Ofc if you have a Vita there is no reason to play the PSP, but when the PSP was released it was the most advanced handheld, with one of the best libraries. There is a lot to love in the og PSP
The psp was ahead of its times, it was like having a handheld computer. You play games, web browse, music, photos, and movies. Aside from the games, it was the fact that it was a multimedia device that you could bring anywhere. I think that’s where most of its success came from
Prinny 1 and 2, Patapon 1-3, The Third Birthday (square enix action rpg cover shooter sequel to Parasite Eve), Space Invaders Extreme, Wipeout Pure, Patchwork Heroes, and the Crazy Taxi collection are my favorite psp games to play. Since the psp can also play every ps1 game that doesn’t require the DualShock, I also play a lot of Crash 1-3, Spyro 1-3, ps1 racing games like Ridge Racer Type 4 and some of the rally games, Klonoa, Ghost in the Shell (which is an awesome game btw), SkullMonkeys, Rayman 1 and 2, and Mega Man Legends.
I like the PSP 1000, heavier with contouring to fit the hand. Easily serviceable with replacement/upgradeable parts still for sale. Modding takes minutes and allows you to rip backups of your games. The UMDs will last theoretically forever if kept dry. DS, 3DS, Vita and switch cartridges need charges to keep memory stable but will eventually become corrupted if charged. The PSP also has a great library of games that are not still available for purchase on the PS Vita. Some great PSP games include Lumines 1&2, Loco Roco 1&2, Patapon games, whipeout, midnight club, Gran Turismo, Dexter, Castlevania Chronicles, Killzone Liberation, Ys Games, FF7 Crisis Core, a bunch of star wars games, etc.
In its prime, it was great. Looking back, its a bit rough - but if you dont see how great it is that PlayStation took a leap into the portable space with the PSP ( it had soul and a huge library of actually good games) idk what to tell you
Personally, I love playing PSP in the original hardware. It's an experience thing. It's a spectacle to see games like that in a 2004 machine. A fully modded PSP with maybe a new battery (I suggest the Cameron sino battery) it's a godsend for gaming. The price is good too, a PSP is not an expensive thing if you can't afford a Vita. I have both consoles and I still use PSP for its games, I appreciate games as they were designed in their system. I'm not a great fan of Vita's PSP emulation although it's great to play it like that too. If I would got stuck with only one console, I wouldn't mind the PSP library: very PS2-like with genres for all likings, portable mindset combined with console gaming spectacle and innovative game design/creative optimizing. What a pair of consoles.
I think at the time it was the closest to console feeling. Games did get ported to the ps2 at the time. With the game roster by the end of the console. It really had some cool games.
I like that someone else puts the PSP UMD in backwards every single time with how little they play games on it As far as games, Work Time Fun (WTF), Patapon, Loco Roco, and KH Birth By Sleep were the core games I remember playing, but most of its library are available elsewhere nowadays
Try to hold it like a phone in landscape mode palms not actually resting on the handheld, instead index fingers wraping around just enough to press the shoulder buttons. I started collecting psps for their unique umd media format, first of I love mechanical stuff and second no other portable device uses optical dics as its main form of media (besides discman or camcorders that also use bulky dvds for storage). I don't have them for nostalgia I intended to, but unfortunately because of my vita they have become obsolete, but they still have that compact charm.
Crazy Taxi Fare Wars is the only place that Crazy Taxi 2 has been ported to after the Dreamcast release so that may be worth looking into. I also adore the Hatsune Miku Project Diva games, the PSP ones are far more simple than the later releases and I kinda love that simplicity in them. There's also the K On game for any rhythm game fan, but that's also on PS3. It's surprisingly one of my favorite rhythm games ever, it's so fun.
