  • FMS Futura 64 mm Unbox, Build and Fly
In this video I will take the FMS Futura 64 mm electric ducted fan jet and unbox, build and fly the RC model airplane.
Please see below for special offer on purchase of the Futura:
    www.fmshobby.com/products/fms...
The FMS Futura is a neat EDF jet that is easy to put together and fly. The plane is very light at around 2 pounds, this the 64 mm fan provides plenty of power.
You will need to supply a transmitter, a six channel receiver, 4 cell lipo battery and a remote ID module if you are not flying in an FAA Recognized Identification area. No glue is required for kit assembly and the model goes together in 30 minutes.
The Futura handles very well in the air. I had the recommended throws. The only change I will make is to reduce the elevator throw a bit, as the bank was too sensitive. Other than that no changes needed.
The flaps are very effective for landing, they truly slow the jet down for this phase of flight. You can also add reverse thrust to an open channel and use the reverse thrust to shorten your landing rollout.
Here is my video on how to set up reverse thrust on the Futura:

Keep the speed up in the corners and do not chop the throttle at the top of a loop or an inverted dive as the wings will rock and it will drop a wing. I fly it half throttle and above and stay in the throttle a bit on the loops, inverted dives and other acros. Great jet. Nose gear pin is the weakness on this jet, rollout into the grass will bend it back. If it bends be careful bending it back. I ordered a few extras so if it gets weak I can just cut the bent end off pull it up through the hole and replace it with a new one. Great jet and value! :) The Freewing Banshee is honestly a bit nicer more refined and more stabile and forgiving, but both are great especially at the price point.

@@TimMcKay56 Interestingly enough the FMS Futura 80mm displays the same characteristics in regards to dropping a wing or tip stalling... I've had a few close calls with that one and it definitely makes me a bit nervous when flying it!

Nice plane Tim. You could take out a bit of movement of the ailerons. I would dial in about 30% expo it softens normal flight but you have a bit extra if turbulence hit and also more for aerobatics

Reverse can just be plugged into the battery port, it won't waste a channel. It will get assigned to aux2

Power on during landing. You dropped in like a rock. Lol Not a rubber band power tissue plane Tim! Maybe it was that RID module that made you heavier. Oh wait you fly from a FRIA!

Roger dodger. I was so impressed with the effect of full flaps I developed a sink rate. Spring gear worked well! Tim

Nice video Tim! Thanks for showing many details. I would have loved a bit longer video, information about your flight time and battery pack. But that´s one couldn´t experiment for himself. I´ll fly mine from grass so I´m a bit curious how it works. It will be probably my first jet flight also. I have a second hand FMS Avanti V1 70mm but due to weather I haven´t been able to maiden her.

I normally program triple rates and use high or low rates. On the Avanti in the manual it´s recommended to use highs for take off. I´ll see how it goes. Probably first flights and landings on low rates. And while I get used to her and get a bit crazy change to high rates.

Thanks so much for checking in! I did my first flight for around 3 mins with a 4,000 milliamp pack. I did not use a lot of full throttle, and check the battery charge remaining with a battery checker. This way I have an idea how long I can go. Full flaps are a must for landing and the jet handles very well. Good luck with your flights! Tim

Wow@@TimMcKay56 ! A big pack but as I have heard it handles very good bigger packs too. I´ll try 2200, 2300 and 3300, which I already have. And some 1550 4SHV maybe too. They weight the same as my 2200. Thank you for answering! Cool your wife works with you on your videos, and your dog :))

Last week, after a long wait, I bought 2 of these from Turbines-RC, one for my son and one for myself as we like to fly in formation. Unfortunately both models suffered from ESC malfunction. After less than 2 minutes of flying the ESC goes into emergency mode, leaving just the servos working for an emergency landing. The cause is that the ESC is 40Amp while the motor draws 48Amp. We are very very disappointed considering the fact that for a 64mm EDF is very expensive, being more than Eur 80 dearer than the Motion RC Banshee. This also leaves me thinking that FMS does not test their electronics. Sadly I DO NOT recommend this model.
