- See my Kareem Tribute Video: I'm So Happy to hear the finished song.
January 1989
Recording session for "I'm So Happy"
NBA Entertainment and Warner Bros. selected Roger to perform the song that I wrote for Kareem Abdul Jabbar's Music Video tribute. This was the third and final NBA music video tribute that I made. I started a fourth project, one for Majic Johnson but that project never saw completion.
I hope you enjoy this behind the scenes footage of Roger.

Imagine if Roger was still around to use today's technology.... he'd be pumping out a new record every 5 days.
he'd be on that 24k magic by bruno mars for sure.
Roger is absolutely fascinating when I recorded this song with him in Dayton Ohio studio I am lobbying to try to get him into the rock 'n' roll Hall of Fame.
In my opinion Prince is secondary to lRoger.
Yesss
He'd probably be disappointed in the way these clowns do music now
The more I watch this stuff I realize how under-rated Roger is. I put him up there with Prince's and Rick James' best stuff. If only everyone could have Prince's longevity.
Prince was cut short as well, what a shame
@@coupelikeacaravan Prince cut himself short. Big difference.

That is The Official Story: viz, not necessarily The Actual Story.
They all were on tour with each other back in the day. After all that is Roger Troutman playing on Michael Jackson Bad album. Speed Demon etc.
Man, how I miss those days & nights w/ Roger , Shirley & Zapp in the studio. I use to pick Roger up and take him to the studio a many of nights working all night long long. Dam, I miss those days and Roger Love u BIG BROTHER. The Wag's
God bless you. Roger was everything to us who adored his incredible music.
OMG I AM 36 YEARS OLD AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE ROGER ZAPP....MY FAVORITE SONG THAT I LISTEN TO IS LET ME SEE YOU MOVE IT ON THE DANCE FLOOR BABY !!!! ZAPP JUST HAD A CONCERT IN HOUSTON TX. WHERE I LIVE AND THE SPOKE ABOUT ROGER AND LARRY !!!!! THIS MAN MUSIC STILL GIVE ME CHILLS AND I HAVE WON A MANY DANCE CONTESTS OFF HIS MUSIC WITH MY YOUNG ASS !!!! 💯💯😂 MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU ACTUALLY HAD A CHANCE TO KNOW THIS MAN WOW !!!! I AM HONORED TO EVEN TALK TO YOU. Charles Wagner
How much you get paid was their any tension between the group who Shirley Murdock sleeping with
@@kingsports1113 what? Who was Shirley sleeping with?
@@Ladysugarshaft facts tell me
One thing is for sure..Roger was focused as all hell in the studio. He was really locked into his craft.
what a heartbreaking loss. dude was so talented
when i lose roger iwent into an bad depresseingpeggathee
The fact that he was able to engineer his own session, recording onto DAT tapes is amazing to me.
Looks like two 2" inch Struder multitrack tape units to me. 24 Tracks each. Big boy shit.
+Christopher Moody lol.. exactly. and the analog warmth missing in most of today's music! at least that's my take on it without trying to get into the dreaded "myth" debates.. lol
That's how Im gonna do it
For context how difficult is this?
M T to some it’s natural to others hard
Name one artist now that shows upto a recording studio in a slick suit and tie....
+B15SDMDESIGNS He came to WORK!
They told him he was gonna be on TV that day, and he actually gave a damn! 😂😂
And engineers HIMSELF.
Truuuuth
He did it all of the time! He was usually doing an interview before or flying in to do a session, then going across the street to check on the band rehearsing. Him and his brothers were almost always in suits on a daily basis!
What an absolute treasure. It's not often that you get to see the nuts and bolts of songwriting. Rodger was beast in the studio. Most cats would build a recording studios thier homes, Rodger built an apartment in his recording studio! Thats dedication.
He needs his own movie
Man Seeing roger navigate in the studio is tight, backing up punching in on the studer analog a800 24 track tape machine is a big task, befor pro-tools, sounds better and fatter than digital, plus operating that minimoog model d with the talk box is a joy. My ultimate favorit synth and own 2. i had the pleasure knowing him, he toured with my father in the 70,80,90s.Very down to earth. Much love roger
Engineer and a good D*M musician.
Do you know what type of microphone that is that he is using? I want to get something similar for my talk box
Looks like AKG 414 @@mentosaj6777
Oh man! I like that he's not on some 'nah, can't be showing my methods for my sound.." type stuff. Working! The gear, the process... In a suit! LOL!!! Legendary.
Joshua Lathan Sr. Larry shot Roger in the chest and then committed suicide.
