- Roger and Ray Davis recording session for Kareem's NBA music video tribute "I'm So Happy"
See my Kareem Tribute Video: I'm So Happy to hear the finished song.
NBA Entertainment and Warner Bros. selected Roger to perform the song that I wrote for Kareem Abdul Jabbar's Music Video tribute. This was the third and final NBA music video tribute that I made. I started a fourth project, one for Majic Johnson but that project never saw completion.
The late Ray Davis was talented singer who was the original bass singer and one of the founding members of The Parliaments, Parliament and Funkadelic. He also performed in The Original P which consisted of four founding members of Parliament, and he was briefly in The Temptations. Davis replaced the original bass singer of the Temptations Melvin Franklin on the album For Lovers Only and was in the group after Franklin's death in 1995. Davis left the group after being diagnosed with throat cancer. In later years, he performed with former Temptation Glenn Leonard in Leonard's group, The Temptations Experience. Davis died on the evening of Tuesday, July 5, 2005, of respiratory problems.
I hope you enjoy this behind the scenes footage of Roger and Ray.

Ray Davis, one of The
Original founders of
Parliament Funkadelic.
Feeling privileged to see Roger's process. And with the one and only Ray Davis no doubt.
Me too

Ray Davis is the man. Troutman should have lived longer. He obviously knew what he was doing with this funk stuff.
You cannot respect anyone in the studio more than Roger Troutman because he was a genius and a master at so many instruments/production tools.
Solo agregaría que en ese estudio estaban dos grandes leyendas del R&B.Davies, una leyenda por si sola😉
Wasn't Prince and Stevie Wonder both masters and many instruments/production tools?
YES! Absolutely.......Roger was right there with them.actually Stevie....Prince and then Roger Troutman! @@HypnoticHollywood
Now we know why all his songs sound so great. Roger was a perfectionist. Look at how many times he rehearsed and re-did each little phrase of the lyrics.
Roger Troutman was in the zone boy, no doubt he had a deep passion for his music this vid is evudence of how much he was into his craft..R.I.P
Ray was & still is a mentor 2 me. Ray was the one who introduce me to Melvin Franklin of the Temptations, in the mid 80's.
This is wonderful with the late Ray Davis of PFUNK and Roger. Ray was a great friend, had a wonderful voice, one of the voices that made PFUNK the other was Glenn Goins - RIP. March 29th is Ray's birthday.
That's my mom's birthday 🎉🎉🎂
Don't forget Junie.
Roger Troutman is a genius
Punch in king!!! This man was so dope.
his music was way ahead of its time, his songs like more Bounce to the Once, so ruff so tuff, you should be mine,, computer love, I wanna be your man, chocolade city or his version of living in the city and much more are timeless , until now and in the future. I love you Roger forever, you will BE not forget, never !!!
A perfectionist wasn't he? Miss u Roger!
Wow, again. I've watched this 10 times. It's amazing to see Ray Davis (Mr tear the roof of this sucker) from Parliament taking direction from Roger Troutman. Video 1 shows him doing his own vocal part. Now this. He had already done Shirley Murdocks part. I love it!
I want that Zapp jacket that Ray has on! Love you Both, DEARLY.

Thats the way real Art was made in the day!!! Today we just program a star out of anyone!
He calls his guitar Clarence, that's great!
RAY DAVIS & MELVIN FRANKLIN are so identical!! R.I.P to both bass men & ROGER!!
It's crazy how rap is recorded like this: punching in and outside the vocal booth with the engineer or producer next to the console. Legendary footage 🔥
6:24 Classic Roger in the session.