I remember using PSP with some book reader app, ps1 emulation was handy and there were some interesting Japan only games like Super Robot Wars Z2 Also, interestingly enough, I've managed to beat Armored Core Last Raven on PSP while having no such luck with PS2 version before
The grip is really uncomfortable though, and the analog stick is kinda horrible, I remember disassembling and servicing it myself twice or thrice (that at least isn't very hard to pull off)
The PSP has an incredible library of games, and some can only be experienced on the PSP. Not to mention that the PSP was practically a handheld PS2 and was a power house. The only drawbacks to the PSP was the UMD format, and the lack of a second analog stick, other than that I loved playing on my PSP and PSP GO. Here’s some of my favorite games GOW 1&2 Megaman Maverick Hunter X Megaman Powered UP Castlevania Dracula X Ghosts n’ Goblins Patapon series(1-3) Loco Roco(midnight Carnival is my favorite) Echoshift/Echochrome Gradius Collection R-Type Tactics/Command There’s so many to check out but overall it has one of the best library of handheld games next to the DS library.
Admittedly, as I was a 20 something year old man, with big man hands, I accidentally popped off the PSP thumb stick when it snagged on a bag string (it just pops out actually), and I had a better time using the naked thumb nub neck, granted I learned to control not pressing my thumb on it too hard (since it would give you a literal sore thumb after a while). Secondly, I said to myself "Boy, I sure did get a bunch of PSP games," only to realize how full of crap I was, since I was very bad for bootlegging the hell out of the games, weekly, thanks to lime wire. I normally only bootleg the hell out of outdated and forgotten consoles, but I purchased a jailbraker memory card and hacked battery from china, on Ebay, and homebrewed the hell out of the PSP. I played hundred of PSP games on my PSP 1001, but had to purchase a psp 3000 (well, it was brand new for 50 bucks at a K-mart somewhere, so I just had to get that) for a few official Gundam game imports that i couldn't be bothered waiting for a firmware cracked version of..I also played Game boy advance and Capcom CPS2 games (mostly the Capcom Vs games) to a high degree! Also I had the HD movie converter to help me to play any obtained (or stolen off Limewire, I have no damn shame for that since, college (Tuition and Books as I worked two jobs) + Rent + Car + General Survival made me Broke AF still, so say whatever, LOL) movies I had. I remember I pirated the "Final Fantasy VII Advent children" movie, and that was the Very first movie I watched on my PSP 1001!
Use a little gun oil on a gear in the umd slot, and it'll get rid of that grinding noise. There are some great videos to look at, and you dont even have to take the system apart.
I only have a psp because I took my dad's when he passed away. It needs a new battery and I've been meaning to mod it but I just don't have enough interest in it. I remember loco roco being fun though
@@aiodensghost8645 YES! the good old times! i remember well when i had to travel by bicycle with my old PSP in my jacket en short cabled earplugs in. it was an awesome time!
Wait you can play games on this thing? I've just been using it with the AV Cable to watch UMD Videos on my TV. Easily one of the best ways to watch all 8 Harry Potter Films, Family Guy Season 1 & of course can't forget an absolute favourite of Wedding Crashers. Honestly though if you're not a JRPG person I can't tell you anything on the system worth playing.
the psp is already a pretty good device for media and stuff like that and the homebrew scene is huge. other then that is that the psp's library is super vast. sure you have your rachet and clanks and popular games like that there is STILL a lot of very good psp games that are super obscure that i rarely see people talk about. i got super into the psp because of puzzle games that the psp has a super good line up of. i got really into Lumines 1 and 2, Gunpey, Puzzle Guzzle, koolmn, crush, echoshift and a lot more!. i also got dragged into it with games like patapon games every extend extra, crazy taxi, n+, vibes. most of these games are pretty simple and easy to pick up and play and are very addictive! because of that i always carry a psp around even until now.
