"Art in the sky": Why airlines obsess over the paint jobs on their planes

- After nearly a decade, United Airlines decided it was time for a change. This week, the company updated what's known as its "livery" - the paint job on the outside of the plane. That comes as a growing number of airliners are decked out in colors meant to stand out from the rest. Kris Van Cleave reports.

This is literally the same design!!! 😂😂😂😂😭🤣🤣🤣😂😂
Bryan Santamaria totally
Bryan Santamaria exactly
Am I diluasional here? What is so special about this new United livery? It looks practically the same as before. May I say it is boring?
Try to compete with Emirates airlines. On the other hand, some paint jobs looked good the Southwest planes. At least they look fun.
I would think the reason why they made this video is to bring awareness to the United livery change as United serves the most passenger destinations of any airline so it would confuse passengers if they suddenly changed their look.
"Uniting the world"
Our knees are so close to the seat in front. We've been united
Oh god, changing color hues on United is almost nothing new. Big hype small change
Bring back the grey
Actually the new look is better it shows what a proper merger of United and continental should have looked like
LOL Wow gold to blue? So much thinking! LOL looks the same you clowns.
United Airlines New Blue Look isn't too bad but I prefer the Gold on the Logo instead.
Karlos Sargeant
Yeah, the old tail was better.
Same
i like both globes equally tbh! as long as it isn't the tulip they had before the 2010 merger than I am good
I was a frequent flyer on Continental. For 15 years I flew them and them alone. They were the best from my experience. I never had a late flight (a couple times we got in early - if impending bad weather was approaching the departure city the pilots would clear airspace the second everyone was accounted for they'd get everyone to sit down, buckle up, and take off fast!), never lost my luggage, and always friendly and comfortable flights.
Once the merger happened that changed. I quit using them after 2012 and now tend to fly SWA when I can if they're available. Otherwise I reluctantly go with whomever I can. But I will always miss the old Continental.
who here thinks that the American Airlines old livery is the best
Absolutely agree, I loved the polished aluminum and the Vignelli logo. Probably surpassed as an icon (in the U.S. anyways) only by Pan Am, maybe BOAC's speedbird.
Hard to accomplish with composite aircraft though.
while I think the current picture is the best, the AA logo I thought was pretty cool and I do miss it to a degree.
Southwest easily has the most recognizeable livery.
Oh Yeah. When People Blur It Out (For Ether Copyright Or they work for them) its like “yeah, that’s definitely SWA”
Y'all should see Air New Zealand's *all black* plane and ANA's (Japan) Star Wars planes and flying turtles. United looks like a low-cost EU airline in comparison.
2:18 Did you even look at that?
Please don't sully the name of Europe's low cost airlines by comparing them to United.
One the 777-300ER
OMG. I remember PSA and AirCal. But Frontier Airlines has or has the most beautiful looking planes with those animals paintings.
I am a little disappointed that nobody mentioned Frontier. Those animals on the tail are characters in their TV ads and they're THE marketing icons for the airline.
I think they have the most livery’s to be exact.
I like the 60's United paint job best...
You want to see art in the skies go to the Braniff pages and look at the airline that started it all in the '70's.
That is a terrible livery. New Zealand has a pretty slick livery
IndiaNDS i actually just saw a New Zealand plane the other night. It was Black & White, very bad @$$
They should do a competition where people from around the world o whover wants to participate can submite their livery ideas and post them online so that people can vote and the winner gets a prize. That way, it was the majority of people who chose it and cannot complain about it.
ANA did that for their livery on their new A380 giving the winner a free roundtrip business class ticket between Tokyo and Honolulu
4:14 no that's not true, some airlines like to repaint aircraft on a more frequent basis to keep the aircraft looking fresh. Other airlines don't want their special liveries to stay for longer then 5 years as well. Finally, some special liveries might just be stickers applied on a plane to be able to be removed after a couple of months..
My favorite was the red, white and blue..I'm 54, my Dad worked for Boeing after the USAF, then was with UAL 49 years. As a kid, I always looked for the red, white & blue..I just showed him this video; he made a very good point..the name UNITED should be in big lettering across the sides. Just my opinion/liking, as its personal with me.
I think they mean uniting people with the floor
TAP is one of the prettiest designs in my opinion
Thats u
I find the livery kind of dull it still screams continental.. maybe it will grow on me in time but as of now i don't like it.. n its too much blue... United hired the smurfs to design the livery
G 4orce look at southwest, instead of the toned down oranges and yellows, and a little bit of blue (could easily spot southwest, only airline in north america with orange in it), it’s now a flying blueberry.
The only U.S. airline to successfully rebrand itself after a merger is Delta. I know that's just my opinion but I believe it's true. While the NWA brand disappeared completely Delta also introduced an all new look that was simple, clean and recognizable. While it doesn't have the panache of Alaska or Hawaiian, it isn't stale like United's latest "update" or inexplicable like American's after it's last merger. It's a recognizable livery for a now global brand.