Man he inspires to go super hard in the studio he had wonderful work ethic. Awesome
Wow! Unreal. I miss the both of them.
Troutman would have been a gramny, osar, winner king of funk by now, maybe even r&b just all around artist.
Yes thats true
@boogie504 I believe Roger has always been drug free--he doesn't even drink or smoke. His brain is so fresh that's why he's so funky.
Whoever disliked this video, they are clearly not talented at all👎💀 #Legends
A visionary and perfectionist it's amazing how many times he sings a word or phrase to get the right nuance/inflection he's looking for
i cant beleive i am watching this rigt now
this is amazing
thank u thank u thank thank u
roger fan for life
p
Wow all that great tracking with no pop filter and music bleeding in the mic. Still hot! Roger changed the game forever
"Youre powerful, i just cant punch and do it at the same time" lol sting ray was a beast
I laughed my @ss off at that! The real Roger behind the music. That's my dude!
Absolutely BRILLIANT!!! HollywoodVisual I'm so envious, From the first beat of the first time I heard "More Bounce' in 1980 I knew i'd found 'Da Funk'
He didn't make that beat George Clinton and boosty Collins produced that more to the ounce beat
that dude knew how to make a record fast
Sometimes you make an album its gonna long month get your projects together
and all my love goes out to you, roger! rest in peace!
thank you happy hoildays
IM SO HAPPY I found this . I watched NBA Superstars almost every Saturday morning until I was 20 and DVDs took over . IYKYK
Old school they creating funk in suits and ties 🤘🏾
I love it love it love it
ONE WORD...GENIUS!!
Exactly💯Genius.🕶️
@Jtheflavor83 For him to be so gifted in this age of sometimes very less talented artists who are extremely arrogant--his humor relaxed you and he was so humble about his gift and also getting the best out of you whether in the studio or the stage of Life. If we only had more artists like him in today's generation to be that Harmonious to bring the masses together...!
Watching this, makes it so much more frustrating that Roger is no longer with us... I would have loved to see what he could have come up with these days! Great video, thanks for posting :)
Genius
This video is beautiful man. I know if Roger was alive today, he would still be putting out hits.
What a true legend and talent, what a tragic loss. I'm still bumping his fine work
Also a very good singer, really a complete artist
@Mace Cee I was about to say the same thing - Roger couldn't sing.
I need this song
@lanier2 Prince and Michael dominated that era, but I miss him as well. I met the Troutman Family a while back in Ohio before I actually knew about Roger. But I feel all of us who appreciate, play, and write the funk have a little bit of Roger in us. He was so full of Life and Highly faithful in his Creator that gave him his great talent. When I'm in the studio today and from now on his spirit will be me hopefully guiding me to keep it on the One!
I was wondering what "Sky Hooking" meant, then I saw it was a song for Kareem and now I get it. Thanks for sharing these videos
What a voice…
look at these real artists for one phrase look how much time and redoing the same phrase for more than 10 times to make it perfect, real producers and singers, thats why their music stay forever. ALGERIAFUNK- Zapp forever
talk about some hard work. this is what you go through nefore the fame and fortune and during. its called recording to perfection
incredible video... never saw Roger like this...
Wow what a producer!
Love, love, LOVE Roger!
Funk Masters RIP..... Thanks 4 sharing this ultra Funky video...

Ray davis probably went to sleep hearing “you have me courage” all night.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
@HollywoodVisual Keeps these important archives coming so we can teach the New Breed! Thank you so much!
So much inspiration to see the process of greatness
Maddd producer!!
@lanier2 That was the Bomb along with his great outfits he would grace the stage with...!
and here you see why It took a full 3 mos to a year or more to record an album back then...not that cookie cutter chit we have today #original..& not even with a pop stopper on the mic or anything
my stepdaddy is reggie buchanan from grandraidps michigan
i have family in grandpids michigan the buchanans
Great video. Truly an amazing thing to watch musical greats at work.
Thanks for the great video, Bobby!
@lanier2 We are not only more divided as a nation as you see Lanier2--but generationally and culturally related to our true identity in the hood and as a people! I agree with you totally. Our black top 40 has become a caricature of who we truly are and the autotune as a gimmick not a creative tool has so slowed down our progress to take this nation to the next level on the funk. Funk in it's true afro/space purity is EXTREMELY rare today...
@derrickkdavis63 I first met him in Chicago in '72 at the High Chapparrell with the famous Pedro Bell...I vaguely even knew who they were at this time and they blew the minds and wigs of that standard R&B audience that were used to more Apollo theatre type of performances...Lots of highlights, but your pops, Bootsy, Catfish, anf Tyrone Lampkins were especially OUTSTANDING!
What a voice...
sweet...RIP Troutmans
Great video, The master Roger at work.. how cool...
GQ
my thought exactly!
AMAZING!!!!
wasn’t expecting to see this, inspiring watching one of my favorite artists on that grind! #LEGEND
Rip LEGEND
WOOOOOOW! this is inspiring Im about to go up in the studio right now..this is all i needed. Man I love this!!!! ROger was the best man!!!
Dayuuuuuuuum!!! This is truly an inspiration! Thanks for posting this man!!
@derrickkdavis63 I later several shows later saw your pops again at the Omni in Atlanta and as a guitarist asked him what happen to Harold Beane who used to dress up as Captain America and he told this hilarious story that Harold was Captain America for real having become a policeman. His command of all styles of music including R&B/Gospel thru opera--and I know Larry Graham as well!
holy crap you worked with these? LUCKY!
@mo314mo314 Ray sang with Parliament/funkadelic through the 70's too.. look up their live stuff and u'll see'em
Rodger is the Man
Basically I look at this as a free vocal lesson from Roger Troutman!!! This is kinda helpful if you sing along to his instructions
wow so interesting to see how these guys work!
Yo, this dude was a beast in that studio. I say he got Prince beat not over all as a master musician of course not but Roger was on the wave and levels of a hip hop dj producer cat like Doctor Dre. Now, before anybody misunderstands, Prince was the master and the greatest. But dude was a bit of a control freak and made a bunch of shit that made no sense like Love sexy. See? Prince had so much talent that he ain't know what to do with his self.
He didn't want to give Warner Brothers no more of his real music when he saw he couldn't put out the black album
@sfcub69 I met Prince before and also saw that famous performance at the Beverly Theatre with James Brown headlining calling up both Michael and Prince. If Roger were there (Prince didn't do so well on stage not being in his usual tightly controlled musical environment) Michael was funky and fabulous already being so familiar with Jame's band and material--I personally believe musically--Roger would have stole the show from everybody that night!
@Timmyfunk1 Hopefully rather than keeping them as museum memories in our own way thru Life and our musical productions we can help carry that banner to the very chaotic world we live in today to help bring people together! I agree with you completely!
wow............
