United excels at avoiding the obvious and easy fix until it escalates. In my case, they wouldn't give me back my first class upgrade certificate after they didn't honor it, and a few well-placed letters later, I had 14 upgrade certificates in my mail. I didn't have to write a song (but I really wish I could).

Baggage handlers just SHATTERED my chair on a Hawaiian Airlines flight, with passengers watching and filming on cell phones, just like this but worse; everyone on the plane heard my chair hit like a car crash under our feet. I informed the flight crew I would be checking out my chair carefully. When I got off the flight (last as always) there were 3 passengers with phones taking video. Backing me up. 🫂🙏 Airline employees were there too, and I had an exact replacement in less than 48hrs, which is excellent for life in Hawaii, where everything moves slowly. I really do think this song changed the world.😂🤣😂🤣🤞
One of our teachers in our class randomly talked about this dude using his power of music to write a complain against the united airlines when his complains were not heard politely. Im really glad my teacher told us about him
I know a lot of musicians and it's not just the cost of the guitar but it's YOUR guitar, the one that you're used to, the one that sounds good etc. Watching people throwing your instrument on the ground and them not caring that they broke it is heart breaking. But he got a lovely revenge.
I'm presently reading the book - not too far into it yet, but already Dave has moved me to tears On a lighter note: who needs Pete Townshend when we have United?
United: Let's see, whose property should I break? A. Military Vet - nah, we'll get beaten up B. Lawyer - Nah, we'll get sued C. Musician - oh yes, the perfect one Musician: *So, you have chosen death*

I just saw an article suggesting that the resulting poor publicity from these videos caused a $180,000,000 drop in share prices. They probably should have just bought the dude a new guitar.
***** The two custom made guitars were given to him by Bob Taylor of Taylor Guitars. When United belatedly offered him $1,200 for repairs and $1,200 for in convenience, he refused to take it and United donated the money to the charity of Dave's choice.
They should have bought him a new guitar because taking reasonable care of customer's belongings in their care is their responsibility. That bit about $180,000,000 drop is a nice way to end a story on a feel-good note, but the conclusion you are supposed to draw from basic stock-market volatility is as misleading as any Hollywood fairytale ending.
United is actually using this video as an example of why you shouldn't go around breaking people's luggage, and why good customer service is important.
12 years later I still think about this song when I am looking at flying and I really don't even consider United Airlines. Lots of other people's experiences don't help the case, but this catchy song going in my brain definitely helps seal the deal.
Delta kills puppies... I remember it was a French Bulldog and they had to put him in the thing.. I don't know the name, no native speaker, this thing over your head where you can put your handbag in to ezc pp.
This video was mentioned in my new job in training! It’s not an airline company, but they were talking how to deal with unsatisfied customers. They mentioned now United puts this video in their training videos for new employees!
In 2005 I took a trip to Alaska with one cheap fly rod and one very expensive fly rod. On the way there they let me carry them on. On the way home they forced me to check them. I wasn’t comfortable with it but finally agreed. When we arrived in Salt Lake my fly rod wasn’t there. They told me they would send it to my house…they finally arrived the next day and both fly rods and hard cases were bent in half. United wouldn’t pay for them but offered a flight voucher which I refused. I now fly for work all the time, I will pay extra to fly Delta over United every time. United also breaks fly rods!!
Anyone watching this video should leave a google review reminding them of this event and reminding them that the public does not forget stuff like this.
This never gets old... It's hard to fathom why United didn't offer the band $100,000 for the rights to this song to get it off the Tube! I sure hope the band gets royalties from the Tube!! 21.7 Millllllion views!!
Delta didn’t get my and gf’s snowboard and gear to Jackson Hole on time. Customer service said “don’t let our failures ruin a day of snowboarding. Go buy and rent whatever we lost.” $1500 bill covered, and then our lost stuff arrived 24 hours later . Delta is more expensive, but you get what you pay for.
I love that you explained to Ms Irlweg that you would be writing three songs, putting them up for anyone to view online, and you did just that! And all these years later, people are still watching those videos, and realizing taking United is a risk, since if there is a problem, United will tell them there is nothing they (United) can do. Well-done, Dave!
When this came out, I was a very frequent flyer. I heard about it on the radio in my rental car on the way to SeaTac and listened to it on my laptop while waiting for my flight. I was laughing so hard other passengers must have thought I was nuts. I got to see them at Milwaukee's Irish Fest a year or two later and really enjoyed them. Love the CDs, too.

After fighting for two years with Air Canada and getting nowhere I stumbled across this video. I love it and the story. ❤
The funniest thing about this is it cost United Airline shareholders 180 million dollars just because they didn't want to replace the guitar

I know a lot of musicians and it's not just the cost of the guitar but it's YOUR guitar, the one that you're used to, the one that sounds good etc. Watching people throwing your instrument on the ground and them not caring that they broke it is heart breaking. But he got a lovely revenge.
Exactly. I have a Taylor, I’ve been playing her for 15 years; it’s irreplaceable.
I'm presently reading the book - not too far into it yet, but already Dave has moved me to tears
On a lighter note: who needs Pete Townshend when we have United?
As a musician, a lot of instruments are hard to get used to if you change them. For the first few months, something always doesn't feel right.
United: Let's see, whose property should I break?

I just saw an article suggesting that the resulting poor publicity from these videos caused a $180,000,000 drop in share prices. They probably should have just bought the dude a new guitar.
they did actually... after they have seen what they've done. they payed for 2 guitars.
The funny thing is, about 4 months after posting this I booked return flights from Sydney to LA flying United. Go figure huh?