I was hoping for United to release a dynamic new livery along the lines of Alaska but with the orange, red and blue of it's "rainbow" livery and with an updated globe/tulip hybrid. But as long as the top man is still a Continental veteran, I think United will always favor the Continental globe.
Ryan Wesley , agreed. Delta’s livery after merger is much better than before
yah man deltas logo since 2007 is the best and most accomplished and United's globe logo they got from continental in 2010 is so much better than the tulip from before.
I musty say. That's the most boring paint job ever.
Have you seen China Eastern? They used to have an outstanding paint job (red, gold, and blue stripes). Then some idiot decided it was "better" to strip all that away and just keep the whole plane white. I'd like to know who that idiot was and what he was smoking that day.
Have you never seen Lufthansas new livery?
Have ya seen Aer Lingus's new livery? Talk about a downgrade..
@@speedbird1598 Lufthansa's new livery is great in my opinion
@@Conor3914 Aer Lingus new livery isn't that bad
The new logo symbolize how we drag people out of their seats
I like their gold wavy Dreamliner livery on their 737 max and 787.
Braniff definitely had the craziest colors. The interiors were so extreme that it gave you headaches. Luckily, the barf bag was within reach.
It's basically the same, the shades are just more modern
There is utterly no evolution in their brand or their livery. It is still the old Continental Globe and a boring all white fuselage. All the other legacy carriers completely reimaged their liveries and their brand. My guess is that United just removed the gold and added some new blue. They needed to bring back the tulip
United is already too invested into the current globe branding, it would be too expensive and unnecessary to return to the Tulip although it is wanted by many, so it's very unlikely.
I remember when Oprah Winfrey kicked off her talk show's Farewell Season. At the beginning, she took her crews and studio audience on a trip to Sydney, Australia. They all flew aboard a United Airlines airplane. It was specially painted in a livery to commemorate the Oprah Winfrey Show Farewell Season. That special livery had pastel colors.
Didnt she fly some people on John Travoltas 707 before he gave it back to Quantas
@@thomasdaniels6824 No, that was just a replica brought out onto the stage. If you care to look up Oprah Winfrey United Airlines, you might find what I'm referring to.
It was a nice look, but 10 years later, it still is kind of dated now.
United old planes are better
Edit. They’re new livery is growing on me, a bit
Same exact livery but everything is blue and the font is bigger
SIA's blue & bronze cheat lines are my favourite (I also remember more airlines having such lines in the past than now, for some reason)
So sad these airlines had to go. I love how airlines today bring back the past.
Are they still overselling tickets and kicking passengers out? Yes? Ok, thanks for new colors... NEXT!
They need to go back to the tulip
Because it’s an important part of who they are
United have to reimage because the number one thing people think of United is dragging passenger off the plane after you head butted them. A racist CEO doesn’t help either.
Hi There I would doubt the qualifications of someone that jump to race as well
Perhaps that $100,000 per plane sign job could be better spent just giving passengers lower-cost fairs?
Mayyyybeeee😁😁😄
they have to be repaid every 7 year so they are just repainted then
All I see is a picture of an Asian man being dragged from the seat he paid for.
Then why can’t airlines chose another color other than BLUE. United got rid of the gold chest line and glove. Lufthansa ditched the yellow crane. Both replaced with blue and white.
100k for outside paint and it's still cramped sitting on the inside
Americawest and aircal are so nice. I love those aal liveries
Art in the skies? the liveries are garbage compared to the ones from the 70s-90s. I can't believe that they pay people to come up with some of the most recent ones like Lufthansa, Aer Lingus and now United. they are hardly obsessing, they are going for the cheapest option
Lufthansa's Livery is very sleek, I don't get your point
I like more minimalist liveries. The old-timey paint jobs look weird in an ultramodern airport. That's especially true for international globetrotters.
Look at Lufthansa, LATAM, and even Qantas.
The new tail goes better with United’s mostly blue fuselage from 20 years ago. Bring it back! (Or get rid of the globe! I miss the tulip.)
No, the Picasso or plane painting is Qantas with there planes that feature actual paintings from indigenous Australian artists.
United’s other livery was better. Bring it back! This is so uncreative!
MrAirplanefreak777 sorry I like this one better
1960’s technology, new paint though.
The 737 NGs aren't from the 60s.
bayspotter most people can’t tell apart a Commet or 727 from a modern plane. All look the same and fly at same altitude. How much longer till suborbital flights? Just add a cabin to a bfr like and circle the globe in couple of hours.
Please bring back the Tulip design and its original colors!
You can change the paint job, but doesn't change the bad attitude of the staff and cr*p service on board!
Come on CBS you spelled United Airlines CEO's name wrong it is Munoz with that fun curved line over the n which is a letter in itself in the Castellano alphabet. Without the accent it is misspelled.
American changing from Bare Metal livery to the now livery is better than how united just went from gold to blue
Are they going to stop dragging passengers now? I will never fly United.
You are one of those people who can never move on. This happened over 2 years ago. These types of events happen on all airlines.
www.airliners.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1423159
United is treating customers bad again. New colors but same United. I hate this airline.