The psp is dated now, but it was the best in class handheld at the time as far as tech and specs goes. It was the first handheld I know of that allowed you to play snes and nes games on it other than a crappy pre iphone era cell phone. The psp cam out 4 months after the OG nintendo DS, the screen was beautiful and the nubby stick was the first joystick on a handheld. It was a console centered around 3D games and graphically very impressive. The UMD’s were chosen because cartridges got a bad rep from the n64 days when the same game on playstation 1 came out for n64 and was more money and worse and everyone knew its because the limitations of the cartridge was to blame, so seeing a umd gave you a strong sense of quality, this opinion is kind of lost in time now that technology has advanced so much it isnt the case anymore. The XMB U.I was so good, it was a full media suite with videos you can add to your memory stick, the music player was amazing and this was during the ipod era where mp3’s were all the rage, it had an awesome feature where you could start a section of a song A and stop it at B and if you hit repeat 1 you could just repeat that part of the song over and over. The psp was an all in one media powerhouse with movies, music, games, photos, and was expanded with the modding communities. This all predates the iphone by 2 years.
But if youre looking to enjoy the psp in 2024 you may want to look into the pspGo with a ps3 controller, you also should look into the M2 stick to micro sd card adapter mod so you dont go buying a dumb expensive m2 memory stick to play games.
Your biggest gripe should be the reshell. All 3rd party psp shells feel terrible. I'd rather clean off all the disgusting rubber on the official one and bodge a DIY coating.
Daxter, Chinatown Wars, Dragon Ball Z Shin Budokai: another road, metal gear acid 2, Street fighter Alpha 3 Max, ace combat X, Gran Turismo and Pursuit Force.
about the spinning disks, well it had a large capacity compared to cartridges of that time and sd cards weren't a thing flash memory was expensive and came in really small capacity if u already have a psvita there's no need for a psp that's just stupid like why would anyone who has a ps5 get a ps4 another thing psps are a lot cheaper than psvitas so anyone who doesn't have the budget can get a psp instead
I hate the way psp games look on the vita. They get streched and blurry. I ended up keeping my psp and selling my vita. Even after I bought the vita I wanted, I still kept my psp.
Great video! I like the unscripted ones. :)) I'm not an original console/physical media purist, so I usually play my PSP games on my Steam Deck!! The screen aspect ratio is actually pretty spot on. I know YOU don't like JRPGs... but my game rec is... Persona 3 Portable!! It's a maddeningly fun game with a lottt of depth. The JRPG scene on the PSP is NUTS, so anyone watching this who DOESN'T have a problem with these games, don't sleep on the PSP!! :D yipeeeee...
You're giving a lot of valid arguments to not like psp...like "i dont like psp". And absolute ignorance of the available titles. So the umd drive and disks were not the best option, and the mem cards were expensive... other than that, you dont provide any good reason to avoid the psp. Comparing it to the next gen vita or latest gen switch are just not acceptable terms.
Bro likes collecting physical games but hates discs? Wait until he finds out about how many consoles use them 😂 But in all seriousness, the PSP is definitely the most underwhelming out of all the handhelds I've ever owned but that's mostly due to the game library not interesting me much. I like certain aspects of it, but it's not worth picking up another one when I still have a Vita that can play both libraries just fine
i hate people who talk through their hand expression so i cant really sit around and pretend to enjoy your video especially with the nonstop jumpcuts but you made almost 0 valid complaints despite saying yourself that the entirety of this video is just complaining about the psp. you said it has a UMD disc drive and that sucks. I agree entirely. takes you 5 minutes to finally make a real complaint that it is not comfortable to hold. the amount of swinging your vita around is obnoxious. we don't need to see your expression through your hands because you have none.
