    I have one of those "old grinders". I have multiple cutters for mine. Makes wonderful julienne potatoes. Goes to show how old we all are. I got mine in the late 70s.

    I love the old products. I figure if they’ve lasted 50-75 years of someone else, they’ll endure my use. Bread is the same way when freezing. What happens is when we open it frozen, all the condensed moisture escapes and we are left with dry bread or crumbled cheese. Letting it sit on the counter to defrost allows the moisture that was wicked out in the freezer to be absorbed back into the food. I had no idea about the cornstarch though Miss Renea. That is such a great tip that I really appreciate and will use.

    I'm glad to see that there's another old gadget Queen out there because I have a lot of gadgets from the past that I just can't seem to get rid of and I really enjoyed seeing somebody else bringing one of theirs out and showing it that you always don't need the latest in the greatest fancy gadgets sometimes with Grandma's used gadgets are the best and by the way thank you for that nice little tip using cornstarch when we grate the cheese have a great day and be sure to stay safe 🥰 Tina

    I've used a grater like that for so many things. Found a new in the box (50 years old) grater at a thrift store recently. Love it. Thank you.

    It is 100% true cellulose powder is made from wood, And it is in store bought shredded cheese. Cellulose powder is in wall insulation. I’m sorry dear but you were wrong There’s all kinds of information on it on UA-cam.😊

    I love the music to your videos. I remember my mother had a similar grater (I've got a hand-held plastic one with the metal barrels)- don't know what happened to it. I have her runner bean stringer and hand cranked mixer. Still using several of her old saucepans. She used to work in London and when the big department stores had a sale on she would buy the best cooking pans and utensils, fabrics, bedding and towels she could afford so she'd never have to replace them.

    Does the cornstarch change the consistency of the food that you are cooking with the cheese? Also, does the corn starch affect the meltiness of the shredded cheese?

    Great idea. Since I’m low carb maybe I could try adding arrowroot or xanthan gum powder. Fresh shredded cheese is so sticky. I’m going to try!

    I use shredded cheese in my eggs every morning. I started shredding my own cheese but the problem I have is that if I shred the whole block at once & bag it, it clumps in the refrigerator. I don't freeze it because I use it up relatively quickly but this corn starch tip might be the solution I need!

    Are you able to thaw this on the counter and then put in the refrigerator to use a little at a time, or should you portion out and freeze? Hope that makes sense 🙂

    How long will shredded cheese last in the freezer? I've considered dehydrating it but not quite sure how it would turn out because of the oil content in it! Something for you to try in your freeze dryer when you get it!! Let us know how it turns out!
    Wish I could find one of those old graters. Nothing but junk on the market these days!

    • @LittleVillageHomestead
      @LittleVillageHomestead  2 роки тому

      I really am not sure just how long it can last in the freezer. my guess would be 6 -9 months for the best quality, however, mine gets used up in a few months and it is wonderful. Yes I do plan to freeze dry cheese and so much more and videos for sure.

    Is this American process chess like from comodities or hard cheese. Didn't American tend to clump as you grate it? Does the corn starch easily mix so it will not clump. If so I have alot in my freezer to process. I get a monthly senior box, also pick up commodities at the same time. Last month I was given a case. What to do what do. Flat bags will take less space in the freezer. Thank You In Advance. I would appreciate your helpful information on this topic

    so it is ok to refreeze the cheese? You cant do that with a lot of things.

    • @LittleVillageHomestead
      @LittleVillageHomestead  Рік тому

      You can refreeze alot of things that people do not know about. When my hubby and I used to haul refrigerated foods they would be thawed and refroze more than you could imagine. It is not unsafe to refreeze foods, however, it may alter the taste or texture or quality.
