It is insanity that the police don’t incorporate BJJ techniques AS STANDARD in their police training curriculum.
As a long time corrections officer and Jiu jitsu practitioner, I can shed at least a little light on that. It takes years of dedicated training 2-3x/week to get proficient enough at arm bars, triangled, kimuras, sweeps, transitions, etc. Police academies simply don't have enough training time to impart all the knowledge and training reps to Turn you into a Jiu jitsu badass. That's why they train Basic strikes/blocks to taser to firearm. Some street cops and corrections officers (aka "prison guards"), like me, consider it a labor of love and train in our off time

As a former police officer myself, the defensive tactics training I received in the academy, paled in comparison to the martial arts training I endured outside of the academy years before I joined and following my law enforcement career. You have to want it for yourself. In this error of “Defund The Police”, many people don’t understand that, that’s the absolute last thing you want to do! A poorly applied restraint hold can be the difference between life and death… Just ask Derek Chauvin, how his “restraint hold” worked out for him. Proper training would’ve probably had a better result than the chaos we saw in its aftermath. 👊🏾

Jiu Jitsu really did market itself in this video even with a concealed carry most people couldnt rack a slide with one hand but this dude(admittedly really good) was able to defend himself with literally a busted arm.

Bellevue Washington police are now required todo a certain number of hours of Gracie jujitsu each month. Their police department is an official Gracie training facility.
Let’s hope this idea spreads.

I agree. If Renton Redmond, Woodinville and others follow it will encourage Seattle to start training.
Then a couple years of data and they can show the world it’s useful.
In the end I think it’s about good data. Which is not always easy to get.

Ok pulling guard does actually work, even with 1 arm you cant say pulling guard dont work
Dude, he used it because he literally had no other options, and the fact that he couldn't even finish his choke despite the fact that he is a black belt should be telling enough...the risks you expose yourself to by pulling guard in a street fight are insanely high, it should be avoided as much as one can.
He was still robbed. So if the goal was to avoid being robbed, it failed. Gotta look at it from all perspectives.
You gotta be damn good to pull the off in a streetfight, unless the other guy is at some huge disadvantage. A guy at the gym I used to train at, probably the best triangle guy there got slammed in a streetfight. Still his go to finish, but it can go very badly on hard surface.
You're also in big trouble if there is more than one attacker.
I've been in 6 unwanted street fights. Only 1 vs 1 attacker. This dude is LUCKY he was gifted a 1 in 6 situation. Don't be delusional - no one posts the more frequent reality bc bad for marketing.

I try to always focus on locking techniques when I practice. I don't know how to choke or how to go prone and roll. I am great at setting up throws and takedowns. About 15 years ago, I decided to learn all the takedowns I could! I know a lot of squatting locks from Silat.