Dude, with a suit, too boot…
the video where he was working with young tech n9ne out of a shitty home studio and he was so down and into it is amazing
ua-cam.com/video/t-_vjKcJsMQ/v-deo.html
Rodger was always decked out and looking fly
Musical Genius, and perfectionist Rodger knew his stuff. Barnone..no one could touch him bad dude..I wish he was still here. Gone too soon!!! miss and love you Rodger..rest easy!!! Definitely missed..
Betty Thompson i've been trying to get Roger into the "rock 'n' roll Hall of Fame".i've been in the music business since 1960s and rate Roger One of the top musicians in a world
he was so handsome
2:38
That makes me have an inner peace with myself, it's absolutely beautiful.
We love you, Roger!
One of the most innovative producers to date...very little musicianship in what they do today
YUUUUP!
When you late to your own concert but you wanna produce a song before you get on stage...

If he was still around today, imagine how many songs he would've produced and how many people would want for him to be featured in their songs...! RIP for both brothers.
PRINCE HAD TO PUT HIM ON THE CONTROVERSY TOUR BECAUSE GENIUS RECOGNIZE GENIUS
Mark of a great producer. Never settle, perfection or bust.
This is good to see how a legend work in the studio much love Roger and thanks for helping to put Dayton Ohio on the map.
This was how yesterday inspires today's music...Great stuff for tomorrow's generation too!
"and I'll keep sky hooking just for you" damn that's stuck in my head lol
Stevie Wonder introduced the talk box, But Roger truley mastered it. Great, Great, Musician!!.
Stevie Wonder??? Look up Pete Drake :)
@@ParlanceOpusNah, look up Stevie Wonder's Music of my mind... You'll get it.
@@DJDumter Yeah I know Stevie Wonder! That was 1972 - My point is he was far from the first, Pete Drake had a gold record 'Forever' featuring the Talk Box in 1964! It's awesome, check it out :)
i know i'm just a 21year old young buck, but i grew up on Zapp & Roger troutmans music. i luv computer love and many more hits. it's been ten years since his death. i miss roger troutman. there was so much more for him to in the music business. Rest In Peace bro.
Aww awesome work from a unsung musical scientist, working overtime in his laboratory ..you will be missed mr.trouman..!!!!
I Am Gonna Be Working Just As Hard As He Did When He Was Around... R.I.P. Roger!!!! The Talkbox Legend!!! 🎵🎧🎶🎙🎤🎹🎸
Please… please… do not look past the fact that this man has on full concert attire to record parts in the studios. #weSTAYinshowmode
I sure miss the 70's and 80's. Real musicians and real talent. The music was so great, a new generation was able to recycle it and still make hit records with it.
Peter Frampton , Stevie Wonder , Teddy Riley all mastered the talkbox , but like someone said NOONE did it as clear as Roger , Terry and his nephew are about as close as you can get , Johnny Gill once said when in the studio with Rog every take was like a mini concert , he never let his crowd get bored , my all time favorite performer ,
rastaman1017 don’t forget DJ Quik and Roger’s nephew Rufus
@@MattyBsouL quik is probably the 1 next to roger. quik even recalled roger telling him he was his fave.
You will forever be missed. A class act and show stopper. ❤️
I am from Dayton Ohio and I am a big Roger Troutman fan!!!
Roger really wore a suit everyday! Dayton Ohio style.
my depressing is real bad
Roger was another musical genius and it's sad that so many talented souls are no longer with us.
Wow, he really understood computers that created music. My mind is blown by his genius mind.
He’s operating a tape machine and a synth, not a computer.
@@SPAZZOID100 ok, thank you
Met Roger after a show he was very nice.
RIP ROGER & ROGER II
Yes
He was absolutely the best! 2 Times I had the luck to see a concert live in Germany and talk to him.. Unforgettable 🙌😎
I wish he was still alive... I would have loved for him to produce my album... I see he's using a classic AKG Mic, and he really knows how to operate in the studio... Genius!
I love Roger...truly a genius when it came to the talkbox. He knew how to work the equipment and how to experiment with it and on top of well funky produced beats...Roger was truly on another level.
Extremely Multi Talented! Love and miss you everyday!💋💋💋
here you can see roger is just the king ... he doesn´t care much about his talkbox sound ... roger´s characteristic playing technique and mouthtechnique made him unique ... and not how the most of the talkbox player around the world you all just want to sound like him but can´t play keyboards and don´t feel the harmonies
roger really gets down in the studio, i can see why quik loved him.
Everyday Swag! Always decked out in a suit.
RIP Roger 💋
I know a lot of Jheri Curl juice was drippin in the studio that night, lol!
This is amazing to witness such unbelievable talent and charisma possessed by one human being..Roger Troutman was truly a musical genius and it displayed briefly here for all to bear witness to..
My long life all time favorite! i love Roger &Zapp!!! Rest easy baby...