So #UA had the GRAND opportunity to stand out above the rest and they came up with this BORING BULL?? 🤮..
THROW AWAY THE WHOLE FLEET
United should change back to the old dark gray livery
Here it goes , next the plane will have ads hanging on side like public bus is doing. Killing the whole enviroment.
Alaska Airlines? I'm surprised they didn't talk about their many unique paint jobs.
Add Frontier with their different tail animals with a corresponding name.
Really miss the old United with the Red and Blue "U" on the tail. I think returning to that logo would have been a better choice than just changing the globe from gold to blue. I have a feeling there is some contractual remnant requiring United to carry forward the Continental globe logo.
Yeah, it's called the Tulip design. And yes, I do agree with you on that one. United, along with AA, had distinctive liveries back in the day and for sure you would recognize them right away. I miss having the airlines serve food even on a short flight, and also having toiletry kits even in Economy. Have you ever been on a Lockheed Tristar-1011? Those were so comfortable.
#ILOVEJETBLUE
After a decade? More like 3
Every other livery did it better but not united
I liked the old livery
“Dragging people off of airplanes” should be painted on it
Alaska airlines has the prettiest planes
How can you have a piece on painting planes and “art in the sky” and not mention Braniff and the Calder jets? Poor research.
Same livery just removed the yellows and painted the engines blue
Is it because United can't be held to the GOLD standard of Continental.
United fails again, ugly and boring livery. Go back to the drawing board United!!
Always thought American Airlines classic polished aluminum/red/white/blue stripes were the coolest looking planes in the sky. They used that livery forever, so I see why they wanted a change, but the new design flat out sucks IMO. Something about the colors and especially that font just don't jive. Especially that font and the color of the text, it really needs to stand out and shout AMERICAN!!
I can't determine if I can pick a favor between the old logo and the new logo but I can tell you.
I hate them both equally.
Why don't they just bring back the logos of anywhere before 2008.
Why don't they bring back the tulip. It was cute.
Brussels Airlines is the best at making special liveries in my opinion! Just look at all 6 of the Belgian Icons!!!!
They basically made it more boring. To be honest, I get kinda scared when airlines have weird paint jobs. I'm looking at you Frontiers.
I thought United was about punching people in the face.
Old livery looks better!
Rip Continental
You have to repaint every few years anyway might as well get some free press out of it
CBS This Morning
Airlines don't obsess over the paint jobs on their planes. But nice try.
I left UAL...a long time ago [employee ] best thing I ever did ! Hydraulic fluid loves new paint...
I'm a model railroader. We use brake fluid to strip paint from plastic shells without hurting them. Works on any paint.
@@douglasskaalrud6865 ...aircraft hydraulic fluid (skydrol) is nasty stuff, also eats plastic.
Sucks. Bring back Battleship gray
I hope they don't get rid of the 2010 golden globe entirely. I mean I like both versions equally whether it is the 2010 one from continental or the 2019 evo blue so having a mix of both is and would be sick. As long as it isn't the tulip from pre 2010 then we are good. I disliked the tulip cause it was old and because it was boring. The globe is better and it makes more sense because it represents the world better since the earth basically is a globe right? The current American since 2013 is better than the AA but the AA was pretty cool to me. I liked it a lot and I do miss it a little but it was surely time or an upgrade and tbh I still kept seeing the AA a lot until 2020 ish on certain aircrafts despite it no longer being used on any of the others so got to live it sort of again till covid.
Phone at 1:30
I hate the new design I loved the other one so much better
Wait they changed something ? 🤔 I thought they were getting ready to unveil the new design lol 😂
100 k per aircraft? United, don’t waste money repainting your planes, instead of that, lower your ticket prices or remove your baggage or seat assignment fees please
they have to be repaid every 7 year so they are gust repainted then
It's not that much different just more blue.
I think the belly needs to be blue..
United Airlines logo looks so basic. The other logo was WAY better! They should’ve kept the gold on the tale but added more detail and made it shiny. That would look gorgeous!
Also I love the unique livery’s of the airlines. Southwest State planes and Frontiers animals on the tale are my favs!
Meanwhile inside, the bathroom floor is sticky with dried up urine. Try obsessing about interior cleanliness!
The way some of these Plaines are painted, I'd be afraid to even step inside of them. It reminds me of a nut house.
Speak about flamboyant colors.
The psychedelic days of the 60s sitting in a room with florescent posters on the wall being fueled by a blacklight would be a better example.
I love it
It’s my OPINON.
Hmmmm....well, Hawaiian Airlines still has the better livery. lol
United breaks guitars ...search on UA-cam
I don't really care how United paints their planes. I ain't flying them.
Ryanair copy...
🇺🇲: Paintjob our livery as it will make us standout.
🇵🇭: Paintjob our livery with PUREGOLD, even bigger than our logo.
😂🤦♂️
Airline with bouncers
I wish they'd used a cooler font than just boring old Ariel.
United has had the worst livery since it inherited it from Continental. Just lazy!
Lose that silly globe
European airlines?
Oh so it looks the same greeeeeat.
🙄
Waste of money