God damn the bias in this video. I hate nintendo fans and I have all the nintendo handhelds. First, this is a psp, don't compare it to switch and vita. Second, disks are a wildly good options because they can store a lot more than what was generally possible at the time. Just look at the night and day difference between ds and psp graphics and overall quality. Most of the DS library is worthless shovelware. Additionally, the disks are actually more durable, nowadays there has been some drama surrounding games (especially pokemon cartridges for the ds) that have been falling apart and stopped working. The disks are all still perfectly fine and can also be easily serviced. The disk is also not that loud, your psp is certainly broken or not properly lubricated. As for comfort, I believe you. I personally find it very comfortable. I am as well a 6ft man but I definitely have found a way for it to be very comfortable for me. None of the people that have psps (5) have complained either. Emulation wise, you can natively play ps1 games as well. It is actually better in emulating consoles up to sega and snes than the ps vita and 3ds. For game recommendation you need to try the native experience of metal gear portable ops (+) and peace walker, as they have certain recruitment features that are only available for the psp. There are also some AR games, but that requires a camera. The 3rd Birthday is also an amazing experience as long as you don't pair it too much with parasite eve. Black Rock Shooter is another pretty interesting game stuck on the console. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is arguably the best old school monster hunter game and it has been a pretty good console seller in japan. Manhunt is also a thrilling experience although I am not sure if it did eventually get ported elsewhere. Final Fantasy Dissidia is also a very fun fighting game Assassins Creed Bloodlines is a short but well made game. It takes some getting used to though. Phantasy Star Online 2 Infinity is one of the best phantasy stars and I believe it is still stuck on the system as well. There are also hundreds of amazing homebrews for it that you could try out. Some wild games and ports made by a fanbase that is still really active. It has arguably the best port of Angband and ToME out of any handheld system. Also compared to the DS, this system feels like it was made in a different universe. Internet browser with which I was able to watch youtube as a kid, talk to my friends via skype and play with people actually online. Yeah its old but thats like shitting on HL's graphics and that the physics are shit compared to games nowadays. Also out of everything that I have owned, the psp is like the nokia of handhelds. This thing takes quite a beating. Last thing, you can always just mod it and download the iso files so you dont have to hear the disk noises, the thing had an online game store but its definitely not working anymore.
I feel ya. After trying and trying to enjoy games on the system I just leave it on my shelf. I think that if you grew up with it back in the day it would have that nostalgia factor at and be more enjoyable. But I had a DS and a 3DS etc. So it makes a lot of sense what you're saying. Most of the good games like God of war, Tony hawk, honestly, I can't think of much else.. The library is extremely weak in my opinion. And you can play much better looking and playing versions on the PS3 or even PS2. I do think it is really cool when ahead of its time though, so it's just a collector's piece in my opinion.
To me the PSP is more of a handheld bringing in the nostalgia factor. I still regret not buying one back in 2010 when I was in Japan as I was told they are region locked.. I did acquire a 2000-series model 3-4 years ago and was so happy! Went through all the CW mods and tried all the games that came with it.. It was exciting but also fairly disappointing.. Playing Prince of Persia was a HUGE pain due to the camera angles and having only one stick.. Playing something like FIFA was slightly better as the D-Pad is not used as much.. By far the only games I found comfortable playing on it was Virtua Tennis 3 and NFS Most Wanted, however if you play more than 1-2 hours at a time your hands are stuck in this very weird claw position and it does hurt.. at least for me.. All that being said the PSP was great value for what it was... Back at a time when mp3 and mp4 players were super popular, you could get it and it would play your music, play your movies/videos, you could play a decent amount of games and even connect to the internet and talk to people online, not to mention it was possible to read comics on it. So it was basically an iPod with the ability of playing games for a lower price.. So despite loving the device.. I do realize it is due to nostalgia.. the time of it has definitely passed and I do agree that with all Jake said.
You could easily do that on an android phone. But in the context of the video, he showed he already has a Vita, which can play both those libraries and more.
I always wanted one. I'll get it one day . I mean, look, the games are kinda hard to find all right, maybe a whole hell harder 😅 to find, but for what it's worth it is still nice to have around for those who really do ❤️ it. Personally, im in favor of the Nintendo switch lite . It's the shit 🤩🫠
Ofc if you have a Vita there is no reason to play the PSP, but when the PSP was released it was the most advanced handheld, with one of the best libraries. There is a lot to love in the og PSP
Yup it was basically a mini ps3 with all the features music, videos, movies, browsing, online, etc.

Final Fantasy Dissidia is also a very fun fighting game
Assassins Creed Bloodlines is a short but well made game.
PSP has a lot of great games/hidden gems
if you dont like having every ps1 game on the go without even mentioning the entire psp library as well then you are just fundamentally broken