He was a very good singer too
Yep Roger used the Minimoog for a good portion of his career, although he used the DX100 in the last several years before his passing, I don't think he ever shied away from the Minimoog Analog synth
Prince must of been somewhat intimidated when he realized how good of a musician 🎸🎼🎹😱 Roger truly was
He remind me alot of prince they are both insanely talented 💜
Both of then light skin
yes, I would like to see a rockumentary about the Troutman's paving the talkbox funk movement and the tragic end
pray for the troutman family
Ohio has so many talented people ...mercy.
Genius. Gets the details right!
Cain and Abel
0:49 bro lookin' at Roger like: "BRUH! get it right!"😂😂😂😂
And I’ll be Sky Hookin just for you…Rip
MR. ROGER TROUTMAN…. Thank you
waw his so perfectionist just for one phrase awesome !!!
THE OHIO OG!!! RIP ROGER!!!
A true master music producer working his magic! This late legend doesn't get enough credit for being one of the pioneers. RIP Roger Troutman;(
Nice to see the Master slaving over a song!!! Shows the dedication, heart and soul that went into every song!!!!
Thanks for the video. It's fun to watch Roger create, not a lot of videos like this out there. What a professional.
Perfectionist he was
its a shame how people try to copy his style and fail these days and how this much effort is not even thought of being put into the music these days
Best dressed men in music.👍😍
i like how much dedication he put in his music
Nothing sounds like the OG MINIMOOG D.
He reminds me so much of prince
golden throat talkbox and mini moog
no he was using a peavey mid-range driver instead of the golden throat talkbox....look at the video closely and you will see it.
@Goyokiki Its NOT a Vocoder or Auto Tune (which in a sense are alot alike) Nothing but a microphone and a voice...
Roger was the master of the "Talk Box" ... which as you can see here has a tube that goes into your mouth and when spoke into is the pitch of the sound that comes out is controlled by the keys on the keyboard
Fire🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This is so beautiful.. Art at its finest.
Roger was roasting his homie for looking ugly while chewing gum. He knew they were being recorded 😂😂😂😂
Thanks for great memories.
I still love Roger; Sky looking and dance
Thats so true my friend! Well said! This video just how serious and professional Roger was about his music!!
Thanks for putting this up...
It made me even wanna cry...
Roger Troutman forever!
This is video is off da chain!! Roger does it up on the talkbox. NBA style!!
look how retro that equipment is.. i love it!
thank you for posting this. such amazing look into the production side of roger, which was just as focused/frantic/fantastic as i had assumed. what a huge talent. miss u rog!
Fuck I love roger
This is great footage of Roger in action at his sound lab studios in Dayton... all you talkboxers wanna-bes watch and learn from the one and only Roger Troutman... the man was a musical genius. If you notice Rog's talk box its the same thing I build so get at me if you want one.
Thanks for posting this nice footage, HollywoodVisual!!!
Mister Groove!
Do you know what type of microphone that is that he is using? I want to get something similar for my talk box
Mentos AJ I believe its an AKG condenser microphone model C214
Mister Groove I was thinking the AKG family too I didn’t know they were around back then though. Not the c414 tho you think the c214?
Mentos AJ yeah it sure looks like the c214 model
Only real artist knows why he keeps repeating "and i'll."
& U kno dis Mannnnn .....I digg it & I'll & I'll ...... & I'lllllll.... Keep 🌌L👀K'n juh 4 u...!! Haaaaa
Spill the beans.
Doubling
And Dial, And Dial
He is rehearsing between takes
Rest Well Roger a job well done.
Watching the MASTER at work...
saw him perform this in worthing in i think 93! a truly great man whos touched the hearts of many
Thanks for sharing this with us. Roger is truly missed.
thanks for sharing this footage with the world! it was so fun to watch Roger at work
Master at work!
Roger has been a big influence on me and no one can reproduce the sound and effects he has made on the vocoder he was a true pioner
The man in action!! This is a great video of Roger.. PEACE
GQ
I wish I could tell you how many hours I've spent trying to figure out how he put those records together. When I started making making beats I pretty much subconsciously used that famous Rodger synthesized bass in lots of my tracks. I'll give you a link to one of them. Thanks for sharing that experience.
This is amazing
I've watched this at least twenty times along with the other part feat Ray Davis's (RIP) vocal part. It's like watching paint dry to produce a record but oh when the finished product is done. Wow!
The name of the song is-im so happy
2:36 🥹🥹🥹 that was so beautiful 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿
thank you for this!!!
@owlwink, if your talking about what he recorded on,, it was all done on the 2" 24 track tape machine (Studer A800). Nothing but punch in, way before Bro-Tools (pro tools). I love his beat up minimoog!!!!!
AMAZING!!!!
