightly above the middle when sitting still or moving in slower traffic.
My car is a 2003 Chevy Malibu and only way it's cools down highway

on th subject line above I put in "2000 chev malibu cooling system relief valve" as a search.
AUTOTECH210 shows how to fix this common problem.

replace thermostat to a 180 car be happy
those secondary fans dont come o till about 210 or some crap
they will come on much earlier with the AC on
always run this car with the effing ac on. lol
Exactly 210. I hooked my secondary fan up on a toggle switch. I couldn't get the primary to work on a toggle
The fans will come on when temp reaches 223 degrees
my 97 runs about 2 notch above the center line and fans dont really ever come on unless its really hot outside, one fan will come on at like 230 or something like that and the other one even hotter, for people who still have this car

Get a lower temp thermostat
with the engine light and the error code p40448 or whatever code could means a multitude of things like EGR valve o2 sensor, etc. theres a big list

becareful with those plastic car ramps, make some wooden ramps much safer.
I have had both the plastic and metal ones collapse before and neither was with a large or heavy vehicle.
make some???
lol....
hold on while i go forage the woods for lumber and make myself some car ramps
did you figured out the problem yet?
+Sp33dy TuRbO No i did not. From what i have been told this is normal for these cars. I dont like it but ill put the fans on a switch or find a ajustble fan temp switch. Still gotta look into that more tho first.
+rich jania I think the fan switch is the way to go, so you know their on at all times..
+Sp33dy TuRbO I think thats my best option now. Hey, did you found the solution?
yes temp is normal for fans to turn on but you can have pcm reprogram for them to come on sooner go to www.milzymotorsports.com
am I reading wrong, site says come on at 180?
Its suposed the engine fan start working at the 2 or 3 line above the normal those malibus runs that way chevrolet said they dont have the time to work with the needles calibration at the time of released of the car cause they were behind schedule the 2 or 3rd line above its suposed to be the middle when the car reach that lines the fans will start running to go back to normal that doesnt mean its over heating... If you drain the coolant when you fill it up again you have to open a released valve to fill the water pump and the other cooling areas with coolant if not your car is not going to fill those areas with coolant and overheat
I know for sure cause im a owner..of a chevy malibu 98
Thats the lil screw right ?
My car I got a 2000 chevy malibu too and my fans aren't working too
thermostat
Yes, this is normal. The thermostat is designed to open at 195. The fans kick in when the gauge gets much hotter.
Bro you’re a life saver I just did a min ago it Really works
What you had to do to get it to work ?
100% blown head gasket The same problem
Mike Moreno the head gasket was ok still. Car ran grate and did not get to hit or overheat on me at all.
not sure if you still have the car but there is a good chance of the problem being one of your pcv air hoses being cracked or broke which if there is, the symptoms would be car running really ruff and wanting to die like what was going on in the video. good luck.
Try another thermostat with a lower opening temp. Or try temp sensor.
Both cheap I would replace both.
Mine didn't open up till then either 210 ish. I see whatcha got their on the radiator, interesting. Look it up might need a new one of those.
Take the marbles out and put in some oil lol . Same crap w/my 02 & 03 cooling fans look cool though.. lol
Coolamt Temp sensor is bad!
its noit normal these cars have a problem with the lower intake maifold blowing out gaskets, need replaced it will leak out the back of youer motor right below the egr valve area at the intake area. you can bleed it all you want, youll be wasting anitifrees\ze always filling it updon't bother using stop leak, that will make it worse, you have to replace that gasket lower intake manifold 75.00 the kit costs and a bit of time to do it
you probably need a new Catalytic Converters it might be the problem
My 07 malibu dose the same thing I've replaced the thermostat and the colent temperature sensor BUT my car with the air on will get really cold and eventually the gage will turn off with my air and will come back later Help memememe
your temperature control head is faulty, this is a common problem with this generation of malibus. there is a video on youtube on how to fix it for free. It shows you how to clean the contacts inside the temperature control head part.
